UPDATE: Rivian just announced their referral program. If you are ordering a Rivian use my link or someone else's for $750 in credit toward gear, accessories or free charging! Here is my Rivian Referral Link: bit.ly/479RplK
Is there an actual code you can provide? We ordered ours last week and pick it up on the 7th and I can ask my guide if we can add it after the fact. I was able to do that with a Tesla a few years ago.

Honestly, I sincerely hope that Rivian succeeds as a company. I like a lot of their products, especially the upcoming R2. I'd love to see them improve their software more, but I'm glad that they'll keep Tesla and everyone else on their toes.
R2 will be huge, but there's already a cult following starting for R3 from the car communities. Should be a huge seller, too. My guess is the Van will sell a lot, too. Love that they are enhancing national charging network with 1) their own,.which is customer/adventure focused 2) adapting to Tesla network.
The lady was right. When you plugged into the same EA charger she was plugged into you terminated her session. Even though there are two connectors, two cars cannot be charging from the same EA station @ the same time.
I found that out too right away. It's so odd because it's not that way with the Tesla chargers. I want to be in the room where they agreed that behavior was a good idea. Hmmm. I know! Let's make people want to fight with each other.
Just get the Tesla adapter and use Tesla or Rivian stations whenever possible. You'll have a great experience. I've road tripped 5000+ miles in my R1S.
Agreed. Though my first R1S trip was almost exclusively between EA chargers. I don't know if I was just lucky, but they worked fine almost every time. The one secret was that they were almost always the ones at a Walmart. Maybe those get more attention?
I’d love that trip! The stress of charging would be very stimulating. A private Blow-Out space is priceless. Awaiting to see how the rest of the trip goes! Be safe & have fun.
I haven’t watched the news in a decade. I read the news because I get to control what I read about. I feel fully informed without feeling assaulted by the fear approach of the news “if it bleeds, it leads.” Much happier, far less stressed and worried about things I have no control over. And yes I drove my ‘21 Model Model 3 SR+ across the US (Sacramento CA > Louisville KY and back, 5,500 miles). This is the least expensive, smallest battery, slowest charging vehicle Tesla sells. It was an absolutely fantastic trip! I have made many other long road trips and am totally convinced paying the $10k more for the bigger battery pack would have been wasted. Love your x-country trip videos! 👍🏼
Wife's family is 500 miles to the South and mine is 1000 to the North. One of the main reasons I bought a Model Y and didn't even look at anything was the simplicity and reliability of the Supercharging network.
Thanks for an awesome road trip experience....from my living room. The R1S has been on my list to test drive, but given your charging experience, I'm holding out for the new Y.
Watching you drive through Arizona reminds me of the feeling I get when people tell me “there are too many humans! There’s no land left!“ Usually spoken by folks who live in dense metropolitan areas.
Phoenix to Albuquerque on just one charge is amazing. That’s a long distance. For me in my Model Y making it from Gallup to Albuquerque is cutting it close.
Keep up the great videos and telling the story your way! I’m working in corporate too so I know that grind and the life, but you do you man! Btw super helpful video. My sister in law loves the R1S for the looks but is torn between that and the Model x. The charging network is a big deal for her in the middle of nowhere Ohio.
Love your content. We are holding off to 2027 to get our first EV. We have enjoyed Hybrids but wanted the infrastructure to build out some more as well as the technology is changing...its only getting better. Our plan is to subscribe to the Tesla supercharger network and use that exclusively. I was wandering when you set the filters on the navigation to Tesla and Rivian why it did not work. Did you try restarting your trip to resolve? Yes hotel destination chargers are wonderful...now some are charging for it. Bummer it did not work. Good luck and thank you for all the hard work you do.
Love your channel and videos, I notice you drive in the left lane a lot with no one in front or behind you. That’s a bad habit. Stay to the right and leave that lane for emergency vehicles or passing! ❤
Man those R1Ts are nice!! Gotta stick with my M3SR for now, but my eye is on them....looking forward to the other videos in this series!! If you come to VA, obey the speed limit and maybe I can buy you an adult beverage if you're near the end of your daily travel time!!
I took my Model Y on a 5,900 mile trip from Colorado to Newport, RI at the end of May. No problems at all using the Tesla Supercharging network and some trickle charging when visiting friends. Charging cost = $587. Did a similar trip in 2022 using an Acura RDX with 5,300 miles. Gasoline cost on that trip = $754.
you would be fun to cross the country with. some folks take themselves so serious that they dont risk looking foolish, otherwise known as having fun. i wish you would clean the windshield. nice job Jeebs.
I did a lot of research before buying my Tesla two years ago, and yours and many other videos remind me why that was the right decision. I love doing cross-country trips, but would not feel confident in any other EV. Tesla's charging infrastructure is second to none and has proven itself to me over many long-distance trips.
Good content, considering going to Rivian from Tesla for the truck qualities. Considering this is 5 months later, seems worth ensuring Rivian goes to NACS standard and their navigation software reflects that. That, or just never roadtrip a Rivian.
lets be real - bottom line is its not easy to road trip in any EV for more than 400-500 miles especially when you just want to get from point A to point B. when you need to charge more than two times on any road trip there are too many variables, regardless of vehicle. I did a 2500 mile road trip and it was painful either having to wait, finding dead/broken chargers, or going out of the way or to multiple locations to find a DCFC. let alone all the extra time waiting to charge once you do find a spot.
Depends on your mood/desire for A to B. If you're not in a hurry, it's not that hard at all. A quick charge(assuming you pick/get an easy-ish supercharger...I'm looking at you EA)...getting out, stretching, walk, food, coffee for 30-45 is really nice. Also, getting much easier with use of Tesla network now. Also depends on where you live; the west coast is super easy, and I have done that on another EV that only gets 200-220 highway.
Interesting point to consider. Even though there are two cables on each Electrify America charging station, only one cable can be used at a time. Two vehicles cannot charge on one station.
I feel the same way about the Tesla phantom breaking. All I got was excuses and stopped even using the cruise control because I couldn't trust it. I'm dig'n the Hyundai road trip experience on my I6 though.
If you've got questions about the cell towers and how they get there (specifically the ones you would've seen New Mexico, reach out. It's a fun time and yes it's quite expensive. I can show you what it looks like from the top of many of them.
Those towers you’re referring to is Mount Ord. There isn’t just cellular equipment up there either but also microwave communications systems for various local, state, and federal authorities.
Hey Ben. Got a question for you. My wife is traveling to Clarksburg for some training in her Model Y. She topped up in Quartzite and put the final destination in and the Nav said she would arrive at her destination with -4% charge. It did not have her stopping anywhere else to top up. At least, not at first. Have you encountered this before? Would the MY most likely update and have her stop at like New River or Cordes Junction in order to make it with enough charge? We've never seen the car do this in the almost 3 years we've had it. Long time viewer. Your channel is one of the reasons we went with the Tesla MY.
Thanks for the insight on this little rant!!! I appreciate your channel because it's not all 'techie', you know your stuff but you are not trying to 'knowledge vomit' all over us just to prove how much you know!! I like the fact that you are driving cross country WITHOUT contacting all the charging vendors to make sure their stations are up and running...I can't fathom driving cross country in anything other than a Tesla at this moment in time. I'd be too freaked out wondering if the next station was operational or not. THIS IS THE VIDEO people need to see. I just did AZ to PA to MN to Mount Rushmore back to AZ in my RWD Model 3.....NOT 1 CHARGING ISSUE...it just works. Blessings to you, the wife and the family! #TacoBell4TheWin
Took Rivian on 4500mi road trip. Loved it, but charging is not there. Would only charge at Tesla and Rivian if this was possible…unfortunately it’s not. Would love to see RAN have a cross country route up soon
There is a filter on the map for Tesla with adapter as well. Confusing with having it in multiple spots. Be careful the adapter doesn't get hot and throttle back. Some people wrap a wet rag on the adapter to avoid the hand hold sensor from tripping. It is pretty sensitive. the bus bar sensor internally likely will never trip. Liquid cooling on the ea cables often breaks or leaks. You'll get a derate to 40kw
@@danielam3829 True you can only prefer them but you can also filter so that it only uses A and B rated stations. That might narrow things down as well.
Weaving in a Taco Bell bathroom tile review… boss move G… boss move… 😂😂😂🍻… btw, the charging network was the punctuation to me getting a Tesla despite other manufacturers, IMO, having better build quality and features… fyi… somehow I ended up at an Electrify America charger in Santa Barbara recently - six of the eight chargers were broken..
18:35 if I understood what you said correctly and you used the second cable on the station she was connected to, you actually did unintentionally kick her off. For whatever reason EA installs two cables for each charger; redundancy I guess in case one fails. I nearly did it in my early public charging days too and someone explained it to me. It’s confusing and probably not necessary at all considering when EA stations fail it’s not the cable.
I wish you and others would compare the cost of your trip for electric and gas. Using a mpg average for gas. Help out people to know more on the $s used to travel.
I drove my Model Y from Long Island to Orlando. It was great since I took our dog with me. With the Dog Mode and the fact that she can’t really stay in the car for a “full tank of gas” it did not slow me down. As a result, I was more relaxed and hydrated since we were both peeing frequently. Without her, I probably would have taken my gas car and went 400 miles on a tank of gas in a constant state of dehydration, and arrived in Florida or back home with a headache and sore throat! That being said, we have 2 ICE vehicles, which I’m thinking about converting another to an EV. I have a hard time with anything but another Tesla due to the fact that I travel regionally a lot and we also road trip a few times a year.
Yo gjeebs love the content. Got a Tesla model y 2022. Been following for years. Can you do a rivian tow distance video? Want to see the range or else I’m going for a tree killer… jk
33:40 “What this car lacks in a consistent charging network…” You repeat this sentiment many times, even though you used a Tesla station last and you just said you were making about the same time you would have in your Tesla. That’s nonsensical.
I think it holds in some regard if you consider that the "average person" he talks about is never going to discover the charging network preferences and turn off navigation to EA/EV Go or other historically unreliable spots. I'd love to see Rivian and others start using telemetry from charging sessions to inform the navigation system and help people who are used to the reliability of our gasoline network to make better decisions. Filling up with gas was like this in the early days of the automobile, so I expect this is going to take a while to shake out.
NACS adoption really isn't going to help because its just a plug. NACS is still CCS communication on non tesla owned chargers. Tesla superchargers only work on certain cars and they only allow NACS (non tesla) on V3s and V4s. So much work needs to be done on both the Tesla and Non Tesla side of the house in terms of charging before things will be good. We really need to see other companies dedicated to relability like Tesla and Tesla starting to upgrade V2 chargers to V4 and release chargers that can actually hold 250+ kw for a longer period of time and 800 volt support.
@@Gjeebs Hey gjeebs! Love your content. I saw it, I was just surprised it works at superchargers!!! Do you have to have the Tesla app? It really works at all superchargers?
@@sbmyrickif it really works then why isn't everyone using it? What was the whole "buy a tesla because it's the only way to access the supercharger network" thing about? How long has this adapter existed?
Ahh the Rivian - such a wonderful anti-tesla un-elon car. TriMax R1S on order and about 3 weeks out from delivery. Been driving my buddies dual gen2 and the build quality is so nice.
I may have fast forwarded past the explanation, but is there a reason you didn't just stick with Tesla chargers (and RAN)? With the adapter, I can't imagine even giving this a second thought. But again, maybe I missed something.
Gjeebs, love your videos. You have the perfect balance of goofy humor and useful information. Thank you. However you should know what’s happening with Hydrosilex. As briefly as possible, I used your discount code to try to purchase two 16 oz. products. Got a decent discount, new total was about $27, great. Then to complete the purchase, Hydrosilex added another $28 in shipping! WTF? It’s 2 - 16oz. bottles! Needless to say, I killed the order. I thought you should know. I love Hydrosilex products but $28 to ship it? Really?
Great video. Not selling me on Rivian much as I’d like to be. Curious whether during your road trip you had the tonneaux (how the f do you spell that word?!) cover closed. Looked open the whole way (and empty) which I’m guessing hurts range by at least 10%? And of all the non Tesla and Rivian chargers, which off brand worked best? EVgo? “Love your body Larry!”

I'd love to see Rivian and others start using telemetry from charging sessions to inform the navigation system and help people who are used to the reliability of our gasoline network to make better decisions. Filling up with gas was like this in the early days of the automobile, so I expect this is going to take a while to shake out.
Everything’s funny when ur tired 😂
Rethinking fish and chips currently.
I prefer the look of this truck over cyber truck.
I am a little sad the charging infrastructure isn't better by now. NACS adoption should help.
Thumbs up for Steve-O alone!
He was awesome. He is getting breast implants for his next stunt haha
If Rivian makes a Tesla Model Y-sized vehicle it will be a banger!
The R2 is coming!
@@Gjeebs 2027💀 (Europe)
How are you charging at Tesla Superchargers that aren't Magic Dock? You have a NACS to CCS adapter that works for Superchargers???
Yea I showed the charging adaptor I was using. It's linked below
@@Gjeebs Hey gjeebs! Love your content. I saw it, I was just surprised it works at superchargers!!! Do you have to have the Tesla app? It really works at all superchargers?
It works on most V3 and V4 superchargers, not V2 and some others Tesla has chosen not to open up.
@@sbmyrickif it really works then why isn't everyone using it? What was the whole "buy a tesla because it's the only way to access the supercharger network" thing about? How long has this adapter existed?
That was fun.!
The GM new 400 miles truck is amazing in comparison to Rivian and Tesla.
"Upstar" its a household name 😭😭🤣
hahaha I am happy people watched to the end
(27:00) Go to east Amarillo Tesla SC, new and 250 kWh charging.
Really?
If you just wanted Rivian & Tesla chargers you could’ve selected to only rout you to Rivan & Tesla.
I did that and showed it in the video. Did you watch?
Remembered you said your Rivian is a lease, do they have certain mileage not to exceed over your contract?
12,000 miles a year
So what are your thoughts on the car itself (comfort, ride, etc.) for long road trips? Besides charging haha
I went over it in the video but great comfort and ride quality. I was please on my trip. Body felt good
at this point just hear for the motivational speeches
If and when you have to use EA again the 150s charge closer to 200kw than the 350s🤷♂️. It’s totally on the charger side and not the car.
Yea makes no sense
Great video. Not selling me on Rivian much as I’d like to be. Curious whether during your road trip you had the tonneaux (how the f do you spell that word?!) cover closed. Looked open the whole way (and empty) which I’m guessing hurts range by at least 10%? And of all the non Tesla and Rivian chargers, which off brand worked best? EVgo? “Love your body Larry!”
Day 2 out? Can’t find it.
It will be live tomorrow
@@Gjeebs Your videos are great. Keep it up. Love the humor and it gives me hope for humanity.
Thank you for doing this. Im so on the fence of trading in my Model y for a R1T
Based just on ride and seat comfort, which do you prefer? Your Model Y or the R1T?
R1T has better comfort from the suspension and the seats are about the same
Did you charge up at Flying J in Joplin on 7/23?
Did you add EA back in to routing or did it not take your Rivian/Tesla routing options?
It for some reason still sent me to other chargers
@@Gjeebs that's disappointing. Time to call RJ...
Thank god there is 2x speed
I was here for the laughs and a little education. Mostly for the laughs😂
lol i shit my pants and fish and chips came out
When you said Steve O, I thought it was going to be RJ.
