- What’s even more odd than Polestar’s naming convention, which orders its cars not by class, but when they go on sale?
Why, it’s to give the new Polestar 4 (which sits in price and size between the Polestar 2 and 3 - go figure) no rear window whatsoever.
It’s rather anti-dog, but that feature - together with a silhouette that’s more raised saloon than lowered SUV - does help the Polestar 4 stand out against electric rivals.
But is it enough to challenge the likes of Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche? Top Gear Magazine’s Associate Editor, Tom Ford, has been to find out…

IMO, cameras and screens will never be able to 100% replace a real mirror as you lose the sense of depth offered by actual mirrors
maybe not ... but they are out to replace you too ... the tech giants will keep pushing AI until you don't need to drive, or go shopping, or heck .. even breath ... 'You are no longer needed - GAME OVER'

I do hate them as well though.
I'm okay with digital side-view mirrors because they can essentially remove nighttime glare and blind spots, but yea, not a big fan of digital rear-view mirrors. Moving your head or the mirror around to get a better look at something, is also lost with digital mirrors
If they remove any mirror it should be for a better option, this is not. I am used to driving vans that have nothing, you get used to it but still; why no rear window? its not a cheap car so it can not be the price.
The stupid thing about the no rear windscreen is that if you’re following a car you can often get a sense of what is going on ahead of them through the rear windscreen. I hate following a van etc for that reason. Honestly, this just seems completely unnecessary.
100%. So many times being able to.see through the car ahead makes for safer driving overall.
There is literally no reason to have no window in this car especially when they have a giant pane on the roof.
These days so many rear windows are tinted very dark, you can't see through them anymore.

@@nickthaskater Provided the vehicle has both left and right-side rear-view mirrors, there is no limit when it comes to tinting the back side windows and rear window in Canada.

I have a large rear window on my car but I only use the backup camera and parking sensors… I never use the rear mirror.
I missed the point of not having a rear window.
Chinese market - owners will pay a driver - don't need it and will feel more secure ... I suspect that's the truth of it.
Cost reduction, looks fancy and the designers can play more

I don't understand modern cars. You get a massive skylight but no back wind shield. You get massive screens full of features that nobody wants. The car is also 30%-50% more expensive than most people can pay. And also you can't buy them because they have limited availability in select markets. I really don't get it.
i think things went kakka when they started to design for "dave, who does x job and has y hobbies, etc".
somehow that approach divorced manufacturers from buyers.
(or it could be they are designing for the chinese market, who want different things from a car than europeans)
It’s what consumers obviously want. If they wanted something else, no manufacturer would be going the Tesla route lol

Be serious now. They spend millions of dollars on research. They know the market is shifting towards younger, wealthy and more tech-savvy customers. The roof bracing that would be restricting headroom has been set further back
well, they probably thought of it and figure the window is not gonna be large enough to be any use. D'errr!!!..
It allows the rear roll structure to be moved rearwards instead of above the rear passengers, which means a low roof line (for aero) without compromising rear headroom and a large glass roof. Many cars already compromise this with poor rear visibility

Gorgeous design. IMO Polestar has some of the best interior and exterior design in the industry. Sadly at these price points competiton is tough, and badge matters so much.
Like legendary Franco (Raul Julia) in THE Greatest Car Movie ever made would say: "Whats'a behind me is NOT important" (as he just ripped his rear-view mirror from his Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona spider) 🤣

Cameras for mirrors are only half useful if they are on all the time the car is occupied. What I don't want is a rear view mirror which only turns on when the car is switched on.
Even the Sprinter van offers “back windows”
Yet many tradesman opt to go without. Less chance for eyes to see things to steal.

The JD Power survey shows that in the first 3 months of Polestar ownership, they will be taken back to the dealership 319 times per 100 cars.

If ai’m driving and want to quickly press something, I need to trust it will do that thing without me thinking about it. If I have to properly look at the screen and babysit it, then it becomes a dangerous distraction
It's kinda cool, but it's just too complicated. Also, how much would it cost you with all these sensors and cameras everywhere if you ever have a small accident or need servicing?
This seems to be all new cars at the moment. So much unnecessary tech and I don’t want any of it! Go, stop, decent stereo. With electric power that should be easy and bulletproof
They should have made the 4 as a regular old school Volvo 245 wagon.

The two keys the Polestar 2 comes with are fine, not sure why they felt the need to change the main key (which has buttons on the polestar 2) as it was essentially already the same key as any Volvo out there.

I test drove the new Polestar 2 single and dual motor this weekend and I had the same conclusion that the single motor was actually nicer to drive than the dual. However, I felt that both were pretty "boring" when it came to everyday driving. They just felt slow and sluggish. Sure, if you put your foot down, the dual motor would take off, but when just driving around like normal they both felt tired, with little excitement and fun. I also did not feel much difference between the single and dual motor in everyday city driving. They should definitely have a Sport mode button. I look forward to test drive the Polestar 4, but after seeing this I am not holding my breath.

That's a dishonest review if prior to publishing you knew the first 3/4 of the video was a review of a "broken" car. If they gave you access to a working, standard release of the car; why wouldn't you just do the review of that? Seems complaining just for the sake of complaining.
Well maybe the car company should give a car that works. TG dont want to reshoot everything, that would cost money. Rather than them being dishonest, use your brain.

For a moment there I thought polestar 4 driving experience was bad and IF I didn’t watch the entire video I would have left with that opinion on my mind. Glad I watched it entirely but this can fool other viewers and get the wrong idea.

Not having a single button to switch between custom (user defined) and sport is dumb. They need to add that in a software update. One button, one click. I don’t want to have to navigate through screens. Ideally that button would be on the steering wheel but it’s too late for that.
Also I agree about the key fob. It needs buttons. I mean most of the time I just use keyless entry but sometimes I need the buttons e.g. my partner is trying to get into the car and I’m still locking the front door, I can just click the button and she can get into the car. Seems cheap to remove the buttons. Also a new key fob makes the whole experience of owning the car nicer. I have an Audi and I like the key fob. It’s solid with metal parts and feels appropriate given the quality of the car. That fob that you showed us looked like a brick of plastic.
Apart from those complaints though, that car looks fantastic. Good work polestar.

So it sounds like the P4 handles a bit like the P2 then (both have sprung suspension - not air suspension like the P3) - heavy, little bit of understeer, but well planted and very little body roll (with those heavy batteries on the deck, that's not really much of a surprise). Hopefully the P4 handles bumps and pot-holes better than the P2 ... I look forward to a test drive (August apparently ...) 🚗⚡💨😁

I've got bi-focal glasses, the bottom third of them is focused for short distance (reading instruments) and the top part is focused for distance (looking out), so what happens when I look at the "mirror"? I'll be looking through the top part of my glasses at a TV screen very close, so it will be out of focus. I haven't tried this yet, am I wrong? Sounds like a dealbreaker for me and a clanger by Polestar.
I drove the new Range Rover Vogue with a camera for the rear view mirror and it wasnt a great experience because its so much harder to judge the distance of the car behind
14:17 yeah I was never confident that something like this could be sporty. Its a daily, a commuter car. Will most likely have great road control but you wouldn’t buy this if you wanted a vehicle to he occasionally fun

Good review thanks. I think it’s a nice looking car for what it is. But I feel there are 3 types of ev buyer today the cheap hauler, the luxury hauler, and the fast sports car. Not really sure it does anyone of these better than the others that’s the problem with this car and the reason it won’t out sell other ev cars. But it’s decent in my opinion.

There’s an entire video by polestar saying why they went with this design. Also you should check out the visibility comparison (at night too) with a regular rear view mirror

It allows the rear roll structure to be moved rearwards instead of above the rear passengers, which means a low roof line (for aero) without compromising rear headroom and a large glass roof. Many cars already compromise this with poor rear visibility

I own the Polestar 2 performance pack (or my own version of it with a set of Heico coilovers and OZ wheels and Pilot Sport 4ses). I think so far its the only Polestar I like and want to keep. Other than not needing any bigger the performance/range bump is not worth the extra money. Also am not a fan of SUVs in general.
So far I like the Polestar 4s over other EVs in its class (other than the Macan EV), but I don't see the making the monetary sacrifice to jump from my Polestar 2 to this. On top of liking the Polestar 2 looking more like an evil Volvo, this looks more like an appliance. I think I'd rather look for a second-hand Macan EV in the future though.

Hardware isn't the problem these days. All interaction happens in software, which all manufacturers decide to make themselves and most fail at dramatically.
VW used to be the worst at this, their UX is terrible.
Just how horribly slow the software on this is makes me sure I don't want one.
all these "but you'd need to go to the bathroom anyways after 2-3hours of driving" yeah but me and girlfriend don't take 30 minutes. Usually ten, including washing our hands.

While this looks beautiful, your review shows exactly the problem with these all-in-one-screen vehicles, if you have to start scrolling through screens looking for settings and the screen want's to be fussy you will have an accident because your distracted by the bloody screen, the rear window is just a marketing stunt, at least they left the blinker stalks unlike another manufacturer

Chinese car design isn't completely there yet when compared to European cars.
Maybe in 10 years I'll get one but for now BEV cars are still in the early adopter phase where you overpay for an unfinished product.
