The wooden roller coaster is probably the best looking coaster type in the game and it's also pretty damn good. In this video we take a look at all the ins and outs of the wooden coaster.

These days, I almost exclusively make block-braked coasters.
It takes ages to optimise, but it's so satisfying to see the timing get to the point where a train arrives every time one leaves, and trains never stop on the layout. I've found separate exit stations really help with this. Also it's fun watching all the trains cascade and stop in the middle when the ride breaks down; That's another thing you have to account for - every block has to accommodate an empty train starting there from a standstill.
I just wish block brakes could have a custom speed. Now that we have the new save format, hopefully it comes soon!

    • @sabretooth1997

Sloped to flat chainlift pieces also count as block sections. I often add a single chainlift piece to the top of the second or third drop as a "checkpoint." The goal is to never actually have trains stop at these (have to make sure you put the right minimum waiting time) but they allow you to run more trains closer together.

When i got to Katie's Dreamland in Classic you bet your ass that I took that poster-child for Station Brakes Failure crashes and gave it the Block Brake treatment.
My proudest moment of converting a starting coaster to Block Brakes was Double Trouble from Crumbly Woods, when I rebuilt the thing I split the entry and exit station up and added 2 trains.

Fun fact: Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 had two separate types of wooden rollercoasters.
1: The basic "Wooden Coaster" had either standard 4 seater cars, or 4 seater reversed (Both with max 7 cars), and had access to the vertical loop and water splash
2: The "Wooden Twister Coaster" is the one with articulated trains (Max 10 cars) that came out in the Added Attractions expansion pack, which had access to steep turns and spirals unlike the basic wooden coaster.

Speaking of the reversed trains, there’s another (pair of) roller coaster(s) at Kings Island called the Racer, which is a mirrored pair. I honestly just use decorations to give other tracked rides a similar aesthetic. It never looks quite the same and in some situations the standard slim design of most tracked rides is more appealing, but I like it better when there's some balance between bulky and slim rides, without all the bulky ones being wooden rollercoasters.

They made the loop too circular then. There’s something to do with forward momentum that does better in an upside down water drop shape, when you’d think it would be opposite.
They figured that out with the first looping ‘coasters’ which were weird looking 1 seater carts hauled up to one height with horses, then there’d be an incline on the other side as well.

In my view on the Wooden coaster. The awesome looking supports and structure are both it's best and worst feature.
It occupies a lot of visual space. This is good because it's pretty. It's also bad because it distracts from other pretty stuff and blocks other pretty stuff.
One of my favorite things to do is to have a nice weaving section to rail through super fast boosting average speed, followed by some bunny hops. I especially like ones that use two hills like The Beast in order to boost the length to a nice full 5 minute maximum. With proper design you can make amazing excitement stats, and look good doing it.
For more compact designs the loop is great for driving up the excitement rating when you don't have enough room for the hill count necessary to get great stats otherwise.

I rode Son of Beast at King's Island back when it still had the loop, and it was a terrible experience. Wooden coasters are generally a rough ride, but that one I remember being particularly bad. The loop itself (which was made of steel) was the only smooth part of the ride. They eventually removed the loop, and a few years later tore the whole thing down, and replaced it with a steel hanging coaster called Banshee.
