      I noticed that when I was playing the game recently. It seems that the faster a lift hill is, the less exciting a ride is. Perhaps it's a suspense thing, where the anticipation of reaching the summit and the drop that follows is cut short by a faster lift hill.

    Looks like the top speed is 65,535 mph, or 105,468 km/h. The speed seems to flip between low-ish and 100,000 km/h, which indicates to me that it's overflowing back and forth. If I recall correctly, we can see that internally, speed is tracked as an integer in mph, because the km/h display skips over certain numbers consistently. It's akin to weather apps never displaying certain temperatures in ºF, because they track temperatures as integers in ºC internally before translating it to ºF for display.

    • @MarcelVos
      @MarcelVos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +513

      You're probably right. I assumed everything was in meters/second as the stat requirements for top speed are stated in m/s.

      65,535 is 2^16-1, a.k.a. the 16 bit integer limit. this is why its the maximum mass setting and the highest possible speed in the (in-game) base units of mi/h.

    • @JuniorDjjrMixMods
      @JuniorDjjrMixMods 2 ปีที่แล้ว +142

      Exactly what I was going to say. For those who don't understand, 65,535 is the limit of possible values within 2 bytes.
      However, it is going back and forth, it's overflowing, so it's going ABOVE this value and the bits are written wrong. That is, theoretically the kart is above that, but we cannot see the real value unless the game code is changed to store the speed with 4 or more bytes
      Conclusion: Top speed is HIGHER than 105,468 km/h.

    105180 km/hr = 29216 m/s
    If 60 frames per second, then
    29216 m/s = 487 m/frame
    So if the track is less than 487 meters long, you are actually doing a full lap (or more!) every frame. If the track is exactly the right length, it would look like the car isn't moving at all, kinda like the optical illusion you get when looking at car wheels as they start spinning faster.

      I haven’t looked at the code, but I’d guess the physics engine is still 20 fps, so when the game is slowed down, the rendering system has to interpolate everything between frames. So, at 1/4 speed, the renderer only knows the actual values every 4 frames and has to guess what they’d be in between.
      Essentially, all the renderer knows is that at frame X, the cart is here, and at X+4, it’s now here, and it has to guess: where does it go at frame X+1? Obviously floating off the track!

    Correction on the speed fluctuations for the weight of 1: they aren’t nearly as random as they at first appear. If you’d look at the speed in mph, which I presume is what is used internally, you’ll note the highest one you’ve seen is at the 16-bit unsigned integer limit. You’ll also note that the speed tends to go upwards at a mostly constant rate until it goes above 104,000 km/h, at which point it almost always drops back down to speeds below 2,000. It’s just an integer overflow.
    Sure, there are a few jumps, but those are just blips, and the next time speed is checked it’s always where it would be if the pattern held.

    • @HappyBeezerStudios

    Hazarding a guess, when you lower the weight of a vehicle in motion, it increases in speed because it's carrying the same momentum from when it was heavier. It takes more force to change the speed of a heavier vehicle, which is why the static ingame force of friction has less impact. When a heavy vehicle is moving at a certain speed, it's carrying a large volume of momentum with it. When that vehicle suddenly loses all its weight, that same force continues propelling it and now has much less resistance.

    • @MarcelVos

      @@MarcelVos I guess the new equilibrium speed is just unreachable. As discussed on other comments, the speed in the game is probably capped at 65535 mph (the 16 bit integer limit), so it overflows back to slower numbers and keeps looping. It tries it hardest to reach the new equilibrium speed, but it can't as it lies beyond the 16 bit integer limit. Hey, looks like the RCT universe has its own cosmic speed limit, 65535 mph! And things start to go crazy when you come near it, or try to go beyond it.

    12:05 Interestingly enough, even though the stat window displays the top speed as 12,464 km/h, if you progress the video frame by frame while the car is in motion, you can actually see that the car reaches speeds of up to 104,000 km/h! I guess the game just doesnt have enough time to process the actual top speed lol

    • @saw2135
      @saw2135 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I found a frame at 11:59 that looks like it is 183,900-some km/h. Though that could be the different speeds blending together.
      EDIT: And another of around 503,000 km/h, again, that is probably number blurring together.

    Ok, so curiosity sent me to google and after some quick searches I found some interesting things. Apparently RCT 2 (I'm assuming open RCT2)calculates speed exclusively in mph. I say this because 65535 is the maximum number an unsigned 16 bit value can have without ticking over to 0. As a fun fact 255 (max cars on a ride) is the biggest 8 bit value. Edit typo.

    • @eier5472
      @eier5472 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That would also explain why you sometimes cannot set chain lift speeds in increments of 1, e.g. the options are 6, 8, 9 and 11 km/h or 4, 5, 6 and 7 mph

    If the speed variable in the game code only goes up to a 16bit value, then you'll never be able to go faster than what was achieved here without modding the game itself to track higher speeds with a larger variable range.

    This is just madness and I love it. After a while of thinking about it the game might have an absolute limit in its speed due to game engine limitations, if the game uses 16 bit integers the absolute limit would be 65,536-1 which if the limit hits 65,536 it rolls to the negatives due to an overflow error. So if the ride reaches a top speed at an integer value of 65,535+1 it wouldn't be 65,536, but it would be -65,535 and counts up to 0 and goes back to its 16 bit integer limit it causes an overflow loop. Great video Marcel! This is the content I love, math+science+absolute madness=100%!

    my thinking for the gokarts's weird top speed behaviour when you decrease the weight is the bifurcation diagram, which at first grows slower and slower, but at a certain point speeds up again rapidly, and then becomes chaotic after a certain point

    Regarding cart stopping sometimes once mass is set to 0 I believe the speed is so high that the game believe cart made a full loop compared to the last frame and so loads the same frame instead of checking where the cart is untill speed goes down at which point it can render location correctly. Alternatively the speed is so high that game doesn't do calculations fast enough and switched to the next untill it's easy eanough to process and render.
