  • Foot magic can happen. Foot health is integral to overall good health. Here, Registered Yoga Teacher Sue Lynn Chong takes us through a two-part, do-it-yourself foot-massage routine, designed to wake up your feet and promote health and well-being. Foot massage can also ease stress, increase circulation and promote healing. Sue Lynn uses a simple dowel from the hardware store and a small rubber ball. Please consult a doctor before participating in any kind of massage or exercise routine. Check out Sue Lynn's other work at MindfulMobilityYoga

Thank you for this. I too have a bunion and want to keep my feet in as best shape as possible. I’ve been searching for casual shoes to wear to accommodate bunions. Do you have a preference for shoes to wear ? Suggestion?

      She'll take it from here...
GREAT question! Shoes are a real challenge with bunions. While I don't think any shoe can heal the condition, you can certainly choose shoes that will do no further harm. From experience, my tips would be:
Always try the shoes on and walk several paces to see if there are any seams or pressure points that aggravate the bunion. Even the slightest pressure or irritation to the bunion will aggravate and worsen the condition, and you can't spot this without trying the shoe on.
Look for wider widths with round or "square" toes to minimize compression, and give the bunion safe space.
Avoid high heels to avoid putting too much pressure on the bunion. For dressy occasions, platforms can work well, giving height and glamour without the exaggerated angle that overloads the bunion.
I have had good luck with the following brands:
Naot brand shoes and especially sandals are good quality, and generally have a nice wide foot bed. I always still try on because their desire for style often means designs that irritate my bunion.
Crocs brand shoes and sandals are good for casual shoes because the material is very giving and non irritating, and most designs tends to be a generous width.
Columbia and Salomon have been great for hikers.

Elise, I forgot to mention good shoe stores to try. if you are in the Toronto area, two shoe stores with a good shoe selection that work with my bunion are Walking on a Cloud, and Corso Shoes.
