VN24 - 1961 vintage Henschel HS140 presumably crashed due to brake failure

- VN24 - 02-10-2023 (D/M/Y) - Unna A1 / Germany - A historic tank truck with a Henschel HS140 tractor unit built in 1961, restored down to the smallest detail, crashed on the A1 Freeway near Unna around noon. During emergency braking at the end of a traffic jam, the 70-year-old driver's Semitrailer jackknifed. Presumably due to an operating error, the air hoses of the compressed air brake system were very obviously not connected to the tractor unit in a functional manner. As a result, the tank semi-trailer had no braking effect whatsoever and pushed the tractor unit behind the crash barrier. The vehicle was severely damaged. Fortunately, nobody was injured in this accident. It would have been unthinkable if this truck without brakes had been involved in an accident in front of a school or at a crosswalk. The criminal investigation department and the insurance company must now find out, why the Semitrailer was traveling in this condition.
Note: This is a re-upload of the video with text update. We had obtained the driver's permission on site to show his person, which he would have been allowed to withdraw from us personally. Unfortunately, the driver's niece objected to this and the first video was deleted. This is now the version with the driver made unrecognizable. The fact that we now go into a little more detail about the alleged cause of the accident in the description text has to do with the fact that all verbal agreements made on site, e.g. not to explicitly report on certain facts, are apparently deemed to have been revoked.

In the USA newer Trucks and Semi Trailers have a Second Spring Loaded Diaphragm Brake Chamber at each wheel location. This acts as a Emergency Brake in the case of an Air Pressure failure. The Air Pressure in the second chamber Disengages the Spring Activated Emergency or Parking Brakes. If the air pressure is lost the spring engages the brakes. Also for Parking Brakes the driver dumps the Air Pressure to the brakes, and the Brakes Lock up. As far as I know most older trucks in use in the USA have been updated to the newer system. As a side note, if the truck driver does not properly hook up the air lines to the trailer, the trailer's brakes will remain locked, and he will not be able to move. If the air lines becomes disconnected for any reason the trailer brakes will lock up, and stop the entire truck and trailer in most situations. I'm surprised your Department of Transportation didn't require this safety feature, but perhaps the man had not properly registered, and completed required inspections for use on this older truck.

Rein theoretisch kann der Auflieger doch gar nicht rollen, ohne richtig angeschlossene Druckluftversorgung. Die Federspeicher öffnen nicht ohne Druckluft. Selbst an einer alten Einleiter - Druckluftbremsanlage geht das theoretisch nicht, soweit ich es weiß. Was für eine Druckluftbremsanlage an der SZM und dem Auflieger verbaut ist, wissen wir halt nicht. Vielleicht weiß ja einer der älteren Lkw Fahrer oder Schlosser etwas mehr dazu und kann es erklären. Mein Lkw Schein hab ich erst 1985 gemacht und der Henschel ist einige Jahre älter😉
Zum Glück ist keine Person zu Schaden gekommen bei dem Unfall. Ich hoffe, der schöne historische Sattelzug wird wieder repariert. Alles Gute für den Besitzer.

Das Update besteht darin, dass wir nun in der Beschreibung etwas näher auf die mutmaßliche Ursache eingehen können, warum ein normales Bremsmanöver zu solch fatalen Folgen hat führen können. Das erste Video ist von der Familie des Fahrers gesperrt worden.

It's possible to repair. It's amazing to follow how som people can return almost totally demolished wrecks into nice looking and fully functional vehicles. It just need skills, the right tools and some $$$
There's more here than meets the eye I say it because everyone jumps to Conclusions and they don't wait for a Mechanics report.

Aber glücklicherweise ist dem Fahrer nichts passiert - und sowohl bei dem eingedrückten Tank als auch der beschädigten Kabine erscheint eine Instandsetzung nicht unmöglich! Na denn viel Glück, wäre ja schade um den schönen Oldtimer! Ein Anruf bei Lkw Hoffmann könnte schon die Lösung sein!

@@SchlipperschlopperWäre eine Reparatur SO teuer? Als Laie wäre ich von 30.000 - 80.000 ausgegangen! Ja gut, vieles hängt auch davon ab, was in Eigenarbeit machbar ist, und wie teuer die Teile sind. Das Führerhaus jedenfalls scheint hinüber zu sein - und wie es mit dem Rahmen aussieht, ob der verzogen ist, konnte man nicht sehen. Vielleicht kommt ja irgendwann ein Update vom Besitzer, der im Video verpixelt neben dem verunfallten Truck steht. Noch ist nicht aller Tage Abend, finde ich.
@@jurgenkuhlmann9194400 Euro die Stunde mit 6-8 Mann und das etwa ein Jahr Ich gehe davon aus dass der LKW nebst Hänger Vollkasko hatte...da geht dann was aber der Wert ist eben nicht 3-4 Millionen sondern nur evtl 100-150.000 Euro....für 150.000 Euro kann man den LKW nebst Hänger heute noch nicht einmal gescheit lackieren. Das geht in die 300.000 Euro Region!

Das war damals üblich, Radmuttern an der Fahrzeugseite links haben Linksgewinde und an der Fahrzeugseite rechts haben sie Rechtsgewinde. Es gab auch PKW mit Links umd Rechtsgewinde

Firma Kempf in Bad Marienberg... würde das ein müdes Lächeln kosten,das Fahrzeug wieder auf Top Niveau zu bringen. Die haben auch eine Lkw Oldtimer Flotte...die sehen aus...wie frisch aus der Produktion. Als sie die Fahrzeuge bekommen haben ( quasi nur Schrott Reste ) hätte man nie geglaubt,das diese Teile jemals wieder ans Rollen kämen..1 A top Karosserie Bauer..

Towing an unbraked trailer and not leaving enough stopping distance....no sympathy for the driver. Shame a beautiful old truck and trailer had to be so severely damaged by stupidity. Hopefully, it can be repaired by a new owner.

As an ex trucker not connecting brakes to the trailer is suicide, ive seen too many accidents to care for the old fool that caused this. What would his niece say if he had killed several families. The driver should be prosecuted for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition..... utter madness.

Nein, das erste Video ist gesperrt worden, da die Nichte des Fahrers nicht wollte, dass man sein Gesicht sehen darf. Dabei hatten wir vor Ort extra die Genehmigung dafür von dem Fahrer eingeholt. Die Nichte fungiert aber offenbar als Vormund für den 70-jährigen
