And in the end, this is why Bill is the best comedian working today. Because he paid his fucking dues. He dealt with the kansas cafeterias and that's where he learned to be the best, not in hollywood. Being able to get up after that and do another show 6 hours later.... that's what makes you a champ. After a beat down like that, I would have become a plumber in alaska and never told another joke in my life

+freedoms2010 Boston has an Italian holiday called the Feast of Saint Anthony. The patrons include many older senoras. Bill took to the stage in front of a group of Italian senior women. He tells it like this: They were expecting Dean Martin and they got an Irish kid from the suburbs. The gig was for about forty minutes. He told jokes and no one laughed for the full forty minutes. The women just stared at him. Bill Burr took the bombing like a man. That had to be tough to take.
James Bond Oooh man, how does he do it. How come he doesn't ask any questions about the crowd or group he is suppose to entertain BEFORE he gets on that stage or even accept. Its like inviting vegetarians to a meat fest... what's the point.
That heckle was perfection. It didn't need any insults but it hit him at the core without allowing a chance for a rebuttal.

he was selling posters after his show... when it was my turn to meet him i shook his hand and i go "hey man, the show was hilarious!"... he just stared at me silent and angry... then goes "what are we doing here?.." i go "oh, can i get a picture with you?", he goes "WELL, LETS GO!" and like made a hurry up motion with his hand... it was just really rude and i left the show feeling mad.... i still love his comedy and i dont take it too personal because he probably just hates doing pictures with people... but yeah, not really very humble...

What inspires the hell out of me about this story is the fact that even with how humiliated Bill felt after bombing the way he did - He didn't let that stop him from getting back up on stage just six hours later, to try again -

Exactly. This doesn't just apply to Bill Burr but literally every comedian that has/had a worthwhile career in stand up. This says a lot about comedians as a whole.

i saw him at our college in 2001. it was probably part of the same "tour." he played at the cafeteria, and it went almost the same. At our college, it was a group of Japanese exchange students sitting right in front of him. That set took a hard right turn, from "you wanna bail," to "did he just say that?" in perfect BB fashion, when he stopped dead in his tracks and looked at the table in front of him and said "what are you guys doing here!? of all the colleges all over this country, you picked this one." I grew up in the area and that slayed me. from that point on it was all gold.

I think that story was fairly recent. It was when he had Pete from the Pete & Sebastian podcast telling stories from back in the day. That was a great episode.

+Studeb Yeah, Philadelphia was when Burr decided he had had enough of other comedians being treated badly by the crowd and so he went out there to heckle the arena for his entire set. A total legend! xD
First of all, I want to say I am a big fan of Bill Burr. I always enjoy seeing his stand-up and whenever he's on talk shows. Listening to his story here about the worst he ever bombed, I realized I was at this performance he was talking about. I worked at Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kansas from 1992 to 2004. And yes, this was in the middle of Kansas out in the middle of nowhere. The cafeteria was located in the Student Union, which had a large open space for the tables and a stage. And it had two levels where people could stand and look down and watch someone performing below. One day while I was eating lunch - suddenly there was a stand-up comedian performing. That had never happened before. And there was no advanced word or advertising that this would happen. I remember he had red hair, but I didn't recognize him at the time. I'm amazed now to know that was Bill Burr. There weren't a lot of people eating at the time he went on stage - when I say 'stage' I mean some temporary riser placed in front of a curved wall. This was never meant to be a true place for public performances - there was an auditorium in the Fine Arts Building with a proper stage and lighting. In the beginning there was this sense in the audience of wondering why was this guy performing for us during lunch? We just wanted to sit down and talk to each other while eating, and then get back to work. So yes, Bill did have a less than receptive audience. When he started he was actually doing fine. But there was a moment where he completely lost the audience, and I'm sure he doesn't remember this. He probably never realized what really happened to doom his performance. A young man walked by in the middle of his performance who was walking funny. I'm sure in his mind he needed to find something to get people laughing so he made a quick impromptu joke about the way this guy was moving - I think it was something about him having a hangover from the night before. Which at a college makes sense. What Bill didn't realize were two things; One - this guy was a beloved assistant basketball coach and, two - he was handicapped. He couldn't help but walk that way. When Bill remembers absolute silence, that occurred after he made fun of the assistant coach. Everyone in that room was done with him. I felt bad for the comedian because I knew it was over and he was never going to get the audience back in any way. And I didn't blame Bill back then or even now for what he did. I knew he was just trying to salvage a horrible stand-up performance in a completely wrong time and place to have one. They never had another comedian come again, by the way. Bill - you have proved you are a great comedian, and you paid your dues to achieve the success that you deserve. Now I can say I was there when you bombed the worst!

I like that Bill told a story about a time that HE bombed. Too often, the comedians who do this segment immediately blame someone other than themselves for why they had a bad set. Jerry Seinfeld and Cecily Strong were particularly bad about that.
Well idk if you've ever done stand up but to be fair Jerry's story of when he bombed was in a disco, it's like the worst place possible because they can't and won't lower down the music volume. Also, people don't go to a disco to listen to a comedian, they go there to drink and dance so i'm gonna have to say Jerry's story was pretty much right to blame the set, yeah ik it was his fault for taking the gig but the set was really bad.

One of the things I love the most about Bill is how self aware and humble he can be. He knows when he's wrong or when he sucks but he also knows he's earned his spot, and he's not afraid to talk about either aspect. I don't even agree with a lot of what he says but I respect him so much I enjoy listening even when I think he's wrong. Props to a true master of the craft.

If you have never heard the Bill Burr Philadelphia Incident. Find that shit, Bill technically bombs because the crowd is so shitty they start booing him, but he tears open their ass so hard they start cheering him at the end. Literally some of the funniest shit I've ever heard.
Even when he bombed in Philly, he owned the crowd. And that is hard to pull off.

I know that feeling.. We performed with a punkish band for 9 people, in a cafe. We had a loud intro song, it felt really well playing that and thought "damn this sounds fine today". At the end of the song, the last chord.. there was silence so thick you could lean on it. But its fun to remember and talk about that fail:)

Im a musician and was booked to do similar gig In highschool gymnasium at noon, for a crowd of kids preparing for a prom. After national anthem played and they stood there holding their hearts, we started playing on stage that wasnt facing the audience. No applause, dead silence. Total nightmare :D but its these experiences that make you stronger and more confident in better circumstances so paying your dues is woth it :)
