To me this is a lesson in comedic storytelling. Objectively funny stuff doesn’t happen to funny people as much as you think, they just know what connections to make and what things to exaggerate and focus on to craft a funny compelling story
It could be that, or it could be him remembering a different situation based on his own perspective. Depending on if he was nervous, or maybe in his own head the whole time, it might have had a lot of effect on his own personal recollection.

Like from his perspective even though he got laughs on his bit Kelly didn’t appreciate it and he focused on that in the moment, and his shirt was noticed but he didn’t get to milk it as much as he wanted and that was a disappointment for him, so then he takes those things that stood out and combines them with some other funny things that enhance the narrative and edits it all together to tell an entertaining story. I’m not saying this is all done consciously I’m sure it’s second nature to some degree but yea the difference between the story and reality is interesting if you don’t just look at it like he was exaggerating or misremembering
