The reason Ellie is so happy when she sees the tampon box is because she's a 14 year old girl in a post-apocalyptic world where resources are scarce. The reason she gets so excited about the little rubber cup Maria gives her is because it's a washable and reusable period product, as opposed to disposable ones like pads or tampons. Something like that is MUCH more valuable in this world, especially when you're traveling as much as she is.
I've seen many reactions where men don't know what a menstrual cup is... like, the level of ignorance there still is about women's basic health in plain 2023. ... It's crazy

So, fun fact about episode 4: After Joel lays the broken glass down on the floor as a rudimentary alarm, he tells Ellie that he's partially deaf in his right ear, then the show has him go to sleep with his left ear facing up to hear, but when Henry and Sam sneak up on them, Joel is shown being asleep rolled over with his right ear facing up. Just a neat little detail.

The amount of people in this show that try to kill joel.... then get all shocked Pikachu when they get killed instead... I swear.
Simple: Everyone (thinks) they’re prepared to kill, be it for self-defence, revenge, or supplies - but very few are actually willing or ready to die themselves.
They attack Joel because they think they see an older man and it’ll be easy, not even considering that once they do, they’re sealing their deaths, in a slow/painful way no less.

@@cerka27 It's 1/3 the volume of menstruation of people that are on the heavier side of the average so it's plenty for a single day of menstruation and I guess you could clean it more than once a day.
I think they are not as common as you'd think. I know some reactors even check if they have them in their area xD and they don't. But yeah. I had never seen one, but knew about them (all the women in my life pretty much only use pads that I know of xD).. Was surprised to see it come up in an episode

Me and my boyfriend were at CVS one time to pick up some women products, there was a menstrual cup there and he asked me what it was and how did I use it so I explained and he was like "oh wow that's pretty cool", then a week later we watched this episode he just goes "WAIT IS THE PERIOD CUP!" hahaha he was so proud of himself for knowing that
@@moon-moth1 I am happy that he knows because I literally educated him when he asked me about it, I never said I PRAISED HIM FOR KNOWING, I said he was proud of himself when he saw the menstrual cup in a show we both enjoy watching and knew what it was already. I’m not saying praising men for the bare minimum is not a problem, but that was literally not what was happening here, I am however happy to have a partner who asks me about my menstrual cycle because he WANTS to know what he wasn’t and SHOULD’VE been taught as a heterosexual male in school.

Sarah did the same thing in Episode 1 when they started watching the movie. She said she wasn't tired and then immediately fell asleep, just like Ellie did in the truck. I'd have been dead a long time ago in this world.
Just a small thing, you should most definitely NOT pull out the thing you've been stabbed with, until you can get the proper treatment for the wound. Open wounds make you lose blood way quicker, and keeping the cause of the stabbing in will block most the blood from leaving your body. Friendly tip if you ever get stabbed.
That’s true. But in Joel’s situation it’s different, pulling it out was the better decision and I think people don’t understand that because they heard that keeping in a knife is better.
Yeah that applies in normal situations if your stabbed with a knife and can wait for treatment.
However what people don’t seem to understand is that for Joel, having a splintered wooden bat inside him and having to escape and literally ride on a horse, all that would do is rip his insides apart and kill him way quicker. It would probably kill him that quick that he wouldn’t get Ellie to safety first, pulling it out was smarter because even though he’s bleeding out he bides himself more time, especially for Ellie and has more chance of survival.
Sorry to be a pain, but just in general I see so many people say Joel was wrong or an idiot for what he did because they hear a general fact like that without understanding different circumstances.

The mystery object was a menstrual cup. Pretty much the reason Ellie was so excited to find tampons a few episodes back.
In the scene where Joel is talking heart to heart to Tommy, Pedro Pascal gave the same intense performance EVERY single take they did. even in the takes where they filmed Gabriel Luna (Tommy) and Pedro Pascal was off camera, he still gave the same intense performance so Gabriel could deliver the necessary reaction more easily.

the thing ellie was looking out after her shower was a diva cup... basically a reusable period product. it catches the blood and you can empty it. this way you dont have to worry about running out of pads or tampons! Something most apocolypse shows/movies dont mention... i think its great they actually recognize how it would be an issue

@@spicysnowman8886 replying to this 2 weeks later but just assuming you still wanna know lol; it's basically vacuum-sealed to the vaginal walls, that's how it can't slip out or up and nothing can spill over. there are different sizes though, so that plays a part too.
@@spicysnowman8886there’s not enough room for period products to technically get lost up there there’s a super tiny opening between the vagina and the uterus so nothing larger than that opening can usually get in or out of it, now you might get like a tampon stuck up there in the vaginal canal but not usually because it has a handy string that you can pull to remove it and a tampon or any other period product will never make it’s way into the actual uterus.

The eye-opener for shows/games like this show is that it draws your attention to some real things that would happen in a situation where basic services break down; what preppers call "shit hits the fan."
In those types of situations anyone who has not made preparations are going to experience the real life consequences; mainly, dealing with other people who want to take your shit. Barricading yourself in your house isn't going to help because eventually you will have to come out to find food/water/medicine or, in the worst case scenario, someone forces their way in to take whatever you have.
All zombies aside, people are the real threat, and that is what you have to prepare for.
Yeah I'm not wasting my life prepping for something that will likely not ever happen. If some situation does happen that turns my area into a horrible survival of the fittest shit show I will probably find the highest building as fast as possible (if I even make it there alive) and jump off. I have 0 interest in kill or be killed mentality and also 0 interest in surviving as long as possible for the sake of it. Quality over quantity. If I have to spend my life always watching over my back thats not living. I dont want to have to worry about people trying to murder me for my shit every day. Thanks. So no prepping for me. I'll live my life in the present day and enjoy it as much as possible. And if the horrible ever occurs then see you on the other side. We all go there eventualy with or without events like that. The after prep life is not one I would enjoy. And to me there is no point to life if there is no enjoying it anymore.

Because it shows us that in a world like this with zombies being around, the main issue and reason death will befall you would actually be due to other non-infected humans.
The Henry & Sam episode really made me cry, even after playing the game a lot. Their story is the only one to make me cry everytime

Another fun fact about this episode: The giant tank of an infected is called a Bloater and they’re basically the boss enemies of the game. They take a ton of bullets and usually a Molotov or two to bring down. The way you see the bloater rip the guy’s head off is a 1:1 copy of how they kill you in the game too!
The guy who plays Perry (Kathleen's right hand man) is Jeffrey Pierce, he is the original voice actor and motion caption for Tommy in the video game. I thought it was so cool they got him and the original Marlene to be in the show. You'll be seeing more OGs.
Also the big guy you saw was a bloater. The most severe of the stages and strongest in this game

@@IH8YH Joel even indirectly mentioned it in the show. In episode 2, when Ellie asked how long infected lived, Joel said that some have been walking around for about 20 years. Bloaters are only after around 3-4 years of infection I believe.

Fun fact: you can be in really good shape and still get winded climbing stairs. If you're not working those specific muscles on a regular basis you'll still have trouble. I have a friend who could run marathons but ask her to walk up a few flights of stairs and she'd by dying by the end of it lol

The old man… It’s suicide by cop. He was just over the world. He was just over living. He wasn’t stupid. He knew exactly what he was doing, and he wanted to die.
I'd go so far as to say he was missing on purpose as well. With the number of able bodied people at their disposal why would they put him in a sniper position if he hadn't proven himself capable? I think he just didn't want to be the one to kill them and was trying to keep them pinned until the others arrived. When he turned towards Joel his barrel remained pointed down.
@Dilligff that was a really quiet far edge of the city and the had everywhere blocked up except the tunnels which they thought were full of infected..m hence why they just stationed 1 old dude there. just watch point and call for back up...easy Job. had all he able capable ppl searching the inner city and protecting stashes like Kathleen said. his reactions were slow, eye sight iffy and it was extremely dark.... he would struggle to land shots at that distance. when Joel took shots they were much closer remember and Joel is a good shot.

I saw it mentioned somewhere else that Anthony (the old man) knows Kathleen has a tendency to kill people who fail her, so he knew he was dead either way and he might as well attempt to take the shot.
Ah yes another episode of the crying simulator, lol. Sam and Henry's story is so sad, and the way they hold the shot on Ellie's shocked reaction after Henry ----s himself mimics the shock the audience feels perfectly. Side note, the little boy who plays Sam is deaf in real life and this was his first acting gig and he was SO good, omg (that kid is going places).
The show does an amazing job of balancing showing how strong and badass Ellie is while still having to remind everyone that she is still just a kid and that duality is heartbreaking at times. Every time Ellie is able to do something badass on her own, Joel feels both proud of her ability but also regret it was necessary which I feel would be a common theme in an environment like this.
We also got a lot of Joel's backstory from the beginning with Sarah and all that, but the show has intentionally been vague about Ellie's backstory and slowly revealed more as the story goes on, and it's good to see that moment where she shoves Joel and Joel realizes that, as bad as he's had it losing Sarah, that doesn't mean others don't have their own tragic stories as well.
Great stuff, the next 3 are gonna really be something

Kathleen's hate towards Henry was comparable to Captain Ahab's hate of Moby Dick. She let her hate consume her so much it resulted in her death and all those around her including those in the city too.
Yeah, and I love the way the show portrays it with her killing their doctor and then ignoring the thing under the ground in favor of killing Henry.

If the world got this dark and awful, I'd probably head up to the Rocky Mountains on a cold winter day, with a bottle (or two) of really good whiskey, sit down under a tree with a good view, and drink until I passed out with the snow falling around me.

Hey Alex! absolutely love your content. fun fact, this show was filmed entirely in Alberta, Canada which is where i live and many of the scenes are towns and cities all throughout Alberta. the town where Tommy and his wife live was actually filmed in Cannmore, Alberta and the schools Ellie and Joel are riding through in the end are both in Calgary, Alberta. the first one was SAIT which is where i went to college and the second one was mount royal university. they actually filmed some of these scenes when we were in class and we could look out the window and see all the cameras and production equipment, incredible experience!! such a great show

At the start of episode 3, Bill and Frank, Joel tells Ellie that Fedra evacuated people for Quarantine Zones--unless they were full then the people were killed. Ellie asked why kill them and Joel replies ... "The dead can't get infected."
I have to hand it to the show runners. They do a good job of addressing many of the questions commonly overlooked--including menstrual hygiene (over a decade of THE WALKING DEAD and not once has the subject ever been breached by Carol, Andrea, Lori, Maggie, Beth, Michonne, et al, even after the first major time jump and woman takes over the job as show runner, and does a fantastic job at finally breathing new life into characters and adding hope and humanity to the show, even she did include even a passing reference to tampons or menstrual cups--much less other post apocalyptic shows).
"Punch in the clicker" is probably the best description I've heard yet for this show lol. So great, though.
the rubber thing Elie was interested in is called a diva cup ! its a reusable washable menstrual cup that expands inside and catches the blood. which would be very useful in an apocalypse considering other menstrual hygiene products are sparse to come by in their situation ofc so she's def exited to not have to use towels/rags/extra underwear that she would've been using instead of pads and tampons because its reusable and all :)
menstrual cups don't expand but yeah they usually hold a couple pads worth of blood

I would build an earth house (hobbit house) somewhere temperate where I could garden and hunt year round. Multiple exit tunnels so I can't get trapped; they're warm in winter without needing a large fire and they're nearly undetectable from far away.

Episode 5 and without spoiling it 8 are the best so far, that 5th episode has it all drama, emotion, action, plenty of Infected of course when you play the games you know without spoilers shits gonna get wild in that final episode I'm sure.
I will say my one and only complaint about the show was I wish we would've gotten more infected in the show
One of the reasons the latest TWD seasons had so much hate is because they used excessive zombie scenes because they had no decent, thought out plot. But TLOU definitely does not have that problem, because it has such an amazing, heavy, and large plot it does not need excessive "zombie" scenes to fill it if it does not need it (plus the last 3 episodes make perfect sense as to why there are no infected as its established in the very first scene that cordyceps needs a homeostasis environmental temperature to survive).

Definitely setting up my base in a lighthouse, I’m surrounded by the ocean so it’s easy to see what’s in front of me. And I can also filter the ocean water into drinkable water, even having a food source with fish. I can even set up a sniper station on the top of the lighthouse.

Apocalypse happens, setting up shop at one of those strips in the Midwest that has a Walmart, Menards/Lowe’s and Sam’s Club or Costco all in a row. Got everything you need there.
Both underground and treehouse would be fine against infected but since the biggest problem in these universes are the people treehouse would be the first to fail, so your best bet is to go underground, camouflage the entrance and be wary of people whenever going in or out, it's not foolproof but it's been done a lot throughout history. Or could go to an empty island but there's also problems with that.

The question if it's you inside is something I always wondered. I recently saw a documentary on cordicepts and recent discovery is that the fungus most likely doesn't control the briain, but the muscles. So I'm wondering if it controls you body, do you still consciously get to experience everything. Something like that happened in the movie "splinter", where a spikey fungus would grow in the skins and muscles and then bend your body in directions it's not supposed too, all while you where still in full control of your senses.

It's one of the few themes that will always get me emotional. Ori and the blind forest and The Last of Us main theme will always get at least one tear out of an eye.
The game is an absolute Icon. You REALLY need to play it sometime soon (It comes out on PC on march 28th!!)

I can still remember hearing the theme song when I first played the game on my PS3. Then I played the remaster on my PS4 Pro and again the total remake on my PS5! I cant wait until the 28th to be able to play again on my PC!! Best. Game. EVER!!!! :)

And RE monkeys/chimps. There is a difference. Chimps are a species and are a type of ape, like humans and gorillas (plus others). They are part of the order primates (these are taxonomic terms). Monkeys is a general term, there are many species of monkey and they are also primates. One characteristic on identifying monkey or ape is that apes don't have tails but monkeys do. Taxonomy can be a bit of a headfuck tbh 😅
