The fact that Joel and Sarah were close to ingesting foods with flour multiple times in the first episode. Biscuits, cake and pancakes and cookies... dodged them all.
I love that little nod. I was fresh to the story, but watching it a second time, I see these flags and easter eggs. Love it.

Tess didn't let it happen. They clearly stated in the episode that the fungus share a connection. At the end the camera focuses on the fact that she is losing control by showing her hands shaking. Tess was still "trapped inside" like they mentioned in the 1968 clip. Her lighting the lighter was the last bit of fight that she had.
Also she was trying to make as little noise/direct confrontation as possible. The one thing that mattered for her at that point was the lighter.
I think her hands were shaking due to fear, it's way too quick/early for the fungus to be taking control of her already. Fear of what is happening, what is about to happen, and fear of the end. She's letting it happen because to resist makes the fungus zombies violent, and she can't fight back while trying to light the lighter. She was only able to light the lighter because the fungus didn't view her as a threat and could calmly infect her. Powerful shit man and fucking terrifying.

She was bitten at the base of her neck, and had since bandaged up, had a convo with Joel, walked from the museum to the Firelight's base, had another convo with Joel and Ella, took time to dump all the explosives, and then wait and watch as the zombies brokeo in and sloooooowly came up to infect her again?
That feels like more than 15 minutes...

I don't think they ever tell us exactly how long it takes to "transform" other than Ellie or Tess saying "no one survives more than a few hours" or something along the lines. My thoughts are if she were so far along, would the fungus not recognize/sense that she was already well on her way to being one of them? Why waste time infecting her more? All in all, it's a show and they decided to do this so we'll never really know lol. In the video game, Tess never smooched no zombie before her end haha. So we can chalk it up to creative artistic choices!

33:20 yes!!, you're the first reaction I've seen to pull this up. I think it's very clever the writers decided for Joel to specifically say that cordyceps mutated to sugar and flour, being that on the first episode Sarah decided to not go for the pancakes and Joel had his coffee sugarless, so cool
Joel also forgets to get a cake, and Sarah never ate any of the cookies she made with the neighbors. Literally dodging it at every turn without even realizing.
Another reaction I watched said “oh yeah those shit raisin cookies sarah didn’t want” their words exactly.

Zombie movies/shows usually seem pretty fictional so I've never felt real fear about it. This show is the only one that comes close to real fear for me because of the science of fungi. That intro gives me chills.

Tess didn't "let" the Infected guy do anything.
The reason Tess' hand shook so badly, and she struggled so much with the lighter, is that the fungus was spreading inside of her.
The cordyceps was already mostly in control of Tess, and it had no reason to want to avoid an additional cluster of fungus inside of her -- quite the contrary.
Geting that lighter lit was the last thing Tess had any control over; it was, *literally* , her last act in control of her own body.
Episode 3 is sad, but also beautiful.
Bill and Frank won the apocalypse -- they spent their lives together, and died on their own terms.
Alex, since you asked "Which type of Zombies are scarier?" I can honestly say that the Cordyceps Zombies are scarier because when you are infected there is quite a bit of evidence to suggest that your mind is still active inside of you but the rest of your body is under the control of the Fungus. In the game you come across infected weeping alone in dark buildings incapable of ending their own lives because the fungus won't let them.
At least with traditional undead zombies they kill you and your lifeless corpse stans up to kill people without the mind inside.

When they first made the game, scientists guessed that the fungus somehow infested the brain or controlled it chemically (as the Episode 1 cold open suggests).
More recent studies have shown that, at least in ants, the fungus is actually present everywhere *except* the brain! The fungus grows in between and controls the muscles directly 😨So presumably the victim’s mind is completely untouched.
That's why we don't call them zombies they're not the living dead . it's an important distinction never in the game they called dead or zombies and the first episode interview he says it doesn't let you die.
What about resident evil (movies) zombies? In one of those they gave a zombie drugs and it started remembering stuff and somewhat acting human.
Great answer! I agree with the cordyceps being scarier because killing 1 could have a bunch end up heading your way, other zombies you kill one quietly and thats it.

One of the rare instances of a TV adaptation of a game done right. I'm a huge fan of the game franchise, so I'm glad they did it justice.
As someone who never played the game its been really good so far.

It was the flour. On outbreak day, which was also Joel’s birthday, and the day of Sarah’s death(one hell of a birthday). They managed to avoid pancakes, biscuits, cookies, AND birthday cake.
The cut to the school boys hand in the first episode is to show that he was infected, his hand twitching like that is one of the first symptoms, it's just to reinforce the idea that It began in more built up populated areas 👍
Indeed it is. But it probably began at the same time, in lots of different places. We know it spread through some hugely popular grain product, and/or products that had grain in them (from the factory in Indonesia). It would all depend on who got those products in their shelves first. Which probably was multiple places across the world, at more or less the same time.

The car scene the scene with him and his daughter and the watch and when his daughter got shot r pretty much 1 to 1 with the game. Marleen is actually played by the original motion capture and voice actress for the game.
They are not zombies actually, but infected. The guy at the beginning said that the fungi doesn't let the people die, they keep them alive, they just use the bodies like puppets or marionettes, controlling the mind. I've read that on the set the word "zombie" was banned, because they are not the same :D

Same with walking dead they never used the word zombie.
In the walking dead it was a virus that affected the brain and there was no cure for it. Once you were bitten, that was it. You died after a horrible bout of a fever and disease type symptoms and you reawakened as a zombie just wanting to eat people and animals. The only way was for someone to shoot you or stab you in the brain because that’s where the virus was.
@@ADayinMyLifebut the difference is those are actually zombies. these arent, theyre people turned monster from fungus controlling their mind. obviously they still operate in a similar fashion but a key difference is you can kill these infected without having to destroy the brain. few shots to the chest will still get it done
I don't know if it's been confirmed by the directors but the theory I read is that Bill went out in the middle of the street with no cover during the raid because he didn't want any bullets to fly near the house and the windows in case it hit Frank, it still doesn't explain why he wouldn't take cover on the house across the street but it's something.
If you think about it though he had everything under control until he got worried about Frank being outside. He had faith in his aim and his traps, and honestly he was right. If Frank had either stayed asleep or in the house he wouldn’t have gotten shot

The actor who plays Joel is Pedro Pascal. He was in Game of Thrones and also in the Mandalorian as the Mandalorian, Din Djarin. The girl was in the Game of Thrones as the little bear, I think that’s what they called her. She’s the first one who bowed before John Snow as the King Of The North. And was braver than many men on that show. That was a few years ago when she was about 10. I love her fighting spirit in both shows.
You should definitely react to The Mandalorian. Pedro Pascal (Joel) is also the lead in that. If you thought his nonverbal acting was amazing. He wears a mask the whole time and still gets the emotion across. You’d love it! No prior Star Wars knowledge needed either really.
Continuing through and had another thought. I don’t think you need to react to this, although it would be fun to watch. You should watch Parks and Rec. Nick Offerman (Bill) gives a legendary performance as Ron Swanson. Great end of night show to watch an episode or 2 to wind down. Great reaction so far!
Just to clarify, the fungus doesn’t kill and reanimate humans. It doesn’t kill them at all. It mind controls people, feeding off them. The people are still alive inside with no control. Which is way worse

In a situation like this, where Bill loots a bunch of the stores, he is fairly ahead of the game on a knowledge level. Most people think in terms of finding food, water, shelter, etc.... but I say libraries would be just as important to hit up if you can find one.
Knowledge on how to prepare and store food without refrigeration, how to purify water, and a ton of other life skills the average person may not have. I don't know about anyone else, but instructional materials like this would be high on my list of necessities for long term survival.
You could just do cub scouts.... I can do 99% of that off the top of my head from 20 years ago. Fire, bow, water, shelter, etc.
That and home ec. Helps if you can make your own clothing repairs.
Yep, that is brilliant. I actually just checked out a couple of books from my library called "Back to Basics: A Complete Guide on Traditional Skills" and another called "The Essential Guide to Self-sufficient Living" ... Unrelated to the apocalypse but yeah they would be good ones to have lol 😂 They cover gardening, raising livestock, canning and fermenting, grafting trees, building furniture, butchering animals, and even how to select land and build a log cabin 😂 I don't think they tell you how to turn on and maintain a power grid or sewage system... But otherwise it's basically everything Bill would need to know, just from a couple of books
Yeah... Sara. 😭 I played the game so I knew what was going to happen to her. I spent most of that first episode thinking how devastating her death would be for new viewers with how much of the episode developed her character and the audience's empathy for her. But, it does help you understand Joel's absolute devastation over loosing her though the rest of the story.
This was the first game that ever had me in tears.

One of the things that makes the death even sadder in the game is that the soldier tries to reason with his boss on the comms because he doesn't want to kill the girl. But it obviously doesn't work, and he has to shoot her anyways.

They somehow managed to recreate the truck driving POV shot from the back of the seat in EP1 so wonderfully it's crazy!
Also loving the new editing style of the videos, with the episode/movie covering the whole screen and your reaction to it popping in between.
This show is leads creepier than walking dead. It's so much more grounded and feels so much more realistic, especially after the last 3 years. Not to mention, the sound design is absolutely incredible. During the clicker scene (what they call the blind "zombies") I couldn't help but hold my breath because I felt fully immerged into the show. Also the game is definitely worth playing, but you should do it after you finish the first season
@moth_goth Nothing exactly comes to mind honestly. The beginning seasons were really good but gore and jumpscares don't really affect me like sounds do. Like the scenes in Last of Us with the clickers I've watched multiple times and every time I found myself holding my breath. But thats just my personal preference honestly.
Every reaction I have watched someone always says Joel should close the door when he's running with sara, but he literally kicked it in, closing it would do nothing because there is no way to secure it now

Just commit to season 1 of Walking Dead. It was beautifully shot and, at the time, was some of the first movie-worthy story telling I had seen made for TV. The framing of shots was reminiscent of the graphic novels yet the acting was so realistic and the details of the sets kept it real. The fungus sick are way faster than zombies and the hive mind makes them more menacing.
It’s such a good show! Great writing, acting, production, everything.
I think that world war z has the worst zombies. Speed kills and they still have their other senses.

Yeah, first episode is amazing, and the first season as a whole is great. Then they fired like all the writers and the show runner, and the show got rough for the next few season. And if it ever got good again, I wouldn’t know, cuz I fell off in like season 4 or 5 😂

Cordyceps, the Fungi that inspired this game is a real thing that is mostly known for infecting ants and other bugs, it does exactly what the scientist at the start of episode 1 says
Fun easter egg, in episode 1 Joel and his daughter don't have pancakes, don't eat the biscuits, forget to grab the cake, don't eat the cookies. Infection spread to grains and people likely got infected from eating those grains.

I'm so glad that the show has done the games justice because it's not only one of the best games ever made but also one of the best stories of all time I love to see the show also has more people playing the game.

@@angelo423 He is right though. Some episodes of TWD are pretty good, but in general the show is a big mess. Just read the comic, it is way better.
Edit: I am not someone who was a fan of the comic and then unhappy with the adaptation btw. I only read the comic at some point because I was unhappy with the show declining so much and wanted to check out the source material... and after reading the comic was like "How can you fuck that up so much?"
I don't think a lot of people realize how big of a statement to bomb the city was either... The greater Jakarta area consists of roughly 45 million people.
IMO the walking dead is great... up to a point. I think like the first 4 to 5 seasons are REALLY good.. but after a point.. it was just too much of a good thing and started to get a bit bland.. just my opinion
TWD kinda comes and goes in quality, the first season is goated, season 2 has grown on me over the years, and from there on it goes from great to bad to mid to great and so on

Love your reactions. Sub’d. However you cut out a very important part of episode 3. The letter to Joel is so deep and meaningful. That needs to be read completely. The letter is the entire reason for this episode. A reason to live in this horrible world and “God help any MFR that gets in our way!”
I love the zombie genre. It is the only movie/show that regularly gives me nightmares. But it's not the zombies that are interesting to me. It's what happens to normal people in extreme circumstances. The timid person may end up being a complete badass (like Carol in TWD), or the stand-up guy may end up being a crazy, unhinged monster (like Shane in TWD).
Recently, there has been some video game adaptations that have been soooooo good. I would recommend watching Arcane. It is animated but it is beautiful and an intriguing story. It isn't meant for kids though. It is adapted from material in League of Legends. So far, it is my favorite video game adaptation ever. It beats TLoU for right now.
Arcane doesnt bring out the human emotions like The Last of Us does for me so I beg to differ. But Arcane is GREAT. Each their own!
You should definitely play the game. The show is a very faithful adaptation, but there are some difference in terms of some little changes to events, slight characterizations and, obviously, the game has a lot more action to keep things engaging as a video game. Both are incredible in their own ways, and even if you experience one, there are still surprises waiting you in the other

I don't consider these to be zombies but there are some similarities. That being said, the infected in this show are sooo much scarier than the zombies in the walking dead. Like a lot scarier!!

Great reaction. Episode 3 is a masterpiece! I was in the hospital for 2 months with only a wash cloth bath. Once home and strong enough....that shower....there are no words to describe it. Even now, a few years later I tear up in the shower at the joy and relief of warm water on my back. Love your reviews!

I played the game when it came out, and loved it. Such a great duo and she is a badass. Got to say I was kind of laughing at Alex getting invested in the daddy daughter duo at the start knowing what was coming. Sad of course in reality, but just seeing him get invested in one of the shortest character bonding in TV was a little funny.

Haha at least two or three times on every reaction I’ve seen of his, he either gets lost, or confused, or comes to some conclusion that is hysterically dumb.
That opening scene really scared me. Talking about how global warmth could alter the food chain of the “zombie fungus” which exists in real life, meaning they could infect humans and we becoming zombies.. that really scares me

so you've seen the template for the whole season, the entire show. people live out their lives in the apocalypse with beauty, grace & tragedy that makes people literally weep, occasionally punctuated by sheer horror at the monsters. it's an emotional whiplash that happens over & over again with each episode. that's the show.
thought I found myself a new movie reaction channel to get into, changed my mind over the oatmeal raisin slander. jokes aside it's mad interesting seeing all these different perspectives of the show from people who loved the games compared to people who never played them. wherever you think this ends up going I can't wait to see what you think about the rest of it

The Walking Dead is a great show but it get‘s really good around Season 3 and 4 imo, many will probably disagree with my opinion but that‘s totally okay for me.
8:50 Ironically them not saving that family saved them. Had they picked them up they'd be in the back of the truck. That flying plane piece would have hit them or they would have got seriously injured when the crash came. Those folks out in the middle of the highway had a higher survival chance than most others.
