"I am Legend" was a book adaptation. The original concept of the book was, that we follow a survivor of a Zombie Apocalypse. He is skilled at surviving and killed many of the "Zombies". Throughout the story we learn more and more, that these "Zombies" have built themselves a society and they are capable of emotions and thought and the guy we were following the whole time is their version of the Boogeyman, since he was always hunting them down and really good at killing them. Turning the trope on the head. We (the Protagonist) are their monster in the cupboard / under the bed. The movie failed to bring that point across. The movie would have been better, if they successfully portrayed that concept.
It's actually a vampire book
Yes they are vampires not zombies, but the rest of the explanation is accurate.
To be precise, the vampires were not that clever at first. Some of those who turned first still are not killed and it's clear they are stupid compared to those who turned later.
The reason the "zombies" look weird is cause they're not zombies, theyre vampires. We did see the attributes of them being smart throughout the movie like the way they set up the wire trap used on Will the same way he used one to capture the female vampire. Also the alternate ending is the canon one that the sequel will continue off of
Fan of the book here.
They might as well make Titanic 2.

@@cormaccorrigan9086 Yes, this film will have a sequel with Will Smith, and yes, the books go way beyond what was shown, this film is like just half of the first book
The alternate (original) ending makes sense if you watch all the other scenes before they were cut to make the movie fit the typical genre ending. He realizes that the reason they came after him was to rescue the woman he trapped. He realizes that he misjudged them and their capacity for thought and emotion and that from their perspective he is the monster, stealing them away and killing them, which he was.
I much prefer the alternate ending. It was so much more impactful.
I was going to say this. Lol
He cured her how the heck is he the monster none of them asked to be infected with that stuff
@@joimonae4090 Non of them asked to be infected, that's true. However, the good doctor was taking them to experiment on to try and find a cure and when it didn't cure it killed them. The infected aren't mindless so they see the doctor as not trying to help them, but stealing them away and killing them. That makes him the monster to the infected.
@@joimonae4090 because the infected had developed their own social structure. So Robert became the "Day Walker" that kidnapped their companions experimenting on, and killing them.
A part that I haven't many people touch on, is that the scene where Fred gets shot and Will is freaking out is because Fred isn't where he's supposed to be. He was outside a store earlier in the movie and now he's in a different part of town by the Darkseeker's nest. The Alpha put Fred there to lure Will in so he could trap him with the same trap Will used to catch his mate. This shows that they are able to have higher levels of thought processes and are learning from him. They are also not afraid of light, they are hurt by sunlight which is why when he's in the nest and shines the flashlight on them it doesn't effect them.
The "Zombies" are not supposed to be zombies, they're basically just a new species of people, and in the book, it's very different, the whole book is about how the main character realizes at the end, that these creatures are actually just the new humans, and that him killing them actually makes him the monster, and him basically realizing that he is now a Legend, and will be seen as sort of the Boogeyman.
So would this movie be an allegory for the the new human behaviors adapted because of progressive ideas/ideals?
@@rikerdavis2843 Maybe? I don't know, it could also just be a story and not an allegory for anything in specific
@@rikerdavis2843 LMAO no.

The book is SO GOOD! I havne't read it in 15+ years, but there's a point where a chapter ends with "and the watch stopped", or something very close to that. I was reading it at 2am and I SLAMMED that book down and was like "okay yeah I'm not sleeping tonight". Definitely one of my favorite horror stories ever.
When something is so cute you want to strangle it actually has a term. I looked this up recently adopting an abandoned kitten. It's called cute aggression. And the theory is that they activate a primordial part of your lizard brain because you love them on site and it causes an aggressive response to want to protect them, then more advanced parts of your brain struggle to process the emotion. It's perfectly natural, although it's one hell of a juxtaposition.
The part that always gets me about Sam dying is that she’s the last piece Neville has of his family. Sure, she kept him company and was his best friend but in addition to that, she was his last connection to humanity, to the life he had before.
Now imagine if the additional cut scenes of Sam made it back into the movie ;) One in particular when Sam chases a butterfly around the corn field when Will Smith is collecting food
“I wanna see the movie where the dog has a few close calls but survives.”
Prey (2022)

I was about to say 😂
In the book, Robert Neville went around slaughtering the vampires during the day while they slept. The vampires could talk and wind up starting a society and they would tell stories about a “boogieman” that kills them while they sleep. He had become the legend that they feared like vampires were to people. The book is infinitely better, but it’s still not a bad movie. BTW, the dog was even more tragic in the book
Freaking loved the book!
That dog was my first time crying hot tears while reading a book
@@LeMikeHocksbig What happens to the dog in the book? 😟
They tried to make this fantastic book into a movie three times because the book is that good. None of the film versions live up to it.
@@EdithCardellini you should read the book to get the full effect, but if you really want to know....SPOILER! He doesn't have the dog in the book and is all alone for a very long time. One day he sees a dog wandering around looking for food and he tries to lure him over because he's so desperately lonely. He spends weeks trying to befriend the dog and get him to come inside so he can have someone. Finally, he befriends the dog and gets him to come in, but he's already sick and dies a few days later. Its crushing to read. It was so well written that you feel his loneliness and want him to have a friend only to lose him so quick
I'm guessing you've seen all the comments about Will being the bad guy to a new species, but I wanna make sure you understood the close-up of the guy's face when the woman is kidnapped. The infected guy is the "alpha" of the group, and she is his mate. When she was kidnapped, he exposed himself to dangerous sunlight to see her kidnapper's face and track him down. The trap with the dogs and them charging at his desk/home was all because he kidnapped one of their people and they wanted revenge. (Spoilers so please watch the cannon first ending) The first ending they made was closer to the book, but everyone who watched it didn't like it ending on such a happy note. Instead of blowing them up, he realizes that the dude is smashing the glass to get to his mate. He pulls the table out and wakes her up from her induced coma (she is still infected). The alpha picks her up and they all leave, and the Dr is left alive feeling even more guilt for not only infecting them but killing them afterward.

Doesn't matter what you think about Will Smith, to act pretty much alone without anyone to play off is a talent. Also from the book they're vampires. That's why they're not mindless and hate the sun.

Will Smith may be a Slapper👏🙌!! ... But nobody could have played this part better.... And I like the ending🔚 they went with; made his character even more tragic😭 illustrating how much sacrifice is necessary to overcome a catastrophic event like that...In the movie Robert Neville's military/research doctor🧪 skills make him 1in 10 million... But he still has to die to achieve his objective, there's no saving him... He's just saving all of us. That's why we continue to pay for our military, because that's what it usually comes down to sooner or later....

What freaked me out the most the first time I watched this was the sound design... no music... just ambient noise... it made it so much creepier!
In the book, you realise the "zombies" are intelligent and starting to form their own society. He's the monster they tell their kids to stay away from, because he kidnaps them and experiments on them.
That's the legend.
Did not know that. I may have to read the book
@@RandomFandomDragonagree that sounds dope actually lol
Alex screaming "FAAARRK" at every jump scare is always hilarious.
In case yall weren’t aware, and especially for Alex, the liquid he kept pouring on stuff was bleach. He was using it as a way to hide his scent so the Darkseekers wouldn’t be able to track him back home
Also in the movie the Darkseekers are a combination of zombies and vampires (in the book they’re just vampires) but they are capable of rational thought and aren’t just mindless beasts. That’s why I personally like the alt ending. It shows that while they hate and fear Neville for capturing and killing their kind, they understand what he was trying to do
I didn't get vampire at all, outside of not liking sun, I understood it to be that humans who were infected lost themselves and were mutated physically but inside all that was left was basic feral primal senses from back when humans first started out.
More than rational thought, the vampires in the book were terrified of Neville, and had built an entire society of vampires...with a boogeyman, of course, that lived 'in the woods', and would get you if you strayed too far from mommy and daddy vampire.
Neville was their Dracula.
A legendary monster.
It’s not bleach it’s vinegar

They aren’t zombies and they aren’t dead. They are people infected with a virus. They exhibited logical thought all along. The reason the head “zombie” was after him, was because he kidnapped his wife. The snare trap with Fred the mannequin was set by the “zombies”. The alternate ending shows the more human side of the “zombies”, but they realized it wouldn’t play well with audiences and went with the mindless action ending instead.
The book ending is better than both. There was much more exposition about the monsters , they’re not true zombies, closer to vampires they could speak. One of his best friends would call out every night, “COME OUT , ROBERT NEVILLE!” The females would tease him at his door at night and pretend they weren’t infected.
The book inspired both 'Night of the Living Dead' and 'Salem's Lot'.
Haha yes. I remember Robert saying he almost feels tempted to do it with them😂
@@morisakarleign3014 No, no. He says he wants to rpe them. Specifically that. He ALSO says he wants to rpe the woman who shows up at his house.
When I watched it in the cinema (amazing experience btw) The whole room went quiet once they realised Sam was bit. This movie and Will did such a great job at conveying emotions for this part. Can't wait for the 2nd one.
The "zombies" showed their intelligence and emotion a lot in the movie, like when the main one partially exposed himself to the light screaming a very distorted "NO!" when the female was taken. Or when they set the trap just like the one he had used knowing enough to use his mannequin as bait. The whole ending is really a coordinated attack to get the kidnapped victim back from the terrible monster that only comes out in the day and takes their people way never to be seen again. The idea behind the original ending and the name of the story is that humanity itself has passed into legend as the unknowable deadly creatures of a bygone era inspiring fear and campfire stories long after the last of us has actually gone. Personally I think there's no comparison it's the superior ending.
Could’ve said it any better 💯🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yeah, alternative ending to me is better as well.
No hate I watch a lot of the channel, but I agree 100%, there's plenty in the film that shows they're a lot more human than just a zombie, but it's an Alex reaction so he's too busy screaming about his gooch to notice some plot details :D
100% agree
I don't know if it was mentioned yet, but in the alternate ending version of the movie, there was also a scene with the kid where he was playing in a koi pond. While he was playing, he mentioned that the water was cold, which triggered the idea about using ice to lower the female monster's heart rate before givingnher the antidote.
The dog dying in this is genuinely sadder than in John Wick, and that’s saying something
One of my fave movies of all time. I also read the book and i can tell you its pretty much 98% different but the sort of main point of the story was how after all the years of catching and trying to understand the vampires he never really came to understand that they were in their own rights people too. In the end he had become the monster
I was actually surprised by how emotional this movie made me. I’ve always liked it😊
I saw original ending at first but i also saw many signs that these zombies were different, had intelligence and emotions way before i saw the alternate ending. The boss Zombie and the trap he laid was very strategic and vengeful like he took it personally when Will took the female zombie who's his mate or partner. Also the Boss zombie exposing himself to sunlight when Will first took his mate & he showed then how upset he was by that, way more than usual. Will even mentions that unusual behaviour, he clearly hasn't been paying enough attention to learn that side of them, since they were still a huge threat.

"Is there a movie where there’s a dog and everyone thinks it’s going to die but it doesn’t?”
Yeah. It’s called Prey, aka Predator 5.
The cat survives the first Alien by being much smarter than the humans (except Ripley)
Also the dog in Jeepers Creepers 2, though it had a much more minor role, also the dog survives in the movie Crawl.

And Independence Day.
Spoiler alert
fun fact: when the mannequins gets moved to the tunnel and the head moves will wasnt told about it so thats pretty much his real reaction after filming more or less alone for the wole movie
I believe that it wasn't actually the mannequin but a mime that they dressed up to look like the mannequin and they didn't tell Smith and the mine just moved really slowly so he was legitimately freaking out.
Gotta disagree on your thoughts on the alternate ending. It's better to me because it adds to this story the meaning of the original story. Robert is the legend that the title refers to, he's the boogeyman killing them and taking them in their sleep. I will agree that it could have been executed much better and hinted at better at times but there were scenes that showed glimpses of their emotions and intelligence throughout. (Like setting a trap for him with the mannequin or showing visible anger and the leader staying in the light when one is trapped by Robert) I think the big change most people see with the tone given to the infected with this ending is how Robert realizes that he's been killing so many and causing that kind of pain to them that he felt losing Sam and his family.
Just tell him to read the book.
It's f**king Richard Matheson, you can't go wrong.

The reason a majority prefers the alternate ending is because 1) it’s much closer to the original source and 2) it is a much more thought provoking ending.
Basically our hero learns that these creatures are thinking, feeling individuals. Like humans, they are able to love, grieve, hate, and let go. He realizes that in their eyes, he is the monster, the creature to fear, the boogeyman that steals their loved ones. His intentions to find a cure were good for humans, but to these creatures are essentially the new humanity and he is part of an old “legend” they will tell tales of.
This movie depressed the hell out of me when I was a kid, but I loved it for some reason
This movie is why I prefer when movies don’t or have very little music in them, it doesn’t give away what’s about to happen next as bluntly and I’m able to get lost in what I’m I watching more.
I like how he say " how did you miss it from that close" as if robbert wasnt just bit in the sholder and thrown through and off a second floor balcony.
I feel bad that you had so many jump scares, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching you freak out. I don't like horror movies, so I Am Legend is the closest I've ever gotten. When you saw Sam and started getting giddy about her I knew her death scene would get you. I still cry every time I see it.
They arent zombies so to say, they are mutanter, that's why he called them "humans" "infected", "k-45's", they are human where the cancer cube boosted muscularure, endurance, breath and pulse rate (that's why they where "bobbing" so much, increase circulation), but their mind digressed into more primitive predators. That's why the main infected poked his head into the sun when Bob used the trap on his mate, they arent zombies, they are capable of feeling and thoughts similar to smart animals such as dogs or wolf's.
most people prefer the alternate ending there were already hints that they were smart or could learn biggest being that likely they set up the trap that ended up with Sams death. and when he originally kidnaps the female "zombie" he goes against his base instincts to stay out of the sun and threateningly stares him down to kind of assert being the Alpha of his group.
This was made as a book first, and in THAT the end talks about Will Smith’s character is in fact the ‘nightmare’ the killer, the hunter of those ppl. They are terrified of him, he’d steal, do pole prod and give shots that killed the infected ppl. The infected ppl got desperate to kill him, then he stole their … leaders’ woman, and they came for her. He came to see that THEY saw HIM as the monster. Why they tried to trap him.
It was a matter of perspective.
This movie is so goddamn underrated, and so emotional. I almost cried a few times, I hope more people watch this!! One of my faves !!
Have you read the book? I loved it.
Wouldn't take much for something caused by human or nature to happen... just 1 rouge bit of genetic code....
The zombies demonstrated their intelligence/emotions a few times during the movie
The original ending and the ending of the book is so much better.
Basicaly, at the end Robert understands that the Alpha is attacking him because he captured his partner. He understands that the infected are living in some form of society. He understands that this world is no longer his. He understands that he is the monster that comes in the day (which if to the infected what the night is for us), the booguyman, the monster under the bed, the thing that lurks when you're most vulnerable to snatch infecteds never to be seen again, he has become legend.
(and so he lets the alpha get his girl back and stops searching for a cure).
How many time yall gotta say this

I love I Am Legend! The alternate ending is actually the "canon" one as they are continuing the story in a sequel. 2 other 2007 films you should see are No Country for Old Men and There Will be Blood! Great films 🎥

Making an alternative ending most people haven't seen the canon ending is one of the dumbest things ever. I didn't like the movie's ending, but that doesn't mean you can change it after the fact just to milk it as a franchise.
@@xviper2k They definitely should've gotten their ducks in a row if there was even potential for a sequel... Shouldn't have been indecisive as they were but... We are in the age of franchise/sequels/reboots/etc. I'll watch the sequel and praise it if it's good or trash it if it's bad.

The two endings really messed me up man. I get the rougher ending but it makes sense that big boy zombie wanted his wife back and showed they could think with the trap. As an adult the first ended makes sense but i badly needed the nicer one when i was a kid.
No its logic, since they went for a sequal, and now the alternative is actully canon.
They're actually closer to vampires than zombies. In the book they taunt and tease him and can talk, and they are self aware and make relationships.
I like that in the book, the title is actually referring to the fact that he is the boogeyman to them.... he is the myth they are scared of. The one who hunts them.
The butterfly tattoo is a callback to the first flashback scene when his daughter does the “mommy look it’s a butterfly” thing
They're NOT zombies, they're ALIVE but INFECTED PEOPLE dude. )
So basically the zombie he caught was the mate of the huge one in the torn shirt. And the zombies set a trap to catch Robert. I freaking love this movie. Watched it a million times since it came out
So the alternate ending is actually way closer to the book ending. The "Zombies" are considered beasts by him, but at the end of the movie he finds out that they were only attacking him because he was killing so many of them with his tests. They basically considered him a serial killer. His realization at the end is that they were not people anymore, but they were also not monsters. They were just protecting themselves from him. I actually very much prefer this alternate ending but I can understand why people would like the theatrical ending better.

when they film movies like this (at least when this was made) they'd shut down multiple blocks for the parts. during filming you can walk through the sets while they're not working. it's pretty cool. we walked around downtown brantford while they were filming silent hill probably 20 years ago.
“Would they even be capable of those thoughts/emotions?”
“Where was that throughout the whole movie?”
After he literally just watched the main vampire/zombie guy set up traps and round up a troop to hunt Robert down in order to get revenge for him “kidnapping” one of his own… cmon now Alex 😅
They were shown to be smart throughout the movie, who do you think set up the trap that got Sam killed? It was the Darkseeker leader. He wanted revenge for Bob kidnapping one of the Darkseekers, and got it with the same type of trap.
If you take a look at the rest of the movie. They did show those traits from the alternate ending.
They saw he spoke to the mannequins and moved one. They used the exact same trap on him that he used to capture the woman. The "king" showed emotion when his wife/daughter was captured but had to restrain himself from making a rash suicidal decision to rush the man with a gun in broad daylight.
Hi Alex.. --- This is actually the THIRD telling of the original story.. The first was called "The Last Man on Earth" in 1964 with Vincent Price.. Then "The Omega Man" in 1971.. And then this one in 2007.
I like this movie but I always thought the omega man was the best of the three.
Wouldn't take much for something caused by human or nature to happen... just 1 rouge bit of genetic code....
29:08 To be fair it did show that they have rational thoughts throughout the movie. Thats how they trapped him. They trapped him the same exact way he trapped one of them which takes intelligence. They planted one of the same dummies he always talks to in position to trick Robert, which suggests they actually knew all about him and certain areas he frequently visits (and if you pay attention closely in that scene, the head actually does move which is the first time I actually noticed that. Apparently the Director did stuff like that to really make it feel like we were going crazy). The head infected was clearly pissed about getting his lady taken, so it shows they have some level of emotional range too. Robert just believed that they didn't have any intelligence or emotional awareness. The alternate ending shows not only when Robert realizes this, but why the head infected chose to go after him. So instead of sacrificing himself, he chooses to give the lady infected back, which saves him and the family. As cool as the original ending was, I always preferred the alternate ending. There was so much Robert had to go through alone and so many negative things to happen to him, that it felt like overkill to give an ending where he just dies. And when you think about it, it kinda makes more sense than the original ending. When he recognizes the butterfly, he's supposed to come to some kind of profound revelation, but instead he just blows himself up which he was gonna most likely do anyways if he couldn't escape.
18:04 I can't think of anything but for some reason I did think about a scene in Independence Day with Will Smith in it. There was a cool scene where a dog gets a quick lil close call moment, but thats about it. If you've never seen that movie then I highly recommend. And while you're at it, you should check out I' Robot and Enemy of the State with Will Smith too. He's got a lot of good ones and those are a MUST WATCH!
“I Am Legend,” however, was set in 2012, according to the movie’s script.

It was the main Darkseeker partner he took captive and he saw how he did it. So the Darkseeker set his own trap by moving one of the mannequins to try get her back. I actually prefer the “alternate” ending, as it explains the trap.
They actually shut streets down in Manhattan for a few hours to film the car scenes. I remember waiting a really long time to cross the street because they were filming "a movie with Will Smith", that's all we knew at the time anyway.
3:05 I thought her claim that they cured cancer looked very good, very real at the time and very convincing.
The intelligence is displayed when he gets caught in the trap. He kidnapped the Darkseekers mate, and that darkseeker analysed his trap and recreated it to trap Bob. It copied the mechanics of the trap after seeing it used once, and had the intelligence to not only replicate it, but bait the trap with Fred because it was smart enough to identify the emotional connection to Fred as a friend of Bob's. Ultra subtle, but definitely there.
Mike Patton from Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, etc. did the "voices" of the zombies. His vocal ability still astounds me.
Wow, I didn’t know that
Besides the Slap Mcgee moment. This is one of those movies we can see why Will Smith is one of the greats. The emotions he can get on camera is amazing.
The darksiders did have some level of intelligence left, take the scene on the bridge with the mannequin which was a trap they made mimicking his trap from earlier
So, the alternate ending, is actually the original ending to the story that existed before this movie was made. What’s supposed to be happening, is Robert realises that the” mindless animals” he has been hunting, are actually in a sense still people. That’s when he realises, HE is the boogie man. He is the monster that comes during their sleeping hours, kidnaps, their loved ones, who are then never seen again. Those ones that attacked his house were basically trying to rescue their leader’s girlfriend
So, I completely forgot that the dog's name was Sam until I watched this. Haven't watched this film in over five years, and since then, I've gotten a wonderful little pup named Samantha! She's a 2 year old German shepherd/black lab mix, looks very similar to the one in this film!

The good thing about his movies are the fact that he doesn’t seem to be acting. It’s like what he would do in different situations like Independence Day
Great observation!
This movie scared me so much.....as a kid. I rewatched it and WOW what a movie.
The creatures aren't as dumb as you think, you weren't paying attention at all because the alternate ending actually makes more sense than you think (and it's canon so there's that), the "vampires," more so the leader clearly demonstrated a form of intelligence and thought as he was able to set up the trap with the mannequin and he showed they have emotional connections considering the leader was willing to suffer 3rd degree burns in order to show his anger and frustration at losing his wife so no the alternate ending doesn't suck, the theatrical ending is what sucks.
The alternate ending is actually really accurate to the book but of course Hollywood has to go their own route
The original short story this was based on is very different, with a very different ending. Several movies over several decades have been made based on that story.
The Omega Man certainly comes to mind.
I think the best adaptation of the novella is 1964's "The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price. Matheson wrote the screenplay for it, which is why it is such a close adaptation.
Your dog is yours faithful and true to the last beat of their heart. You owe it to them to be worthy of such devotion
FUCK this guy knows how to pick movies! fucking hell alex is THE reactor on the whole youtube right now!
They aren't UNDEAD/ZOMBIES, they are actually just infected... they develop their own society and language. The "alternate" ending was actually the original planned ending but when shown to test audiences they rejected it so they changed the ending.

If I recall the alternate ending was actually the original ending. But test audiences didn't like it so they added the ending where he dies. But then they also said that alternate (original) ending is the canon one. So it's really confusing. But at least it explains how there is a second one if that ending where he lives is canon. This means the zombies (granted not really zombies) have some sort of emotion. The head male zombie just wanted his woman back. It does add some interesting twist if they have some emotions, but still, its weird.
"What's it called when something is so freaking cute you wanna strangle it?" Why did i connect to that question so hard????
Will Smith jokes with never be old. That's Slap-stick comedy at its finest. 😂
at the moment i am going through some very bad financial problems on the verge of losing my house, its nice to come to this channel and forget about that and see someone enjoy a movie and just leave the stress for at least a little while. its nice to not think about wanting to leave this place and just watch a movie with someone.
so thank you!
Man im sry for what u are going thru. I was in a similar situation few years ago even tho im too young but watching my parent go thru all that stress and then us moving alot was rlly traumatising but things will get better eventually trust me. U are not alone

I cried for Samantha the first time I watched this movie. Now I cried again.
Alex... Do you know hurt equal to death of Sam the dog.?
The amount of ads you have put in this video, you beach 😂❤
Watching this movie brings back so many nostalgia moments. I can’t believe this came out 16-17 years ago
Alternate ending was a little nod to the book with how they are capable of rational thought & consider him the monster
"I Am Legend" (2007) is the third film adaptation of the novel "I Am Legend" following 1964's "The Last Man on Earth" and 1971's "The Omega Man".
They're making a sequel and the alternate ending is the true ending they're going with
They’re closer to vampires than zombies, with the deadly allergy to sunlight and attraction to blood.

Wow, that impression of a person high on "Weed Road" was exactly like the character that gets high in Cabin in the Woods. I'd love to see a reaction to that one too!
