Hello. I'm a local from the island. The hotel opened in 1989 and closed 2 years later. The reason it closed was because the lack of customers and It was not because it had a casino. Hotels like this need the Azoren Gov. approval and if they had a casino it was because it was approved by the local Gov. As you noticed in the Boca do Inferno view, the weather is very unstable and can be very foggy and cloudy for days. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere on the top of the crater and the roads are narrow with a lot of turns. So when its foggy it can be stressful to drive there. The hotel is located in a place that is going to need very specific type of tourists, people who really enjoy calm, relax and nature vacation. Especially in the winter. The fact that the Azores were never a popular or know turistic place and with only 2 airlines flying to the islands for decades with expensive prices it didnt help either. Only a few years ago lowcost companies like Raynar started flying to the islands. By the way, the hotel has been sold and i believe they will start rebuilding it soon.

I just got back from a two day trip to Sao Miguel last week. Of the 45 countries and hundreds of cities I've been to, the Azores (yes, I know they're part of Portugal) are by far the most underrated destinations for Americans. Stunning scenery.
Yeah Azores are so amazing!!! The islands does not have the infrastructure to turn into another Iceland as far as crowds go....I hope it stays quiet and quaint.
@@eggyolked108 mm... Im curious, where are you from and what you mean by that? The Azores are getting imigrabts though, from Africa, gypsies, mainland portuguese and brazillians, there is even here abd there some spaniards or russians. But i would say it doesnt even reach 2% of the Azorean population.
We sailed to the Azores in 2018 and spent about 10 months on the island of Terciera and 2 weeks in Sao Miguel. Those two weeks were on a whole different level!!
The lake in sete cidades one side is blue because of the reflection of the sky and the green from the reflection of the trees on the mountain. Hotel closed because there wasn’t enough people staying there and it is extremely humid. The hotel has recently been purchased and you can no longer go inside or get on the roof. Awesome video.
The islands are very moist and that’s why there all very green and I’ve been going to the island of terceira since I was six months old I remember it being raining on one side of the island then driving over to the other side and it being sunny so the islands are just so beautiful and so worth going to.

Both my parents were from there, I visited for 3 weeks, well 2 on the island and one week on the mainland in 2001 and all I kept asking was " Why Would you ever think of leaving this place.
There is a song called “Let the Love take Control” that was filmed in S.Miguel that takes you on a journey through the various little gems of this incredible island.

Charles Lang Thanks Charles! I've (Rafael) wanted to go for years now and when the opportunity came up, we had to strike! Amazing adventure! Can't wait to get back...
I was at each of these places in 2017. My family is from this island. Many of the little things my parents would say to me I never understood. Until I stepped off the plan. Amazing feeling to be there. And to finally understand what my parents where talking about.
Thank you so much for making this video, showing all the beauties of where I live! I'm so lucky to be able to experience every day, you're wonderful landscapes! ❤
Stayed with family in Sao Miguel for 3 months recently. I wish I got out more to explore but I only did occasionally. Though its cool that you are promoting the island for its true beauty.
Awesome video, I'm from there in live in Canada now I haven't been back since I moved to Canada in 1988. I one day want to go back and show my wife and kids how beautiful it is there. I remember all those places thanks for going there 😁

When was this? I just came back from Azores. So beautiful. I'm jealous you got drone shots at Boca do Inferno and no one was there. We went there on our 2nd day and it was too foggy. Then went again on our 2nd to last day bc the webcam showed it was clear but everyone else on the island did the same so it was a bit crowded. Also the hotel was too cloudy to see the view but it was cool bc it made the experience even more creepy and we entered from the basement service entrance which made it even more scary haha
Damn, those views and beautiful shots, had to subscribe ! Your no bullshit approach to travel vlogging is so refreshing to see, I also like that you always put a price breakdown for the day.
The road you guys are when you said its a strait drop on either side its cool however that's where they do the Sete Cidades Rally stage, now imagine driving on that dirt road at 90+Kmh, crazy hey? São Miguel is beautiful, great video thanks for sharing.
Just returned from a week on Sao Miguel, and a further week on Faial. This was our second visit to the gorgeous AZORES; nine islands in total, and all of them have flights or ferries between them. They have the verdant beauty characteristic of volcanic islands (though, in this case, most of the volcanoes are classified as 'dormant': not 'extinct'). Azorean pineapples have to be the sweetest in the World. However, in the four years which have elapsed since our last visit, there has been a great increase in the number of tourists.
This is December 2023 and, I just watched this video. The islands are still stunning, the pineapples yummie and, the people out there I just love 💕💓💕 Absolutely worth visiting again and again but, please don't tell too many people!! The islands are perfect as they are and, I agree, mass tourism would destroy them so...please do not let that happen!! Looking so much forward to be back 🌹🌹🌹
@@Jetmab04 Thank you for seconding our opinion of the Azores. And - if anyone is daunted by the prospect of visiting more than one island - do contact the English company 'ARCHIPELAGO CHOICE', who specialise in island holidays, and know the best of hotels. They arrange all of your inter-island flights and transfers. The founder was enchanted by the Azores when a young man; and used them as a springboard for other island groups. Very comforting for first-timers.
Thanks Mahsa! Someone just asked us so re-posting our tips: Try to rent a car if you can (helps you see a LOT of the island). Definitely check out Ponta da Ferraria. You'll need to research what time low tide is and go then. Budget 2 hours there. Also- a must try is a dish called Cozido. We went to Restaurante Tonys and it was 👌🏼💯. We'll be including all of that in the next few videos we release but by then you all will have probably left. Safe travels and enjoy for us!
the reason why that hotel is abandon is because they company essentially ran out of money and had to leave to job incomplete! amazing video guys, i can wait to go back again to my family’s home:)
The abandoned hotel is called "Monte Palace" and was buyed by a chinese group and, according to the news, will reopen in 2021. Very nice video. Congrats. Cheers
Hey guys that was terrific. I booked my trip to SM back in January to visit Oct this year. Can’t wait. And I did book a car so wahoo! Fabulous footage how did you get those aerial shots. Lol. Brilliant Thk you. Am more excited now.
Vicki Thanks Vicki! If you're into the outdoors and beautiful sights, this is the place for you! Glad you got the car too, lets you explore the island infinitely...let us know if you have any questions we can help answer?
I read that the abandoned hotel was built with the intention of being a casino, but when gambling wasn’t approved in the area they had to file for bankruptcy and never opened. The original plans were for for a 20,000 square foot casino including slot machines and table games. I don’t know how the busses would get there though
Int Affair-- I’m so sorry- I was totally kidding. It’s such a beautiful site i thought “what’s the most absurd thing someone would have tried to build there?” That would be a casino with coach busses driving in and out on that small road daily. Great video though. I see someone has the real explanation. I’m glad. Sorry again
Drone laws are a touchy subject. They are constantly changing. As we’re not officials and probably not the best to give legal advice on drone piloting, our recommendation is to check online before your trip to see if there are any new laws or requirements for flying. I can tell you that we've never had an issue, anywhere we've been, with airport security trying to confiscate our drone. Hope this helps! Safe travels!
Hi, Just subscribed. How long did you guys stay there? one or two days? What time of the year? I am planning a eurotrip and I would like to start from Ponta delgada. Thanks, cool vid.
I heard on another vlog that the hotel was originally owned by a rich frenchman who thought people would pay top dollar to stay in a fancy hotel there, but it turns out that it was too expensive and so it didn't get any business.
The earthquake in the 1990’s may have compromised the foundation of the 200 room hotel. Just a guess. It’s a pity the hotel is not in use. I would book a room for sure. The view is breathtakingly beautiful.
@@IntAffair I take this opportunity to invite you to follow "Azores, What Else", both here on TH-cam, as on Instagram and other social networks. Best regards.

Thumbs up 👍🏼, , at this time I live in Fresno California, but plan to move to Florida next year. Dreaming of being free.! Yeah, I'm also a " TH-camr "✌🏻️

Heading there in June with my soon to be wife for our honeymoon. We are also renting a car and doing some air bnb how did you find the driving over there? As it will be my first time driving in Europe.
It was like driving on back country roads. You'll only hit "traffic" in the downtown area and even that is very manageable. In other words; you'll be just fine!
Annnnd you messed the legend up.. xP. Princess Antilia's eyes where said to be Blue and the Shepard's Green. And its the same lake with two different colour sides :) but appart from that you did good. Still thats only one great location on the island ( the west side , but not completely through ), still missing A LOT MORE to see. But thanks!
That hotel was too early for its time. Now is the time for it. Also heard it was Crooked French business man who took the $ and ran. I saw it when it was new over 30 yrs ago , it was gorgeous.
Isabel Andrade So many to choose from! It was hard picking but we are really glad we went to São Miguel! Now we'll have to hit up some of the other islands when back on that side of the world...😎
Paul Louvion Thanks Paul! We loved Luso! We didn't take the additional insurance as we already have international coverage for the most part. Our experience was hassle free. The guy that met us at the airport was really nice and explained everything thoroughly. He even gave us his Whatsapp number in case we had any issues. We did get a parking ticket and were able to communicate quickly with them on how we should handle it. We just paid it online and it was taken care of. No hidden charges or BS of any kind from our experience. Would easily rent again!
You will find a lot about the MONTE PALACE HOTEL if you Look TH-cam „LOST PLACES Monte Palace São Miguel“ or just „ Monte Palace São Miguel“. Ist is very interesting. I am German, and have since 1996 a small Holyday house in Mosteiros, and I am there for 6 to 12 weeks each year....for me São Miguel is The Hawai of Europe!
My parents are azorean and I barely can understand the accent from Sao Miguel. Found out it was the French that used that island during the slave trade so they sound more French.
I've never been anywhere as beautiful as Sao Miguel...that said, I didn't find the locals to be the most friendly. Not saying that they were rude (except for the gas station attendant in Furnas), but most were not very hospitable. We had a better experience on Terceira.
Tiffany Green We got the manual. They're usually a little cheaper than the automatics. Also, was nice having a manual on all the ups and downs of the island. Automatics also work great if you're more comfortable with them 👍🏼
Int Affair looking forward to this trip in less than 3 weeks, but nervous about getting around. Really enjoyed your videos, hopefully it will be easy to navigate to these places. Thanks again for responding back so quickly.
Tiffany Green Don't worry, getting around is really chill! Download Maps.me if you want reliable offline maps on your phone. Make sure to get some cozido and hit ferraria (check for low tide times). Safe travels ✌🏼

The islands are still stunning, the pineapples yummie and, the people out there I just love 💕💓💕
Absolutely worth visiting again and again but, please don't tell too many people!!
Loved your video! Thanks for amazing drone shots! We're heading there tomorrow! any exclusive tip?
Nice. Thanks for introducing the Azores to me. I wanna go!!
People always just show the bigger Island the smaller ones are just as beautiful shame.
👍👏👏 Thank you. Good to know!
My family is from there...i hope to visit sometime in my life.
Sata Rallye Açores is made partially on those thin roads next to the lake! Search for it! 😁 It's one of the best stages.
Azores Airlines Rallye :)
Sad that that Hotel was abandoned! Foggy like San Francisco in Sao Miquel.
ahhhh my home!
Liliana Medeiros Thanks for sharing your home with us!
I'm Portuguese Canadian ur beautiful.....
We will have 3-4 days there. Does it make sense to base out of one hotel and then drive to all of the sites? Wha is the best place to stay?
How long is the hike ? hours or half a day thanks
The hike itself is about 20 minutes each way
What drone did you use? Any special permits required?
Hi guys, this video is awesome :)
We're going to Sao Miguel in April, can't wait to be there!!
Btw, what song is it at 2:55? Love that
I read that the abandoned hotel was built with the intention of being a casino, but when gambling wasn’t approved in the area they had to file for bankruptcy and never opened. The original plans were for for a 20,000 square foot casino including slot machines and table games. I don’t know how the busses would get there though
Great video by the way
samlol23 Thanks! Not gonna lie...kinda glad the whole casino thing didn't work out...
Int Affair-- I’m so sorry- I was totally kidding. It’s such a beautiful site i thought “what’s the most absurd thing someone would have tried to build there?” That would be a casino with coach busses driving in and out on that small road daily. Great video though. I see someone has the real explanation. I’m glad. Sorry again
Nice video, love you broll and drone footage. We are going to Sao Miguel next week!
Jay Nadtochiy Fellow Washingtonians?? You all are going to love it!
Great videos! We’re planning to go to the Azores next year and wondering what time of year you visited?
We were there in October
I'm from sao miguel acores its a beautiful place I'm really recommend
😍
Do you need to have any prior approval to fly a drone?
Drone laws are a touchy subject. They are constantly changing. As we’re not officials and probably not the best to give legal advice on drone piloting, our recommendation is to check online before your trip to see if there are any new laws or requirements for flying. I can tell you that we've never had an issue, anywhere we've been, with airport security trying to confiscate our drone. Hope this helps! Safe travels!
Hi, Just subscribed. How long did you guys stay there? one or two days? What time of the year? I am planning a eurotrip and I would like to start from Ponta delgada. Thanks, cool vid.
3 days 😃
I heard on another vlog that the hotel was originally owned by a rich frenchman who thought people would pay top dollar to stay in a fancy hotel there, but it turns out that it was too expensive and so it didn't get any business.
Which month/season did you visit?
The earthquake in the 1990’s may have compromised the foundation of the 200 room hotel. Just a guess. It’s a pity the hotel is not in use. I would book a room for sure. The view is breathtakingly beautiful.
They are the same lake lol just separated by a bridge, so the light reflects differently
Awesome great video I'll be there in August
James Freitas 🙌🏼 have a blast (and some cozido) for us!
Really interesting, keep up de good work.
😍
@@IntAffair I take this opportunity to invite you to follow "Azores, What Else", both here on TH-cam, as on Instagram and other social networks. Best regards.
🇵🇹🇺🇸,
Nice vedio. That's Hawaii in Europe.
Having said that I plan to sail to all the islands, From Florida one day.
From one Portuguese to another.
Thumbs up 👍🏼, , at this time I live in Fresno California, but plan to move to Florida next year. Dreaming of being free.! Yeah, I'm also a " TH-camr "✌🏻️
Luis Sousa Obrigado Luís! Boa sorte realizado seus sonhos! All the best 🙌🏼
there are sharks in Hawaii, Azores dont have any sharks
THE TRUTH IS...
THE ISLAND S.miguel, IS THE PARADISE !
Nahn to busy the smaller Islands are better.
good! humidity makes it all green ;)
What car company did you guys rent from?
How was it getting your drone onto the island and flying any problems?

the hotel Palace Hill, has now been bought by a Chinese couple, will be rebuilt 😊 if I am not mistaken is planned to reopen all new in 2021 😍
Heading there in June with my soon to be wife for our honeymoon.
São Miguel is a beutiful island i love living here you should try and go to treceira ou pico if you do go to pico you should climb it there awsome
Isabel Andrade So many to choose from! It was hard picking but we are really glad we went to São Miguel! Now we'll have to hit up some of the other islands when back on that side of the world...😎
Int Affair glad i could help hope you like them as much as i do when you come back
The hotel stopped working due to the constant foggy weather.
Eu vivo nessa freguesia que vocês foram visitar as lagoas o nome dessa freguesia é SETE CIDADES
Were you statisfied of Luso? And did you have take any additional insurance for the car?
Great video
Thank you
Paul Louvion Thanks Paul!
You will find a lot about the MONTE PALACE HOTEL if you Look TH-cam
„LOST PLACES Monte Palace São Miguel“ or just „ Monte Palace São Miguel“.
Ist is very interesting.
I am German, and have since 1996 a small Holyday house in Mosteiros, and I am there
for 6 to 12 weeks each year....for me São Miguel is The Hawai of Europe!
The last Marranos lived their. The oldest synagogue in Europe on on Sao Miguel. Quick facts.
My parents are azorean and I barely can understand the accent from Sao Miguel. Found out it was the French that used that island during the slave trade so they sound more French.
I believe Sao Miguel was settled predominantly by the Portuguese...however Europeans from France and the Netherlands also settled there.
I went summer 2018 it was fun
😍Love the Azores!
17 Euro for Car rental !
you must be some kind of Bargain Masters
Oguz D We try to do our homework...Just booked another trip relatively cheap. Will cover it in some of the future videos!
Oguz D I fly to Sao Miguel in March for 10 days and I rent a car online for 7€ per day
@@gimli717 Hi Linus what company did you book your car rental through?
Did you book a manual transmission? Have any issues with the hills?
Chris Duncan The Name of the company ist CarDeLMar and I booked at Check24.de.
Only 16 Euro the car rental? where did u find that??
What camera was used and what drone?
I've never been anywhere as beautiful as Sao Miguel...that said, I didn't find the locals to be the most friendly. Not saying that they were rude (except for the gas station attendant in Furnas), but most were not very hospitable. We had a better experience on Terceira.
Can't say we agree. We met a lot of interesting/friendly locals!
When you rented a car, did you use an automatic or manual? Which do you prefer?
I'm going to ponta Delgado today
😍😍 Wish we were there right now!
