    It is winter here in Canada and I've set up a 20 gallon with ricefish to grow out before setting up my patio tub for breeding this summer. I'd love some tips on getting them to breed indoors and also for how to safely transition the fish from 8.2 ph hard indoor water, to much softer lower ph rain water. Thanks!

      I’d drip acclimate them and add crush coral in the pond to raise the ph. Indoor breeding is exactly the same as pond breeding only difference is separate the fry so all the fry that hatch on one day stay together and the otherwise they will compete with each other and only the ones that hatch first will raise up.

    I'm not a big fan of the Yarn Mop because I don't think anyone can say that a little fry can wiggle through, what the owner puts down. Give the mop enough room to expand to free the eggs. Scour Pad Mops on the other hand is promoted in some countries because it is better for the female to rub the eggs onto.

      Even after many inspections I have never encountered any issues with rotting eggs/ fry or issues with fish getting stuck in the mops.

      My ponds operate on “Thunder Dome” rule’s survival of the fittest leads to more robust fish. As I ado things in the ponds and I see them I will remove them but I don’t go out of my way to do it.
      But if they are an issue for you just use some shade netting or mesh to prevent them from getting in.

    Any issues with the black plastic increasing the water temps out of range?
    Edit: I breed Bosemani Rainbows. No problem getting them to get it on, just takes forever for the fry to get a decent size abs color up. Even with a good diet they're slow growers.

      No but I always have plants that partially cover the surface of the water so temperature swings are at a minimum

    Do you use the air stone or anything to put oxygen into your buckets?

    • @duthieaquatics
      @duthieaquatics  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t but when they are outside they culture algae that do it and when I have them inside I keep them in lower numbers per bucket so they don’t need an air stone with the natural gas exchange between the water and air.

    How would you recommend removing pond snails that got in rice fish ponds? I am trying to breed them and didn't learn of this issue until I already had a lot of snails in the ponds. I normally do nothing to remove them.

      So the things that could be happening are:
      1. The other fish are outcompeting them for food
      2.They have internal parasites like camalanus red worms
      3. They have a bacterial infection like TB which is causing them to waist away
      I recommend separating them and trying to feed the live foods or frozen foods and see if they are eating properly and gain weight again. Check to make sure there are no worms like this 🪱 poking out from their anus.
      And if none of them are the problem treat with antibiotics but keep in mind some bacteria can’t be treated.
