I actually really like Hoist. He’s the pinnacle of what an Autobot should be. In the episode of G1; “Hoist goes to Hollywood” he ends up being cast in a movie. When a stunt in a movies filming goes wrong, Hoist saves the lives of a few members of the cast. The director is so impressed that Hoist is offered a role in the movie. The other Autobots in the episode are the glory hounds, and more self centred bots. Hoist stands apart from them all by just having fun with the acting gig, and not seeking glory or fame. In IDW, Hoist is willing to face anything to protect fellow Autobots. He keeps fairly calm against Tarn, Combiners, and Metroplex. His worst fear also fits in well with his G1 depiction. Hoist is usually seen alongside Grapple, and if not Grapple then is always accompanied by someone else. As a G1 character mostly defined by his dynamic with another character, being alone is the perfect fear. In my opinion, Hoist is the definition of what makes the Autobots heroes. He’s friendly, heroic, and better at helping others than causing harm, and I hope a future series ends up putting this underused character in the spotlight.
I started commenting that Hoist would be a great rescue bot based on your description as I was watching the video. Then I saw that he is a rescue bot in the academy series, so it fits
Fun fact, when you beat the story of Transformers Autobots for the Nintendo DS(2007), you would unlock a Hoist inspired vehicle form for your custom character
In case anyone’s wondering, the little spider-like bug creature seen in the video is “Bob,” who is Sunstreaker’s pet domesticated Insecticon. The Cybertronian equivalent of a pet dog.
I told Sunsteaker it would be a huge responsibility he was going to have to put down news papers and feed it and then fake Tarn came and I was stuck in nothing.
The fear of loneliness is probably the realest and hardest realities that was ever shown in the TF franchise. I'm not familiar with Hoist, but his self-description in this comic is kinda sad and touching, as he is self aware of what his place in the universe is. He knows he's not as legendary as Optimus Prime, or as cool as Sideswipe (to set some examples), he's just him, nothing else. And the fact that his biggest fear is not being killed by a Decepticon, dying of a dangerous plague, or even turning into a bad bot, but ending up lonely makes this character even more palpable and earth grounded than any other character, so everyone can relate to him. And I'm not gonna lie, watching this video kinda made me somewhat emotional and sympathetic towards Hoist, because that's a very understandable and quite logical fear, because none of us wants to live without no one to talk to, and in the worst scenario, dying without anybody left to remember you.
I love the dynamic between him and Grapple, especially the characterization of them as best friends. I imagine Grapple is someone to keep Hoist company and Grapple has Hoist to listen to his building ideas. I think theyd like building legos together
There are times where I really relate to Hoist. I regularly attend a local Christian youth group that focuses on teens and young adults with troubled lives at home. How I first began attending is a long story, so I'll cut to the chase: I am the only normal one there. Both of my loving parents are present in my life, I have a roof over my head, I have food, water, I don't have any trauma or mental disorders. I'm normal. However, I don't wear my "normal" status as any badge of honor. I also don't bear it as a mark of shame. I *help* my fellow young people by reaching out my hand and pulling them out from the depths of their own personal darkness. Sometimes I feel ashamed and spoiled when compared to some of the kids who walk in our doors. But I always remind myself that I wasn't put into this world to waste time by wallowing in my own self-made guilt. I was put in a position to *help,* and that's what I need to keep my focus on. Great video Delta! I didn't even know Hoist was in the IDW comics. I'll get around to reading them some day lol.
You are a strong person and the world is better for having you in it. I know random affirmation from some online nobody isn't needed, but people like you deserve much more credit than you get.
I appreciate small-ish videos like this that focus on random guys like Hoist. I always liked the Hoist Spotlight, maybe because it was one of the first comics from the series I read
Thank you so much! There's so many characters to cover in IDW and so many other great videos out there, I wanted to cover some of the lesser known characters. I also try my hardest to make my videos short and to the point, don't wanna waste anyones time 💙
Aww yeah, IDW is my jam. That being said, this is one of those issues that tends to slip my mind when I'm thinking about highlights from the continuity, so I appreciate you highlighting it. And man, I really like your perspective on Hoist here. I know I tend to get swept up in some of the more out-there drama of IDW, so this is a great reminder to give stories like this their due. I know Hoist is a character that really resonates with some TF fans, and I think your video touches on why very nicely.
This upload couldn't have come at a better time. I was interested in hoist due to him sharing design elements with Trailbreaker. I'm gonna have to look more into him now that my interest has peeked even more. Wonderful video as always!
when i was younger and watching the gen 1 series for the first time, Hoist wasn't my favorite. I loved seeing Grimlock and Mirage and all the more appealing bots. But I've been rewatching all of gen 1 (just started gen 2 a little bit ago) and i fell in love with him. Compared to everyone else, who would throw a sarcastic complaint like Gears or just simply be in their own little world like Tracks or Sunstreaker, he was down to earth. He liked the attention when he got it, don't get me wrong but he also loved seeing everyone working hard together to get something done, helping out as much as he can. Work was something he was always prepared to help out with, his name is Hoist for a reason, being that he is there to help lift us up. Thank you for making this video about a bot I have grown to learn and love. You hit it on the nail on what makes him different from all the other bots in IDW (which i have to finish reading). He's simply just there to get things done and call it a day, but it doesn't mean he doesn't have his own pain. He's so "normal", it's the very reason he is seen as "unnormal"; In the before, middle and after the war, everyone is still dealing with their own issues but he doesn't show his to the others. Everyone is fighting over who had it the worst, but he doesn't do that. Everyone is shouting to be heard or to silent someone else, he just listens and talks when needed to. He shows more semblance of kindness then everyone else, for they think the world is evil but hoist wants it to change. He wants to hoist them to the better, but it only brings him down more.
Honestly coming from someone who has barely read any IDW comics. It can be quite daunting to get into. I think hoist is a cool character kinda always accepted that he is just a simple guy which is completely ok! (also I'm just like sunstreaker fr so don't let me pilot a ship)
I can really appreciate someone who just loves their favorite liking them because they can really relate and form a connection I feel the same way about Cosmos who is my favorite hes obscure he doesnt show up alot but he's still my favorite And I very much relate to him he's also alone alot in space on a thankless mission feeling underapperiated but loves doing what he does for the most part I'm rambling but I love IDW cosmos Loved your video keep it up
You know what's strange? I had this exact same revelation when I was working on a custom live action Hoist figure a while back, he's simple, he's no grand hero leading the charge against the powers of darkness, he's just a bot doing what he does
I'm really glad that you decided to discuss IDW, and that the character you did first was Hoist! Despite him having such a small role in MTMTE as a whole, this rlly unique moment always stuck out to me, and now I can see why james roberts put a normal character like Hoist in. It makes me wonder if they planned on having hoist in more stories later on, but couldn't because of the terrible time crunch put on to Lost Light. Awesome job! Also, if u really are planning on covering more IDW, i'd suggest reading the Till All Are One comics! It has some amazing character depth in not just popular characters like Starscream, but also in less known characters.
Really awesome you're covering IDW as well, especially it being one of my favourite stories from it. Spotlight Hoist really makes me wish we can see more "regular Joe" type characters get the spotlight (heh)
Hey man, been watching since your second video, and I just wanted to say keep up the fantastic work. Really been loving your videos. The vibe is so nice, like you're just sitting down in a hometown coffee shop to have a chat about comics. Great takes all around, and I hope this channel really grows, because you deserve it.
Hey, Thank you so much for posting this, it is excellent! I used it on an APLAC assignment on Ethos, Pathos, and Logos so you really saved me :) Keep up the amazing work!
I really wish we had an episode or a comic of some random, normal thing happening on Cybertron. No crazy plots, no dark backstories. I just want to see what life is like for the average bot. Maybe I'm weird, but I think seeing a slice of life of a day on pre-war Cybertron or even what the normal routine of an engineer like Hoist is like would be really interesting.
Because of the video, I',m going back to naming my Machine Wars figure Hoist. The fact that he is one of the most normal people out of the Transfromers lore will be something interesting to add for future stories I'm going to be writing. I woud not blame if you NEVER did a video on IDW Shockwave since that one will probably be the CRAZIEST of all and I'm a Shockwave guy lol
This is a great video and I know more less known character will be reviewed, my favorite Transformer is Cosmos and Hoist would hate Cosmos role for the Autobot
Im not interested in the idw transformers comics, but I was always a hoist fan because of his design in g1 and this video has solidified my love for the character
this was amazing!! hoist is great and really underappreciated. if you ever do another video for IDW though, have you considered swerve? would love to see it :)
Would love to get your take on Kup’s spotlight issue (and the follow up where Prowl and Springer’s conversation about the ethics of bringing him back and Springer’s roller coaster of emotions)
Kup is one on my short list for sure! I’ve already got next month’s IDW video scheduled, and am writing two more that mean a lot to me. Perhaps after that we can look into Kup

I was always born to act and save and I never get credit not even a small background cameo in Transformers One not even one.
Fun fact, when you beat the story of Transformers Autobots for the Nintendo DS(2007), you would unlock a Hoist inspired vehicle form for your custom character

I'm on the hunt for an ER Hoist atm, and while the toy seems to be "fine" it kinda fits his character!

Haha! IDW is a huge task to get through for sure. I always recommend people starting with Phase 2.
@@DeltaTrion Good to know!
I love when smaller transformers become important in certain runs

Hoist is one of my personal favorites glad to see some recognition
I’m still waiting on that call from Hazbro to be in a new movie but at least IDW got my back and makes me look cool.

HOIST MENTIONED!!! 🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥
What did you say I couldn’t hear you.
Got a new love for hoist now ❤
He really is so lovable
Oh did you now❤

Im not interested in the idw transformers comics, but I was always a hoist fan because of his design in g1 and this video has solidified my love for the character
He should be voiced by Mike judge (Hank hill) and for grapple(dale)
Tracks(boomhaur)
Huffer(bill)
I want;NO, no, NEED THIS to happen…

Well you just got one friend today.
Also Grapple, Seaspray, and warpath are wondering if they could join to.
Would anyone like an autograph.
