The Decepticons in DWJ's run are so interesting. They see the Autobots as evil, believe in honour, and treat Starscream & Shockwave with disgust for how much glee they take in destruction. Soundwave also has these qualities, but he moves them aside for the bigger picture. He kills humans to avoid setbacks, not for fun. The sea life is for fuel, despite his awe of it. And he threatens Thundercracker, to prevent second guessing/future questioning of the mission. To Megatron, this might be what a true decepticon is. An honourable warrior, but one that's willing to cross the line when needed.

Soundwave is already a pretty stoic character, and so having Shockwave like that too would make their interactions pretty bland, and just make them way more similar beyond name. His sadism is a great contrast to his constant speel of logic and science, as it makes him seem more self-centered when it comes to any scientific discoveries he makes, and just makes him a much more interesting person whenever he appears.
Another moment that shows Soundwave's decaying honor would be his interaction with Optimus! After the battle for the arc, Optimus gives him a chance to end the war and establish peace. Soundwave instead punches Optimus after considering it for just a moment. I think this shows how Soundwave is willing to close his eyes or cover his ears when it comes to moments of possible peace or Shockwave's brutality, since that punch was less of a "no" to Optimus, and more like a "shut up."
This was mentioned at 7:20, but that was a in a sort of epilogue. I do think it should be noted that during the 'consideration', SW was looking down at Ravage's body in his arms. OP is the one who shot ravage into his current state. Starscream just kicked the guy and SW disemboweled him for it, so I could very much see the punch as a 'F you for this' rather than mere rejection

Could definitely see it, a completely disillusioned Thundercracker trying to recover Skywarp from the Ark, mistaking what happened to him as something the Autobots did, only for Skywarp to have to slap some sense into him by showing how Arcee actually protected him despite having no rational reason to do so.
Soundwave and Thundercracker are the only two Decepticons who still see the original vision of Megatron, even the visionary himself lost sight of the Decepticon cause When bad leaders have good intentions...
Soundwave's immorality in this series hurts so good. His near-sympathetic portrayal has duped me into wanting good for him and his miniguys but then bud pulls some tragically corrupt deed and oof ouch my soul. Curious about how loyalty will be discussed in this video because SW's loyalty to Megatron is not yet obvious to me. His promising Meg to Astrotrain once found caught me off-guard. P'aps he was lying. P'aps his devotion is more targeted at the faction. I dunno. These premiere waits are such a tease I love it 👏
Holy crud, it didn't register for me until this video that Starscream might actually be dead, but you're right, that final fight looked pretty damning. 4:06 I'd argue that the scene shows he finds humans quite significant after all. The action registered to me as an unwillingness to let the humans go underestimated. It seemed like a kind of cursed respect. We've seen Soundwave, Thundercracker, and Onslaught (in his own quirky way) show amiable traits, but I'd also like to shout out Astrotrain for his grudging respect and sympathy for Spike's sacrifice at the hospital- and that was right after aiming a gun at a would-be ward of babies! (as noted in the director's commentary) It's amazing how DWJ manages to simultaneously bring out the best and worst of these 'cons. Absolutely riveting.
Which kind of makes Earthspark Soundwave easily the least sympathetic version of Soundwave. Even at his worst, he's always had at least some level of affection for his cassettes. ES Soundwave, on the other hand, views them as nothing more than disposable weapons, explicitly held prisoner in his service, and the first chance they get to escape him they take it.
@@dracodracarys2339 (Pardon my speedy response I got a notification) I've not seen enough of ES to know his usual depiction, but in that episode, Decoy, not only does Ravage sacrifice freedom to remain with Soundwave, but there was a cut-scene animatic that featured him giving her a cuddle for retrieving something needed for a scheme. He must be doing something right for that loyalty- just not enough to outweigh the others' desire for freedom from G.H.O.S.T. (and possibly SW himself)
The concept of Soundwave being more loyal to the Decepticon causes is something I noticed from the near end of IDW first continuity and in that series its Needlenose that chews Soundwave out for his manipulations. I defiantly think Onslaught overhearing Soundwave and Thundercracker's conversation will snowball into something bigger.
I hope they do something interesting with Thundercracker, he is always so close to reforming or finding something better! One of my favorite decepticons for sure.
I feel like what these Decepticons represent is what happens when honour has no compassion. It's not decayed, it's just without warmth. The Autobots don't overtly value honour as much as the Decepticons, and yet its their compassion that shines through again and again; sometimes, in spite of what honour might demand. By contrast, the Decepticons being honourable doesn't make them good, since they don't have kindness backing that up.
Amazing analysis of the great Wave. I feel his loyalty to the Deceptivon cause rather than Megatron was refreshing. However, what is the point of being loyal and honorable if the people around you are either cruel or backstabbers? And honestly, it's almost sad how a bit of hypocrite he is about honor, when he himself allowed the mutalition of Skyward and the lie, the kidnapping of Spike so the human is tortured, allowing Shockwave to torture the Autobots. It's quite downfall of how war is twisting those once individuals into war machines.
He’s been loyal to the Decepticon cause exclusively since Marvel UK comics in the 80-90s. Then again in IDW1 run for a decade. “The last true Decepticon”, “The perfect Decepticon”, “The Decepticon with a heart of gold” are all his titles. To me, it’s unfortunate that animation mediums keep on making him loyal to Megatron, thus making it a more known and utterly boring portrayal of an amazing character.
I have always loved Soundwave and him getting this big arc makes me so happy. This comic is amazing. Both sides have basically nothing and are forced to compromise their honor and beliefs if it means doing what they think is best or right. Time will only tell if there is a braking point.
DWJ is really tapping into that TFTM energy, where Soundwave is a loyal soldier to Megatron one moment (the Decepticon retreat from Autobot City) then in the next he's only out for himself (standing by as Starscream chucks Megs out the ship, taking a stab at leadership). I think that sequence in issue 6 with Soundwave and Optimus will produce something, someday - maybe even in this arc with Shockwave, who knows. Seems like they're seeding something, but I could be wrong. Anyway, great video!
Except he probably wasn't really out for himself when Megs got thrown out. There were like a dozen decepticons who supported Starscream all around him, and while he's strong, he wouldn't be able to overpower them all, and get killed.

In my opinion, the reasoning behind the Decepticons being as they were, is deeper than people have given credit for. In "The Five Faces of Darkness" you had the laborers that would become the Autobots and the military hardware that would become the Decepticons. They were created by the Quintessons to serve them. Though they were eventually driven off planet and for a long while there was peace, the military hardware couldn't break away from their programming. Despite it being an 80's cartoon meant to sell toys, that I think makes them kinda tragic in a way. Can't wait to see your thoughts on the stuff that whasn't been covered yet.

I'd really love a video about Skybound Thundercracker. I haven't read the Skybound comics and have learned everything I know about it from you, but if Skybound Thundercracker is in any sort of way similar to his usual self, I'd love for my 3rd favorite Transformer to get a video to himself.
If Shockwave had actually thrown Ravage into an incinerator I have no doubt in my mind that he himself would be found in pieces shortly after. *"You kicked my Ravage"* proves that Soundwave , even though he doesn't express himself much, *most definetly* keeps grudges.
I think that Thundercracker is a nice addition to this new iteration in the transformers universe since historically he’s always been sympathetic towards humanity.
As hard as it is to imagine a soundwave that completely switches sides I think that is the long-term goal. Perhaps he'll get really close and then Megatron will returns and he decides against it. It seems likely that Megatron is going to come back and fill the power vacuum in the Decepticons. But it seems like that itself seems like it could create like a splinter faction within itself.
I am very happy with the way Soundwave is being shown in the Skybound comics. Some of his other iterations were shown to be capable of empathy and honor, yet he also consistently chooses to do and say nothing about the less honorable actions of Megatron and other Decepticons. I love that this part of him is finally getting explored!
Soundwave does what needs to be done for the sake of the mission, even if he finds it distasteful He puts his faction first and anything else is a secondary consideration at best Except Ravage, for fuck's sake just give the man his cat back LOL
I know it may have been 10 days since, but, this Soundwave, from what I think, is the same one I've grown up with. Again, remembering the movie, this is the Soundwave that refused to leave Megatron behind, but had to see him be voted off Astrotrain. Him caring about Ravage can feel relatable, even specifically when you're a pet owner. But to Soundwave, they're more than just tools, than a means to an end, these minicons are like his family, his brothers. The way he was written, it's amazing, DWJ really did a good job even with other characters, like Onslaught talking to possibly still alive Brawn. 1 day left until Issue 12, Delta. Its such a simple though to make a transformers series where they give the characters each they’re individual emotion and also add new ones to people that never got too much spotlight, it’s truly remarkable writing
IDW has done some pretty great work with these characters too. That being said, because there is so much content in that run, there's a lot to read through. I think that's why Skybound has been doing so well, as it's a way for people to jump on board without having to catch up on over a decades worth of reading.
@@DeltaTrion I Agree, the reason why shockwave is one of my favorite transformers now was it being influenced by the IDW comics the story on how he got his body then later on after his initial conquest to his brutality to his people it’s truly chilling and just good writing and it shows how they built from shockwaves initial character and cranked it up Soundwaves a nice one too but he’s always had more spotlight then shockwave since g1 I feel like, that one scene when he carry’s megatron after everyone else retreats is such a homage to the base of his character but now sky bound adds genuine human emotion ontop of his loyalty, gives him some nice depth, I love robots finding/expieriencing emotion it’s usually nice writing.
Great video- I'm not sure it's his honor actively decaying, as the skywarp incident happened pretty early on. I'd guess he lost honor a long time ago, increasingly cutting corners to get things done. As the comic progresses, I think what we're seeing his him finally hitting his limit- now that resources are low and everyone is getting desperate, it's now the ones he cares about that have become the victim of careless efficiency.
"you kicked my Ravage" is such an interesting line, because of how much of a loyalist Soundwave is, and maybe a foreshadowing of how his honor is bound to crack if not cracking the moment he set out to kill Starscream. Because the deception cause is all about equality, no division by casts, no people superior than others, all brothers ,all equals. In TF Prime Laserbeak is usually reffered to as "pet" or "drone" but only by Autobots, all Decepticons reffer to Laserbeak as "he/him" aknowledging him as an individual. Now granted, TF prime Decepticons are anything but loyalists, they're a bunch of corrupt fuckers bound by common enemies and Megatron's authority, but it's interesting to see how in this moment of sheer adrenaline and rage, Soundwave regresses to reffer to Ravage as "my Ravage". That's not brotherhood, that's property, and im confident in this interpretation since at the end, he does tell the other guy who's name scapes me rn and if i check yt is gonna reset my comment, BUT, he reffers to his life as property as well. Maybe Sounwave's trauma at having to sacrifice one of his men lead him to this coping mechanism, where he forces himself to look at the lives of his subordinates as property to be protected, since if he didn't, he wouldn't be able to forgive himself for what he's done, which is why he only remains silent when seeing things he admires the beauty off get destroyed in front of him. He ignores it because not doing so would get him to blame himself for his sins yet again
I’m really looking forward to the culmination of Soundwave’s arc in this series. It seems like he’s being set up to be a bystander to more and more atrocities as a bystander until his sense of honour finally cracks through. I think that potential for a truce between him and Optimus set up earlier might lead to Soundwave finally turning heel and giving the Autobots a chance to show him their side. I doubt he’s become an Autobot in the long run, but I could see him splitting from both factions to create a third party, one not really interested in fighting the other two, but wholly focused on fixing Cybertron.
Soundwave’s always been the most dedicated, honor-bound Decepticon (hell, in IDW he became a good guy) so it’s interesting to see him waver in that regard for a change.
Despite soundwave seemingly trying to take control of things , we might see that shockwave will take over , we see he's somewhat intimidated by him , reasoning by allowing him to do such things because he is needed , but we all know to what extents shockwave will go to fulfill his duties
The biggest problem is that everyone sees the definition of Honor as a one narrow definition or ethics, the truth however is that each culture, ethnicity, and religion has their own set of morals and ethics which ties into their own set code of Honor
Nice vid Fun fact, I was writing in my fanfic ANB (transformers Arc) for soundwave's character Arc ANB soundwave isn't just loyal to Megatron, he's loyal to all of the Decepticons, not just Megatron, he's the reason why they don't go on with their squabbling, without him, the Decepticons would commit civil war on each other, he also admire life, his 1st time seeing a forest on Earth made him awe in a sight, when shockwave came with him, he showed soundwave that spending time here is completely illogical, because he doesn't find a use of what soundwave was doing, so he blasts the forest with soundwave watching & on pure emotion, he tells shockwave to stop, this ultimately made soundwave crack, & now officially hated shockwave, he grew suspicious of his idea & vision, so soundwave went into shockwave's lab to see his plans, but when he found out that shockwave's ultimate plan all along was to erase the universe & rebuild it where only logic exists, Soundwave was horrified, so he went to tell Megatron about this, not because of his loyalty towards him, but it's just that shockwave went too far, shockwave trapped soundwave & manipulated Megatron giving him false information, Megatron stubbornly agreed because soundwave was a little too nice, Megatron destroyed soundwave's Minicons because they're defending their father figure, and soundwave himself was shoved away from the nemesis, landing in an Ocean, falling slowly to the depts below, with no one alongside him now, soundwave began to tear up, of seeing Megatron's true colors, back in Cybertron, at the Golden age, soundwave only joined the Decepticons because of Megatron's words once, he was naive, he also joined them to Keep the Decepticons in check so that they won't cause civil war on each other, but without him, Starscream is free to betray Megatron as much as he likes & Shockwave is still out there, plotting his 100% logic made universe, Saddened about seeing Megatron's true colors, in his very optics, he gave up, waiting to join the well of sparks, until bumblebee founded him, he was wondering on how soundwave is in the ocean, on curiosity, he took soundwave to base & told ratchet to fix him up, though ratchet planted a failsafe just in case something went wrong & he doesn't trust Soundwave yet, once soundwave awakened out of the Ocean, he realized he was in the Autobot base & tries to rush back to the nemesis just to tell Megatron & the other Decepticons what really happened, bumblebee stopped him & tells what's going on with him, so soundwave explained everything to the Autobots about why he joined the Decepticons, all about shockwave's true motives, everything what he's been through, Optimus prime realizes that Soundwave is like him, both first saw Megatron as a friend once, but were horrified of his true colors, so Optimus tells soundwave to join the Autobots, to get Megatron see what he's doing & to stop shockwave, Soundwave agrees on both of the things Optimus said, the only Autobots who didn't trust Soundwave at first is Ratchet, he thinks he could be as bad as Megatron, but later on, Ratchet would grew a soft spot for soundwave, Speaking of Soundwave & the Decepticons, he saved their lives from the brink of death, showing that he's still loyal to them, as an Autobot or a Decepticon, Optimus didn't mind it though Very later on, Soundwave told Optimus prime & the other Autobots that he's gonna fight off both Megatron & Starscream, Bumblebee thinks it's crazy, but soundwave tells him that he's planning something, to put an end to shockwave once and for all, so he did, it's Soundwave Vs Megatron Vs Starscream, when Megatron blasts starscream for the finishing bow on him, Soundwave Shielded Starscream from the attack, Megatron wondered why he did that, Soundwave told him this "Megatron, I swore by my spark I would never betray you, & I refuse to break that oath, I only joined the Autobots solely because shockwave is a bigger threat than you think, he manipulated you, I wasn't the traitor, he is, he lied to you so that you & Starscream would commit Decepticon civil war, at first, I thought you would lead us to a Brighter future for Cybertron, but after seeing this stubborness of you, I was wrong, then I saw how Optimus prime treated his men, with respect & care, & I realized what that he's Cybertron's true future, unlike you, please, Megatron, Starscream, join forces with the Autobots or else Shockwave will destroy this universe to make one purely by his logic, please sir, Do it for me, commit operation, Salvation" Soundwave send his own words to the other Decepticons, shockwave seeing this as a threat, he destroys soundwave, on his final words after he's done "Soundwave, superior, shockwave, Most inferior" Soundwave was gone, both Megatron & Starscream realized that neither of them are good leaders of the Decepticons, so even at death, they honor soundwave as their new leader, & to avenge him, they joined forces with the Autobots to stop shockwave before he destroys the universe
I love how complex Soundwave has become in the skybound comics. I believe he will become more corrupt and cruel until the end. Hopefully he will fix Ravage soon.
I just want to mention that DWJ is also the artist (penciller) of the first 6 issues. If nothing else to remind people that he's also a very impressive artist
I always saw the Decepticons as very similar to Soviet Bolshevism, as mostly the oppressed and impoverished working class which suffered under the ineffectual, stagnate, and hypocritical state of pre-war Cypertron. Megatron was a strong, charismatic enough leader who despised the system and, at least in his own way, genuinely wanted to tear the system down to remake it better. The cult of personality which Megatron built around himself, still orbits an ideal of a strong, quasi-egalitarian goal of a system which stands as a more pragmatic stance against the unrealistic, ideologs of the Autobots.

Yeah, i stopped my order for these comics. Yes, the decepticons are supposed to be thuggish antagonists, but their actions in this comic were simply not just beyond to the pale, but beyond reason where they would be able to function as an army. I could forgive the ridiculousness of cybetronians being so weak that a granade lancher from some american hillbilly could just kill them and the other moments of cringe of these new comics, but the slaughtering of the characterization of some of my favorite bots, turning them into parodies of themselves was too much.

I feel like what these Decepticons represent is what happens when honour has no compassion. It's not decayed, it's just without warmth.
The Autobots don't overtly value honour as much as the Decepticons, and yet its their compassion that shines through again and again; sometimes, in spite of what honour might demand. By contrast, the Decepticons being honourable doesn't make them good, since they don't have kindness backing that up.
Amazing analysis of the great Wave. I feel his loyalty to the Deceptivon cause rather than Megatron was refreshing. However, what is the point of being loyal and honorable if the people around you are either cruel or backstabbers?
And honestly, it's almost sad how a bit of hypocrite he is about honor, when he himself allowed the mutalition of Skyward and the lie, the kidnapping of Spike so the human is tortured, allowing Shockwave to torture the Autobots. It's quite downfall of how war is twisting those once individuals into war machines.
He’s been loyal to the Decepticon cause exclusively since Marvel UK comics in the 80-90s. Then again in IDW1 run for a decade. “The last true Decepticon”, “The perfect Decepticon”, “The Decepticon with a heart of gold” are all his titles.
To me, it’s unfortunate that animation mediums keep on making him loyal to Megatron, thus making it a more known and utterly boring portrayal of an amazing character.
I have always loved Soundwave and him getting this big arc makes me so happy. This comic is amazing. Both sides have basically nothing and are forced to compromise their honor and beliefs if it means doing what they think is best or right. Time will only tell if there is a braking point.

DWJ is really tapping into that TFTM energy, where Soundwave is a loyal soldier to Megatron one moment (the Decepticon retreat from Autobot City) then in the next he's only out for himself (standing by as Starscream chucks Megs out the ship, taking a stab at leadership).
I think that sequence in issue 6 with Soundwave and Optimus will produce something, someday - maybe even in this arc with Shockwave, who knows. Seems like they're seeding something, but I could be wrong. Anyway, great video!
Definitely thinking they’re gonna do something with Soundwave, Thundercracker, and Shockwave. There’s a split that’s going to happen for sure.
Except he probably wasn't really out for himself when Megs got thrown out. There were like a dozen decepticons who supported Starscream all around him, and while he's strong, he wouldn't be able to overpower them all, and get killed.
@@The_Christian_Kirbothere is also a deleted scene that showed where if Soundwave had gotten leadership, he planned to turn around and go grab Megatron
In my opinion, the reasoning behind the Decepticons being as they were, is deeper than people have given credit for. In "The Five Faces of Darkness" you had the laborers that would become the Autobots and the military hardware that would become the Decepticons. They were created by the Quintessons to serve them. Though they were eventually driven off planet and for a long while there was peace, the military hardware couldn't break away from their programming. Despite it being an 80's cartoon meant to sell toys, that I think makes them kinda tragic in a way.

I'd really love a video about Skybound Thundercracker. I haven't read the Skybound comics and have learned everything I know about it from you, but if Skybound Thundercracker is in any sort of way similar to his usual self, I'd love for my 3rd favorite Transformer to get a video to himself.
From the way issue #10 went, I’m anticipating he will have a big moment soon. Want to wait for that before I cover him 💙

If Shockwave had actually thrown Ravage into an incinerator I have no doubt in my mind that he himself would be found in pieces shortly after.
*"You kicked my Ravage"* proves that Soundwave , even though he doesn't express himself much, *most definetly* keeps grudges.
I think that Thundercracker is a nice addition to this new iteration in the transformers universe since historically he’s always been sympathetic towards humanity.
As hard as it is to imagine a soundwave that completely switches sides I think that is the long-term goal. Perhaps he'll get really close and then Megatron will returns and he decides against it. It seems likely that Megatron is going to come back and fill the power vacuum in the Decepticons. But it seems like that itself seems like it could create like a splinter faction within itself.
I am very happy with the way Soundwave is being shown in the Skybound comics. Some of his other iterations were shown to be capable of empathy and honor, yet he also consistently chooses to do and say nothing about the less honorable actions of Megatron and other Decepticons. I love that this part of him is finally getting explored!
Soundwave does what needs to be done for the sake of the mission, even if he finds it distasteful

I know it may have been 10 days since, but, this Soundwave, from what I think, is the same one I've grown up with.
Again, remembering the movie, this is the Soundwave that refused to leave Megatron behind, but had to see him be voted off Astrotrain.
Him caring about Ravage can feel relatable, even specifically when you're a pet owner.
But to Soundwave, they're more than just tools, than a means to an end, these minicons are like his family, his brothers.
The way he was written, it's amazing, DWJ really did a good job even with other characters, like Onslaught talking to possibly still alive Brawn.

Its such a simple though to make a transformers series where they give the characters each they’re individual emotion and also add new ones to people that never got too much spotlight, it’s truly remarkable writing
IDW has done some pretty great work with these characters too. That being said, because there is so much content in that run, there's a lot to read through. I think that's why Skybound has been doing so well, as it's a way for people to jump on board without having to catch up on over a decades worth of reading.
@@DeltaTrion I Agree, the reason why shockwave is one of my favorite transformers now was it being influenced by the IDW comics the story on how he got his body then later on after his initial conquest to his brutality to his people it’s truly chilling and just good writing and it shows how they built from shockwaves initial character and cranked it up Soundwaves a nice one too but he’s always had more spotlight then shockwave since g1 I feel like, that one scene when he carry’s megatron after everyone else retreats is such a homage to the base of his character but now sky bound adds genuine human emotion ontop of his loyalty, gives him some nice depth, I love robots finding/expieriencing emotion it’s usually nice writing.

I'm not sure it's his honor actively decaying, as the skywarp incident happened pretty early on. I'd guess he lost honor a long time ago, increasingly cutting corners to get things done. As the comic progresses, I think what we're seeing his him finally hitting his limit- now that resources are low and everyone is getting desperate, it's now the ones he cares about that have become the victim of careless efficiency.
"you kicked my Ravage" is such an interesting line, because of how much of a loyalist Soundwave is, and maybe a foreshadowing of how his honor is bound to crack if not cracking the moment he set out to kill Starscream. Because the deception cause is all about equality, no division by casts, no people superior than others, all brothers ,all equals. In TF Prime Laserbeak is usually reffered to as "pet" or "drone" but only by Autobots, all Decepticons reffer to Laserbeak as "he/him" aknowledging him as an individual. Now granted, TF prime Decepticons are anything but loyalists, they're a bunch of corrupt fuckers bound by common enemies and Megatron's authority, but it's interesting to see how in this moment of sheer adrenaline and rage, Soundwave regresses to reffer to Ravage as "my Ravage". That's not brotherhood, that's property, and im confident in this interpretation since at the end, he does tell the other guy who's name scapes me rn and if i check yt is gonna reset my comment, BUT, he reffers to his life as property as well. Maybe Sounwave's trauma at having to sacrifice one of his men lead him to this coping mechanism, where he forces himself to look at the lives of his subordinates as property to be protected, since if he didn't, he wouldn't be able to forgive himself for what he's done, which is why he only remains silent when seeing things he admires the beauty off get destroyed in front of him. He ignores it because not doing so would get him to blame himself for his sins yet again

I’m really looking forward to the culmination of Soundwave’s arc in this series. It seems like he’s being set up to be a bystander to more and more atrocities as a bystander until his sense of honour finally cracks through. I think that potential for a truce between him and Optimus set up earlier might lead to Soundwave finally turning heel and giving the Autobots a chance to show him their side. I doubt he’s become an Autobot in the long run, but I could see him splitting from both factions to create a third party, one not really interested in fighting the other two, but wholly focused on fixing Cybertron.
Soundwave’s always been the most dedicated, honor-bound Decepticon (hell, in IDW he became a good guy) so it’s interesting to see him waver in that regard for a change.

It's good to know Daniel Warren Johnson didnt discard Thundercracker's questioning loyalty. Its what made him a breakout in IDW

not gonna lie, I always thought of Soundwave as an Autobot that never was. Even in other iterations he is the least impulsive compared to Starscream.
Despite soundwave seemingly trying to take control of things , we might see that shockwave will take over , we see he's somewhat intimidated by him , reasoning by allowing him to do such things because he is needed , but we all know to what extents shockwave will go to fulfill his duties

The biggest problem is that everyone sees the definition of Honor as a one narrow definition or ethics, the truth however is that each culture, ethnicity, and religion has their own set of morals and ethics which ties into their own set code of Honor

Fun fact, I was writing in my fanfic ANB (transformers Arc) for soundwave's character Arc
ANB soundwave isn't just loyal to Megatron, he's loyal to all of the Decepticons, not just Megatron, he's the reason why they don't go on with their squabbling, without him, the Decepticons would commit civil war on each other, he also admire life, his 1st time seeing a forest on Earth made him awe in a sight, when shockwave came with him, he showed soundwave that spending time here is completely illogical, because he doesn't find a use of what soundwave was doing, so he blasts the forest with soundwave watching & on pure emotion, he tells shockwave to stop, this ultimately made soundwave crack, & now officially hated shockwave, he grew suspicious of his idea & vision, so soundwave went into shockwave's lab to see his plans, but when he found out that shockwave's ultimate plan all along was to erase the universe & rebuild it where only logic exists, Soundwave was horrified, so he went to tell Megatron about this, not because of his loyalty towards him, but it's just that shockwave went too far, shockwave trapped soundwave & manipulated Megatron giving him false information, Megatron stubbornly agreed because soundwave was a little too nice, Megatron destroyed soundwave's Minicons because they're defending their father figure, and soundwave himself was shoved away from the nemesis, landing in an Ocean, falling slowly to the depts below, with no one alongside him now, soundwave began to tear up, of seeing Megatron's true colors, back in Cybertron, at the Golden age, soundwave only joined the Decepticons because of Megatron's words once, he was naive, he also joined them to Keep the Decepticons in check so that they won't cause civil war on each other, but without him, Starscream is free to betray Megatron as much as he likes & Shockwave is still out there, plotting his 100% logic made universe, Saddened about seeing Megatron's true colors, in his very optics, he gave up, waiting to join the well of sparks, until bumblebee founded him, he was wondering on how soundwave is in the ocean, on curiosity, he took soundwave to base & told ratchet to fix him up, though ratchet planted a failsafe just in case something went wrong & he doesn't trust Soundwave yet, once soundwave awakened out of the Ocean, he realized he was in the Autobot base & tries to rush back to the nemesis just to tell Megatron & the other Decepticons what really happened, bumblebee stopped him & tells what's going on with him, so soundwave explained everything to the Autobots about why he joined the Decepticons, all about shockwave's true motives, everything what he's been through, Optimus prime realizes that Soundwave is like him, both first saw Megatron as a friend once, but were horrified of his true colors, so Optimus tells soundwave to join the Autobots, to get Megatron see what he's doing & to stop shockwave, Soundwave agrees on both of the things Optimus said, the only Autobots who didn't trust Soundwave at first is Ratchet, he thinks he could be as bad as Megatron, but later on, Ratchet would grew a soft spot for soundwave, Speaking of Soundwave & the Decepticons, he saved their lives from the brink of death, showing that he's still loyal to them, as an Autobot or a Decepticon, Optimus didn't mind it though
Very later on, Soundwave told Optimus prime & the other Autobots that he's gonna fight off both Megatron & Starscream, Bumblebee thinks it's crazy, but soundwave tells him that he's planning something, to put an end to shockwave once and for all, so he did, it's Soundwave Vs Megatron Vs Starscream, when Megatron blasts starscream for the finishing bow on him, Soundwave Shielded Starscream from the attack, Megatron wondered why he did that, Soundwave told him this "Megatron, I swore by my spark I would never betray you, & I refuse to break that oath, I only joined the Autobots solely because shockwave is a bigger threat than you think, he manipulated you, I wasn't the traitor, he is, he lied to you so that you & Starscream would commit Decepticon civil war, at first, I thought you would lead us to a Brighter future for Cybertron, but after seeing this stubborness of you, I was wrong, then I saw how Optimus prime treated his men, with respect & care, & I realized what that he's Cybertron's true future, unlike you, please, Megatron, Starscream, join forces with the Autobots or else Shockwave will destroy this universe to make one purely by his logic, please sir, Do it for me, commit operation, Salvation" Soundwave send his own words to the other Decepticons, shockwave seeing this as a threat, he destroys soundwave, on his final words after he's done "Soundwave, superior, shockwave, Most inferior" Soundwave was gone, both Megatron & Starscream realized that neither of them are good leaders of the Decepticons, so even at death, they honor soundwave as their new leader, & to avenge him, they joined forces with the Autobots to stop shockwave before he destroys the universe

I just want to mention that DWJ is also the artist (penciller) of the first 6 issues. If nothing else to remind people that he's also a very impressive artist
I always saw the Decepticons as very similar to Soviet Bolshevism, as mostly the oppressed and impoverished working class which suffered under the ineffectual, stagnate, and hypocritical state of pre-war Cypertron. Megatron was a strong, charismatic enough leader who despised the system and, at least in his own way, genuinely wanted to tear the system down to remake it better. The cult of personality which Megatron built around himself, still orbits an ideal of a strong, quasi-egalitarian goal of a system which stands as a more pragmatic stance against the unrealistic, ideologs of the Autobots.

Yeah, i stopped my order for these comics. Yes, the decepticons are supposed to be thuggish antagonists, but their actions in this comic were simply not just beyond to the pale, but beyond reason where they would be able to function as an army. I could forgive the ridiculousness of cybetronians being so weak that a granade lancher from some american hillbilly could just kill them and the other moments of cringe of these new comics, but the slaughtering of the characterization of some of my favorite bots, turning them into parodies of themselves was too much.
The Weapons from the soldiers barely scratched Skywarp and no one died to human weaponry Plus what characterization did they slaughter?
