How to Install Ultima Harley Davidson Evo Motor Dyna FXD Ignition Upgrade Kit

  • Installing a new Ultima ignition in your evo motor Harley? I step you through the whole process. Ultima has an awesome ignition kit to upgrade or replace your original ignition system. It is very similar to the old Crane Hi-4 ignition system as well.
    I'm installing this on my 1998 Harley Davidson FXDL Dyna Low Rider. The steps are basically the same for any evo motor Harley, though the location of the connectors, ignition box, ignition coil, etc are different. I think if you watch this, you'll be able to figure it out easily on any other evo model.
    This is the Ultima 53-660 Single Fire ignition kit.
    Hit me up in the comments with any questions!

      I am trying to determine if my Dyna 200i module is faulty. Bike craps out like crazy and fuel and coil test good. The specks say the red led light should flash once when key it turned on to verify system operation, and then blink off and on when running. My module red led light will not turn on when ignition is turned on or when cranking it over. The tech at Dyna tek said it may not be necessary for the red led light to turn on for module to be good. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

    • @OctaneElectrons
      @OctaneElectrons  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@savnbest4last249 Very common for ignition module failures. I've had a Dynatek and a CompuFire ignition module fail in the past. Bike will start to run really poorly, and have a very noticeable ignition miss, if it doesn't completely die. As far as I know, if the red LED is not flashing, it is not firing correctly, or at all. It's possibly but unlikely the LED burned out. This is very similar to what happened on a 96 Evo electra glide I had when the ignition pickup in the nosecone was failing. I would go ahead and replace the ignition, it will likely solve your problem.

    I added one to my 1995 FLHR 2012 it is still going strong after 20,000 miles only thing bad is the 2 led lights have went out , But it is still working , each Bike has difference on how to do it . I cut mine off 16 long and used the wires from my bike , I did cut the white wire Coil and the Purple VOSE under the fuel tank the ignition wire was to short to reach past the tank , I used Solder and shrink tape on my wires, the ends of the white and purple going back to the Module I just folded over and used shrink tape to keep them free from grounding out . from the red and black wire I ran new wires to the coil , the green I hooked to the green the 2 from the coil I removed I folded and used shrink tape and zip tied to the harness under the tank everything is still in place if i ever chose to go back to stock. And that is not going to happen

    Getting ready to install this on a stripped down / chopped Evo XL. Could you explain here how to set and fine tune the timing?

    • @OctaneElectrons
      @OctaneElectrons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bike will run pretty much anywhere in the adjustment range of the ignition. To start, I set it dead center. The service manual will say to check static timing with a timing light through the timing plug on the left/flywheel side of the motor, just under the front cylinder. In practice this is ridiculous. Even with a clear plastic timing window plug, you can't see anything. Without it, you will blow oil everywhere out the hole. I gave up on that. I time them by ear and feel. Get it running in the center of the adjustment range, then go ride the bike. Advance the timing for best performance, listen for pinging when under load, then back off/retard the ignition a bit. If the motor is hard to start or kicks back, you are too advanced, retard it a bit more. Doesn't take long to dial it in.

    Hey, first of all, really well done vid! I have one question, I got a 1995 fxds and I’m using an electronic speedo with integrated tach from Daytona digital. It uses this three pin triangle connenector. I would guess for the tach. Do you know if there is any possibility to use the connector? Do you have a circuit plan of what you did?
    I am really clueless 😅
    Sorry my English is not the best.

    • @OctaneElectrons
      @OctaneElectrons  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tim. The triangle 3-pin connector is the timing pickup output to the ignition box. They may have used this same connector on their tachometer, but you can't plug the timing pickup directly into it. You still need to run the timing pickup into the ignition box. There should be a wire on the bike's harness that provides the tachometer signal I would guess. What is the model of speedo/tach you're using? I'll look at it and see if I can tell you how to hook it up.

    I've just installed an Ultima ignition, I have spark but the bike won't start. I don't have a voes and per the manual I thought sw1 had to be off?

    • @OctaneElectrons
      @OctaneElectrons  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was using a stock VOES switch. You want to leave SW1 OFF for normal VOES operation. Per their instructions:
      SW1 - OFF , using Normal VOES switch
      (USING VOES) - Allows timing to reach full advance by 1500 rpm under light engine load conditions,
      improving throttle response and gas mileage when the VOES is present. Wide open throttle follows selected
      pre-set curve. (high vacuum curves)
      No matter what, this switch setting would not affect your bike starting. The VOES switch is only affect by a big vacuum change. You definitely have some other issue causing the no start problem.

    • @OctaneElectrons
      @OctaneElectrons  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cameronnoonan8546 haha ya that would do it. Yes you would want to leave SW1 OFF. You only turn it ON to use the VOES wire as a timing retard trigger, meaning the Purple wire becomes an input for a switch to retard the timing map. If you don't have nitrous or turbo, there is no need for this functionality. Leave the SW1 OFF and if you're not using a VOES switch, the purple wire will never be triggered to change the timing anyways.

If you disconnected the cpu when you installed the new ignition you need to connect the cps for the computer to fire the injectors. The cps tells the computer when to inject fuel in the cylinder. There are ignitions with external modules that will do this, they plug in where the old module was. This ignition doesn’t support the injectors. If yours does, look to the cps for the issue.
