Lethal Weapon [1987] was a game changer for the Buddy, Buddy genre . Busting with Elliot Gould and Robert Blake created the early 1970s vibe with similar aspects that later became noticable in Running Scared and then Shane Black's script. Black stated many years later that he chucked the script of LW into the trash not thinking for one moment the script would become Warner Bros. biggest hit that year. Black must've thought it was extremely bad, but with some extreme polishing in the script department, Black delivered a slightly above average action/thriller. Leonard Nimoy was heavily tipped to direct the original LW, but bailed out after taking a second glance at the script and having to direct extensive action sequences. For me, Lethal Weapon has formidable set up and a decently delivered conclusion. The balance of two Buddy, Buddy cops systematically trying to breakdown a bunch of disgruntled mercenaries still has the desired effect on my cinema senses. When I saw LW at the cinema in 1987 it certainly made you feel like you watched an 80s action classic.
Lethal Weapon would have been a perfect trilogy, if they had ended it there, though in retrospect Weapon IV plays better these days. Willing to give the fifth film a chance if Gibson is directing it.

There were some articles about it the other week both pro and con (the con had nothing to do with the actual film... surprise, surprise). Maybe the powers that be are looking to see how well the new Beverly Hills Cop does first.
