Stuff like this is the reason why watching Cinemassacre videos feels like visiting an old friend.
+Dave Bladegun TRUE DAT BRO.. feels great to watch his channel.. makes me feel like i m still in 2006.. watchin him fr d frst time
I think James is at his absolute best here, his passion and enthusiasm for the topic really comes across.
Definitely
+morelenmir absolutely, he's more of a movie nerd than a gaming nerd, though we've helped him find more love for video games over the past 10 years.
+morelenmir well said
+morelenmir agreed good sir
+morelenmir Yep. You could tell he genuinely loves this stuff. Wish he made more videos like this.
dude you are a true OG. you have a video store in your basement.
ikr damn thats just.....cool^
His like a big fan of horror movies.
With a state of the art database
The video store closest to my house growing up, was in the family's basement...sooo, not that much of a surprise.
I think he's aware of that
Almost 7 years have passed and this is still my favourite video and I watch it to ease anxiety and to listen you talk about what you love. Thank you for everything!
same here man, same here.
I remember going to the video store Friday nights with my dad. We’d order Chinese food or pizza and walk over to the video store and get 5 movies for $5 for the weekend. If I was sick and had to stay home from school for an extended period we’d get videos for me to watch during the week. What a great reminder and trip down memory lane James!

Thank you! I just wanted to see the laserdisc! Lol
Thanks
He's the only person I know to have laserdiscs
I dont know what it is about this video but i swear i can smell those VHS tapes and it feels awesome.
Ikr
dude...I AM WITH YOU. i feel the same way..and ohh does it smell wonderful.
A video arcade smells even better. I really miss that burning tube smell.
James Rolfe: What do you want to watch?
James Rolfe's family: Ummmmmmmmm...
Horror probably
James rolfe: what do you want to watch?
James rolfe's family: *yes*
@Tomversal James said fans send him movies, how?what's hi address to send him movies
Dude, there's a 90's video store in your basement. You have won at life.
👏
nunya baznus I just converted a bunch of 30 year old home videos from VHS to DVD using a dedicated conversion PC and the quality looked pretty much the same as it did originally... *shrug*
+nunya baznus lol 2tb? i have filled 6tb and never came close to having every movie i wanted to have.
+paradoxdesigns He just needs an old computer at the desk to catalog the collection.
+paradoxdesigns converting from VHS to DVD wont upgrade the quality. You would phsyically have to do that yourself with each frame of the film.
Nobody...and I mean NOBODY, takes you back to the past like James Rolfe. He is the Nostalgia Guru.
I miss the block buster/Hollywood video days....even dvd rentals. I love streaming but it's just not the same
SeriousBeats They kept Blockbuster in a few cities. I do miss actually going out to browse and pick up a movie. Even the bad movies were tolerable with Blockbuster popcorn, and a giant bag of candy.
Now there's RedBox. 🤔
Xtravision was that for us.
I also miss Suncoast. I loved how the store was always dimly lit and kinda dark on the inside, with movies playing on mounted TVs like James said. And Suncoast always had the best selection of DVDs anime, foreign films, cult classics, horror, and especially television seasons. They just seemed to have stuff you couldn't get at Blockbuster and I discovered so many great films at Suncoast like Fight Club, Memento, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Eraserhead, etc. The atmosphere inside the store and the aesthetic was just perfect for browsing movies.
This was when we had internet, but only dial up and it was really limited. There wasn't a lot of word of mouth online yet, if you got recommend a movie it was in person or just seeing a cool cover on the shelf.
The employees there tho were amazing! They would always recommend films if you asked and we're super knowledgeable. They got to know me and what genres I like (SciFi, Horror, 80s/90s action, Psychological thrillers/Mindfucks, Comedies and Anime) and always had great recommendations about new films as well as lesser known and cult classics stuff.
R.I.P. in peace Suncoast at Ingram Park Mall
SeriousBeats
Yes I agree 100 %. You should always have a physical copy of the music and movies you watch and listen to. You know.
10:00 his reaction killed me, you know you have a HUGE collection when you don't know atleast 1 piece of collection to even exist .
same
i collect dvds and when i dug up dvds to put them into alphabetical order i forgot i even had angry birds toons
Again, THIS is why I still prefer buying the physical copies instead of just downloading everything. Sure it takes up space, but viewing the collection is always so satisfying. It's part of what separates the download-hoarders from true collectors.
StillersRock I thought I was the only one
StillersRock same
StillersRock its like vinyl it just sounds better
Same
A-fucking-men!!
"On this shelf, we have the horror section. Next to that, we have the horror section...if you look on that bottom shelf, you'll find the horror section". *walks across room* "now we will look at my favorite section of the video room.....this is the horror section".
You're a part of gaming history! Today one professor at our university showed us your "doublevision" avgn episode, it was one of the funniest things I studied so far :D
+callmeRazoR
Cool.
+callmeRazoR That's incredable! I'm sure James would be proud that avgn has some sort of academic value lol
What did this professor teach?
+Brandon Martinez fun
+callmeRazoR a professor at my university showed us his Pong avgn episode in one of our lectures like 2 years ago!
This is a great example of a man that discovered his passion early in life and pursued it throughout the years.
yep
I think the gumball machine really ties the room together
Definitely a part of the video store experience. I always got a gumball out of the machine whenever I went to Family Video with my dad.
Tom servo!
@@MattGodzilla2000 Tom servo is nice and all, but this comment was about a gumball machine
You figure Netflix would have a large public domain section , but nope
Netflix sucks.
Netflix + VHS recorder = not so good quality copy
kingkold Netflix's catalog is terrible anyways
Yes! I truly don't get the appeal with it either!
That would show Netflix cares, but they don't give a shit, they have your money and you ain't going anywhere, so why would they do something like a public domain section, which would be awesome, great idea
this makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
This is one of my life goals: to have a room like this, either as a gaming library or movie/TV library.
I want mine to be something kinda like his too
Mines both. I have more movies than games well physical movies at least but it's sorta all over the place. Nothing close to this but I try to make it better each day.
That's my goal
Me too. I never have DVDs before, but I have like, 4 of them, and I always have this kind of wish.
I have around 850 VHS at this point (and like 700 DVDs) I started collecting after seeing Cinemassacre 200 when I was 12. Love the set up James!
Started my retro game collection a few years ago at age 12
Found some nice stuff in mint condition
That's great! Good luck with your collection!
@@generickitty50 I too started collecting games when I was 12. I am 37 now & had over 7,000 games in my collection. Some REALLY rare stuff. Today I don't own a single video game, I donated the entire collection to charity.
@@HermannTheGreat okay hermie 👍
"I don't want to see history disappearing"
YOU are responsible for introducing many people to older things they would normally not be introduced to. AVGN was the biggest thing that got me to go back to the retro systems from the PS2 era. Throughout this entire video I was jotting down movie titles that seemed interesting based on the cover.
Maybe you make a video (Or maybe even an app) or something called the "Digital video store" where you just scroll through your shelves and all the covers so people can pick out ones they want to track down.
@singularon1 PS2 (in Japan) is now 20 years old. How's that for making you feel old?
He got me into Godzilla older godzilla
I see so many people from throwing old games and consoles in the trash,It really hurts me seeing all that stuff that other person (like me)would want to have in their collection being thrown away
This is such an amazing video, you essentially captured the nostalgia that everyone who grew up in the 80's and 90's feel for video stores
GamingTaylor
Having a childhood in the early 2000's, I remember renting a movie from a local store twice a month. Games were less frequent, but none the less, I do remember and love the rental stores.
I've seen this video five times all the way through. Time well spent.
Its terrifically entertaining isn't it .
I can listen to James talk for hours and never get bored.
what do you mean "can"? I háve. "hours" isn't even the correct term for it :P days, weeks.
Holy shit I would be like a kid in a candy store I would live in there for months
Aidan Hogan
You would have a lot to watch, that's for sure.
I'm thinking of starting a LaserDisc collection. I picked up a copy of Warriors of Virtue at a thrift store for seven bucks, but I don't have a player yet.
A grown man in a video store

@@troyschulz2318
How's that collection going?
29:57- love it anytime he says "Bubba Ho-Tep."
I remember there was a video store we used to go to in Forest Hills until I was 7 (then we moved away), that was the only place I ever saw that organized their collection in this way. Instead of tapes up front, there were these large, glossy, white cardboard squares that would have the VHS box flattened out and taped on (I forget if it was only the front, or if the back of the card also showed the back of the tape) and they were sorted out much the same way you'd see vinyl records at a music store. You'd bring the card up to the counter, and the guy would into the back and give you the tape in exchange for the card. If the card wasn't up front, someone rented it out. It was really unique and saved space up front, but I've never ever seen any other store like it. Anyone else ever see that?
Also, I hope BluRays and 4K BluRays never die because physical media is the best.
Your passion for movies really comes out in this video. It's nice to see people like you out there keeping the video store and movie nostalgia alive. Thank you for making videos like this . I truly appreciate it.
I hope James knows how legitimately funny he is when he's not really trying
@Julian Borges am i a clown? Do i amuse you?
@Julian BorgesHe's a funny guy!
James is a remarkably intelligent and well spoken dude
Me being in that room would be like Squidward in the patty vault
But they'll go straight to your thighs! ..and THEN you'll blow up! D:
Me too
Spongebob: SQUIDWARD YOU CANT EAT ALL THOSE PATTIES ALL AT ONE TIME!. SQUIDWARD!.
Squidward: Whats gonna happen am I gonna blowup?.
Spongebob: No worse it'll go right to your thighs.
Squidward: My thighs?.
Spongebob: And then you'll blow-up.
Arthur Garcia thats my favorite episode of spongebob
+Marco Demasi yes I admit it SpongeBob I love krabby patties!
I wouldn't mind living in that basement.
Micah Buzan yup, just put a tv in there
I'd kill to just see that basement.
Yeah put a TV massive gaming system a fridge full of beer and room full of records and gramophones in that bitch and it be complete. Man
14:22 James said, "And he put me in a head-lock it was amazing-anyway.." so casually. 😂😂😂

"Lol what a dinosaur"
Not exactly as fun
God I hope not
Jesus Christ no
jffry890 Pretty soon I’ll just transfer over my library from my dome to yours by thought.
Given how people are now they won't own any movies. It will all be subscriptions.
How much is the Cinemassacre video rental card? What are the late fees?
$50 plus shipping for DVDs and VHS tapes, $2 late fee per day.
+Yumoto “GG” Hakone م
.
ح
There's a rental store called the videotheque from Facets and you don't have to worry about late fees, because you just pay a subscription service. You can call them and look up their stuff online to find out more.
@ Yumoto: seriously?
The late fee is them taking a shit on your face
Napoleon Dynamite was the last VHS that I rented.
Good last vhs to rent.
jeff peake really had to throw in your opinion?
Hey jeff peake. Shut up.
It was in VHS ? This shows my age . I was born in 1998
I wish I knew what mine was.
I don't think I've ever watched a video that made me feel like a kid again meeting a new friend and him showing me his cool stuff.
Your enthusiasm is infectious, James.
The thing that pissed me off the most about renting VHS: I'm a big Horror fan and would essentially pick Horror movies based on the box art. How many times I got tricked by shitty movies with good artwork. Waste of a rental, but it was all in good fun.
Cant judge a movie by its cover
Sword & Sorcery did the same thing
I think this is my favorite thing about James, I love his passion and how he spreads knowledge of things of the past. But this room. I'm not the best with words so it's hard to describe but when I watch him in this room. I feel like a piece of my past isin't lost. I was born in 1997 so my memories of video stores are a lot less than most but they are still there and I can't go back to a blockbuster. There are some video stores still but it's not the same like it was 12 years ago. But seeing this room James put so much effort into putting together, seeing his massive collection of games and consoles. It's like all this stuff is still there and hes taking care of it.
You mentioned never seeing any laserdisc in video stores. That was interesting to me because I used to work in a video store back in 2000+ and when we did inventory one year, we had to go into the back to comb through clamshell cases. We discovered a box in the back and it had a couple laserdiscs. That was probably the strangest discovery from my time at the video store. I never got answers as to what we had them for. I can't even remember the titles now but they were popular movies that we already had in the store on VHS. I'd assumed they were maybe demos sent by the studio or something but who knows.
So many memories. I'm having a nostalgia overload! I really miss the good old days. Downloading and streaming can suck it!
I was banned from the local Blockbuster because as a child I accidentally knocked over a shelf and sent the merchandise flying. Joke's on them, I still exist and they don't (except in Alaska).
Nadiya You don’t exist in Alaska?
I want to move to Alaska now!
The Alaska stores are gone. Only one store left in entire US
Just one left now, and it's in Bend, Oregon.
@@TheLordUrban hahaha
Damn! with your game and movie collection, you'll never get bored at your house.
This makes me glad that I'm old enough to remember both the hometown video rental stores and places like Blockbuster.
I used to rent video games and movies all the time. I miss it.
This also reminds me that I need to check out the local video rental store. I just moved to South Carolina and there is an open video rental store here.
There are still a few video stores out there one of them is called the videotheque from Facets and they have thousands upon thousands of titles and if you don't live near them they will ship you the DVDs. There is no late fees, because you pay a monthly subscription service instead.
Dweebenheim R.I.P Blockbuster, I remember going there to rent Bee Movie on DVD
I just loved the smell of walking into a rental store. I think it was the combined smell of cardboard boxes and wooden shelves. It was a Pavlovian response for finding great movie experiences. I miss it.
There's still a rental store near my home, until a few years ago, it had the classic 80s look, tons of VHS with wooden shelves, it was freaking great, loved to go hang in there and rent stuff x)
The nostalgia hit me hardest when he shows off the Mom & Pop shop case; "5 Movies, 5 Nights, 5 Dollars!" Nothing like picking a few random movies out at the video store in hopes of finding one good one.
VHS Tapes will still be a Treasure in our lives, no matter what right now.
"Do you have that one with that guy who was in that movie that was out last year?"
Yes
Ooooooh, Navy Seals.
Ahh, "Blow Me Sandwich 2: Double The Meat." Yes, we do have that
"Oh you mean Blow me a sandwich right this way sir."
It's called The Matrix Phyllis!
You've actually inspired me to collect VHS and DVD, with Laserdisc as a side
How is your movie collection coming 2 years later after your comment?
Find betamax. I only own a few of each just for novelty.

On you to take my word for it
DVD actually means : Digital VERSATILE Disc, most of people confuse it with digital VIDEO disc, although the second makes most sense is not the actual definition....
+El Capo Ninja
For some reason I remember the Versatile part being added in roughly 2001. Before that I always heard it as Digital Video Disc. My guess it's sort of like CD when it came out in 1987 when it was pretty much purely music, then they realized they could do more things with it.
apparently, there were some issues with "digital video disc" already being used.
It also depends on what you use it for. Although I don't know many dvd music albums, in the hayday of dvd, tons of games were mainly released on dvd formats. In light of that, it makes more sense to call it versatile, rather than video.
I feel like you should get Quentin Tarantino to see your movie collection. I'm sure he'd appreciate it since he's also a movie nerd.
Yes, he would spend hours there just looking at all the movies he watched at a young age. That would be fun.
He'd probably be disappointed he doesn't have a foot section though.
@@DasAntiNaziBroetchen :D true
That would be awesome to watch.
Could you imagine Tarantino being a cameo on AVGN
I can’t believe this video is 6 years old!? Please give us tour updates in 2023!!!
God I love those videos. As a collector myself I always find cinemassacre more interesting when it focuses on movies instead of videogames. Thanks for this, to have a collection like this is a dream of mine
What a wonderful throw back this is. Would love to have a vhs collection
+Jack Rose Reviews there's still a video store that sells vhs and old games in my town
I feel lucky that I kept nearly all of my old VHS tapes! There's nothing like an old-school video.
I love to put on James talking in the background
I love this stuff. The stories, the reminiscing - all the work you put into this. So great to watch.
I remember my grandma used to own her own local video store and when I would stay over I'd sneak in and look at the porn covers lol
I was born in 1990, but I'm glad to have experienced the life of VHS in my childhood, before video stores died out (especially video games). I'm so grateful for that ^-^. And those NES rental cases! :O Oooh, I nearly lost it! So good :D
EDIT: I agree with you at the end. I love the simplicity and convenience of Netflix, but shit, I wish they would stop removing movies! Maybe you're right... maybe the video stores did die out to soon...hmm.
You and Mr both! I remember, my grandpa used to have a giant VHS movie collection, it was amazing, we also had an N64 along with alot great Nintendo games, ahhhh, beautiful times!
I was born in 2002 i have never bought a DVD only VHS my friends laugh at me when they see that i only have VHS but i laugh at them when their Netflix account expires while i can still watch movies. :)
Soon, Netflix will be just originals series and movies
Even being born in 1995 I still had that pleasure!
This is now one of my favorite Cinemassacre videos! Thanks James!
I had both a Hollywood Video & Blockbuster extremely close to where I live. I even remember the Blockbuster was torn down to make room for a new Blockbuster. The good old days of renting VHS tapes, PS1 games, N64 games & video game consoles.

One of my favorite videos up here. The nostalgia is palpable. Thanks James!
I like physical media because I can keep my stuff for a long time I really don’t want to lose my stuff
Same here. I literally don't do digital anything. I've got my stacks of VHS, DVD, vinyl, CD, and cassette and I'm never letting them go!
There is just something special about being able to pickup and hold your movie/game/music in a physical form.
@@kuraiwolf4047 It sure is, just the feel of it and looking at it...:) I love how they look all lined up on my shelves too.
I have bad news for you about VHS then lol.....Your disc's should be fine though.
I prefer physical media immensely, but I'm always paranoid that the stuff I have will stop working eventually, so I still use digital when I can
I wish I had a 90s video store like this in my basement.
I still buy physical media CD'S, DVD'S, BLU-RAY'S and Video Games. If your buying digital media make sure you have enough memory/hard drive space. Movies and video games take most memory/hard drive space but music doesn't take as much. I do Love MP3's and DLC for video games but man it takes memory/ hard drive space for all my DLC and music. Thanks for the tour James! It took me back to my teen years! The 90's were awesome! :)
*Hey, Mike or James (if you see this comment), I have a suggestion, it would be really nice if you guys did a video showing more of your game collection, talking about it and maybe giving some tips to future collectors.*
This is really inspiring, as a wannabe collector myself, it's amazing to watch huge collections full of story.
I've always been into the physical media.
And I don't think it will totally die, because people know there are people collecting stuff.
And if you really think about, they wouldn't keep releasing so many physical stuff, but they still do.
Of course it's not at it's peak as it used to be, but it will always have a following.
I enjoy buying CDs, since I actually use CD players to listen to music (I'm not always in the PC, so if I'm doing something else, it's just great).
And also, it gives us a great bond with something, we have stories about how we got something, it's pretty nice.
I'm still going to be a collector, mainly a video game collector, and on a lesser extent of other stuff too.
I will be starting this year (with my own money, not by asking for a family member or anything).
The rental store we used to go to had cashiers that smoked like a train inside but the joy of looking at the vhs boxes is still in my mind.
Physical media is much better, sad everyone paying for nothing anymore
What's wrong with digital media?
I won't buy digital downloads of games anymore, I just bought a Retro Bit Trio and am buying physical copies of all the NES, Sega Genesis and SNES games I grew up on.
I have over 1200 movies and still buying. I never download
@@jdonner3272 I feel ya.
I just had to haul a huge container of hundreds of my CDs out of my Grandma's basement after she died..
Some of that shit you probably won't find online (easily, at least).
Tell me about it, I wouldn't be able to stand not seeing and touching my VHS and DVD collection, my shelves of paperbacks and hardcovers with all of the dog-eared pages, and my vinyl and CDs and cassettes:) Only way I'll ever go digital is if everything I have is lost and I can't replace any of it.

I'm 19, but still love the products of the past and discover hidden gems and anomalies. Like how they treated the superheroes in the 40's, what was a silent movie like, Sci-Fi adventures and stuff, and I don't know, I'm just obsessed with them. I just watched Dog Day Afternoon yesterday...... :D
Everytime James talks about his intrests,I genuinely believe that he truly loves what he does and collects.
Stay cool,James.
I remember seeing Laser Discs at Suncoast Video. Never saw anyone buying them, of course, but they usually had Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, and other big movies.
I used to buy mine at Saturday Matinee.
+cheez_munky My Dad had a collection of them, he was a big audio buff in the 1970s if that's the right term. The only L.D. player we had when I was a kid was a Panasonic if I remember right, and it flipped the disc (or should I say the laser?) over automatically. Star Wars on it was in pretty good video quality for the Pre-1997 versions, (Widescreen too!) we also watched BTTF on it a lot and got many other movies... "A Kid In King Arthur's Court" was one of them, Laserdiscs were still being made that late.
+Austin Lucas Laser Disc hung around... It wax odd.
Laser Discs were popular in Japan. So were Minidiscs. It's sad that Minidiscs never caught on in that time before mp3 players. They were smaller than CD's, held the same amount of data and they never skipped.
+cheez_munky I've always leaned towards the reasoning being that they didn't look cool enough, like 90's CD-rom enclosures to try and stop scratches, but smaller. Really it's Sony's strange love of creating proprietary software/hardware. They keep doing it, and most times it ends badly for them.
:O Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde........... *jumps out window*. Can't see that title without thinking of the NES game lol.
Thanks for sharing, James. That movie collection is so huge and feels just like walking into a video store. It is truly beautiful for being a personal collection. I was grateful for being able to learn more about movies I didn't hear of previously.
I like you tubers like you and nostaliga critic to give us 2000(s) kids a blast to the past maybe talking about the 70s 80s and 90s it's very interesting and feels like a cool experience

This might just be the most satisfying, soothing video on TH-cam. It’s the only video I’ve clicked the Like button for. Your collection is a thing of beauty James, and your thoughts on physical media and content preservation are dead-on. I hope I can join you and the guys in a Rental Review one day.
Some shops had a photocopy of the cover, (front n back) then attach them to the wall in solid plastic sleeves. All the films would face outwards but store so small it used to have these dotted about each with 200 or so flicks. Wow : blast from the past!

That's why I only buy stuff I've seen so I don't fall into the collector's rabbithole unless I find something for outrageously cheap
@@MasikoY Same here, I can ONLY have the stuff I want to watch over and over and over again:) I believe I've managed to watch everything each a hundred times! I would never buy anything to own that I didn't WANT, only time I get that stuff is when it's gifted and I happened to mention one time that I saw it on TV...
I can still remember renting VHS tapes at Blockbuster...I miss going to Blockbuster to rent a movie or game, it used to be such a fun thing to do.
+Astor Reinhardt Watching Gladiators kill each other used to be a fun thing to do as well. Times change unfortunately :(
Genuinly the coolest guy ever, ive watched you for years james i love watching back through your library of videos please keep posting forever 🤞
12:36, they did make a few LD Players that had a rotating laser, but usually that was restricted to higher end versions of Pioneer’s LaserKaraoke Units
I absolutely love that your collection is so big you were able to pull a DVD out and not even know what it was.
"He put me in a headlock, it was amazing." lol
This video is great. It's nostalgic even for me, a 90's kid who grew up in the fall of video rental stores. And I love hearing James talking about any shit.
But the ending is kinda sad. I hope we can fix this problem in the future.
i do NOT and will NOT support digital and/or streaming anything EVER.
James, you are the literal coolest human alive. I have my own little game and movie libraries all because of you
