- Terrible, first ever TH-cam video of a relatively simple job.
The Steering Position Sensor is in the Clock Spring unit, and the whole unit has to be replaced if the sensor goes bad. The replacement costs about $200.
Symptom is ABS engages brakes while turning at low speeds.
Here are the steps:
1. Disconnect the Battery! Take no chances with airbags.
2. Remove 3 screws from underside of the steering column cowling. One is a Torx #20, the other two are Philips head. They're hard to see. I used my phone camera like a mirror.
3. Remove central padded portion of the steering wheel. This contains the airbag. It is held on with 3 wire-clips. You access the clips from the dashboard side of the wheel with a screwdriver. There is limited room and it's a little tricky. Again, a phone or mirror is helpful.
4. Remove the central steering wheel bolt, disconnect all wires, remove steering wheel.
5. Disconnect the turn-signal unit from the Clock Spring housing. It's just a simple clip on the top. Squeeze the clip and lift the unit up. It can just remain there after it's removed.
6. Remove Clock Spring unit. Three Torx #20 screws - 2 on top, and 1 in front. (Caution: This part comes apart easily and has a good coating of white lithium grease. It's hard to get back together if you're planning to use it again, but you're probably replacing it, so just be aware that it can be messy. There are a number of wires plugged into the back of this unit, and you need to
7. Remove the pedal adjustment button. Just one little clip in the top. Careful not to break the little clip.
8. Install the new Clock Spring unit. Click the pedal adjust button to the Clock Spring housing. Set the housing in place and connect the plugs to the back. Slide the turn signal unit into its slot. Tighten the screws. [Note: The new unit should have screws already started. Leave those in, and just tighten them once you get the unit aligned.]
9. Reinstall the steering wheel. Align the splines using the flat spot as an alignment key, and press on, ensuring that the wires for the airbag are routed through the upper-central opening. Plug wires from steering wheel into Cloock Spring unit. Install and tighten main bolt. I used a drop of lock-tight.
10. Install airbag unit. ** Be sure to touch the steering wheel bolt to discharge any static electricity before handling airbag unit! ** Make sure all connections are secure, and plug in color coded wires to airbag, then press airbag unit into place, making sure all three clips engage.
11. Reinstall cowl with it's 3 screws.
12. Reconnect the battery.
That's it. Should take about an hour.

2008 Grand Caravan. Bad clockspring (clicking) and steering angle sensor (SAS). ESP/BA and traction control lit on dash. Replaced clock spring-SAS unit and was able to calibrate SAS and clear codes without scan tool. There is a self SAS calibration procedure from Chrysler. There is another TH-cam video on it called "Steering Angle Reset-Self adjustment procedure Tech T". Here is what I did.
1. Start Engine
2. Turn wheel right until locks full right
3. Turn wheel left until locks full left
4. Turn wheel right unitil wheels are centered
5. Turn engine off
6. Turn ignition to on position but do not start
7. Turn off and then start
My ESP/BA and traction control was still lit. I repeated procedure again. It was still lit. I was on my way to autozone to get a scan when I pulled out of driveway and drove down street all lights cleared. Everything is fine now.

Great video! The airbag latches are tricky, be patient. The comment in the thread about resetting the warning lights was awesome! Saved a trip to dealership for the reset.

This is a very well done and thorough video. Thanks for all the useful tips and information. We just picked up a 2008 with the abs and esp lights on, and my code scanner said the steering position sensor was faulty. After seeing the part is around the steering column I was intimidated. Not now. I'll order this part tonight thanks to you.
If you're not having physical symptoms, I'd probably hesitate to go through this job. Suggest you try resetting the warning lights, as described in the Pinned Comment, before tearing into it. -- JK

Just complete this job. I was nervous, but this video made it easy. Hardest part was disconnecting the airbag from the back, but a cell phone camera really gave me a good view. Next hardest was the three screws holding the plastic cover on. They were hard to line up during assembly. Awesome video. Thanks
For others: Leave the screws in the new part (or put them in), otherwise aligning and starting them is almost impossible.
Did you have to calibrate the steering angle sensor?
First, be sure to read the full Description above, including Michael Suda's comment about resetting the Steering Angle Sensor after replacing the parts, but I also want to add a note about ABS and Traction Control lights on the dash. We've owned this vehicle for 5 or 6 years now, and every now and then it will present with 4 warning lights in the middle of the dash, all dealing with ABS and Traction Control. OBD says it's an ABS sensor on a wheel, but we've never had any drivability issues, so we've ignored the lights, and every time, they've gone away within a few days. It usually happens after a wash, a good rain, or a lot of dirt road driving. If you're seeing the lights, but not feeling any problems, give it a few days and see what develops. Taking it to the dealer would result in $$$ charges just for the diagnosis, then more $$$ for them to replace a wheel sensor "and while we're at it, we really should replace both sides, cause if this one went out, the other's probably ready to go... And you might want to just do all four... Better safe than sorry..." I'm not saying ignore it forever, but if it's not giving you problems, give it time to clear itself.
A short or small screwdriver is good for the 3 hard wire clips of airbag, not a regular length one. AND not thick screwdriver with removable bits, but regular thin stem screwdriver.

Had to post another THANK YOU!!! Mine had the silly Torx screw as well. I only went as far as changing the pedal height adjustment switch. Whothout your tips I would still be under the dash or broke something trying to get it loose.
I’ve been trying to get the air bag clips out for 2 hours. I got the bottom one I cannot get the other ones. . The back holes are getting all torn up , that’s about it. I tried turning the wheel in all different directions. I don’t know the trick to get under them and pop them off. This is very frustrating.

Then the hard part's all done. Reassembly is a cakewalk. Do be extra-cautious about static electricity around the airbag though. Those things scare me.
Oh, and don't forget to leave the screws in the new part. They don't get in the way putting it in, and they're a bear to line up once it's in place, so they're started that way on purpose. If it doesn't come that way, put them in yourself first.

THANK YOU!! I have to replace the pedal height switch in an 09 and would have broken something by the time I realized the idiots mixed up the screws. Wonder how intentional this was??
Dealer wants almost $1000 to do this. Napa lists the part at about $300. The possibility of getting killed by my airbag gives me some pause. I'll have to re-watch and read the comments.
First thing: Disconnect the battery!!!
The clockspring is a lifetime recall on my 1996 Plymouth Voyager. I think I'm on my 3rd one now. Perhaps they made it so bad that it is good (for me), but they still appear to fail. In my case, the ribbon cable isn't strain-relieved enough at the ends so the wires bend and break.
I just found this video. My 2008 Town & Country has both the traction warning light and the airbag warning light on, but the problem is that it only appears after driving about a mile and then it won’t allow me to go more than 30 mph. When I stop the car moves forward at 10 mph even though I don’t have my foot on the accelerator. Idles really bad too… when I turn the engine off and back on right away, the computer has reset and I can drive it normally for another mile at least, to get where I’m going. Is that related to what you did in this video?
Sorry, I didn't see your question. Probably too late, but no, I wouldn't think it's a related problem. That sounds more like something in the computer itself. My first thought would be to check connections under the hood and under the dash. If you got your issue solved, please reply to this comment to let us know what you found.

I would start with the fuse box under the hood on the driver's side. There should be a diagram in your owner's manual. Then I'd double-check the wires and plugs in the steering column. Be sure to unhook the negative side of the battery before messing with anything around the steering wheel. You don't want the airbag blowing up in your face. Pulling the steering wheel is not a simple job. I'd only do it if I was pretty sure that I had a solution available under there.
Hello. I have a problem . The airbag light bulb is lit. I checked the tester shows that the problem is with the left side of the sensors. (lost communication w/ left side satellite acceleration sensor 1).

Sorry trngw, I can't recall. I think I usually just look parts up on O'Reilly and Auto Zone, then compare prices with online sources and balance price, convenience and time. Since this was something I needed done right away, I probably bought it at O'Reilly. They're the closest.
BTW, it was over 110* when I did this job in the driveway. My phone shut down due to heat a couple of times, otherwise the video might have been a bit better. Thanks.
How did you get the steering wheel off am in the middle of process and can't get steering wheel off
Sorry, I didn't see your question. I assume you have found a solution by now. Mine was super easy. The bolt was actually only finger-tight, and the wheel just wiggled off, once the bolt was out.
Did you get the steering wheel off? I tried every thing for two days with no result. Any clue?
Jeff could you please share how you came to the conclusion the sensor was bad. Currently we have 4 lights on the dash that won't go off, all abs stuff. Had the codes read and the guy at the parts store said it was abs sensor. So I looked up ABS sensor and saw that there is one on each wheel. Further research on forums make me think that may not be the issue but this unit instead. Your thoughts appreciated.
In my case, the sensor went out all at once, and was dramatic and dangerous. At low speeds, like approaching a stop sign or driving in a parking lot, the ABS would suddenly engage, presenting a horrible noise and jerking the wheel to the side. If you're not having drivability issues, I'd suspect one of the wheel sensors. The dealership can probably give you a more accurate code reading, but they'll charge you for it. I had an ABS sensor go out on a Blazer several years ago. It would cause the ABS system to engage at low speeds, much like the steering sensor issue, but it would only do it when applying breaks. I ended up just pulling the fuse for the ABS system until we started getting into snow season, and I replaced the wheel sensor.
@Darren Get an OBDII reader that can read ABS codes, it will tell you exactly what sensor it is. If its the steering angle or if it's an ABS sensor, it'll point you to the right wheel and sensor. It'll be cheaper than going through all ABS sensors just to find out the problem was the SAS ;) and you'll be able to use it for all kinds of faults and issues in the future. Really good to have!
I wonder why you didn't show HOW did you take off the Airbag system!! it was the only one i needed to watch here!! Good and perfect job, though.
I did describe it pretty thoroughly, but didn't think to do the video until I was halfway through the project, so no video of getting it off. Sorry.
What size is the steering wheel bolt?

I don't recall. Someone online like Rock Auto, or maybe just down at the local O'Reilly's or Advance.
