Great video! I settled back then for my 3650 (DDR2) with 8.12 too. But mainly because this was the only driver, where Battlefield 2 had no glitchy shadows.
For that i'd need to find my copy of Vista, but it's very likely I.. lost it/destroyed it with fire. That and i'm still hunting for a 4670 AGP. One day i'll be able to compare!!

A different question: I have that exact card, and it works with DVI and VGA, but HDMI only shows the BIOS and Windows 7 start screen, then goes blank and the monitor displays the message "Out of Range". Any idea why everything works except HDMI? Cheers.
I have a 3850 paired with a Socket 939 4200+, and I've only used the 13.4 drivers. I was a bit disappointed at the framerate of Half-Life 2 when I set anti aliasing to 2x, and had been contemplating buying a faster CPU for the system, but I can see that trying a different driver could improve things.
For an AGP 3850? Not something I have tried yet, but your/my best bet is likely www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=ATI+Radeon+HD+3850+AGP+ although I don't think windows 10 supports AGP any more? Don't know!
sorry m8, i can't find that 8.12 agp driver even on vogons and that russian site that they always link, can you please upoload them somewhere? thanks in advance!
@@RetroKomodo well,that driver refuses to install on sapphire 3650 agp,so basically i only found some old who knows what drivers on old HIS website and from about 11.4 to 12.4 hotfix agp drivers on driver indentifier website.catch is that with that drivers card is recognized as 2600xt and performance in only game that i care about (s.t.a.l.k.e.r. shoc) is garbage 😅
@@RetroKomodo maybe i'm wrong but i think that simply later agp cards need special drivers a.k.a. 'hotfix agp'.i do remember that being a thing back in the day also.

Especially with TNT 2 and Geforce 1/2/3/4 it is the very same (if not worse) with some exceptions like Quake 3. So with TNT and Geforce up to the 4th Generation it is better to stay with Windows 9x
It's just really strange how all the optimisations work isn't it? Combinations of different hardware, chipsets, drivers etc all make it a bit of a minefield..
This video is quite the eye opener. It's like AMD doesn't care about the performance of its older cards and is perhaps doing this to encourage people to upgrade their cards. Not the way to treat your customers, if true.
@@Vanessinha91Pucca You could tell Windows not to update hardware drivers and install the best performing ones, but then you leave security exploit holes open I suppose.. Tricky..

It would be intresting to see which one is the best for windows vista x64, as i suppose, it was the cutting edge OS for the HD 3850 and 4670.

Not tried in Windows 7 i'm afraid, but i'm assuming it'll be something about the driver you tried that is causing problems?
Would you please consider benchmarking your Radeon HD 3850's (AGP + PCIE) and 4670's (AGP + PCIE) on Linux?
I can look into that - sure. Do modern Linux distros support AGP still? I have no idea.. This may take some investigation!

@@RetroKomodo It's Half-Life 2 Source, so it's has the same sound options as the version you can get on Steam (no EAX option).

where do you get yoru drivers from?
Mostly guru3d? Some I had on my drives already from back in the day, and some though a link on the Vogons website I think

for me i found that the newer drivers yeilded better results with my old pentium extreme edition system

Not just older, my RX 580 XT and now RX 5700 XT suffer the same issue with drivers
