    I had a PCI-E 3870 with that very same cooler 😊
    85-87 degrees were regular temps during gamplay. It lasted for 7+ years until it died.

      I knew it was a good idea! I'll have to see if I can track down some more compatible coolers at some point :)

    For anyone interested in doing the same thing I think I have identified a website with stock of this cooler! xewl.co.uk/products/2090585000

    I detected the same temps with the stock cooler too, been using it that way for years. I recently decided to dig up another cooler I had, a Deepcool V90, which was fastened to a FX5500 and tried it. It's deffinitely quieter and max temp is below 70.

      Oooh the v90 looks nice! Can't find any to buy, but at this stage I doubt I need more coolers.. especially after th-cam.com/video/XZtnSfmzD10/w-d-xo.html

      Also, maybe checkout th-cam.com/video/-u1GCr2uf4Y/w-d-xo.html - it's very silly and probably wasn't a good idea but worked rather well!

      @@RetroKomodo Oh hey again. Came across your channel again while searching something for the 3850. It still works well with the new cooler, around 65 deg. at load. But I got my hands on a cheap second hand passive cooler, Accelero S3, gonna try if it's better. And the V90 would go to a cheaply found HD 2600 XT without cooler, which I'm waiting to arrive from the US.
      Also your videos are pretty entertaining and informative.
      Best regards.

      @@RetroKomodo Hey, me again. Sorry if I bother you. Just here to share something. I too found an L2 Plus cooler but strapped it to a x1950 pro as it was very noisy. And just before I had the chance to try the Accelero S3, my 3850 suddenly artifacted and is on the edge of failing completely. Will try to save it. If it doesn't survive, I hope I can reflash a HIS 3850 that I knowingly bought with a wrong bios.
      Cheers and merry Christmas.

    You probably should look into adding a heat sink to the bridge chip so it doesn't overheat a lot of these cards die because of that chip because it runs really hot also I'm pretty sure there's a solvent that can remove the thermal glue on the ram heat sinks just make sure it's a solvent that doesn't react with metal in a bad way

    • @RetroKomodo
      @RetroKomodo  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been thinking about heatsinks for the Rialto chips on my cards that have them.. I guess a ram heat sink on them would be best, but for proper contact I guess i'd need to remove the surrounding pad. I have pretty decent airflow over them when I have them in so should be ok, and hey - if this 3850 packs up I have a backup 3850 ;)

    Nice video! Just got one myself, and this was very interesting :) Dont think i will replace the cooler as its more of a collectors item for me. But if it was in my main xp rig, i definitely would consider it :).

      @RetroKomodo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ace! Well as long as you keep it handy it's simple enough to put the original cooler back on. Oh - are you planning on using it on an Athlon XP system? If so you might want to investigate vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=1825&menustate=0 for a patch which should avoid SSE instruction problem restarts ;) needs installing safe mode

    The Arctic Accelero S1 should be able to passively cool a 3850, but good luck find one these days for a decent price. I had the S2 on a 3650, actually replaced a stock passive cooler that I didn't think was doing a good enough job.

      I found a few cheapish graphics cards on eBay with an S1 attached, but by then had more than enough coolers so didn't get one :(
