Practice standing up. By that, I don't mean practice getting up off the couch. I mean practice playing guitar while standing. I wish I had realized this earlier. When it came time to play my first shows, I realized I had no idea how different it would feel to play while standing, how long or short my strap needed to be, or even how to use a strap. There was also a fatigue factor I hadn't gotten used to. My shoulders would get tired. So, practice while standing.
I saw a Steve Vai interview where he talked about practicing in front of a mirror, to practice your moves so as to not look boring or disengaged while playing My band director from high school would say you perform how you practice. And then he’d also say practice at home; rehearsal is not your practice time
We all learned the embarrassing way. Don't worry I practice while walking people look at me like a lunatic. I don't care I'm 41 years old. I go on a walk and I walk with my acoustic strap to my chest, learning new cords and learning how to sing and play at the same time, which is almost impossible for me, but I'm getting better at it. I get my Fitness in, and I learn new chords Whoever says, that's an adult that has no time to learn a guitar is making up excuses if they work out, they could always strap a guitar to their trust It's like the AAhow far you're willing to go for sobriety Man playing the guitar teachers me way more than just playing the guitar. It's all metaphor to my life.
@@aaronkatz2024 if you were in my neighborhood I’d see you out the window a couple times and think you’re crazy, and then one day I’d ask to join you Coming up with a name for that band might be kinda fun lol
Last month I got my niece her first electric guitar. I sent her a Fender Strat and a 2 minute video on how to use the knobs and switches, etc. This video of yours feels like an upgrade. So, good for you, cool Uncle.
Play the chord progression through once and hit the loop on the second time round as you start again. Hitting it and starting to play almost invariably leads to a really obvious jump every time it cycles.
Good advice. I also find it helpful to stomp your foot to the beat (next to the pedal) for a few beats before, so you get it in time, and then just move your foot over and stomp the pedal on the beat you want. Trying to time a single stomp just right can sometimes be awkward and end up slightly off beat.
i use loops pedals to loop a 6 string bass & guitars. this is insanly fun! only thing i dont know is how to record with looper with ableton or DAWS. i mean i do know but for some weird reason it just gives me a lot of white noise or hum after i loop only once. its really weird 💀
Probably my favorite single pedal that I ever owned was a Boss RC-3. I paired it with a Boss FS-6 switch pedal to make it simpler to use. I sold it a few years ago and I still miss it. I literally recorded entire album's worth of material on it. I'd load drum parts onto it from my PC and then go nuts...adding bass, more guitar parts and sometimes even keyboard parts. They're an incredible tool for practicing as well.
Tuneyards (aka Merrill Garbus) uses two Boss loopers with the external foot switches to build songs live, I believe one is for her vocal and the other is for whatever instruments she’s playing. It’s mind blowing how she does it.
I've had a loop pedal for years.. but could never get the hang of it so its been in a cupboard for years.. this video has me trying to remember where I've put it so I can give it another bash.. maybe even inspire me to get more involved with my playing again.. cheers bruh!
Damn, even got the same pedal I do! Say what you want about most Boss pedals, but the Loop Station is extremely versatile. The only downside for me right now is that my main amp is on the fritz, so I'm stuck with my Spark Mini. Major problem: Analog loop pedal + digital amp = distorted guitar sound.
@@Badfish988I find looping pedals really bring out timing gone south. It’s not always timing but just groove in general I guess. There are some people that can make it work but it usually sounds very noticeable when it repeats, a stutter.
Good Uncle Sam way I got my 4 yr nephew ! I plan the guitar whenever I see him and he only lives two blocks away but I'm giving him my first Yamaha base. You're a good uncle my friend you remind me of me and you got an awesome guitar I just saw that blue fender that is beautiful finally got my first American Strat myself American performer so nice.😅
Another trick, especially if you are using heavy delay drone type sounds. Start with an empty loop that way you don't get weird cut offs from the sound still going when you stop.
So I’ve been asking for this for years…maybe you have the influence to get pedal fabricator to consider it. A basic loop pedal, with a basic LED “screen” to show the length of the loop, plus two EDIT knobs, One on the left of the display to shorten or tweak the start of the loop and the other on the right to shorten or tweak the ”end” of the loop. That simple. No drum Machines or click tracks, just a user friendly loop pedal that allows the user to easily “close the loop.” Seems so obvious, but no one makes one. Please help.
I have the same looper and it drove me nuts that you have to record two loops right away. That is, until I found out that you can change that by holding the button while you plug in power. I don't remember what to do from there, but google will remember.
This is a great video man. Lots of hours spent getting lost in playing to a loop. Practice is very important before you try to do this live though. Either gonna be epic or the most embarrassing thing ever. Ive had both. (Basically binged Dovydas during lockdown, and decided 1hr of looper practice made me an EXPERT! 🤦) Either way fun as hell.
Seems like looping pedals are useful only for genres that have short repeating chord progressions and no refrain. How many times do you go through the progression? More than one? How do you get the quantization right at the end of the loop so the beat isn't thrown off? I bet these are questions your niece would want to ask.
If you want to do more complicated stuff it's probably easier and more fun to start a band. But if that's not an option there are loopers or other devices that accommodate multiple parts.
Great vid. I bought an RC-1 years ago. Older version on the one shown and never really figured it out, so It’s been in its box for years. After this vid, inspired me to pull her out of moth balls.
When stopping and stopping the looper between loops, am I supposed to do it on beat? I feel like there’s a weird gap in between my loops when they start/end
Whats up guys. Needing some help choosing a guitar rn. I'm buying a new guitar and mainly looking at the Ibanez TOD10(Premium line) and j. Custom RG but not sure which too choose. The hardware and materials are quite similar but i prefer the pickups on the TOD10. Should I bump up to the j. Custom and get new pickups or stick with the TOD10?
OK Sam OK so now you're just showing off lol. Joking I think by next year I should be at that level might put the guitar down for many years but I'm progressing super fast for 41-year-old. I'm so impressed myself not to be narcissistic man being a special ed studentand the way I'm playing these days. Wow.
