I'm 63 years old, have lived all over the country, and still have (PROUDLY) hanging on the wall my first guitar, a Japanese-made Ventura 335-type guitar. My parents bought it for me when I was 12 (1972), and I hated it, cause all my friends had strats and teles and solid body guitars. Today I love that we've both survived the journey, so far✌

My first guitar actually ended up at a local music store and my wife bought for me for Christmas. It was a crappy Harmony I purchased through Fingerhut. In high school I had given it to a friend after I purchased a new guitar and then never saw it again. Then over 20 years later I see it in the music sites Facebook and told my wife about it and unwrapped it in Christmas that year. It was a cool experience.

      @Douglas_I ปีที่แล้ว +8

Start on whatever guitar you want! That being said, I would pick acoustic to start on because electric is easier to play. It's the same as learning to drive with a manual transmission. If you can drive a manual, you can drive an automatic. If you learn to drive an automatic and at some point need to drive a manual, it's going to be so difficult! Acoustic vs electric isn't quite that extreme but I would always say to start on acoustic. That's just my opinion though. Whatever you do, don't give up!

Growing up I always used to fall back on rap music r&b.. my uncle who passed away many years ago always pushed me to listen to older rock, Ozzy Pink Floyd Zeppelin. And I never got into it. After his passing I started to listen to as much rock as possible old-new. Then finally, just year ago, I picked up a guitar and have been learning everyday. Wish I would have listened to my uncle way back then when he was here. Learning something related with guitars is a part of my everyday routine. If it wasn’t for my uncle I probably wouldn’t even of ever picked up a guitar.

That jam with your cousin at the end brought a tear to my eye and raised the hairs on my arms - as much for the overtones of family, a tribute to Tim and passing/repassing of the baton - as it was for the music itself.
I still have my first guitar - sat forgotten and unloved in a cupboard for a few decades. During the unfortunate circumstances of the past few years with lockdowns etc - I got it out, completely refurbished it and gave it a new paint job. Brings a smile to my face to look at it on the wall and compels me to pick it up.

Found out with that guitar, I am actually a left handed player. So turned the nut around and restrung it to match. One day it was stolen from me and about 2 weeks later, it turned up in the local pawn shop. Since there aren't a lot of no name guitars strung upside down in this town, the shop owner (reluctantly) allowed me to take it, free of charge (I did offer to pay at least something for it, for his troubles).

I found my first guitar in my parents closet a few years ago. It was a red strat copy that i bought myself when i was 13, think it was 1997. The neck was broken and pickups had rusted because it had been in a garage for many years but the white plastic details had aged beautifully creamy 😁 So i bought some Fender pickups, new electronics, a rosewood fretboard neck and fixed some details. Now it's my number one guitar 👍

What matters is the body and the exact guitar loool. Feels nostalgic when you get it. My first guitar is a $150 handmade lespaul. Fast forward everything with it sucks. Hardwares all tarnished and green, action is 5mm high, pots are all not working/scratchy and the only thing that works is the pickup. Change the hardware and machine heads to gotoh, replace the pickups with Duncans, Set it up then plays good and feels good again. Fortunately it is a bolt on les paul so i can change the neck if i want to.

I don’t regret two of them, but one was a lawsuit era 70s El Degas Les Paul, and I regretted losing that one. Thankfully, a few years later I found an almost identical one for a very good price, upgraded the pickups, and I’ve had it for about 25 years now. Sorry for your recent loss first and foremost, also you are just an absolute legend man! I watch your stuff all.the time, I don't learn a whole lot from you as a player as when I watch your stuff it just blows my mind, I was late to the party but love being a learner, and learning anything about guitars and gear I what I love doing!! All rhe best for the new year, and nope I do not own ky first guitar which I obvs regret, it was an older peavey acoustic and it was bloody stunning!

I still have my first bass. A Westone Thunder 1. For some reason I called him Eric back in the day and that is how I still refer to him. I retired him from live shows several years ago as he weighs a ton and I now have many and varied, lighter options but Eric was one of the best sounding basses I have ever owned. Third hand to me, bought off a guy who was in the college rock band, for £90 when I was 17 yrs old (I’m 54 next month)
I love that you got your first baby back, Tyler ❤️

Loved the jam with you both at the end!! Congrats on finding your first electric guitar Tyler & respect to Uncle's Tim and Jim!! Great guitars for you both.
My first electric guitar was a strat-likr Japanese St. George in almost the same yellow. I have been searching for one just like it but alas, have come up empty... the search continues.

So sorry for your loss, just want to say thanks for staying strong and continuing to inspire guitarists all around the world!
I still have my first guitar (obviously, I've only been playing for 4 years). It's a 2004 Affinity Strat that was trash picked, it has the big CBS style headstock (which I actually like) and the neck is unusually narrow. I'm left handed so we did a Jimi Hendrix on it and also swapped the pickups out for some cheap eBay Alnico-V ones. It is much better now and plays pretty good, it feels very sure footed and produces the same feeling as an old crummy car that you just can't get enough of now that you've fixed a major issue.

Much love from Romania and condolences for your loss.
As for Uncle Jim, people like him, who are disabled, and people who live with them and help with their everyday life, are some of the strongest people on the face of the earth.
I may be saying this cause I am disabled myself, and might be an exception to the aforementioned rule, but especially the people who care for us are superhumans.
Best regards from a multi instrumentalist living in Romania. :)

    Tyler,
Probably my favorite video of yours and I've seen most of them. Uncle Tim looks like he might have played some football in his life. I bet the top hat was good rehab for that zipper scar on his left knee. Infectious smile and whatever drink in his hand at the end is just a plain ole awesome pic. I hope you have that on a wall somewhere. I bet he was a fun Uncle. RIP-UNCLE TIM!

I got to learn on some amazing guitars that belonged to my father. Mainly 60's Strats & eventually he let me play his prized 50's D'Angelico. The 1st guitar I ever bought with my own money was a 1984 Gibson Explorer in Cardinal Red with 3 pickups(each w/ their own on/off switch) & a Kahler trem. The serial number ended in 666, so it was memorable. Cruising eBay one day, I saw it! I told my wife about it & wanted to buy it. So, the next day I went back to buy it & it had sold the night before. I was heartbroken. Glad that someone gets to realize that dream. Congrats, Tyler.

It is funny how something like this can affect you.
I am a bit older than your are and have been collecting for over 30 years.
I have 13 guitars in rotation on the wall atm and 7 of them are 94's.
What's most interesting is that my favorite S type ( Squier ) is a 94' Korean Squire that I re-built. ( yes the 80's Squiers are the valuable ones...)
Sanded, 5 coats of red mahogany stain and finished with 100% Tung oil, orange drop.. master volume and tone...and a 2010 set of Mexican ceramics.
It's the only guitar I have that everyone wants! And it's made of plywood!
    She is Dos Pesos.
12 years after I got her I bought another one on CL for $10, it was made the same week at the same plant as Dos Pesos.
Rebuilt, but left the finish, and she is soooo Spanky it's crazy... her name is Spanky.
There is just something about them. And my only named guitars...
Dunno man, there is just something about stepping back and reminiscing and you mentioning 94' brought back a lot of memories.
I am stoked to see that guitar in your future videos... idk why but I have a feeling this wont be the last time we see this guitar in your videos.
    I am happy for you.
Sorry your uncle passing was the catalyst but maybe there is more to the eyes and ears with this story.
Keep up the good work bud.

My first guitar was a Squier Strat I got from one of the original Rocksmith starter packs as a birthday gift from my sister and brother in law. It was colored with some kind of sunburst with a red pickguard. I learned everything I know now from that beautiful piece, and even performed with it several times throughout my teenage years. I played it from 2012-2016, and it ended up getting destroyed while I was in boot camp for the Navy after mom and her boyfriend had a nasty argument to where he ruined a lot of our stuff. When I came home, I was absolutely heartbroken. The neck was bowed, the body was in multiple pieces, some glued together, with the only things not ruined being the pickups. She kept it just in case I somehow knew how to make it good as new, but it was just too much and I couldn't afford repairs at the time. Mom threw it away, and we immediately went to guitar center down the street where we got a new Ibanez, which I named Ash. I'll never forget that Squier, as long as my memory's good and photos don't fade. RIP Ilana, and RIP Tim.
