I still can't get over you not knowing House of the Rising Sun, it's a classic! great song and chord sequence, fairly simple too. I see most people play Smoke on the Water wrong because of the key , or they use a pick ( Ritchie mostly uses two finger to pinch the two strings for the riff or pick and finger to pinch them ) he also frequently moves it around on the neck. The hard part is actually getting the rhythm right in the verse, it's mainly just Gm but then has that F on the 3rd beat of the last bar of each line for just one beat.

About House of rising sun: I accidentaly heard that song on some youtube top list, but it never was on the radio/tv/any random playlist, neither many people mention it unlike Smoke on the water, Smells like teen spirit or Nothing else matters. So no, it's not impossible to not-know, and that kind of reactions will just demotivate and stop him of will to hear it for the first time.

I do love how people who've never picked up a guitar say how easy everything is. I've just started only playing 2 months and atm everything feels hard.
Practice practice practice... don't stick with one band or genre, make sure to bounce around. And get a decent guitar, and amp. Having a shitty sounding instrument will discourage you. Best advice I got.
A little trick I learned to do when I felt like I wasn't getting any better. To remember how clueless you were day one, turn the guitar over, ala Hendrix, and play something. Ahhh....now I remember!!! I AM GETTING BETTER!!! 😁
Well, the hard truth is that every little step will feel difficult and only becomes easy with practice. That's the thing with playing guitar, there's a million steps you can take. Learning new techniques and gaining theoretical knowledge are leaps and practice the actual steps to get there.

Power chords ARE one of the easiest things to learn. Maybe not for somebody on their first day or even week, but it's definitely one of the first things many guitarists learn.
usually the power chords aren`t the difficult part to learn, it`s the right hand techniques. the strumming, the muting, picking patterns etc. just because a song uses power chords, doesn`t mean the song is easy to play which was the whole argument of watchmojo and they are completely wrong with that.
Marr is by far my favorite guitarist he shows that you don't need to play as fast as possible or shred like crazy. He keeps it simple, clean and melodic and for me that´s when music is the best.
Learning power chords was really simple for me personally to learned because I have long fingers. The problem was taking a month to figure out how to play power cords without having random strings ringing out
I had a friend in high school that may have actually followed this philosophy to the letter, could solo circles around anything in real time but could not be asked to play more than one note at a time.

House of the rising sun was the first song I ever learned to play by ear. And I did that after only a few months of playing. It is totally worth being on this list. There’s only one chord in there that’s not a day one chord.
A fun fact since you didn’t know the band The Animals, the bassist of said band (Chandler) was Jimi Hendrix’s manager. He got JH out of the US and got him to the UK, gave him the papers and since he was a friend with Eric Clapton he was the reason they met. Years later Chandler steals a whole bunch of JH money.

Also, it's wrong anyway. Blackmore doesn't play the first chord with the open G and D strings. He plays it with the A and D strings on the 5th fret and it sounds way better
Not sure if you’re being facetious about The Smiths, but Johnny Marr has some of the most beautiful arpeggios ever in rock music. It’s rare to have a pop/rock band have a guitarist that completely steals the show, but Johnny does. Definitely worth checking out some of their other stuff. The Headmaster Ritual is the open E arpeggiation anthem
Yeah that really pissed me off, Johnny Marr is so fucking talented. He didn't play the riff right. He didn't bother to learn the whole song either, the chorus is harder than the verse and main riff, I think. 99% learnt correctly my arse.
Johnny Marr is an extremely respected and successful guitarist with some of the most beautiful melodies written, he's very humble and all around just a great guy. None of his work that he did with the smiths should ever deserve to be called a "nothing song". Come on man.
Dude, I was with you until shitting on the Animals. They were one of the best BI bands of the 60’s, and the singer Eric Burden was an absolute beast. “We’ve gotta get out of this place”, “Don’t let me be misunderstood” are both great songs.
House of the rising sun was definitely a must know when I learned to play. There are a million versions of the song and the chord progression is helpful for getting used to changing chords once you can make them.

I have to disagree with the statement that "power chords AREN'T easy to learn" I found them incredibly easy when I was starting and actually inspired me to keep going in a way. The shape of a power chord is natural. The fingers want to go there. And, maintaining the distance between fingers when the fingers naturally sit in that position is easy as well. I was learning all kind of punk songs days after I learned what a power chord was. So, for that reason I kinda disagree.
I agree, I am a huge fan of complex chords, like the ones used in Bossa Nova (the brazilian equivalent to Jazz). But human hands seem like they were made to do power chords
I do agree with that to some degree, but that can also be because you both seem to have the natural talent to do so. For a lot of people who aren't that gifted, they may find power chords hard to do themselves. So I, myself, wouldn't say they are hard or easy, just that some people pick it up naturally and some don't. I picked up power chords fast myself, but I didn't find it too easy to begin with.
For some weird ass reason I actually cannot play power chords cleanly, for some reason I do not understand (and even though im a punk, punk rock fan), I have an easier time playing Bossa Nova chords than power chords. It may be because I can't rotate mi wrist very well, and Bossa chords just feel more natural in my weird wrist, but yeah, I have a hard time with them
As far as riffs go, Cocaine is one of the easiest I know. But, to play it correctly is a whole different thing. Same goes with many of the songs on this list. Playing them correctly isn’t easy, even wonder wall. Hardly anyone gets the right chords and strumming.
I have to disagree about power cords. For me, they were the easiest thing to learn and actually play well consistently. In fact, they are still about all I can play haha.
See that's my problem with most of these youtube guitarists. They talk about and amire a lot of guitarists who I don't care about and the ignore a Johnny Marr or Steve Cropper or Brian Setzer
It was one of my first, however it took a few steps because that strumming can be pretty tricky for a beginner (especially in 6/8). I had to start with just regular strums, then went to arpeggio picking and then finaly to the correct pattern
If AskMojo do include a version of _House of the Rising Sun,_ then why not plump for Dylan's take on his debut album, as it's the same chords but is strummed, not an arpeggio.
I mean, I have the same thought process. If I can't play a song right away it's not an easy song. At the very least it's mildly intermidiate, but not you've been playing for a month easy. This doesn't mean I play really well though, it just means the song is indeed harder than it would seem to others
to be completely honest about Power Chords, I learned them pretty quickly thanks to my years of playing Guitar Hero. You know how to combo Green and Yellow together for chords in that? basically the same premise, but the string you use the other finger on is below the one your first one is on. that’s basically how I learned it.

House of the Rising Sun is actually a lot harder than it looks especially the timing in between each note. Hilton Valentine chose to pick certain strings and took his hand off the fretboard in-between chords, which means the last note in each section is actually 'out of key'. I suppose the easy way to play it is like Tyler demonstrated but even that is still tricky for a total beginner. To play it like the original recording, you'd need a fair bit of practice to get it right and some professional guitarists can't even play it perfectly.
How most people play iron man intro: *bends the low E string behind the nut* How Tony plays it: *bends the 5th fret on the low E string* How Tyler plays it: *breaks the A string*

The arpeggio pattern is tough for beginners. It also has a lot of chords compared to, say, TNT. So I agree with this assessment. A lot of the complete noobs who learn HOTRS as their first song only can play the chords, and play them badly.
The majority of tab apps show Zombie is all open string chords, no bar chords, but when you introduced the bar chords to it it sounded so much better. I'm only playing since December lol I'm able to play along with tabs but can only remember three songs without looking at the tabs, and I cannot for the life of me play power chords whatsoever, the thumb method you did there though looks easier to manage than breaking my fingers in order to stretch them out 😅😅

The first song I attempted to learn on guitar was chop suey by SOAD. I learned the intro very quickly. Then gave up, After that, it was learning in the end by linkin park. Within the first week of playing I tuned my E string down to D and from there I just learned bar chords for a while except I used 3 fingers for them lol anyone else have a funny way of doing bar chords early on that was self taught?
The first song that I was “taught” was House of the Rising Sun (very good song imo). Then the beginning of Sweet Child Of Mine. I am very thankful that he taught me those songs first. It made me a better player for sure.

No one forgets their first; mine was Wonderful Tonight, followed by Stairway of course, then Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard, some Kinks tunes. I didn't have an electric at the time, it was a Spanish Classical something or another, this was pre-internet days, spent hours in guitar stores reading music books since that was the only way (aside from by-ear) to learn new tunes, those were fun times...

Power chords ARE one of the easiest things to learn. Maybe not for somebody on their first day or even week, but it's definitely one of the first things many guitarists learn.
They were a little hard for me to learn, but once you've mastered it, then they're easy
usually the power chords aren`t the difficult part to learn, it`s the right hand techniques. the strumming, the muting, picking patterns etc. just because a song uses power chords, doesn`t mean the song is easy to play which was the whole argument of watchmojo and they are completely wrong with that.
My problem was I was 15 and my hands weren't full grown yet. So it was a stretch for me.

Marr is by far my favorite guitarist he shows that you don't need to play as fast as possible or shred like crazy. He keeps it simple, clean and melodic and for me that´s when music is the best.

Learning power chords was really simple for me personally to learned because I have long fingers. The problem was taking a month to figure out how to play power cords without having random strings ringing out

A fun fact since you didn’t know the band The Animals, the bassist of said band (Chandler) was Jimi Hendrix’s manager. He got JH out of the US and got him to the UK, gave him the papers and since he was a friend with Eric Clapton he was the reason they met.
Years later Chandler steals a whole bunch of JH money.

Not sure if you’re being facetious about The Smiths, but Johnny Marr has some of the most beautiful arpeggios ever in rock music. It’s rare to have a pop/rock band have a guitarist that completely steals the show, but Johnny does. Definitely worth checking out some of their other stuff. The Headmaster Ritual is the open E arpeggiation anthem
Finally, another Johnny fan! His solo stuff is so awesome as well. And his son Nile is amazing too! Both extremely skilled guitarists and songwriters

Dude, I was with you until shitting on the Animals. They were one of the best BI bands of the 60’s, and the singer Eric Burden was an absolute beast. “We’ve gotta get out of this place”, “Don’t let me be misunderstood” are both great songs.

House of the rising sun was definitely a must know when I learned to play. There are a million versions of the song and the chord progression is helpful for getting used to changing chords once you can make them.

I have to disagree with the statement that "power chords AREN'T easy to learn"
I found them incredibly easy when I was starting and actually inspired me to keep going in a way. The shape of a power chord is natural. The fingers want to go there. And, maintaining the distance between fingers when the fingers naturally sit in that position is easy as well. I was learning all kind of punk songs days after I learned what a power chord was. So, for that reason I kinda disagree.
I agree, I am a huge fan of complex chords, like the ones used in Bossa Nova (the brazilian equivalent to Jazz). But human hands seem like they were made to do power chords
I do agree with that to some degree, but that can also be because you both seem to have the natural talent to do so. For a lot of people who aren't that gifted, they may find power chords hard to do themselves. So I, myself, wouldn't say they are hard or easy, just that some people pick it up naturally and some don't. I picked up power chords fast myself, but I didn't find it too easy to begin with.

For some weird ass reason I actually cannot play power chords cleanly, for some reason I do not understand (and even though im a punk, punk rock fan), I have an easier time playing Bossa Nova chords than power chords. It may be because I can't rotate mi wrist very well, and Bossa chords just feel more natural in my weird wrist, but yeah, I have a hard time with them

As far as riffs go, Cocaine is one of the easiest I know. But, to play it correctly is a whole different thing. Same goes with many of the songs on this list. Playing them correctly isn’t easy, even wonder wall. Hardly anyone gets the right chords and strumming.

It was one of my first, however it took a few steps because that strumming can be pretty tricky for a beginner (especially in 6/8). I had to start with just regular strums, then went to arpeggio picking and then finaly to the correct pattern

to be completely honest about Power Chords, I learned them pretty quickly thanks to my years of playing Guitar Hero. You know how to combo Green and Yellow together for chords in that? basically the same premise, but the string you use the other finger on is below the one your first one is on.

House of the Rising Sun is actually a lot harder than it looks especially the timing in between each note. Hilton Valentine chose to pick certain strings and took his hand off the fretboard in-between chords, which means the last note in each section is actually 'out of key'. I suppose the easy way to play it is like Tyler demonstrated but even that is still tricky for a total beginner. To play it like the original recording, you'd need a fair bit of practice to get it right and some professional guitarists can't even play it perfectly.

The majority of tab apps show Zombie is all open string chords, no bar chords, but when you introduced the bar chords to it it sounded so much better. I'm only playing since December lol I'm able to play along with tabs but can only remember three songs without looking at the tabs, and I cannot for the life of me play power chords whatsoever, the thumb method you did there though looks easier to manage than breaking my fingers in order to stretch them out 😅😅

I always knew and loved "The house of the rising sun". I think it is a song that is very easy for an experienced player, but definitely a hard one for a beginner.
Tyler said it was not easy because he played an F barre chord instead of the simpler open F shape which is used in the song. It's a very easy song.

He never implied that they’re “nothing” artists. Is just that he hasn’t heard those particular artists/songs probably because that’s not what he usually listens to. From what I’ve seen in his videos, he’s more into technique based guitar songs than on punk. And there are many people who like rock music and have never listened to The Smiths, the first time I did was on my rock n roll history in college class a couple years ago

The first song I attempted to learn on guitar was chop suey by SOAD. I learned the intro very quickly. Then gave up, After that, it was learning in the end by linkin park. Within the first week of playing I tuned my E string down to D and from there I just learned bar chords for a while except I used 3 fingers for them lol anyone else have a funny way of doing bar chords early on that was self taught?
The first song that I was “taught” was House of the Rising Sun (very good song imo). Then the beginning of Sweet Child Of Mine. I am very thankful that he taught me those songs first. It made me a better player for sure.

@@dilliam1272 I did! After house of the rising sun the opening to sweet child of mine took me 4 weeks of practice of 4 hours a day. I'm glad he started me out with it.

Watching this made me feel really good about my beginner guitar years because most of these songs i learned as a beginner. I rhink people that start in rock and metal skip a lot of basics house of the rising sin was one of the first songs i ever learned but my family plays country and bluegrass

No one forgets their first; mine was Wonderful Tonight, followed by Stairway of course, then Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard, some Kinks tunes. The House of the Rising Sun, was after Hotel California... I didn't have an electric at the time, it was a Spanish Classical something or another, this was pre-internet days, spent hours in guitar stores reading music books since that was the only way (aside from by-ear) to learn new tunes, those were fun times...
According to Ritchie Blackmore himself Smoke on the Water was actually played by finger picking the d and g strings on open 3 and 5. No pick was used. Fun fact.

What about "one" by metallica, it's basically just the same notes with one changed finger in the opening and is pretty easy throughout most of the song until a certain part during the solo,
