    So refreshing to find such really quick video on essential tools. All the others just want to talk forever (one was 32 minutes for goodness sake - ridiculous). All about themselves and not about getting to the point. Thank you very much for this. I am returning to the hobby after 30 years and still have all my old tools but wanted a refresher! Thank you.

    This is a great tutorial! One thing I find fascinating is the different way people say decals. Here in my part of the U.S. we say it "decals" but the first time I spoke with a Canadian modeler, they said it "deckles" and you say it "deecles". Thanks for a great video that many will find helpful.

    Thanks for this helpful video. I am a young beginner just about to start my first model kit on a 1:48 Avro Lancaster Bomber B Mk.III. I decided to do this model as my Great Grandad was a Lancaster Bomber pilot of ED666. I even managed to find decals of the art work on the Lancaster Bomber he flew. Looking forward to getting started!

      Are you sure you want to start there? 1:48 scale models are more aimed towards advanced modellers, I personally would recommend something smaller maybe a 1:72 scale

    Excellent the bare essentials . Not everyone has the money for expensive tools . A micro drill set is inexpensive with a pin vice and very useful , can be got in the high street from say Hobbycraft

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +there siko in town Gaming The filler was from my local hardware shop, as was the sandpaper. It doesn't have to be specially for models, as long as it's fine grit sandpaper and smooth finish filler

    Hey, quick kits. What results can I expect from using acrylics to do mottling on fw190?

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Richard Cooper I doubt acrylics would get a very good finish as they're too fast drying and can't be reactivated once dry. If you work fast it may be possible to get a finish equivalent to enamels.

    when you say pva glue, is elmers okay for a beginner? What do you use. Also what is your filler?

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never used Elmers but I'm not sure it would be good because of the extra chemicals in it. I use basic cheap craft pva glue watered down. I use Ronseal smooth finish filler.

  • @erikdesormiers9458
    @erikdesormiers9458 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    What kind of paint would you recommend for a beginner? Something that simple to apply but would still give a nice finish

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Erik Desormiers acrylic paint for modelling, Revell and Airfix etc. will sell it. It's water based so it can be thinned with water to get a nicer finish and brushes can be cleaned in water. It also doesn't smell. Just make sure you're not using natural hair brushes when painting with it

    You use PVA glue to apply like Gloss varnish for decals but do you put that everywhere on the plane for panel lines?

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Max Paris I discovered my chalk wash technique for the panel lines doesn't require a gloss coat underneath, so I only use it for the decals

    Thank you Johnny

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, in fact it's better to use enamel varnish over acrylic paint (or acrylic varnish over enamel paint) because it means there is no chance of it reacting with the paint underneath the varnish

    do you have to get both micro sol and micro set to use them effectively?

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could get away with just using micro set, but the most important factor is a glossy/satin coat under the decals to stop the silvering. If you need the deals to bend around something then micro set and sol used together would be needed to be fully effective

    hi Owen what is better paint the vanish on with a brush or spray it on?
    Thank you Johnny:)

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Johnny, it depends what you're doing. If I just want to paint a small area I'll brush it on. If I want to seal the model I'll spray it on because if I used a brush it would disturb any chalk/water colour washes I had done. If you have to pick between a spray can or a pot of paint, I'd go spray can (just make sure to always spray it upside down for 5 seconds when you've done or you'll end up wasting lots of money like I have oops.. :D )

      You might want to consider the Humbrol 'matt cote' - I've never used it but apparently it doesn't yellow like varnish can sometimes

      No, not unless you put it on really thickly. Sometimes the varnish out of the pot turns a bit yellow - especially if you don't thin it
