It's not that the interviewer can't empathize, it's that she refuses. She is treating criminals as less than human, and thus not deserving of empathy. That's the belief we need to change.

Anyone read the book The Life of Bonnie and Clyde by the ride along of Blance Barrow
(Could Amanda play that part of Blanche?)

Interesting that Amanda felt compassion for the eldest Tsarnaev and the backlash against her opinion. The same thing happened to me. As a mother, I felt compassion for the youngest brother, I looked at the photos and the footage. I listened to the news, and heard commentary. I felt somehow he was being coerced by his culture, by his brother, and held to my opinion amid the backlash of my peers. I held a space open for forgiveness. I also reserved the right to change my mind at any time...and years down the road...I 'did' change my mind... when I saw that the youngest was showing no desire to be a better human. Disappointing. Going against the popular vote...often offers no merit, but I think that it is important...nonetheless!

This interviewer lacks the understanding of what empathy is

I think empathy is subjective. We, as human beings cannot feel empathy for every wayward soul, or everyone that crosses our path. It's just not possible. We can, however, Practice...the summoning up of that empathy...if...that is truly what we want to do.
