If you listen closely, you can hear a woman crying in the background in some parts but they cover it up with the music.. Much like (from what I know) how a victim in an abusive relationship tries to hide the abuse or justify it. It gives me the shivers.
i love how they use sweets to emphasize "sugar-coating" abuse. Great job Amanda!

Actually, the song is from the musical _Carousel_ and it was always supposed to be super tragic. But this is by far the best interpretation I've ever heard/seen!

Carousel. Some of the most beautiful haunting melodies ever, with the most maddening lyrics. This version is brilliant and turns the usual interpretation upside-down.
I was so surprised that it was Amanda singing here. It's so great to hear her voice in a higher key since she naturally sings in a low octave. She sang it so well!

I wasn't too crazy about this song when I heard it on the album. It sounded to me like it was saying "never question your lover; they're always right." Then I saw this, and it all makes sense. Amanda is so brilliant.
Is it weird that the part of this video that bothers me most is the baked beans, sprinkles & marshmallows thing they appear to be having as a side dish?
Nope. That's the most disturbing part for me as well. I almost gagged.
Annie Clark sings the main section, Amanda sings the section that shows her singing in the video, the second verse or so. Then they sing together at the end. She can make her voice lovely and high, but the really high part is Annie.

Wow, that's all I can say. After being a massive fan of Amanda and loving her album, watching the entire "Who Killed Amanda Palmer" videos finally and ending with this is, wow.
Woah. That's crazy. I had a sudden spark of inspiration for a play idea and thought that, for whatever reason, this version of this song and "Cruel" by St. Vincent would be perfect to help that inspiration grow. Then I look in the description and THE GIRL FROM ST. VINCENT IS ON THIS SONG. Craaaaazinessssss. I had no idea!

This video fills me with AFP love. I adore it's restraint, and the level of sexual tension between the two girls, but it retains that 1950's innocence right until the final image. Sheer genius!
Yet another video that I have missed. This gave me goosebumps, the already outstanding vocals from Amanda and Annie mixed with this gorgeously treated cinematography is just delightful and dark. I really want jelly now, which is amusing and alarming. Well done to the art team and to the credibility of acting from Annie and Amanda, simple and stunning.

It is Amanda, you can tell just by how her voice sounds and the little cracks that make it unique. Annie does the back up vocals near the end of the song.

I grew up with Carousel in the background. It was my mother's favorite musical. Problem is, the song is about a woman trying to justify being in an abusive relationship.
This song if from a Rogers and Hammerstein musical called Carousel. There are other nice songs in that musical and in their other musicals including The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, The King and I, and South Pacific.
The message isn't very nice now is it?
It was originally meant to be a tragic song. _Carousel_ is a fairly dark musical.

Knoxville Girl, Where The Wild Roses Grow, The Willow Garden, and Widow's Grove are all songs about men murdering their wives/lovers, with no reason given. And those are just off the top of my head. It's been a pretty popular theme in music/poetry for hundreds of years, often referred to as "the murdered sweetheart" pattern. The nearest contemporary I can think of would be Henry Lee/Loving Henry, telling of a woman murdering a man over unrequited love.

Best vid so far, along with shores of california and coin-operated boy; but THIS is a masterpiece of sarcasm.
You can tell at the "something made him the way he is" verse that it's Amanda singing, especially with her vocal inflection on the word "gave"--it's a little rougher and deeper, unlike Annie Clark's higher and more polished voice. I have both Amanda Palmer's CD and St. Vincent's CD "Marry Me," so I'm familiar with both their voices. It starts off with Annie, switches to Amanda, and then becomes a duet.

I'm sorry, I don't think that's how it is. There are clearly two different voices here-- the second of which is Amanda's. The CD says featuring Annie Clark, but it's not Annie Clark alone! That would be a bit strange to put on an Amanda Palmer CD. It's both of them. Annie first, then Amanda, then both of them together. That's why Amanda appears to be singing in the later part of the video but not the first-- she appears to be singing in the section she was actually singing in.
