umm, just some bloke you met, he said
no who are you really, you're not just some block, you're special
no there's million like me, he said, millions
and i said, well, where are they?
and he said
i dunno
and i said: no really, you've been all over the world, if there's millions like you, where are they?
and he said: behind the trees
i said, which trees?
all the trees.
i said, no i don't think so, neil, i think you're unique-
-no they're all behind the trees, they're all waiting to come out
and i said: when are they gonna come out?
when they've decided its okay.
and i said: well if they're all like you, and they're all behind trees, but you've come out of the tree and you're in the middle, what are they doing back there...because then they're not actually like you...
i'm the first, he said.
okay...so you're like a pioneer?
yes, he said, and...any day now they're gonna come out. i think they're a bit scared. they're like...the read-headed lady...we're not quite sure about her.
and i said: it sounds a lot like you.
well of course it does, they're me.
yeah but you came out. they're behind the trees. you're not behind the tree. you're out from behind the tree. i don't get it.....*sigh*....i don't think anything's behind the trees.
"They're a bit scared. They're like, 'The red-headed lady... we're not quite sure about her.' "
"Sounds a lot like you."

Dammit, even Neil's sleep-talking is worthy of it's own book.

I think Neil is right, there are so many beautiful minds out there too afraid to show their work, just waiting behind the trees, unfortunately I dont think all of them will come out, just a few and with time.

I love the idea of a meta-fairytale: that just as a character in a story (like Coraline) believes they're normal, but _we_ find out that there's this shadow-tale around their life, the person who _makes_ the story about the character has their own fairytale. Your ordinary extraordinary person who sits and has tea in the morning in their favorite mug with the hairline crack in it might be a little bit of a fairytale themselves. This is exactly the kind of thing I'd always hoped was true when I was a child. Amanda Palmer

This was adorable! I'm still trying to figure out what Neil meant by "Behind the Trees" but maybe I'm just over analyzing weird dream stuff!
Aaron Pelchat I interpreted it as the various facets of his personality and self. The one she sees has dared to bare himself in front of her, while all the other sides are still not sure of opening oneself completely to another person. But he's definitely in love, and he's slowly encouraging all his inner thoughts and emotions to slowly come out and trust the lady with the red hair.

no no... you really do need to look into stuff like that. Just the smallest detail can change the whole meaning of it
I thought that maybe he's from another planet...for real and there are many more here but in hiding. Many brothers who might think exactly the way Neil does but they can't come out because we are all so scared of aliens that we might kill them...so they remain in hiding.
I really hope there are millions of Neils standing around behind trees. We need more of him.
Their kid is gonna have the coolest parents in the world.
I dreamed the answer to everything one night, but it slipped away before I could write it down. I guess I'll have to keep dreaming until it comes back. :-)
1938Superman I've done that too.......I hate knowing everything then forgetting it all
1938Superman I dreamt about the "answer" to religion. Something that would unite everyone and bring peace to the earth.... something to explain everything about religion and make everyone understand each other. I was so enlightened about this fact and I thought to myself
"I HAVE TO tell the world. When they hear this they'll all understand. Finally people will stop arguing over religion. "
I actually remembered what "it" was.
This is the answer to everything that will bring peace to this earth.
" Religion is like fruit. "
Yep. Sleeping me is so enlightened.
Lets see ... Religion is like fruit. It forms. Reaches its peak. Begins to decline. Then withers away. Yet the tree remains. Humanity is the tree. Each new fruit and its cycle of life is us tirelessly trying to create new ways to understand ourselves. ... That's the best I've got. :-)
1938Superman Actually I think it was more along the lines of " Religion is like fruit. Some like pears and some like apples. blablabla something.... We shouldn't force someone to eat pears who likes apples. Just enjoy your fruit. " It's not wrong exactly, just not that revolutionary. I like your explanation tho :D

Neil can't help tell stories even when he sleeps. What a great look inside his head! Poor man. I would be asking him questions all night and recording his answers.

TIL Neil Gaiman can literally create amazing stories in his sleep.
I'd like to think that what Neil meant by people like him are "behind the trees" are the people who are creative in forms of art like writing and painting are just hiding themselves in the shadows, waiting for someone to pull them out into the light and in the open so they can share their gifts to the world as Neil and Amanda had.
I'm a little ashamed to admit that it's possible that I am one of those "behind the trees". I write fanfictions but I've never really written my OWN fiction mainly because I'm afraid that my work is not really worth showing to the world...
We're behind the trees, Neil. Maybe we just need someone to pull us into the light.

This is fascinating. I love the story and the animations. Neil's sleeping mind seems just as creative as his waking mind (or maybe they're one and the same?).
My brother used to talk in his sleep. It was always about bears, and never particularly comprehesible or interactive. But this, this is wondrous.

A veces, mi esposo Neil dice cosas extrañas cuando está medio-dormido.
A veces, si son realmente buenas, las escribo.
Una vez no tuve papel.
Así que fui al baño y me dejé un mensaje de voz.
Y lo encontré en mi teléfono unos años más tarde.
**Se enciende la luz**
"¿Quién eres?", pregunté.
"Mhhhmh... sólo un ***", dijo él.
"No, quién eres realmente... *** eres especial".
"No, hay millones como yo.", dijo él. "Millones".
Y yo dije: "Bueno, ¿dónde están?".
Y él dijo: "No lo sé".
Y yo dije: "No, en serio. Has estado en todo el mundo, si hay millones
como tú, ¿dónde están?".
Y él dijo: "Detrás de los árboles..."
Yo dije: "¿Cuáles árboles? ¿Todos los árboles?" Dije: "No, no lo creo Neil.
Creo que eres único y..."
"No, están todos detrás de los árboles. Están todos esperando para salir."
Y yo dije: "¿Cuándo van a salir?"
"Cuando decidan que está bien."
Entonces dije: "Si todos son como tú y están todos detrás de los
árboles, pero tú saliste del árbol y estás en el medio, ¿qué están
haciendo ahí detrás? Porque, de hecho, no son como tú."
"Soy el primero", dijo él.
"Bien. Entonces eres como un pionero".
"Sí", dijo él. "Y cualquier día de estos ellos saldrán. Pero están un
poco asustados; piensan: la dama de cabello rojo, no estamos del todo
seguros acerca de ella..."
Y yo dije: "Suena mucho a ti".
"Bueno, por supuesto que somos nosotros. Ellos son yo".
"Sí, pero tú saliste. Ellos están detrás de los árboles. Tú no estás detrás
del árbol. Tú saliste de detrás del árbol. Yo no creo... yo no creo que haya nada detrás de los árboles".
Lo traduje al español para que todos mis amigos pudieran
disfrutarlo--exceptuando los -*-*-*-, donde no termino de entender qué dice Amanda--.
Lo dejo por acá también.
Correcciones admitidas--y fomentadas; de hecho, tengo mis dudas acerca
de la puntuación y el encomillado en diálogos escritos--.
Advertencia: licencias poéticas fueron tomadas (como en "they're like",
que traduje como "piensan").

I would like to fully understand every word of it, but I rewatched it a few thousand times and some words keeps on not being clear to a non-mother-language like me. In spite of this, I sincerely love it, just as much as I love you two. Please, never stop being amazing and loveable and everything and making extraordinary pieces of art
