I Had To Pay The King's Tax In Ghana (

  • I had come to Kumasi, the heart of the kingdom of Ashanti, and was looking for things to do. Someone recommended I check out this place called Bosomtwe Lake, and so off I went. I ended up meeting a lot of nice people -- but also had to pay some taxes along the way.

    As someone from Kumasi, this was so fun to watch. A few things to note;
    When the taxi driver mentions 3 million, he actually means 300c. People in Ghana quote the currency figures in two ways. Before the redenomination and after. After the redenomination, 4 zeros were cancelled. So 3,000,000 = 300.
    People in Kumasi aren't too fluent in English. So sometimes when you speak the Twi, with your accent, they still think you're speaking English and don't respond. That's also why some of them weren't too communicative. Eg the driver
    The sachet water isn't free. He just bought it for you ( the driver ).
