George Michael- well said John!! One of the best voices ever in my opinion and such a lovely guy. That Grace Jones album is excellent- I listen to it loads. Perfect for a Friday night with a bottle of wine 🍷. Cheers John!
Sensational tag, John! So cool that we both have that Prince Sign O' The Times 12 inch. Love the needle drops. Brilliant vid, you have a new subscriber. Cheers! 🙏
Still the best intro that the VC has ever seen. Great to join you on this Saturday morning John. Looks like the Tag's are already in play. I will certainly enjoy this one. Stoked that you showed "Holland". That 1966 to 1973 period of the BB's was so so good. Brian's songwriting was flowing. OK. Check back later on. Enjoy the weekend J~ Rob/Boston
Hi Rob. I’ve been listening to the Beach Boys “Holland” quite a bit recently. It’s a fantastic record and probably underrated. Hope all is good with you. Cheers. John
Great tag John with a few surprise responses thrown in to keep us on our toes. Thank you for the mention and very kind words. I will try and provide more content just for you...although I probably won't do my tag response until New Year's day when I'm nursing a hangover...cheers Dale
P.S. worked with both the Neville Brothers and the Meters (when they briefly re-formed in the 90s), recording them for radio broadcasts here in the US. I'd first seen the Nevilles back in '82 and was blown away. Leo Nocentelli was quite the dude! Do you have his solo record put out by Light in the Attic (I think)? Wonderful stuff!
If I had picked up that Gene Vincent it would be my best find. Payback and Stone To The Bone were the only two songs I liked when it came out. The JBs Doing It To Death got a lot more play back then. I agree the best sounding drums is easy. I find it amazing how great Lennon/McCartney were at song writing yet most of their solos are far from great. I purged all my Prince except Dirty Mind and the Black album. His vocals are the reason why I purged them. Reincarnated as Robert Palmer, you horn dog you. I find Gatefold33 humorous with his over analyzing and statistics.
John with the goods love your Vinyl Tag 2025 that Steel Pulse was stunning brother I need to get there records and that Grace Jones was killer . I knew Prince was going to be in there marvelous singles Happy Holidays John.
John, good response for this vinyl tag. When you answered 'AN ALBUM FROM THE 1980’s YOU STILL LISTEN TO? ' I just glanced at the screen and I thought you were showing a Comsat Angels that I didn't recognize (though I do have Chasing Shadows), then I realized it was Little Angels. Thanks, Chris
Great video, John. Have you seen that massive “Island Book Of Records” coffee table tome? Great photos, album cover scans and history of the label. Happy holidays!
Great Video John. You’re always so passionate and informative and I’ve always loved that about you. Didn’t expect to see Shirley Bassey as best drum sound. I’ll be hunting out some Steel Pulse on my next record store outing. Happy Holidays 🎅🏼
Hey John. Great video and selections. Love the story connected to the Queen album. Shirley Bassey, so good. Love No Mercy. Wow. The Little Angels rock! I going to take this on next week. Well done. Cheers
Great tag John! I was waiting for the punchline when you said Shirley Bassey had the best drums! So, had a listen 👌 The guitar at the beginning isn’t half bad either. Then a weird thing happened. Spotify moved on to the next song… Public Enemy’s Harder Than You Think… or so I thought. Weird to jump from Bassey to PE. Had a look on Spotify and it’s a song called Jezahel that Chuck and the boys sampled. Tremendous stuff from The Dame. Who knew that Shirley Bassey would be added to my want list for 2025. Oh, The Payback too! Looking forward to Dale’s tag! Cheers, Jack
Great, and varied, response John. So many fine albums you showed. Nice to see the great Shirley Bassey getting a VC mention. I love 'Listen Without Prejudice', just wonderful, as is 'Oh Mercy. Good mention of the, frankly, amazingly good Neville Brothers' 'Yellow Moon'. 'Stage' is excellent too. The last CD release had the corrected running order. "Surf's Up' is my favourite Beach Boys album.
Hi David. I’m surprised that the Neville Brothers “Yellow Moon” isn’t mentioned more in the VC. It’s a beautiful record. Like “Oh Mercy”, it owes a lot to the Daniel Lanois production sound. Cheers. John
Clones of Dr Funkenstein was sent to me by a record club when I was a teenager. I could not figure out what the heck this album was but then I dropped a needle and became a huge Parliament fan.
great video John , I agree with older records is Capitol records done in mono sound great the recording engineer's knew who record a record play back .
Vinyl Tag already! Damn I havent even finished my best of 2024 video yet. Great picks man. I love Palmer lately too. And George Micheal was a great talent. Gone too soon. I loved his Older album. Great lyrics by Billy Bragg. And I like old Morrissey stuff still despite his lame politics.
Hi Jason. Vinyl Tag has come early this year! I need to get a decent copy of George Michael’s “Older”. He had such a good voice. I think that album was the last decent thing that he did. Chock full of great singles. Cheers!
@@6inchpianist yeah would be a nice on to get on wax! I have a couple CD copies of Older. It was a late night staple during my rave days. A nice 'post club' break music wise :) Cheers man
I've got the Johnny Harris album 'Movements' which is brilliant & includes that Shirley Bassey track as an instrumental, 'Stepping Stones is the killer funk instrumental on that. Interesting thoughts on Moz, as I said in my last vid i've never been able to fully square that circle. 'If I was your girlfriend' was an incredible single. I was engaged in 92 & my gf was a hair metal freak, I was dragged around Skid Row, White Lion & Little Angels gigs. You've inspired me to do this, but i'm going to wait until Jan 1st when i'm surrounded by half empty quality street tins, loads of eggnog & Southampton have just lost their new years day match to Fraggle Rock three nil.
Hi Harris. I have the Johnny Harris album. Those drums on “Stepping Stone” are mental. I first heard that track on a Blaxploitation comp in the mid-90’s. It’s amazing how much stuff I was introduced to through compilation CD’s back in the 90’s. Life changing stuff! I was probably at some of those rock gigs! I can see you as a White Lion fan. I like the way all of their album titles were lion related - Pride, Main Attraction, Big Game. Although, the novelty wore off very quickly….
Nice Video ! Bowie Stage there are Dutch, Blue vinyl Blue/Yellow...etc etc ..but Bowie Stage sounds evern better on the Remastered Bowie Zeit ! 77 - 79 CD Box ...."Zeit sits on the Racks" easy to find .
Parliament are brilliant I pretty much collected everything Clinton did… was super happy when DrDre started sampling and getting George involved with using him in making the whole Gangsta Rap genre with Snoop. The clones is so trippy as with most of Parliament albums. MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION! no expiry date on that. I only collect Soul, Funk & Disco but also Rap n Hip hop. been buying vinyl since 1968.
I used to go home at lunchtime for News of the World side 1. Horrible embarrassing memory of doing air guitar to Fight from the Inside and being caught red handed by my friend Lisa who'd come round to pick me up to go back.
Good choices John - echo the comments on George Michael - a lovely fella by all accounts who helped a lot of people on the quiet- my uncle went to school with someone from Steel Pulse don’t you know !
Look at that. Friend of the stars! I wonder who from Steel Pulse your uncle knew. I used to see the drummer, Steve Nisbet, in The Seventh Trap pub in Perry Bar. Nice bloke. 👍👍
