    Some of you caught it, but I misspoke on the model of turntable - it is a Technics SL-1700 MKII (not a 1200). And I made my one mistake for the year so early this year!!!! LOL

      So cool! I bought that model way back in 1981 thru the navy exchange catalog. I loved it. Direct drive, auto-return. I bought it tax free. it was somewhere around $200.00 new back then. But It's hard to say. I purchased my whole set up thru the catalog including a Marantz receiver AR15 speakers and a Teac cassette deck for around $700.00

    Hello Melinda, Your husband is so spot on with his analysis with the economy now compared to 1970. Most people wouldn’t been able to fix that turntable good thing Phillip is mechanically inclined and with not very much money invested he got it to work. Happy New Year Melinda and Phillip 🥰

    I have a mint condition single-owner SL-1600 MKII (Fully Automatic) and it is my #1 turntable. It has isolation that is amazing. You can pound on the plinth or the table it sits on and NOTHING will make it to the stylus. I heard they used the 1600 MKII's in Radio Stations because of that. Way, way better than any of the SL-1200 versions out there. Much nicer looking too. No stupid slider for the pitch changes on the right side. And the original Red Strobe Crystal instead of the big blue pop-up strobe on newer models. Congratulations on your new acquisition! FYI.. Mine has a cueing lever and the button. As well as the Vertical Tracking angle adjustment at the base of the deck.

    I believe both of you are spot on when you say there are other factors when comparing prices from the 60 and 70's with today. It drives me crazy when people say with inflation it cost the same. There were less options back then and now you have a lot more things that eat your money away( internet, cable,cell phones, computers,ect.). That is not even counting wages. It is easy to cherry pick stats to make a point. It is so nice finding an unexpected deal.

    I feel like our expectations are different today. When I was a kid in the 70s it was a big deal if a new record came in the house. Our family collection was *tiny* by most standards. Could say the same about cars, my parents usually owned second-hand sedans but these days everyone thinks they need a loaded, V8 SUV. I dont really love the price of full retail vinyl but I don't buy that much of it. Yet i *will* splurge on an audiophile pressing if it's something I *really* want.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      I agree with you. We didn't have a lot of records either. I played the same albums over and over again. That's why certain artists and albums are so nostalgic. We used to spend a lot more time with each album. Excellent point. Thank you and happy new year. 🤗♥️

    I still have my dad's SL 1600MK II which is a fully automatic turntable that senses the size of the record that my brother and I brought for him as a birthday gift. Those turntables were bulletproof! I had three pair of Technics tables for my mobile dejay business, 2-1200MkII's, 2 -1800MkII's(manual version of the above), and 2-1500MkII's. Sold five out of six when I retired the business, and kept an 1800MkII. That's been playing flawlessly for 45 years. The 1500's are with a cousin, who still uses one of them for his stereo. Love 'em!

    Happy New Year 2025 to you both. So nice to see your beloved husband Philip here with you. Melinda, your looks at Philip are so delicious. A Technics SL-1700 MKII. What a beautiful turntable. As the proud owner of an SL-1200G and two SL-1210MKIIs from the mid 80s, my love for Technics goes back to those 80s.
    Why actually? I can remember it like it was yesterday. I was in a disco as a young teenager. I saw these two 1210s and a DJ from the States, who was already ageing at the time, mixed the records together perfectly. During a break, I asked this DJ why these twelve-tens? He replied with the words that have always stayed with me: ‘Well my young Bavarian friend, believe me, girls come and go, the twelve-tens are for life!’
    Keep up the good work. A hearty ‘Servus’ from Bavaria

    Happy New Year! Great to see Phillip. Really like his sense of humor. I’m buying fewer record, but not because of the higher costs. For new music, I just stream it on Amazon Music or Spotify. Like used vinyl 20 odd years ago, CD’s are making a comeback because used CD’s are cheap and plentiful. But, from what I’ve read the sales of new CD’s in 2024 were down from 2023.
    The Technics SL-1700 was a great find. I have a the SL1200 Mk2 which is my main turntable. It plays records flawlessly and sounds great in my system. The SL-1700 will serve you well for many years. Congratulations on finding one new in a box!

    Hello Melinda and thanks for your discussion about CD’s vs vinyl LP’s. A very big reason I migrated to CD’s (aside from vinyl becoming scarce) was because they were portable. There were no CD recorders on the market like there were for cassettes and 8 tracks so you couldn’t continue to purchase vinyl and simply record them to a tape format like so many people did back in the day. The end of CD’s really came about because of streaming because it was even more portable. It’s hard for me to see CD’s making a comeback because of the popularity of streaming. I think before I would go back to CD’s I would invest in a network streamer and subscribe to a streaming service. As much as I enjoy vinyl records and favor them over other formats, I still stream music far more than I listen to vinyl. My two cents…

  • @francescotenti193
    @francescotenti193 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    Nice video, a lot of topics covered. No, I am not of those guys who went back buying CD's if not for SACD's and even those I almost quit because of many titles no longer available. Glad you mentioned inflation and decreased spending power especially in the last few years, I am confident things will change for the better in the near future. As far as prices of vinyl, I don't have too many complaints, but, as I often mention right here, I will not spend ridiculous prices for a single album, $150.00 for whatever re-mastering edition, with some booklets and some pictures and whatever else, will never make its way into my house. I buy records for listening pleasure and not as a form of investment, Wall Street takes care of that and has for many years. Congrats on the turntable, a fabulous score! As far as the Bob Dylan movie, I will patiently wait until it makes its way into Blu Ray format and then I'll get it when on sale.
    Happy New Year to you and family and the best to your daughter in her medical career, I remember "those days" several decades ago.

    so far, my 2025 music purchases have all been used (6 days in) 1 used vinyl -VG++ (INXS -Shabooh Shoobah) along with 6 used CD's & spent maybe a total of $30 - this is definitely going to be my trend for 2025. I am heading to my local store though to pick up the latest Rhino Fleetwood Mac release (live at the record plant) I appreciate Rhino releases because they seem to be very affordable. Excellent presentation and discussion Melinda! Nice to see Philip once again too. I agree with Philip 100% that disposal income is not as it was. Inflation at the moment plays a big part on how one spends their money. Grocery shopping is insane, and takes a good part of our income now. Perhaps CD’s are selling now because of the lower cost, but in time I think this will change. Vinyl is not going away. I’m jealous of your turntable purchase. It would be nice if table manufactures would bring back some of the amenities found on tables years ago. Tone arm returning, and even players with spindles that dropped multiple records. I thank you and Philip for sharing your thoughts in this video. Much appreciated!

    Thanks for a great episode Melinda, Happy New Year! We've all got different circumstances but certainly here in the UK it's the "Golden Age" of CD buying. Second-hand CDs can be bought for peanuts, $3 or $4 equivalent, and there's far less risk than buying used vinyl. I rip CDs & play through my digital source, and I confess, being old & creaky, it does save having to jump up to turn records over...I still buy the occasional LP because I love playing them & reading the cover.

    • @badmofaux
      @badmofaux 7 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I never stopped buying CDs. (altho I don’t buy nearly as many as I once did)
      Never could accept the idea of paying for downloads. If I’m spending the money, then I want to get something tangible for it. Yes I then just turn around and rip it into my computer but I still have the original stored away.
      Anyway it was only 5-6 years ago that you could find them for next to nothing, sometimes only the cost of shipping. I even had a couple sellers on eBay send me multiple copies of something just to get rid of them.
      At some point that changed. More some of the more obscure stuff has turned collectible it seems.

    • @badmofaux
      @badmofaux 7 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Also, I just bought a new CD player to match my amplifier. Single disc, nice and simple. Remains to be seen how much I actually use it (I play vinyl mostly), but it’s there if I need it.
      There was a period of time there where you couldn’t really buy one. I remember searching the thrift stores, which is not my habit. Never did find a decent one.

    I took my mom and brother to see a Complete Unknown the day after Christmas. The three of us loved it! I'm glad the movie focused on the years 1961 to 1965 since that's the era of Dylan I'm most familiar with. My favorite Bob Dylan song is the live version of "Maggie's Farm" from the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Mike Bloomfield tears it up with his lead guitar playing on that song. Happy New Year guys! Hope 2025 is FANTASTIC for you. The cost thing with vinyl is really a crazy thing. I don't think it solely the overall increase/inflation from 60 years ago that is the issue as much as how much of that increase has taken place in the 10-12 years. I know working at the shop we regularly find ourselves saying ..."That was a just a $3 records 10 years ago which now is normally going for $25" I'll have customer bring two records to the counter and I scan them both and the total is $92. Without thinking about it I will find myself double checking bc I felt I rang something in wrong lol.

    cd's never left.in fact, i sold the majority of my record collection and donated the rest to a local college radio staion.also, i can go on amazon or ebay and find any music my little heart desires at a fraction of the price. Most people don't understand the requirements of setting up a turntable to retrieve the most music out of those grooves. for me at 70, i just love my cd transport with a moderatly priced DAC, hooked up to a low powered 300B tube amp with effecient speakers. But it's all good ,,right? it's all about how we enjoy listening to our music.

    Hey Melinda, Phillip, Great Video, thanks for sharing your great TT Find. I Can relate. I Scored on a SL1600 Several years ago, that was under the original owners bed for 40 years, w/ original box. Barely used. I Paid more than I Wanted to, but was worth it, Fully automatic, Not a problem, I can do all the maintenance on those myself still. Put an Ort. Blue Cart. on it, Sounds Awesome! I rotate that TT With My Empire Troubadour W/ the Blue as well. Love them Both, thinking of upgrading that cart soon. I am not a Dylan fan as well, but did like the Movie, it is common that people who are geniuses, are just social bozo's & terrible at personal relationships as was displayed in the movie. And regarding your Old people comment , Hey, I resemble that remark! LOL! One more thing, Melinda, you are such a great TH-camr, always responding / acknowledging each commenter, bless your heart. I know it must be a burden at times, Cuz that is the price you pay when you are a victim of your own success! Please know that if you were not to respond to my comment, I Would not be offended, I Get it. Life is Busy. God Bless you, Phillip, & your family.

      It sounds like your turntable was an amazing find. We are so grateful to find ours. ♥️
      I appreciate that Dylan read the script and approved. He let them portray him in an honest light, warts and all. He has his faults but he also had some sweet moments with Woody Guthrie. His talent is undeniable. Thank you and have a blessed new year. ♥️

    Maybe its just youtube but I can hear a fair amount of reverberation when you talk. Thanks for the vid and you should do more of them together. As for CD’s, I started streaming over a decade ago and sold all of my CD’s off shortly after. About a month ago I bought an Audiolab transport to use with a Chord DAC and re-bought some favourite Jazz. Sounds amazing and probably cost me a tenth of the vinyl equivalent which I also have. Win win. To both of you a very happy New Year.

    Great video to kick off the New Year! I agree with the observations Phillip made on inflation and its impact on our discretionary income. My guess is that moving forward record collections will blend vinyl, cd’s and streaming based upon availability, quality and price. We’re not going to give up our love of collecting music. We’re just going to be more savvy in our purchases. Issue 2: Love, love, loved A Complete Unknown. Timothy Chalamet wisely chose not to impersonate Dylan, but rather captured his attitude and demeanor. The big revelation in the movie was Edward Norton’s portrayal of Pete Seeger. Brilliant! Favorite Dylan song: Desolation Row featuring the brilliant acoustic guitar work of Nashville session ace Charlie McCoy. Thanks again for another fun show. I hope you and your family have a great year!

    I own a Technics 1710 which is the same as a 1700 except for the color. I had an ortofon wm Blue on it. It worked fine but i noticed that the tonearm, when plauing an lp, was not level. The 1700 tone arm doesn't have a VTA on the back of the tone arm. I just mounted a vintage Sumiko Blue Point and it's almost level while playing. I think the 1700 tone arm needs a higher cart that the 2m series.

    Nice find, but if the photo at 1.20 shows how you received it, I'm not convinced that it is truly NOS (new old stock). When factory packed, the counterweight would have been packed separately in one of the foam end blocks, and wrapped in paper. The main turntable chassis, platter, and rubber mat would have all been wrapped individually in protective plastic.
    This seems weird considering the transit screws are still in place. Perhaps someone started to put it together and gave up.
    The SL-1700 Mk2 was made from 1979 to 1981. The MSRP in 1981 was $390

    Happy New Year! i could definitely see CDs making a comeback. They're basically the perfect format and near-indestructible. I think they were just 'unfashionable' which means it's inevitable they'll become 'cool' again with the passing of time. PS: hate to be that guy, but isn't that a 1700, not a 1200? The 1200 is basically the same but has an incredibly solid, heavy base. You could throw it on the floor and it'd probably be fine

    Awesome Video!!! Yes the CD is making a comeback. Companies I think are pricing themselves out of business. I worked where they made CD's in 2000. To make a CD, Case, with shrinkwrap and hype stickers and labor was 99 cents. The CD sold in stores for 11 to 15 dollars at the time. So what do folks think about that profit margin.

    Congrats! You finally got a real turntable! Isn't it obvious why the better turntable manufacturers copy Technics? lol
    In 60+ years, I never stopped buying records(gawd I'm old) and have never stopped buying CD's since they were introduced in the U.S. In fact, I've got a new CD and an LP which arrived today! I've got 2 shipments en route from UDiscover Music, because of their 50% discount. I've been waiting about a week for The Sound Of Vinyl to ship my last order.
    Cassettes are supposed to be coming back but I was never into the pre-recorded cassette tapes. The quality was never there. I did buy a reconditioned Pioneer cassette deck to go with my Pioneer quadraphonic receiver. I have some blank cassettes and was given a box of newly manufactured ones, but I have no interest in pre-recorded cassettes.

    Aloha
    Melinda and Philip
    Hau'oli Makahiki Hou !
    Congratulations on your Technics Turntable, such a score, right place right time!
    As far as record prices getting to expensive, it was for me in 2024, I didn't purchase that many at all.
    Disposable income is the key for me. Even here in Honolulu, Hawaii
    people who just enjoy music are going back to Cd's, & these are ones who also have vinyl. Of course most of them are younger than I am.
    These music lovers grew up in an era of Cd's most likely they were in High School in the 1990's when Cd's were the biggest selling format, if not the only one.
    Sound quality depending on Stereo unit, but car units Cd's were King !
    I still have a lot of Cd's in boxes
    stored under our house. I even have a huge Jazz Cd's from a friend who gave them to me about 20 + priority mailing boxes full, he was really into Bill Evans, so there's at least 40+ of those.
    Your husband Philip hit it on the nose
    It's the generation behind you that will make Cd's popular again, They are at the age of disposable income...
    Melinda, thanks always for keeping us up to date & having your husband Philip on camera. Looking forward to seeing what record album ms you purchased from Sound of Vinyl.
    I also ordered from Sound of Vinyl 50% off sale, got some awesome record albums at great prices & with free shipping to Hawaii.
    I also ordered from UDISCOVERED MUSIC 50% off site too, both of them had a few different items.
    Looking forward to watching your next videos & hopefully your husband Philip will be in some of them.

For me I get much more bank for my buck buying CDs, I don't have to worry about the playability/quality of CDs, and I need much less space to store them, so even though I bought vinyl when I was younger, I only buy CDs now. I am speaking from Ireland. Vinyl records have got more expensive here but may not gone up as dramatically as in the US. Second hand CDs are generally dirt cheap in Ireland and you generally won’t go wrong picking them up while old vinyl can be skippy and crackly. New releases on CDs are generally less than half price with a typical CD around $16 with equivalent vinyl releases about $33 to $45 each. Music recorded digitally from mid 1980s really benefits from being on CDs. I sort of preferring vinyl for older analog recordings.

    Agree with Phillip, it is an emotional and intellectual shock to the system when considering the inflationary impact of the last four years compared to the rate inflation used to increase. And it is pretty wide spread across the board. But maybe it will continue to decline as it has over the last 4 years, but which were much higher rates than the prior 6 years.
    I don’t think the CD revival will be long lasting, but I do think vinyl will continue to be as popular as ever amongst the over 40 crowd. Too many great memories and emotions attached to this format to let it go. Who the heck knows what the youngsters will be in to in the next few years.

    Great video, and great to see Philip again, really appreciate his perspectives. Nice score on the turntable. Guessing he didn't break it in with a Dylan or KISS record hahaha.
    Regarding CDs or vinyl, I'm seeing an increase in interest in CDs, particularly among younger people. I was at a record store recently, when a group of young shoppers came in and I heard them excitedly say "they have CDs here." I'm buying up used CDs at second hand shops and thrift stores, and storing them away. I buy vinyl as well, but only when I can find deals. Speaking of, I recently bought the VH For Unlawful 2 LP/2 CD/BR set on Amazon for $55 less 30% off coupon, for total of $39. Nice set, has the Grundman mastering, lp sounds great, better to my ears than the 2023 CD box set.

I have not seen the Dylan film, yet. I may wait for streaming because… it’s SO expensive to go to the movies! (Speaking of how expensive things are. When I was a little kid in the ‘60s, the theater in my small hometown in Texas they had children’s tickets and it was - are you ready? - 25 cents. And my dad would give my sister and I a quarter to get candy and sodas. Now a night at the movies for two is easily $50!! But I digress.

    The internet is great for repairing sites. I too picked up a old Technics SL-220 from a antiques shop needing repair, went on the internet, repaired it myself, works like a charm. Records I`m looking for are early pressings that are hard to find in good condition and cheap. I don`t mind used CDs or Cassettes for the low cost and some artists do put their music on cassettes. This was a good topic Mel, Phil and I saved some $$$ and that was a great find, also seeing movies of an artists life can be mind blowing. I recently got to see the movie Ray, and while they`re still alive at the time of the screening makes it all that much better. RIP Ray Charles.

      I still need to see the movie Ray. Thank you for mentioning it. As a teenager, I always bought cassettes. They were very convenient and probably very affordable now depending on the artist. Thank you and happy new year. 🤗♥️

    Awesome find on the new turn table. I just ordered Miles Davis Birth of the Blue from Accoustic sounds and picked up Chet Baker, and Gaetz and Gilberto to round out adding some Jazz with David Gilmour and Katie Melua. The Gaetz and Gilberto record was the 33rpm not the 45 rpm which you talked about recently. $150? is just not in the cards at the moment. I mean I could but as your husband sad it is about discretionary spending and I had rather spend mroe on the system to get my money's worth out of a $150 vinyl purchase.
    A guy in my Church small group said his 15 year old son just picked up a CD player. IMO CDs are making a comeback which is kind of funny to me as I never stopped buying. The 1 used local CD shop that has survived over 25 years is seeing a diverse and bigger crowd. Another guy in the group liked the Dylan movie both guys mentioned are big into making and traveling to concerts.

      I agree. CDs are an affordable way for a lot of people to enjoy having a physical format. It allows them to go to record shops and sign through the music. ♥️
      I still need that Miles Davis record. You made some great choices. I have never heard a bad sounding version of Getz/Gilberto so you will love your version. ♥️🤗 Thank you and happy new year.

    I upgraded from a Rega P1 which was excellent to a Technics SL1500C. I have since upgraded the feet and platter mat (Funk Firm) as well as the cartridge (Nagaoka MP-200). I am very happy with this set up. It sounds amazing and is user friendly. The auto-lift is so nice to have. I am the kind of person who puts on a record when I am doing chores around the house so every time a record would hit the runout groove with the the Rega, I would start cussing.

    Happy New year! Nice to see you Phil , usually the husband is the audiophile. CDs are going to make a comeback, I buy them for $2 and a lot of them and good ones at thrift store near me and I bought a vintage high end blue Ray SACD (super audio CD) for $15 and if you want a SACD now they are thousands and they sound great. I just bought the SACD Fleetwood Mac rumours and dire straights SACD and the sound quality is really good I run it through my dac. The reason why I collect CDs is that they are cheap even new ones, the sound quality is really good if you have a good transport and DAC. They are easy to store and records are to expensive. I'm not going down that rabbit whole myself. I wanted to but I don't have that kinda $ TBH. Times are tough like Phil said. Everything just got so expensive, I try not to waste money I have to work hard for it so I build my own speakers, cook my own health food, go to the gym, and watch a movie on my surround sound.. I try to live minimal these days. But I optimistic about the future 🙏

    Those Technic tables from the 70s are also known for speed stability issues. $160 is a fair price for such a table in new never been touched condition even if it did not work at first.
    I got a Pioneer PL-510A at a flea market years ago that was near new condition and still in the box. I had to throw out the box because it was deteriorating. (about 48 years old at the time of purchase). A little of the silkscreen print on the control panel had worn off somehow, but other than that it was nearly untouched. I got it for $25. Brought it home and it worked straight away. I cleaned it including light restoration of the quality dustcover those things came with back then and I use it to this day. In my using it I also discovered just how built those old Pioneer tables are, the thing is bullet proof. And as for speed accuracy, it seems Pioneer focused on that, because per measurements I did the table is deadly accurate in speed control. My first cart on it was a $50 AudioTechnica then upgraded to a $120 Audio Technica. I just mounted a new Sumiko Olympia ($200) and it has about 7 hours on it and that brought the table up a couple of notches. It has never sounded better! I would not mount a $400 or $500 cart on this $25 table (They were around $250 back in 1973). Damn thing is 52 years old now and works like a champ.
    I also have a Denon DP47f (circa 1986) purchased in NOS condition for $400 a few years ago. I mounted a Ortofon 2M Bronze on it. That cart is about the limit for that table. I use it mostly. Back in the day the DP47f went for around $600 to $800. I had offers years ago right after I bought it for $1200 to $1400. I still have no idea why I was being offered that for it, but it still is not for sale. Today it goes for around $700 to $800 in excellent condition. I would not mind a modern turntable (direct drive preferred), but my tables aren't broken and those damn Pioneers (I also have a PL-530) just keep going and going.
    As passionate as I am about vinyl records (I'm a historian/custodian) and I recently stopped buying vinyl completely. The music I like is older and sounds best on vinyl as opposed to quick cheap burning onto CD. However, I am also not buying the CD versions of older music I prefer on vinyl. Why did I stop? Exactly due to prices and it will get worse. Maybe someday they will come down to earth again (likely due to very low demand that is coming due to prices and the prices of gear).
    I don't buy into the hogwash about inflation tracking. The prices we see today on records new and used are all false. It is a giant grift. RSD is part of the lynchpin of the grift. Today it cost around $200k to $300k to make a vinyl record when you factor in all the steps, including packaging. So $25 to $30 for a new record today is almost justified. However, $20+ for a old used record where about 50 million copies were made is near criminal. Analog Production and MoFi records are just ripoffs. They are like Audioquest, you are only paying for packaging and "bragging rights", but not getting a quality product. The main thing though is truth: Costs have gone up outrageously on everything including just the basics and it will be getting worse, It is going to come down to a matter of survival unfortunately. The other reason I stopped is due to other things taking priority at the moment (Ukraine being one of them) and so I devote some of my time to that rather than records and such at this time.
    I stopped eating out long ago and now it is seriously unaffordable and can't be justified for any reason. It is getting to the point to also being unaffordable to eat at home!

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Eating out is expensive and the restaurants here are always busy. People are still spending their money at restaurants. Groceries are high as well.
      What an amazing find on a great turntable. Wow!
