Fantastic soul tag. Appreciate all the background info about the albums too. Must be a lot of work including the brief needle drops too. Great to see AWB featured. Love their music . Happy 2025!
I almost want to start a VC channel just to do this tag. I am a big collector of soul and funk records and i really like your channel and knowledge. Far too few soul channels on youtube and far to many with the same old classic rock records. Keep it up John.
This was fun. Here's another list: 1. Show a Saturday Night Record -- Parliament (-Funkadelic), "Mothership Connection" ("Give Up the Funk") 2. Show a Sunday Morning Record -- Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway (self-titled), featuring "Where Is the Love" 3. Show a Soul Cover Version -- Isaac Hayes, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" (or "Walk On By") from "Hot Buttered Soul" (for obvious reasons) 4. Show a Record that could be the Soundtrack to a Car Chase -- Tower of Power, "What Is Hip?" (great horn section, too, of course) 5. Show a Record Cover where the Artist just looks Too Cool -- Al Green's Greatest Hits (shirtless, with a wink and a grin -- a pose echoed by Elvis Costello on the UK cover of "This Year's Model") 6. Show a Record that features a Horn Section -- Wilson Pickett, "Land of 1,000 Dances" (Stax's Memphis Horns!) 7. Show a Soul Record by a White Artist -- Elvis Costello, "Every Day I Write the Book" (from "Punch the Clock") 8. Recommend a Soul Record to Friend who knows nothing about Soul Music -- Aretha Franklin, "I Never Loved A Man..." 9. Show a Soul Record that’s been Sampled -- James Brown's entire catalog 10. Show a Record with Sweet Harmonies -- Temptations, "My Girl" (or "Just My Imagination") 11. Show A Modern Soul Record -- Curtis Harding, "Face Your Fear" (2017 on Anti- records) 12. Pick a Soul Record for the Pub Jukebox -- The Dramatics, "Whatcha See is Whatcha Get"
Awesome Tag.... really cool questions!! Love the Car chase question and the Sampled record question! Great selections you have spotlighted for the VC! Thanks! I added my answers to your tag! Cheers!
Thank you for great choices and some good tips and insights for any of us! You made me reconsider Al Green and Gladys. Cheers and Happy NY. I love your encouragement and reassurance that vinyl tags can be done easily and be fun… but your background knowledge is something else! I’d already struggle 12:42 with Q1 - a Sat. Night Record??? Stone Junkie by Curtis Mayfield :-))) ?
Hello John! Came to your channel via Jack over at The Vinyl Voyage, who's video on this tag was a blast - as is yours! New-ish to the VC here, meeting a whole bunch of different people, and having a great time. I am all over the place genre wise, but soul/funk and this tag definitely speaks to me. I probably will make my response to this tag my first video of the new year. Have subscribed, and looking forward to checking out your video library. Happy New Year! 😎🎶🎆
John this Tag you created was outstanding brother that’s hands down my favorite Al Green record. I agree with you on that Temptations cover those was some cool dressed cats . I will definitely do this Soul Tag . I truly dig it that De La Soul sample of Sly Stone is so classic in hip hop . Happy New Year John .
Excellent Tag John! We do need more soul and funk in the VC. Out of some 380 records I bought last year I picked up about 50 or more soul / funk / disco / house records last year. Ill jump on this Tag! Great Sly Stone pick love that De La sample. Sweet Impressions was a great needle drop too. What a lead voice on that too. Cheers man!
Cheers, Jason! Yeah, it’s always fun to see soul records in the VC. Sounds like you’ve had plenty of funky pick ups this year! I’ve been listening to loads of De La Soul recently 🔥🔥🔥
Great selections John and definitely a lack of soul/funk on YT so well done to you for representing. I still need that Exit 9 LP. Hopefully one day. Cheers Nige
Very nice tag, I got to drop the first Vinyl tag and then I will do this. I was challenged to do a world tag so I may do it, still debating. Your tag is nice and easy to do, enjoying it
Great video, I love seeing soul and funk records and feel the VC on youtube is leaned a bit more towards rock, so this tag is just where it´s at for me. Keep the rare groove coming, and sending my best from Mexico.
Great picks, John! That Al Green album is a classic. Also love 'Love and Happiness' and Al's version of 'For The Good Times.' Many other great picks as well!
Great selection here John, always enjoy seeing your pulls and of course those great needle drops!!! Awwww man!!😮the 4 Ts!! Nailed that one cheers to you and blessings🙏🏻 for a very prosperous new year 🎉🥳🍻🥂🍻🥂🍻🥂🍻🍻🍻🍻💥🎆😁
100% - more soul n funk ! Absolutely brilliant picks there John. I love Off the Wall too; it just has the edge on Thriller for me. Apparently that Sly Stone album was my most streamed in 2024! Still not got a copy yet though ! Cheers

I agree and have stated many of times, we need more funk and soul on the VC. I really wish I had the nerve to make videos like you but I just can’t get myself to do it. I would give you some competition in selections but in a fun way. Great picks you showed I have just about all of them, the Sly album I need to check out. I’m glad you showed, Exit 9, super funky like Tower of Power. Happy New Year brother John..✌️✊🏻🎸
Hi John, great selections there! Not heard Exit 9 before. Best dressed for me would have to be Little Beaver from his Joey album.. especially the picture with the pipe! Best car chase Funk would be Roy Budd’s The Car Chase from Fear is The Key. Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough has to be a favourite ever intro/song. Love the Hindi version Chhupke Kann Aya by Usha Uthup. Well worth a check if you haven’t heard it….
I used to have pants like Sly is wearing on the cover of High On You. I no longer have that album. I’m sure my ex wife got it. I want the first three Average White Band albums. I can’t find good copies for a decent price. I guess I should check discogs. I can do this but I’m a bit tagged out.
@@vinylrichie007 If you still had the Sly pants, I’d insist on you wearing them in your tag response! I appreciate that the onslaught of Tag videos is a bit tiresome…
