    Unfortunately, some people really don't understand that cats are different than dogs. They call cats assholes because they don't shower you with constant attention and they expect them to have the same body language as dogs. Then they blame the cat when they get scratched when it's their fault for not understanding. Dog people and people who have never owned cats would benifit from this video.

      I think the most confusing difference between cat and dog body language is the tail. Its really hard for young kids to undertand the differences and remember them.

    • @MegaJessness
      @MegaJessness 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hamster Munchies I agree about the confusing differences, but I don't think it's all that difficult to learn. Especially for kids. It might take some getting used to if all they've had is exposure to dogs, but that's what parental guidance and supervision is for. It should be taught all around that animals in general will let you know if they want you to get close and give them some attention. Even dogs give visual cues where they want to be pet. Cats are just a little more choosy about it in general. I think my black cat, Leo, is an exception XD He loves belly rubs, belly pats, hard scritches along his face, and big hugs. You can do as many at one time as you please and he is the happiest kitty.

      I agree completely. If I HAD to choose between a dog or cat, I'd choose a dog. But only because they fit my personality. I love the showering of attention and excitement when I come home. I love training them and constantly cuddling. But, I love cats as well. I'd rather have a dog AND a cat. I hate when cat people talk crap on dogs and dog people talk crap on cats. Both are wonderful animals, just drastically different. Neither one is better than the other. They may be better for you, but not better in general. Stop the hate, dog and cat people, and respect all animals.

    • @msbunglexx
      @msbunglexx 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hamster Munchies Actually, dogs talk with their tails too, but most people just assume that if the their tale is moving it's a good thing. The position of the tail says more with a dog. A dog with a relaxed tale (not tucked between their legs or pointing straight up) is most likely to be friendly.

    My cat does the cutest thing when you hold up objects or hands to her. Everyone who know her calls this inspection. She must first smell the item, consider it carefully for a couple seconds, and then either look down in disapproval or head-bonk it if it is approved. The finger-nose thing reminded me of that. Anyway, it’s so cute! Any time she wants attention and there are items nearby, she just looks up at the local human until they hold up an item and say, “Inspeck?” And she just lights up when someone asks her to inspect something, it’s so goddamn cute

    • @kariwattsup
      @kariwattsup 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Blagaflaga Many?? How can you say that they're okay? More than likely the cats that "seem" fine without any bonding with their human because they were not born into an environment that fostered that connection, cats are extremely social. So much that they want to eat with you sleep with you play silly games with you and head butt you and are sooo happy when you get home. And some cats are emotionally disturbed and traumatized. Or lived feral and yet to understand what humans are for to them. Even the ones that are distant,trust me, the have very subtle ways not obvious to the insensitive human. It's like saying an orphan doesn't need to rely on its parent. Whatever. You're only at most 10%accurate. So there

    • @InnanetSlatt
      @InnanetSlatt 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      kariwattsup Just look at the evolution of cats vs dogs. Dogs have been selectively breed for thousands, if not tens of thousands of years, to be mild tempered, loving, and obedient. Cats, on the other hand, are a much more closely related to their wild cousins, and as a result are VASTLY more independent, don't require much affection, and simply don't often have an affinity for being that loving. I'm not saying they can't. I love cats, I'm just saying they don't usually need intimacy and it's very rare that you find one the is affectionate and desires affection as much as a dog.

    I have had cats for 4 decades and all loved lots of cuddling and petting, until Argyle the Maine Coon. Jackson, your videos have been essential. Argyle's nervous system is finely tuned such that that the slightest action on my part has a big impact on him. The finger-nose, which initially felt like deprivation, was received with purring, soft curl at the end of his tail, and rolling onto his back and exposing his tummy. He was so cute! I had to discipline myself not to do a big cuddle and instead 1) touch only his nose 2) talk softly and slowly. He loves it! Less is more.

    i work with socializing kittens. how they are handled or not handled when very little makes a big difference.
    i work every part of their bodies, particularly areas that might set them off when they are older, if they are not used to it.
    i pet them backwards, work their tail, even gently pulling it, and scratch them especially where the tail starts growing from the back. i massage all their feet on top, between their toes, stroke their noses, their whiskers, their ears, and over their eyes. it is done very gently and lovingly, and they purr through EVERY part of this. the only thing they don't love is putting my face up to theirs, but i do it anyway, again so they won't swat their new owner if that should be done by them.
    knowing many kittens will be adopted for kids, this kind of child-proofs the cats. it is also great for attuning them to being handled a lot through the adoption process, and for later, how guests might handle them, not knowing their ways.
    very effective.

    So I think the thing that I love so much about your videos is that you are showing people how to not interfere with a cat being a cat. Too many people seem to have a cat but want a dog. Cats are so immensely rewarding as companions if you simply respect them and let them be cats. The reward of a cat choosing to be around you is immense. I wish people would remember that these are not automatons that are made to respond to human stimulus in a certain way. These are sentient beings who deserve to be treated with respect and kindness.

    I've learned this with having cats all my life. One - people are too excited too much energy cats pick up on that and they don't like it. It would be like someone with all this energy in your face no you tell the person to calm down same with cats it's too much. Two -they can pick up on your moods if your relaxed and happy cats will mostly come to you then others cause they can pick up that you are in a relaxed nature and they know this person will be gentle and calm.

    • @jhowe5571
      @jhowe5571 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes, I learned that, too. When I was younger, I tried getting my grandma's cat, Meghan to come to me, with no avail! However, when I sat in a chair for a very long time and just chilled out, she would come to me and jump into my lap and I could pet her! Meghan always ran and hid, anytime little kids came into the house! Too much energy and they would be too sporatic, when trying to interact with a cat. Most cats don't like that!
      Now, I've learned all kinds of things about cat behavior, thanks to cat people like Jackson Galaxy! Now, I can get stray and even feral cats to come to me! Feral cats take a great deal of time and patience but, it can be done. Strays are easier, especially the more acclimated to human contact they are, the easier it is...

    Dude as someone with anxiety and ADHD, you just described what overstimulation feels like almost perfectly! I’ll add that all inputs (sights sounds etc) can also become jarring and even painful, and anything even close to touching you can start feeling clausterphobic, even your own body hairs.
    “Static buildup” describes that “trapped in your own skin” feeling perfectly omg!
    I’m a lot better than I used to be as a kid and teen about respecting cats’ cuddle limits, and my current kitty really loves snuggling and being pet, but she and I are still working on communicating about her stopping point. She’s really sweet and patient, so with petting to long, the only thing other than a “claws in” warning smack I’ve gotten is a “I’m gonna bite ya, move bitch!” Threat that results in a slow non- skin breaking bite if I don’t listen to her fast enough. Like a mama would give a kitten. I do my best to notice when she’s had enough before then, but if I miss that point or come back too soon after stopping there, the “final warnings” she gives definitely makes it clear she’s done. I respect the hell out of her patience, and I’m trying to make sure I respect her boundaries better.

    • @pyro-millie5533
      @pyro-millie5533 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To add to this, my cat flicks her tail when she’s calm and content, and happy to have someone nearby, like a dog does. I know of a single other cat who has this “backward” tail behavior. So sometimes its hard to tell that apart from the warning tail swish until its too late. She lets me play with her tail like a fuzzy fidget toy when she’s relaxed too, so really the only warning she gives me with it is if she starts pulling it away if I try to pet it. Sometimes really subtle ear flicks, paired with a slightly sour “mrrrrrow” but rarely ever traditional “overt” cat signs like the angry tail wag or pinned ears. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard her hiss, and only rarely have I seen her fur raise a little. Her body language is so subtle, and its readable because she expresses a lot with her big eyes, but definitely different than what’s “expected” for kitties. She also loves when I do the nose boop leading into her guiding pets. If I do any kind of full body pets, its never with a flat hand or a lot of pressure. The way I pet most critters, her included, is more of a “back scratch” - light touch that gets down into the soft floof. She loves her cheeks, chest, ears, and shoulders pet, and her tail woven through my fingers as she moves it. Such a sweetie.

  • @lisar3944
    @lisar3944 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This is such good advice. My favorite technique is to just start gently scratching my cat somewhere on his head, then I leave my hand in the same spot with my fingers making the scratching motion, and he moves his head around to get the scritches where he wants them. And no matter how you do it, as Jackson says, watching their body language is absolutely key. If you pay even the least amount of attention, you will never face a "surprise" attack again.

  • @bethmasey9478
    @bethmasey9478 6 ปีที่แล้ว +878

    It's like "whatever", because even when showing people videos like this, so many people will still blame the cat and act like cats are awful creatures and that dogs are the best even though dogs and practically any animal will behave similarly if you pet it wrong. Every animal has a preferable and a disagreeable way of being petted just like how you've kindly demonstrated here when it comes to many cats (which I thank you for btw). We just need to pay attention and know our companions more while not acting so damn selfish.

    • @jhowe5571
      @jhowe5571 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Yes, I agree. Before studying animal behavior, I would get bit by a cat or dog and not know why. Now, I know how to act around animals and have avoided getting bit. Yet, there was just twice, I nearly got bit by the neighbor's cats, Sassy. Once while holding and petting her and she warned me she didn't like the way I was petting and she was over-excited, as well. Just wanted to be fed or play. The other time, she was in my arms and I was petting her, she needed to scratch and itch and nipped at me to stop petting her so she can scratch herself. Now, I watch for little clues as to if she is distracted by something and I will stop petting her until she is ready for me to continue...

      Once I was petting a dog and and he almost bit me because I was petting him wrong. As a person who is used to petting cats all the time, I was misinformed that dogs like to be petted everywhere. I tried to gently touch his tail and his teeth instantly came out. I instantly regretted it and I honestly felt so bad since I didn't mean to make him feel uncomfortable, I love all animals. We have to learn how to respect other living beings and understand their body language. Animals attack and bite because they can't tell us that they're annoyed otherwise. Although, if you pay attention they warn us before the attack

    My cat does not know the word over simulating. She wants me to pet her 24/7. I'll lay in bed and she will lay on the side of my arm so I can scratch her neck and face without moving my arm. We will both fall asleep while I am petting her. Oh and she will eat her dinner and then I will try to eat mine and she will stare at me the whole time. She won't touch anything. Just stare. But she is 14 now and she doesn't do anything that I don't like. She is a great cat and I love her.

      actually no, it's not common knowledge that cats like belly rubs. Many cats dislike belly rubs, unlike dogs. A cat rolling over to expose its belly means it trusts you because it's exposing it's most sensitive part, if you pet them there they can see it as an attack

      LOL! I have 2 female cats, and they demand to be petted also.
      Cookie Baby shove her head into my hand, and then walks forward to get the whole back petted. Sometimes she'll be in my lap, and she turns over on her back presenting her belly. She loves being petted there and purrs the loudest when I do that.
      Itty Bitty crawls into my lap and rubs her nose with mine. Then she gets into the crook of my arm and puts her hind paws in my hand. I pet her backwards, running my fingers into her fur, and she lays her head on my shoulder purring up a storm. I love both of my cats fiercely, and they love me the same!

    There's a stray mommy cat that comes to our house to have meals. As soon as I put my hand on her head she pushes my hand telling me to pet her. She stretches her back to let me know she wants to be petted on her back. She pets me too while I'm petting her. She used to lick my hand before she got pregnant. idk why she isn't doing it now. But she's regular and I feel good that she keeps coming back for meals. I had 3 cats before. One wandered away and broke my heart. Another was killed by stray dogs. Another died of some stomach problem. I'm glad this one's not going anywhere...

    I always call the finger nose thing the "Nose Touch" and when I say it out loud my 3 cats know that it's time for petting. Just like Jackson shows they will connect their nose to the tip of my finger and then guide my hand either to their ear or under the chin. I do pet them in other ways, but the "Nose Touch" kinda let's them know right away that they are in control of the petting.

    I'm 6 years late to this but my cat doesn't have that reaction. Usually, when I pet my cat, he will settle down and relax. Sometimes he will lay down and fall asleep. Often, he will look at me with semi closed eyes and just chill out with me. However, I pay attention to my cat and know his stimulation points. Usually, the areas I pet him are places I know he likes the most. Usually, that's around his face, on his cheeks, under his neck and on the top of his head. However, I stroke him slowly on those places and don't do it for long. Basically, I took the time to get to know him. I also know when to stop based on his body language. It takes time to get to know a cat but once a relationship is built and knowing their level of comfort, things can be absolutely great between a cat and his parent (the human companion).

    I watched my cat from hell and I just discovered that you had all of these social medias so I’ve been BINGING everything. There’s one common denominator I’ve noticed, and I feel like I’ve learned that I’ve known all along, but haven’t applied enough in my kitty routine through these videos. That all you need to do is have empathy for your cat 🥲 literally just put yourself in their shoes (or lil paw paws in this case) and you’ll be shown loyalty and friendship. We all know that our feline friends are intelligent, but we seriously underestimate their emotional intelligence as well and I feel that’s where lots of people run into problems. Respect their space and treat them as you would a human friend and you have a companion until the end. 😭 Thank you for spreading your knowledge ✊🏻

  • @mksabourinable
    @mksabourinable 9 ปีที่แล้ว +85

    Also just a general rule of thumb: *NEVER PET A CAT'S BELLY.* Most of the time when I've seen or heard of someone getting attacked while petting their cat it's because the cat showed their belly to the human and the human pet the cat's belly, which resulted in an attack. Cat's show you their belly, which is their most vulnerable spot, to show that they trust you not to go in for the attack. So by petting or scratching the belly you are basically shitting on that loving gesture they just gave you, while also making them feel scared and unsafe.

    My cat's doesn't like to much petting. But loves being with me she'll sleep on me under me at the moment she's watching bird videos on TH-cam and has wrapped herself around my feet. I can't reach her but she wants to be touching me. She has never hissed lost her cool. When I pick her up she goes straight to my shoulder like a furry parrot and we'll go around the house looking at things. We play hide and seek or we'll play fetch. At night she asks for cuddles maybe 2/3 times a night sometimes she doesn't come at all but when she comes to me she'll purr and purr and pad and falls asleep next to me. Life is good and I wouldn't change anything about her.

      Manuela Machado Sounds like you have a easily over stimulated (by petting) kitty...aren't they like dogs in how certain cats with their different personalities seem to do better with certain personalities in people?
      I used to have 2 kitties myself (a tiny calico and a huge long haired white kitty) and talk about different personalities with those two but I managed to figure them out and treated them in entirely different ways when they both were with me. (my big white kitty would LOVE to sleep between my legs and the calico would always sleep on my left shoulder about 95% of the time...the other 5% was what I liked to call her "middle of the night crazy hour" lolsss) but they both slept on me in those same spots pretty much the whole time I had them and YES I Miss them both now too and now, I haven't had a new cat after them for about the last 5 or 6 years by now

And she absolutely DESPISES belly rubs so I never give her any. My second cat Jewels on the other hand is very very sweet. She LOVVESSS belly rubs. She’ll stretch out as I pet her fluffy belly and then roll back over and muzzle my hand. When she’s done being pet, she’ll simply walk away. Big difference in pettings, but I love them both so much ❤

    my cat just wants to be pet every second of every day... its so annoying. I have a roommate that pets the cat for hours then when he pushes the cat off he comes over and jumps on my lap and puts his head under my arm to be pet. We had a 7 yr old, a 6 yr old and a 5 yr old (siblings) over that had never had a cat before and they were picking him up and petting his fur backwards and holding him for a full 3 days including at night and he never ran away from them or bit them or anything. Then after they left he ran around the house crying looking for them for 2 days! He is always excited when they visit.

    My cat loves chin, neck or right above the tail. Don't pet him, scratches him. And the best part is, he knows what I like. He actially learned what I like and now he puts preasure on only my sholderblades with his little paws, moving around without claws and petting me. Now who's the owner and who's the pet?

    I adopted two rescues 8 years ago, they are both very affectionate. Henry the larger of the two will literally drop to the floor and roll belly up, his way of requesting a full hand slow throat to legs, up and down belly rub. He has never bit or scratched me, definitely one of a kind.

      I hate it when they tell you that YOU'RE PETTING your cat wrong, and then they attempt to show you, and then when your cat runs away, they blame him and say you messed him up.
      Uh, no. HE DOESN'T LIKE BEING PET AGGRESSIVELY. I'm not "wimpy petting" him, I'm just petting him normally!
      I REALLY hate when people try to hold your cat prisoner, and then try to blow you off when you tell them to let him escape when he's trying to get away. And then you're forced to get angry at them so they FINALLY let him go out of shock, and suddenly you're the oversensitive asshole.

I very gently pet his tummy, he lets out a big sigh and goes to sleep.He will stay like that for 15 0r 20 minutes, only moves if I stop petting, and then gets up, and finds something else to do.He would prefer me to pet him there, rather than his head or neck.

    Jackson Galaxy Dude, your videos should be shown to kids in elementary. It´s easy-to-acquire knowledge, and yet so many people don´t know to "read" their pet.
    I really do think that in a society with that many pets like the western society, things like this should be taught at an early age.
    It´s existential for a good bond with the animal, and happiness for both owner and pet.
    I doff my hat, guv´nah!

      Little kids get scratched & learn to stop annoying the cat. Adults get scratched & then want to teach the cat how to behave. Or see the kid get scratched & want the cat declawed. Just raise kids alongside animals from a young age, they learn better that way.

    As in almost every one of Jackson's videos, it's all about learning your cat and the techniques he uses to communicate with you. I'm raising a young kitten right now and one of the things I had to recognize is, while he's a very affectionate kitten, he DOES NOT like to have his fur stroked for extended periods. So I've trained myself to scratch his ears, or rub his cheeks for a very short time (less than 30 seconds) and then stop. He used to just get up and move away if I pet him too long. Now he's much more comfortable sitting in my lap for extended periods....
    Pay attention! Your cat is trying to tell you what he likes and what he doesn't!

    Now its like once I start she never wants me to stop. :O Im guessing its because she is an outside cat so she doesn't get that much human attention.

      I'm with you. When I was a kid our family took in a stray cat that came to our neighborhood. I learned what the tail swashing meant. I noticed he liked to rub against our hands with his mouth and sometimes his back. I will say, when we got out of the shower he loved to be pet, but he would usually play "Gotcha" at that time too. I think it was because we had washed off his scent, or the smell of the soap put him into a weird mode.

      if you come out of a shower, and the cat starts licking, biting a little, and using its claws a bit aswell, it's not necessarily a bad sign, or a sign of dislike.. in my case, it's due to my cat going wild over the scent, and it simply cannot get enough of it (i tried the soap on an empty cardboard toilet roll, and the same thing happend, aswell as 10 minutes of licking)

      Tom Long Every one of my cats for 40+ years has learned to love their belly rubbed. It's true, it's not something cats do normally because it's something earned to the owner, like trust or respect with humans. To have a cat show it's belly willingly is the greatest honor they can bestow on their owner. But again, it's something earned, not just given away naturally.

    I watched this video years ago in preparation of adopting a kitten (unexpected and unwanted by her mother's humans) and the results speak for themselves. My dearest little black panther has never scratched or bitten me, and vets have called her "an absolute delight" because she's so easy to work with. She voices her discontent with veterinary procedures, but she never lashes out. I wholeheartedly believe that's purely because she realizes that voicing such discontent is all she needs to do to stop unwanted behaviour that isn't absolutely required.
    I just wanted to say, thank you for planting the seed that allowed a relationship based on mutual trust and understanding to blossom between me and my cat.

      You're right. I think folks are just agreeing with you? Also, cats who've been declawed develop pain in their bodies because missing the end of kitty's toes causes improper walking and it affects how their whole body moves ---compensating for this (walking with more weight forced onto the rear of the foot) causes unbalanced muscle and connective tissue function and chronic pain. Keep spreading the word. Cheers!:)

    The best cure for preventing static electricity build up while petting a cat or other fluffy animal is to ground your self to the cat by gently touching one of the cat's paws while petting. (maybe not all cats let you do this though. but mine is fine with it. You'll have better luck with their rear paws as they are paying more attention to their front paws most of the time) Of coarse this is only practical if they are laying down with their paws exposed. Do not attempt to lift their feet if they are in a sitting position. Most cats don't let you do that obviously. :P
    This especially helps with very fluffy cats as the static builds up more more easily with them and the last thing you want is discharges to occur near their head which WILL happen. Especially near their ears. Gently touching an area of exposed skin (most commonly the paws) prevents separation of electric charge when petting a fluffy cat since charge is dispersed through that contact instead of building up and then discharging at a random point in their fur which is very uncomfortable for them. Basic science 101. :D
    I generally avoid long pet strokes and go more for shorter ones to also mitigate this. I just naturally paid attention to how my cat responded to me petting her over the years, so now I just don't have issues with it. She seeks out my attention anytime I spend time in the livingroom. :D
    I guess I just ended up doing some of your tips out of common sense. :D

      All animals or just cute animals and pets? Do you eat dead bodies of farm animals? I wouldnt call that gentle

    • @Destructocorps
      @Destructocorps 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ThatDamnBlonde yes all animals. And could you please refrain from making all vegetarians and vegans look bad? Whatever your reason for not eating meat, 'it's not gentle to eat dead things' shouldn't be it. You can do disgusting things to dead things, but gentle on something that can love and feel is a whole different ballgame to gentle on an inanimate object.

    Let the animal come to you, let them take the initiative. That way I am not imposing myself on them, the animal can tell us what they want.

    i love my cat so much, learning more everyday to be a better friend and caregiver to them. thank you for your videos, not a lot of people understand cats as much as they do other pets and thats one reason i only have cats cause i can relate lol
