I've been seeing some very insightful comments with regards to the difference in price that I mentioned, and I want to address them. First of all, many people have pointed out that the prices I quoted for the UK included the 20% VAT in addition to the 10% tariff. Meanwhile, the Chinese prices do not, and electric vehicles are currently exempt from similar sales taxes here in China. These prices, do not, however, include any other subsidies offered by the government, and pointing to subsidies involved in the production of the vehicle isn't relevant to this discussion, as those savings could just as easily be passed on to consumers abroad as they could domestically. First of all, this was not an intentional decision to deceive the viewer on my part. Chock it up to the fact that I'm American, and unlike in Europe, our companies aren't required to include all relevant taxes in their pricing, so it didn't occur to me to consider this factor. That's my mistake, and I apologize. As such, a more accurate comparison would require us to compare the UK prices minus VAT and tariff with the Chinese prices quoted. Taking VAT and tariff into account, the prices would be roughly £42,000 (single motor) and £46,900 (dual motor) for a Polestar 4 in the UK. That's clearly much closer to the price of the Chinese models, which are equivalent to about £33,000 and £41,000. As I mentioned at the end of the video, those prices have since been dropped significantly, so they are now equivalent to £26,300 and £37,300. That's a difference of about £15,700 and £9,600 vs the UK price. I understand that there are other factors, such as shipping and the fact that, unlike China, Europe isn't a unified market, so it costs more to market a vehicle, but I don't think such factors can explain that big of a price difference, do you? Ultimately, I stand by my belief that competition is a major factor in the way these cars are priced in China vs the rest of the world, but I realize that my failure to address the issues above worked to weaken that argument, and I appreciate those of you in the comments who offered genuine, helpful critiques and additional information. I hope you were still able to enjoy the video, and I thank you for choosing to watch our content!

Polestar is a Swedish company (big part is indeed owned by Geely, the "mother company" of Volvo, but the rest is publicly traded under the ticker PSNY on the New York Stock Exchange). They will produce Polestar 3 in the USA (South Carolina). Polestar 4 for the US market is planned to be produced in South Korea.
Which is precisely why they can’t. Ford and Chevy got pissed after Honda and Toyota took their sales away from them all those years ago, they won’t let the same happen with the Chinese.
Also the European/UK quoted prices include mandatory SALES TAX (waived on EVs in China), which adds ~20% to the (post-import-and-shipping) price. Quoted price also includes minor fees totaling around 110 GBP for license plate and first registration). However, your point about competition explains all of the rest of the price difference. Shipping is roughly 1k euros (900 GBP) and import tax to EU/UK adds 10%. So 33,000 GPB base price in China would go to 34,000 after shipping, 37,400 after import tax, and then 44,880 GBP after the 20% sales tax. The rest is overpricing due to lack of competition, as you say.
Thanks for this, I have just ordered this car in the UK, went for the long range dual motor with Plus, Pro and Pilot packs, plus Nappa in Zinc and the electrochrome roof, no LiDar option here either.
I heard there's some kind of recipcrocal mechanism that may allow Polestar to reduce or avoid tariffs on the P4, because the P3 is going to be built in South Carolina and shipped abroad. Hopefully that would allow them to get it out sooner than 2H 2025!
Yes, they can and will export Polestar 3:s made in America to Europe. Which lets them reduce the tariffs they have to pay on imported cars from China. This will help improve their profitability of the Polestar 2 which will continue to be made in China - and the Polestar 4 that will most likely begin deliveries with cars from China, to then gradually shift over to Korean production for the US market in 2025.
Pretty fun to finally see it not in storm trooper scheme white. This really helps to conceptualize it more, and I see more Jaguar I-Pace than Porsche Cayenne shape and size.

I greatly admire China's progress and development in the automobile sector. What's more, my next vehicle will be from a Chinese company, but from a private company. Despite that, I must admit that I don't like the fact that there is an oversupply of brands and models from state-owned companies (for example, Chery, has many brands and some with very bad names), I think they do a lot of damage to other private competitors with a lot of potential. I am very saddened by the news about Hiphi stopping their production, their vehicles are spectacular. I was also very saddened by Byton's case. If these conglomerates invested in start-ups instead of launching their own brands, it would be much better.
As far as communication with others users is concerned. There is no need for a rear window for that. You can use other methods used by van or truck drivers that also do not have rear window. Such as for example the turn signal. When you want to say thank you to somebody you just quickly make a left then right blinking a few times. The other user will understand. A hand outside the window can also do the job but it’s less practical.
They could use a Nintendo 3DS-like stereoscopic screen for the rear view. The later models even had eye-tracking to make sure the 3D effect keeps stable.
amazing price with 100kwh battery. Many people in the comments refute your reason why pricing is much lower in China. If it was government subsidies, then why not just pocket the extra profit. EV competition in China is just intense which is the reason they can come up with great design, features, and specs at a rapid rate (almost each month there is a better EV to buy). You simply pocket government money as extra profit if there is little competition. These people pickup up Western Mainstream media hate on Chinese EV subsidies. MSM hates it to support ageing legacy auto and because this correct way to spend or overspend government money.
Speaker in the headrest is like a cheat. Imagine going to concert and all the sudden the take the speaker next to your seat. I wonder how it effect the overall audio quality and if we can disable that headrest speaker.
I am very much looking forward to the new zeekr 001 video, the design is my favorite, and 0~400m only need 10.8s, that's amazing, the only thing I want to know is by using the new air suspension can new 001 beat the old 001 or even Polarstar4 🤔
When I saw old 001 at first eyes at shopping mall, I immediately fall in love with this car 😍, but I need study abroad this year to Australia😢, my money is ready.
And how do ethan you think about the parent company Geely. Volvo, Polarstar, Link&co, Zeekr, Galaxy, Lotus, Smart, Jiyue. The sub-brand are killing themselves, why Geely allowed Zeekr001 battle with polarstar4 🤔
The Polestar 4's seat belts are "Swedish Gold." They appeared on Polestar Volvos. In fact, this applies to any Volvo or Polestar with those seat belts. And do you have a link of who tuned the Polestar 4? Because, as far as I know, all Polestars are tuned in Europe. The Polestar 5 is being tuned in England. This car looks like a raised sedan in terms of lines. But I understand it is big in the metal. I like your reviews. For me, this is a Polestar-fied Zeekr001. Nice car. But I prefer the more Volvo-based Polestar designs like the 2, 3, 5. The 6 is OK but I don't see the need for a Roadster and think Polestar should update the 2 to a new model (probably call it a 7). I'd also say Polestar is a Swedish company. They're very much like Volvo, only sportier. But same philosophy and since they've tuned Volvos from the 1990s, they really base most of what they are on Volvos while sometimes using shared Geely bits to bring down costs.
You’re right about the seat color, would be much more accurate to call them gold. I’m sorry I can provide a link for the tuning of the suspension, this was based on conversations with people within Polestar here in China. I was careful to say that it was done by a team based in China, not necessarily a team made up only of Chinese engineers. I’m sure there were experienced foreign engineers involved. Yes, Polestar is a Swedish brand according to its own lore, but I’m just pointing out that it is majority owned by Geely (50.5%), the rest belonging to Volvo.
@@Wheelsboy Volvo has sold much of its shares to Geely and now retain about 18 percent. The reason I say it is Swedish is because it is headquartered and managed there and of course Polestar was founded in Sweden. I like Geely's style of ownership. They tend not to change established brands and infuse them with cash. Of course the brands will use common parts to cut down on costs but will also have their own parts to create their own feel. Now, although Volvo has sold the shares, they still are very close to Polestar in terms of shared development of Polestar cars and servicing them. If you look close at Polestar there are so many Volvo parts in most of them. Even the paint colors and interior materials are almost exactly the same as Volvos. So, Volvo and Polestar will remain close brands. I think the Polestar 4 has a chance to be Polestar's best seller since it has the crossover height and is priced in a bracket that is more accessible to many buyers than the Polestar 3 flagship crossover.. Great job on the review.
It has a gage cluster... Somehow it would bothered me if it didn't have one even if I find the lack of gage cluster stupid and dangerous. Polestar is Volvo's expérimentale brand. But the fact that the EX30 doesn't have one baffles me. For a brand so proud of its safety credentials.
Iam usually not a fan of these " double headlights", although this is one of the better looking vehicles with it. The inside could have used more Volvo nordic cold styling. Also these stickers on the side that say how much money you spend look cheap.
I'm sure this is going to be the future trend while the energy stored in a battery will always be at a premium... but this looks JUST like a model Y from the side. It's not a criticism, it's an observation. I'd sooner buy a Fiat than a Chinese car. My reservations about the Chinese are that severe. This should have been a Volvo though, and it's very pretty.
uk model 3 starts at 40k gbp, model y 45k gbp. pretty stiff competition. polestar just can't produce as cheaply. uk price includes vat and shipping fees, just like tesla; they just aren't as competitive.
Another excellent review of an interesting new vehicle. As you explained, the Polestar vehicles are obscenely expensive over here in continental Europe. A slighlty more affordable vehicle which is hardware wise almost identical Geely daughter Zeekr 001. How would you rate the Polestar 4 to the 001 in terms of driving dynamics? Note: the 'facelifted' 001 for model year 2024 outdoes this Polestar by having 800V charging platform and significantly more power (580kW).
I think its awesome but not sure the company will survive till 2025 to become profitable. But i admit like the interior better than tesla. Because of hud , stalks and speedometer up front
The basic-heading PPP for each pair of economies can be computed directly by taking the geometric mean of the price relatives between them for the two kinds of rice. This is a bilateral comparison. The PPP between economies B and A can be computed indirectly: PPP C/A × PPP B/C = PPP B/A. Take Switzerland: there they earn a lot but also have hundreds erotic expenses. In China they earn less but also pay less. If western Europeans and US Americans would get Chinese prices that literally would be parasitic leeching on China. If Chinese directly buy something from Western Europe or the US on the other hand you'd demand that they pay US and western European prices. The only way to be really cheaper than the competition is to have a higher degree of automation, robotics, AI and a higher vertical integration - if your tech is only similar to the competition. To be more expensive you need tech no one else has yet.
I really like your content, but when it comes to pricing you are SO wrong. You were on the right track, but instead of following that logic you went completely left field. Here are the main reason EVs are cheaper in China vs other markets, like the ones you mentioned: 1) Shipping, this is small cost, but with dock fees etc this can quickly accumulate to a few thousand per car. 2) Tarifs, as you said the UK (and most of Europe) has 10% tarif on Chinese cars. 3) VAT, Europe has between 19-25% VAT on EVs. In China EVs are VAT excempt. 4) Subsidies, Chinese automakers are given subsidies by the Chinese government specifically to lower EV prices in the country. 5) One market, bigger volumes, less cost. Europe consists of many smaller countries with local regulations and the need for local marketing. All of this results in Chinese EVs being much cheaper in China than in Europe. I made a video about this on my channel for those interested :)
Thank you for your comment and for providing some more valuable context to this discussion! I have pinned a lengthy response to yours and other people's comments above. Hope you were still able to enjoy the rest of the review!
Mobileye is simply an uncompetitive company. Their autopilot solution is 100% bullshit, and they work on this very slowly. If Mobileye's Autopilot and Lidar are optional on your EV, don't waste any money on them.
exactly a lot of reports Lidar has many critical issues and wont ever make it worldwide. Polestar know this and left it out. Even Elon admits that self driving programs have their errors, limits and cant make all the right decisions
The interior is a bit of a letdown in design. The screen is a nice size but it's kind of trapped between the "Here's a big screen!" minimalism of the Tesla, and something that's part of the dash like a Mercedes. The small Volvo SUV has a better looking interior. I could also really use a bit bit of color. This isn't a Polestar exclusive issue, but when the console doesn't have anything mechanical in it, why make this giant open area that's hard to reach, and then build a wall around the driver with the dash? Just to get a cup holder? I prefer the solution with a large, closed storage area, and less of a border between driver and passenger. This looks a bit cramped, even though I'm sure it isn't. 3 miles/Kw/hr is also nothing amazing on the efficiency front. The Model Y, for example, can go this far with a 20% smaller battery.
@@faithosadebe5293 I don't understand your point, the range of this is the same situation. It's that longer distance if you drive it to 0% in the Polestar. You've just spent more money to recharge it each time. My point is that the Model Y, regardless of if it's 80%-30% or 100-0, goes as far with a smaller battery because it is more efficient. That also makes it lighter, which means it uses less battery just to lug the battery around... So, respectfully, I don't see your point or why it's so clever that you're laughing at your joke?

Good review. Like the design of this car especially in white. Thanks for sharing.
WheelsBoy is such a lovely dude
Don't forget that driving on the wrong side of the road also adds up in price when you you have to move the wheel, infotainment and glovebox
What a nice car ! Can t wait to see the pricing in Canada .
MSM hates it to support ageing legacy auto and because this correct way to spend or overspend government money.
fav thing is the yellow seatbelt
I'm a big fan as well.
impressive car
Awesome video ❤
Speaker in the headrest is like a cheat. Imagine going to concert and all the sudden the take the speaker next to your seat. I wonder how it effect the overall audio quality and if we can disable that headrest speaker.
the tech is a let-down. pretty astonishing to hear about the poor driver-assistance system and the ping-ponging LKA.
that will just be resolved on an update no way they will go worldwide with a shocking driver assist setup
Those pants 🔥
Also for the UK market and a few others need Right Hand Drive and different Infotainment software. That must be costly.
LOVE the Polestar 4.
It's kinda cringe when the 2024 Zeekr 001 get 800v while its ''premium'' version Polestar 4 fianlly started selling with 400v. Love the design tho.
Hei boooi! I need those wheels for sure 😅😅
Not a fan of the Polestar brand especially this model but it is good to see more Chinese cars in the export market
Pls review the Nissan Sylphy e-power (1.2 lit NA + single speed transmission). Appreciated!
I guess they only review Chinese cars
Hello, nice Video, is the Color of the Car „Storm“? Many thanks😊
Review coming soon!
Exciting times. I am glad my country is not a manufacturer of cars, so most probably this will be coming. Consumer rejoice!
전기차 모델중에 최고인듯...~
It has a gage cluster... Somehow it would bothered me if it didn't have one even if I find the lack of gage cluster stupid and dangerous. Polestar is Volvo's expérimentale brand. But the fact that the EX30 doesn't have one baffles me. For a brand so proud of its safety credentials.
I despise the gauge cluster in the 3/4. The p2 gauge is nicer.
Nice MarineMaster
Try flashing your hazard lights to say thanks! Been doing it for years
Can we all agree that it shares simile with the zeekr 001 both inside and outside
20% cut !! So the cheapest now costs 26.5k pounds ! Less than half UKs 60k. If I didn't live in a RHD country I'd be tempted to do a personal import.
Finally nice to see more English speaking reviews. Thank you!
Somewhat surprised they didn't go with a different name, given the superstitions around 4 in China.
Iam usually not a fan of these " double headlights", although this is one of the better looking vehicles with it. The inside could have used more Volvo nordic cold styling. Also these stickers on the side that say how much money you spend look cheap.
Superb video. I just subscribed. Can’t wait to check out your other vids!! Great work. 👏
love US car prices; constant reminder we're trapped in a system that drains you financially
Sometimes I can't tell if you talking sarcatically or not:P Either ways it's fun to watch.
Thank you for this great review, @Wheelsboy! Which color has the car that you tested?
Storm ?
800V architecture should definitely be
The dead pedal comment...I have the same issue in my Volvo V60. It is a weird angle
Sweden represent!
The key point of the video : communication is important :)🤣🤣🤣
I'm sure this is going to be the future trend while the energy stored in a battery will always be at a premium... but this looks JUST like a model Y from the side. It's not a criticism, it's an observation. I'd sooner buy a Fiat than a Chinese car. My reservations about the Chinese are that severe. This should have been a Volvo though, and it's very pretty.
Turn the hazard light on and off as a thank you gesture. That's how truckers and school bus drivers been doing ✌️
Could you review the Xiaomi SU7 please? Thank you.
Nice review! Could you also pls test the new Xiaomi SU7 Max? I believe that's a car that many ppl are very interested in :-)
uk model 3 starts at 40k gbp, model y 45k gbp. pretty stiff competition. polestar just can't produce as cheaply. uk price includes vat and shipping fees, just like tesla; they just aren't as competitive.
why do you need to have leather seats to get ventilated, aka cooled, seats?
Range is to low and I need that back window for the communications.
The tuning is based on different standard. Should drive and feel by yourself.
@@s.d.918I have driven the 001, but not Polestar since not available. Hence my question to Wheelsboy..
@@GTI_CHHA My bad. I thought you were in China cos not many people know about zeekr out there..
So why DID they ditch the rear window?
How can I go to China and buy the I want from there !!!!?
Don’t believe you are correct re the suspension tuning given Joakim is all over the testing up in sweden
Afternoon mate
The video is good but that sky looks terrible 😷
If the rear camera gets covered with mud or snow, is there a feature to clean the rear camera without getting out of the car?
The same feature that normally cleans your rear window called a sponge or brush
That price difference is really off putting
that car is 45.000 pounds in denmark, the land with 150%tax on cars :P
What about Polestar phone is it included?
Polestar will be out of business long before they gain traction in Europe and America. The prices are too high for a new brand
Not sure why the real world range isn’t greater, less than the upgraded Polestar 2 whereas the P4 has a significantly bigger battery
I think its awesome but not sure the company will survive till 2025 to become profitable. But i admit like the interior better than tesla. Because of hud , stalks and speedometer up front
100 kw battery range and sleek design to me the range is poor. Here in the uk it’s 60 k. You can get a Mecan ev Porsche for 68k
Want one! 😍😍😍👍👍
S T U N N I N G ❤
I really like your content, but when it comes to pricing you are SO wrong. You were on the right track, but instead of following that logic you went completely left field. Here are the main reason EVs are cheaper in China vs other markets, like the ones you mentioned:
1) Shipping, this is small cost, but with dock fees etc this can quickly accumulate to a few thousand per car.
What color is that? Electron or Storm?
Storm
Flash the hazards to say thanks to courteous motorists. It’s kilo- metre as in kilowatt, kilojoule etc. not key- lometre. An American thing I suppose.
Model Y can only travel 290 miles the LR RWD with the bigger battery😂😂 if you drive it to 0%. If not, 270miles it the real range on 70mph.
@@davids1816 laughing at mine own joke??.. Just letting you know both choice of cars is silly and overpriced..
