  • Let's listen to and talk about the Safi'Jiiva theme from Monster Hunter World Iceborne! I've (unfortunately) never played Iceborne so it was a ton of fun to listen to this for the first time. The part where Safi'Jiiva gets fixed on a player is so intense, it really made me want to play Iceborne just so I could experience this music in context!

      when safi focuses on you and the music narrows, you can really feel the intensity of safi's stare; in a way, as safi focuses on you, so the music focuses on safi. That intensity and the muffling of several of those more triumphant parts really makes you understand that this is no longer a four players vs. one monster hunt because it's now a duel, just you and safi alone in safi's magnificent arena, an ant and an emperor.

    Something worth noting about how this functions mid-game:
    Safi'jiva is a unique fight. There are three stages to it. Each stage has an energy meter Safi'jiva will draw from to heal itself. In each individual attempt, it will sap a certain amount of energy before moving to the next zone, and the game "remembers" the amount of energy Safi drains.
    Every time you enter the quest, you have twenty minutes to do as much damage as possible before it leaves and you have to do it again. As you do this, it will gradually deplete more and more energy from the reserves. It will only drain energy from a level a limited number of times before moving on to the next, but usually, you wouldn't pass level 2 in your first attack without serious effort. Drain is increased depending on parts broken, and overall rewards are increased depending on energy drained.
    Even if you get completely murdered, that's fine. As long as you've forced it to deplete some energy, you've contributed to the raid (oh yeah, the progress of everyone in the Gathering Hub is compiled together until one of the parties gets a kill).
    This brings in the context of the final theme. You've cornered the beast. If you can simply just keep up the pressure before the time runs out, you'll win. But don't forget, this creature can and will maul you if it gets the chance. Either you slay it, or it runs off again. The theme has parts of heroism and victory, but there are parts that apply a ton of pressure as well.
    Overall, it is an incredible theme for one certain Gentle Simple Sailor.

    I never actually noticed the music changes when Safi is focusing on you. That is really creepy the way they muffle and distort the music.
    Lore wise, Safi/Xeno is some sort of elder dragon that feeds on the bioenergy of other elder dragons. The more energy it consumes the more powerful it gets. The way it consumes the bioenergy is through a specialized organ in its chest. If you look at Xeno you can see that its chest is bright glowing red. This is because the organ gives off a massive amount of heat when operating. The organ is also responsible for circulating bioenergy throughout the body. Basically it functions like a heart, but with energy instead of blood.
    Considering that Safi is an older, much more powerful Xeno, it is no surprise you can hear its heartbeat. The organ in its chest would be packed with bioenergy it has absorbed over time. When Safi focuses on one player it releases more energy, so the "heart" organ needs to work harder and pump more energy through the body. To think that they even represented that in the music is crazy.

    • @savitar31
      @savitar31 3 ปีที่แล้ว +52

    8:43 this is my favorite part of the whole soundtrack. That buildup followed by the *BWAAAAAAAAAAAA* absolutely FLOORED me the first time I heard it, and I still get goosebumps hearing it now.
    The initial windup feels like a buildup of rage. Once this rage reaches its apex, it culminates in a massive output of menace. And in the gameplay, this manifests as a desire to target and eliminate YOU.

  • @Sleksin
    @Sleksin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Safi's theme goes hard with the target effects. Particularly in the final phase, with the heartbeat/percussion/distorted noises interfering with the track and subduing the heroic parts. It's like the music is tearing itself apart in trying to convey the significance of being the focus of such an intense monster.
    It would also be neat to see your view on the Sapphire of the Emperor, how it cuts out everything (except for the heartbeat when targeted, I think).

  • @Admiralkirk95
    @Admiralkirk95 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Never faced Safi myself but his theme continues to trend of putting the hunter into the theme at times that World/Iceborne likes to do. And in this is even interacts with the hunters as well. Becoming muffled as it targets you specifically. Brief moments of herioc sounding notes really throw the hunter into the theme as a small but heroic defiance against this otherwordly threat that is utterly terrifying and powerful.
    But the final spot is far more heroic, as you rise to the challenge and his strength.
    I'm sure someone already answered this but yes, it's heavily hinted at the Xeno and Safi are creatures from outer space, parasitic perhaps due to them sucking the energy from fallen creatures to power themselves. The "Saphire star' is mentioned often in the game to 'guide you'and was what originally guided the commision to the new world I believe. This saphire star ends up being Xeno, but it's later revealed Safi was another comet that crashed in another region and was much more concealed and able to reach it's adult state. The final area of the Safi fight also is surrounded in what seems to be eggs like the one Xeno emerges from implying more are on the way and Safi is protecting them to perhaps invade the planet or something.(or simply to explain where Safi's keep coming from? idk)

    When the heart beat percussions come in, I get legit flashbacks and start lowkey panicking! In my group, I always volunteer to be bait and every time the heartbeat sounds kick in, no matter how many times I've fought Safi, it always puts me on edge! Effective stuff!

  • @Chireiya

    If you played World, you should recognise some of the melodies (the choir for one), since they're call backs to Xeno'Jiiva's theme.
    While Safi isn't my favorite theme, one part that made it stand it out to me is not the music itself but the choice to silence it completely when safi drops the sapphire star bomb. It's incredibly impactful!
    That said, thanks four your insights and obligatory request to do Alatreon, Arch-tempered Velkhana (maybe compare it with normal Velk?) and Magnamalo! Also wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts on Shara Ishvalda, since that's quite a different style imho.

    Ahh man the heartbeat always gets me pumped when listening to these pieces. And the sudden near silence when Safi'Jiiva performs Sapphire of the Emperor is just so suspensful. It almost sucks in all the sound of the area except for the attack's FX. (Video for the attack: th-cam.com/video/d92Y1_VChh8/w-d-xo.html )
    Also for some trivia, these two pieces are titled as: The Emperor Emerges From Under the Veil (phase 1) and For the Emperor's Amusement (final phase). Course, I initally thought it was in terms of Safi finding it funny but no. This final battle is entertaining, it has been pushed down to that last area, but Safi finds this amusing, entertaining. And that is honestly terrifying since it seems so capable of intelligence as an Elder Dragon, but also as a potential otherworldly creature.
    Have many people asked for Alatreon's theme? It's an interesting one I think for the time signature differences. Definitely one to keep in mind!

  • @rwberger6
    @rwberger6 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The melody being sort of mysterious and out of normal tune makes sense for xeno/safi. The whole point of their species in the game is that they're alien and not part of the natural order of the new world. They're like parasites leeching off the lands rich bio-energy, upsetting the ecosystems and causing the monsters to behave erratic with the whole games theme being about balance with nature. Xeno and safi disrupt the balance and Safi's theme reflects that.

    'Xeno' simply means 'Alien', and 'Jiva' is the (Hindu, I believe) word for 'Soul' or 'Life'.
    'Safi' is likely 'Ssafi' from Arabic, generally meaning 'Pure'.
    Xeno'Jiiva - Alien Life (Whether it's actually alien, as in from space, or just looks so odd to MH's researchers, is unclear. Its birthing process is certainly unique, though, making it abnormal before even hatching.)
    Safi'Jiiva - Pure Life (This is most obviously in reference to Safi'jiiva's power over bioenergy, essentially the life force of the world itself.)
    You're right about the heartbeat, I believe it to be Safi's, given its theme is literally life itself. (That or it's the Hunter's, displaying skill in the manner of tempering one's heartbeat even during such an intense battle.)
    Finally, as it sadly wasn't in the video (Or maybe I just missed it), Safi's ultimate - Sapphire of the Emperor - causes the music to softly cut out in the middle of the battle, replacing it with a slow descending sound, going into a silence-stopping gong, which is an absolutely insane thing to experience.

You destroyed the ecosystem. You destroyed the elders. Heck, you killed almost everything you saw. Now safi WILL DESTOY YOU. Maybe it was sent to bring balance the music makes you slowly realize it symbolizing the hunters figuring it out when it’s to late

    “Kulve Taroth” has an amazing theme too, I’d love to see you break that one down! Like Safi, Kulve’s theme has different music depending on the phase of the fight:
    Phase 1: “Pursuit theme”. The player is tasked with tracking down and fighting a huge dragon. It’s beautiful, gigantic, and covered in shimmering gold. The player chases it through tunnels and caves, trying to get closer. All the time, Kulve Taroth ignores the player, like they’re an annoying fly.
    Phase 2: “Confrontation”. Kulve Taroth has had enough. She turns on the player and begins to attack. Breathing fire, swinging her massive tail, throwing her massive weight down to crush the fighters. The fight gets tense and difficult here.
    Phase 3: “Fury”. Now cornered with nowhere else to go, Kulve Taroth goes nuclear. She spits gouts of fire at the walls and ceilings, causing red-hot gold to drip from every surface. She covers the floor in a sea of fire and goes bezerk trying to annihilate each and every one of her attackers. Everything is burning and boiling and everything is scary.
    (Optional 4th theme: “Victory”. The player is able to beat Kulve Taroth, and claim the golden loot she guarded. This plays at the end of the quest if the player wins)
    Love all your vids man!

    Everything about both Safi and Xeno is all about that idea of life dawning anew, but at the same time, raw unyielding and disturbing power, even Safi´s title, the red dragon, red, contrary to black dragons like fatalis, black representing death, and terror and destruction, Red is a colour that represents life, and sometimes health, which lines up perfectly with the theme of saif and xeno being that they are literally a formation of the combined life from the energy of elder dragons, but on top of representing life, they are alien in nature, unlike anything else and are capable of bringing mass destruction if they so choose. even xeno jiivas theme is called ¨life springs anew¨ their species is a representation of both new life, and destruction and that is portrayed perfectly in both of their themes, xeno more so leaning on the idea of life and safi adding that disturbing factor of ¨what is it becoming¨ absolutely magnificent, great job capcom.

Now that you said in 10:22 it was [Safi'jiiva Heartbeat], it kinda makes perfect sense because on the Final Phase/Deepest Floor, there is something called [Supercritical State] where Safi'jiiva is enraged and its body turn Bright Red. It makes sense to says that "His heartbeat getting stronger as it making Safi temporarily more Powerful."
    I kinda always realize the heartbeat at the final phases/deepest floor, that's why I'm saying that. Now I kinda wants to confirm everything I hear, but Safi'jiiva Siege just ended this week :p

    I love how the theme perfectly reflects the emotions of the player and even mimics some of the attacks, like the buildup in the targeting variant imitates the kind used when Safi uses his "hide or die" attack (8:54) (9:13). At first the player is curious and probably pretty confidant, then you notice the time limit, and things get tense, with the occasional heroic dodge or knockdown, but on the whole the tension is constant, racing against the clock. Until you get to the bottom, it's now or never, let's go, things are still nerve-wracking as you race the clock but you have a chance now, you can win, and hopefully you do.

    Another fun interpretation of the heartbeat: Perhaps its not just that Safi’Jiiva’s heartbeat is so loud that you can hear it outside the body, but maybe its that the Hunter is so exhilarated and terrified from Safi’s gaze being so focused on them, that they’re also starting to be more aware of Safi itself. And it feels like a metronome ticking too, which only adds to the tension, kinda like hearing the clock with the teacher’s eyes on you during a difficult test.

    I think a very fitting way to look at this theme is from Safi's point of view. There's a trait carried by a few monsters in the series and that's an ego. Safi thinks very highly of it's self so it's theme being very heroic instead of sinister in the beginning is very fitting as it sees it's self as the protagonist who will surely win this fight with ease. As the fight goes on the music gets more frantic and panicked as the possibility of losing gets closer and closer.
    There's other things that work towards this, like his huge bomb called Sapphire of the Emperor. SoE is an instant kill 1 shot on anyone caught in it's blast, the moment he drops the bomb the music cuts because Safi believes the fight is over, he won, no one can survive this. Once the blast clears and he sees everyone still standing because they took cover though the music immediately kicks in again.
    The other thing is when you draw his Enmity. You're right, the heart beat is not some one who is scared, it's the heartbeat of some one that is focused, Safi is focused entirely on you and only you.

    I'd love to see you break down Namielle's theme "Morning Star of the Dark Tide" or Velkhana's theme "Splendiferous Silver Sovereign." Both are amazing tracks and some of my personal favorites. Great video as always man.

    Loved this, the part just over half way through that switches, sounds so hellish and demonic. And later how the heroism starts to kick in. This really emphasizes the balance of power shifting. Thank you Davi!

    Ive not ran Safi in almost a year and listening to this brought back the awe inspiring chills of that experience and everything you described, the emotion of terror and mystery and hopefully heroism all play into the fight as you chase her deeper and deeper into the canyon and she becomes more and more dangerous, then at the lowest tier when we are against the clock and we can see that she is at her most vulnerable and yet at her most volatile there is a sense of impending success to fell this amazing beast.

    Something I like about safi'jiiva's theme, when he focuses on a hunter and it reaches the climax in the first phase, it sounds like a clock rapidly ticking away, referencing the short time limit or the anticipation of the Sapphire of the Emperor attack. Either way, when fighting safi you're fighting the clock as well
