The two measures of 6/4 followed by 4/4 are really special to me because it's a clear throwback to the Verdant Hills battle music.
That chaotic nature is probably there less for the sake of Fatalis, and more to capture the intensity of fighting your first 'big monster' - even if it was probably just a Yian Kut-Ku.
I really like this, though, because to me it seems to represent how it all comes full circle and how Fatalis represents a return to chaos and the unknown. It seems silly to compare Fatalis to something like a Yian Kut-Ku or a Rathian, but by the time you reach Fatalis it's safe to say you're a top class hunter and you (or your character) are starting to come to grips with the world and the nuance of hunting. Then, you're confronted by this beast of mythical proportions that seems to throw all of that out the window. Just as you become comfortable with your role in the food chain, there are suddenly stakes again. I feel like that Verdant Hills battle theme motif exists in Fatalis' own score to make the hunter reflect on how far they've come but also to recapture that sense of wonder and unfamiliarity right when you were just starting to think you've finally come to grips with everything this world has to offer.
It's not that the chaos doesn't fit Fatalis, because of course it does, but I think it represents way more than that.
Also, I never noticed the Kokoto homage and I'm super glad you pointed that out.
I swear this theme just grows on me more and more every time I hear it.

I love how fatalis theme was a more aggressive remix of rathalos' theme (forest and hills/verdant hills) and íts armor was a black version of rathalos' armor with some changes. The last/secret boss of the game sharing things with the flagship monster

What a fantasic way to put that, the point of how Fatalis's theme is the Verdant Hills/Rathalos theme and what it symbolizes, I mean. I'd like to think I'm normally pretty good at catching stuff like that, but this one completely flew over my head.

The fatalis theme is so powerful and your explanation really is interesting.
For me the start always felt almost scary and full of despair with the disturbing kokoto theme, it's like fatalis saying "That happy memory of yours of kokoto, i took it down and you're next". It almost brought up a feeling of loss, as if Kokoto was gone.
And once we get to the theme of astera's theme it's more heroic and determined, and almost as if we're still determined to protect astera and seliana so it won't end up like kokoto.
    Might sound dumb :c

I'd like to add as well, that part is a reference to the encounter BGM in one of the areas in Monster Hunter, which is the Forest and Hills. As it was the first music players heard on their first large monster hunt, the composer might've decided to add them to the final quest in Iceborne which is the Fatalis. I still get mild PTSD from hearing it as there was one area in that map that had a really bad camera angle and it was really hard to see what was going on so most of the time I got KO'd there. Here's the reference:

fun fact about this theme: when thie theme was made, its composer didn't know for what kind of the monster this theme was, and had no information without the order: "this monster is stronger version of Rathalos or something like that so could you make the theme like that?"
Later its composer saw fatalis(Milla Boreas in Japanese)and said "That's not what I imagined lol."

the main feeling I get from the different phases of fatalis is this: first phase is an absolute frenzy. it's a great tool to create shear panic in players who probably either feel confident in their ability to beat him or is scared of what is to come. combined with fatalis's insane timing/speed on his attacks throughout the fight creates this feeling of being outmatched and there is no backing out. it's when the player and character realizes it's going to be the fight of their lives. the switching of perspective of heroic and terror plays into the players small glimmer of hope that its beatable and the wall they still have climb to reach their goal. phase two is where the real learning phase kicks in. this is when you've basically seen most of his attacks and is just trying to learn the fight and timing. having a more heroic tone plays into that perfectly, because at this point you've been given positive feedback and that you're doing something to fatalis. it fills the player with hope. its isn't until phase 3 hits and the purple flame is revealed that the player is given terror again but this mostly shown in the visuals: the sheer bright purple flame contrasting the dark colors on fatalis himself as well as the environment of castle shrade coupled with how much damage it actually does to you indicated by either you fainting at full health or him doing 90% of your health in one hit. only time music plays into it is when u faint and the music cuts out or it plays the quest failed music which is full of sorrow. when you use the dragonator though, music becomes the forefront again playing the original proof of a hero score. the player is given so much hope from hearing that, meaning fatalis is at his wits end and the fight is almost over. I honestly cant remember what is playing during the fatalis death animation but any joy from that moment is through the visuals of fatalis flialing around before finally giving in and dieing.
.......the player then has the biggest ego around until arch tempered velkana comes around to knock them down a peg.

      @queenjewel1407 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

@@spinomania1921 not saying at velkana was harder, just that she wasn't a pushover like frostfang was. when people first fought her they were arragont thinking she was going to be easy. turns out she wasn't exactly easy and people had to actually pay attention to the fight to beat her. by the time she was released everyone had the new op fatalis set on so everyone was very very arragont and over confident in their abilities. frostfang in comparison was laughably easy especially for a variant monster. of course it didnt help it was release way later in the dlc line up, the same dlc pack as alatreon which was right before fatalis. people fought frostfang solo and beat it first try with very little problems since while the sticky ice was different, was seen already on base velkana. at velkana was just the monster that slaps players in the face to make them pay attention to the fights again.

This is me just speculating, but I think the "festive" part that you pointed out in the 2nd phase might be a kind of echo of the fallen Kingdom of Schrade. It sounds very similar to medieval style festival music. Considering the fact that Schrade was a medieval style kingdom (with a castle and everything) it would probably be the type of music that they would have listened to. This festive music coming back along with the heroic elements of World's theme and the brass instruments might be trying to communicate that the Hunter is in a way avenging those who fell to Fatalis way back when. If you want to get really poetic, it's almost like they're cheering us on.

I've always viewed Fatalis's fight themes like this - Phase 1's theme sets up Fatalis as this unnatural occurrence, a singular entity with a single-minded goal: the destruction of humanity and everything that we stand for. It's why it feels so off putting, but so good at the same time. Phase 2's theme, while sounding more heroic, is also us, the hunters, literally fighting for our lives as this living myth is trying to eradicate us with extreme prejudice. The final phase theme, Proof of a Hero, sets the theme of our hunters having faced against our very extinction and come out as triumphant victors, the last ones standing. (But, as we all know, Fatalis will ALWAYS come back, because his very being can regenerate from the smallest pieces of himself, consuming the hunters who wear him. This essential immortality that the Fatalis species seem to have, and it's raw, destructive power, is what makes this beast seem so unnatural to us.)
Overall, Fatalis is my all time favorite monster, and it's family of Crimson and White Fatalis have equally as pleasing themes. I'm super happy they added him to Iceborne to end the game with a bang! :D

My favourite part has to be the references to Driven By the Stars; all throughout World, they focus a lot on brass in the music and to me it feels like that first play of the reference in brass is the Hunter and all the people still behind you, those yet to come, and those who've sadly left the fight rallying to end this fight, but it repeats a second time in choir, the representation of danger in World, and feels just slightly disturbed (though I can't place why) which I see as Fatalis scoffing at our arrogance and mocking us with a rally of his own

The way I've always seen the disoriented parts of the first theme is the absolute panic that this thing instills. The ruined castle you fight on? This species was what did all that, *and more* in a single night. If you don't kill this thing now, who knows where's next? Maybe it's because I've fallen so many times in that phase, but it always instills a primal dread in me whenever I listen to it.
Once you get to phase two, I personally got the impression that, not only have you been able to push through the terror Fatalis instills, but Fatalis itself is beginning to take you as a serious threat. You've cleared the first hurdle - this thing isn't invincible. However, you've also pissed it off. It's time to finish what you started, and not let this thing finish you.
Then we get to Proof of a Hero. Since there'll likely be a video on that later (might I suggest reacting to the most popular versions? Gen U's version deserves mention, I'd say), I'll just leave it at the following: There's a reason why it was played at the Olympics.
Also, on the topic of Fatalis, another song to check out: the phase 2 theme of Zenith White Fatalis from the Monster Hunter Frontier series. To me, at least, that's the song that would play if you managed to incite the anger of a deity (which makes sense, given the context).

This is my favorite score in any piece of media ever.
In such a point in time where electronic music is the king, being affordable and modern, catching the attention of such a wide audience with just a few notes, would easily overshadow the sounds of the past, where scores would be too difficult, unfitting, or simply impossible to include in to one's media nowadays.
Even though it is such a difficult inclusion in to something like a video game, requiring so much direction and planning.. Monster Hunter did it anyways, and excelled. Every single aspect about Fatalis is more than an experience even by themselves.

I never knew the Kokoto village theme was in it, but after you mentioned it I was paying way closer attention and picked up the World theme immediately.
All these different themes are so beautifully and seemlessly weaved together.
If nothing else, this theme is a love letter to those of us who first fought Fatalis in Kokoto. It describes the journey we've been on so well.
Also, let us not ignore that phase three is when Fatalis pops his head up and says "wait, why do I hear boss music?"

  • @katyalupochev9589

You’re right about the choirs, in World and Iceborne at least it was pretty rare to hear choirs in a monster theme. It was reserved for Elder Dragons and monsters of unusual strength and ferocity. As soon as humans started singing, you would instantly get a pang of fear, like, “So I’ve got a real fight ahead of me, huh?”
Speaking of choirs, the “Brachydios” and “Raging Brachydios” themes are so good. Not just technically like probably all MH’s songs are, but they’re genuinely catchy and inspiring in their own right. In my uneducated opinion at least!
Brachydios is a mid level monster, not terribly difficult, who has a great theme. But the player can fight a rare variant of Brachy called “Raging Brachydios”. He’s much harder, more aggressive, and scarier. His theme song reflects that, with the dreaded choir music. The “chorus” of both their themes is so good, I get it stuck in my head every so often.

By incorporating the first game's village theme into this one, it not only sparks nostalgic familiarity in veteran hunters (only for that nostalgia to be cut off by tense chords), it also metaphorically represents just how far the series has come since the very first village theme, and incidentally how old Fatalis itself is.

I get it now the reason the first one was so chaotic was because of the hunter catching fatalis with his pants down then on the second phase fatalis pull them up as if you didn’t catch him watching hentai of human torture

You need to react to the monster hunter world iceborne theme. It's a beautiful piece of art
