Hostel takes the rational fear of being an American in a foreign land and takes it to its most depraved extremes. It was a movie that was so brutal and shocking that I'll never forget the first time that I watched it.

You want a horror movie that tops anything you have seen, and you'll wish you could forget?
The Human Centipede Full Sequel (a.k.a. part II).
That POS is the goriest most revolting thing I have ever seen!!!!!
aint no one watching that shi gang@@el_killorcure
@@1Haaku Good, don't.
Part III is at least funny as fuck.
Hostel was a brutal display of anatomical mutilation. Part 2 was good too.
@@el_killorcureI hope you watch all 3 centipede movies
The Achilles tear in this film was brutal
Right 😳
Paxton is one of the best final boys of the horror movies, unexpectedly too considering he was like the brat leader of the pack. He redeemed himself at the end by going head to head with the Elite Hunting Club and saving the japanese girl from being murdered
**SPOILERS FOR HOSTEL 2** shame he gets found & killed (somehow??) in the sequel
@@EnchantedTooWellyeah. I like to skip that scene when I watch the sequel
@@EnchantedTooWelli like the sequel too, but i hate that they kill off paxton. I loved his escape in hostel 1.
@@Hoi12336 it also doesn't make any sense imo
@@EnchantedTooWell well the leader of that organization is a very rich man and he was of course very pissed at paxton for his escape and all the damage he had done. Paxton was hiding at his girlfriend and if i remember correctly that girlfriend told someone on the phone that paxton is living with him. Or maybe they were following every family member and friend of paxton, so yeah maybe a bit far fetched but not impossible.
I would honestly call this a horror classic
Fax!!!This is the scariest torture gore movie of all time. It’s so grounded in reality and honest. That hallways of horror scene just spots out reality across some horrific place going on right now. This movie will shake you to the core when you understand this could happen to anyone.
I hate this movie so much
@@maskedman5657Don't blame you
This movie Hostel is like cartoons compared to the movie Martyrs from 2008.
I wouldn't call it a classic but it definitely has a place in 2000s horror
The scene of them arriving at the village is honestly cathartic as hell. Definitely one of the horror movies I've rewacthed the most

Ur a sick puppy
Cody, your movie breakdowns are phenomenal. When you mention you and your dad seeing the same movie and having that "OH SHIT!" moment together is really fucking cool.
Right
Eli Roth is one of those directors who’s technically skilled, but also can’t write characters or good dialogue to save his life. The Green Inferno is also a great example of that.
at least his dialogue is better than Rob Zombie's, his dialogue is the worsttttt
@@EnchantedTooWell That’s not saying much unfortunately lol
@heyitsmxrnie there really isn't much difference...
Facts
@@VanDutch87 I know haha I can't think of anyone who's written worse dialogue than RZ
I always felt bed for the japanese girl, Kana, she is like the only naive and innocent people who didn’t deserved her fate. Seeing her face half melted in the reflection must have break her mentality that’s why she gave her life away
Duh
East Asians (Japan, Korea, and China mostly) are extremely strict and sort of unforgiving in their beauty standards. I’ve heard many stories of Korean and Japanese girls, especially, taking their own lives because they either got botched surgery or it didn’t make them happy in the way they thought it would. I went to school to study Asian cultures and languages and did a report on it one year. That knowledge makes it more sad to me.
Over the years I've become pretty desensitised to gore in Horror films... except for eye stuff.
Thanks for that Hostel.
Saw this film when I was 10, and it's still one of the only horror films I struggle to rewatch because of that eye scene.
Can I just say how thrilled I am to hear Cody talk about how his dad let him watch horror movies from a young age! I had parents that really didn't have a lot of restrictions on what I watched & because of that, I have so many fond memories of watching horror films with my dad.
I honestly thought that part of the point was that these were frat bros, that they aren't suppose to initially be likeable and it's not until Paxton is pushed into the idea of a fish out of water scenario that we are given a character arc to care about; one thing this doesn't get enough credit for is when Paxton is left alone, minus his friends, the mood/atmosphere and uneasiness really hits then and you genuinely start to feel for his character and the impending situation he's stuck in.
Also I always felt, that as foolish as his choice was to follow Natalya into that dark place, it made sense; he had earlier discussed with his friend about a girl drowning and going to get help by which time she had already died and if he just jumped in she could have been saved - I think that played directly into him going to the ends for his friends because he had already failed once to save a life and probably didn't want to do that again.
Though the ending you described completely surprised me because that's not the ending on mine 😂 mine has a very specific train station toilet scene that segues into the Dutch businessman sub plot and then Paxton leaving on the train (but no scene on board it). I have seen the ending you described and I honestly prefer the way it plays for me, cliche yes, more satisfying? Absolutely.
I think Eli Roth was on fire at the beginning of his career. This is my favorite horror film and I also love Hostel Part II & Cabin Fever.
Whatever you say about this film, it certainly made an impact. I’m sure most people’s first viewing is something they’ll always remember.
Yep this was one of the first movies i was able to watch alone in theaters as i had just turned 18 and OMG talk about a wild ride.
My mom took me and a friend to see Hostel at 13 years old. She is the best.
😂
That intro perfectly explains the hostle experience
Very similar experience for me! I was a freshman in high school and my friend and brother and I were hanging out and somehow Hostel 2 was on TV and none of us really knew anything about it except that it was a horror movie. The whole time we were like... we probably shouldn't be watching this, but its something that you can stop looking. We all had such a sinking feeling after the movie was over. It's the only horror movie that I've ever felt bad watching. I still have photographic mental images of the worst scenes of that movie even thought I have never seen it again. Crazy!
The frat boy dialogue is intentional for the first half of the film. The violence and torture in the second half is to mirror their behaviour. Hence the guy from suits showing up is important as it makes Paxton realise how similar they are. The whole slogan of "you can pay to do anything" is so prevalent.
This is a perfect example of how the concept of "good writing" is not always in depth characters, realistic scenarios. Eli Roth is a very talented writer and director.
I'm agreed, Eli roth it's a very good director and his films for me always have something than say and not it're just gore and depravaty.
That men it're so underrated.
That aspect of the film is so overlooked I feel, the guys paying for sex earlier on in the movie parallel with the rich depraved men paying to kill in the second half is brilliant
It's very interesting to hear so many American's who say that they've never left their country... From Europe here, and it's a very uncommon thing to say around here, get backpacking in Europe Cody!
Awesome review, makes me wanna rewatch it!
i backpacked in europe (american here) and it was a BLAST.
Australians are the opposite weirdly enough, must be living so far away from everywhere. Aussies are everywhere
Been waiting on this one for a while! Love your stuff Cody!
That scene with slicing the Achilles tendon F*CKED me up in middle school
I remember watching this movie in the 5th grade. I was watching it with my brother and his friend. Still freaks me out and I haven’t watched it since.
One thing I loved about this movie was the subtle things going on around the characters. All of it hinting that something awful is happening and almost everyone around them is in on it. To be so far from home, in a situation like that is terrifying. No one is going to help you get away. Because they're either working for Elite Hunting Club or so terrified that they don't dare interfere.
Eli Roth has some classics this and cabin fever are great but his dialogue especially in cabin fever is hilarious. The part where the guy in cabin fever yells “no pancakes!” To the kid makes me die laughing every time
The part when the kid is repeating PANCAKES!!! over and over again and doing karate moves was hilarious
It’s a character arc that he goes into the “exhibit”. He couldn’t save the drowning girl when he was younger, so he can’t back out of wanting to save his friend. Plus, at that point, there was no turning back.
I like the frat boy type of dialogue. Makes the characters seem real. Doesn’t make them bad, just accurate. They do have good values that offset any ways that they come off negatively. If these characters weren’t written this way, then their actions of going out of their way to this hostel aren’t supported enough.
I appreciate you talking about your pops at the beginning. I lost my dad two years ago and he was my best friend. You talking about your pops unlocked some memories for me and i appreciate it man thanks
Sorry to hear that
@@CodyLeachYT Life can be tragic how we deal with those tragedies is what defines us my dad would want me to be strong.Thank you again for your sencerity in a world full of lyes.
@@CodyLeachYT Like i appreciate you for your honesty as im sure many others do keep it real.
You crack me up every single time. I love this movie but the way you broke down the stupid parts of it ("cracked out meth whores" leading Paxton to the "art show...") had me dyin'. You never hold your tongue. Don't ever! Another awesome vid!
I forgot all about the Achilles tendon cut. I'm not squeamish at all but man, that got me!
Great review. Note: Rutger Hauer is a Dutch actor, not an American one. He was the most famous actor in my country long before he did Nighthawks with Sylvester Stallone, not to mention Blade Runner.
This movie introduced me to the image of cutting the Achilles heel that scene has always stuck with me how they got cut, the guy tries to stand up and it just traumatized me.
This movie has strangely grown on me over time. I remember it being very trendy to look down on it. Now I really appreciate the tremendous gonads it has and its fun and scary concept.
I know it's not even halloween yet but you should review Krampus. I just rewatched it and would love to see your thoughts on it
I remember the first time I saw this movie. I had just eaten this big BBQ pork burger, and for whatever reason I decided to watch Hostel on Netflix. HOLY SH!T. As soon as the scene where the guy gets his ankle tendons cut came on, I almost lost my dinner lol. Also, if you plan on talking about torture movies, can you cover the Human Centipede movies. At least the first one.
The Takashi Mikke cameo is a cool nod to the film's obvious inspirations.
I watched Final Destination 3 as a young teenager and I credit that movie for making me never set foot in a tanning salon. Good for my skin, my wallet, a n d my paranoia.
When I first streamed this movie on my phone, I was at work and I got to the part where the achilles tear happens during breakfast in the cafeteria and made the loudest possible grunt you can imagine that literally everyone there could hear.
Miraculously, I'm somehow still employed, lol.
I saw this in theatre when I was around 22 years old and just becoming aware of politics and world events on a more mature level. Looking back, this movie perfectly played into the early 00's, post-911 American zeitgeist. It was a time where French fries were being called "freedom fries" and people were joking (or not) about pretending to be Canadian when they traveled to Europe. George Bush Jr was serving his second term as president. It was the last time the public was somewhat comfortable with embracing an American style war ethos, and there was a general air of defensiveness. Having that realized in a movie where people have a torture fetish, and are willing to pay extra for Americans, fleshed out that subconscious national fear in a way that wouldn't have been near as effective in the previous or following decade.
Fluent in yappanese 🗣️
also in the 2000s people weren't as PC as they are now, so a lot of racist/homophobic/xenophobic terms and language were used especially after 9/11 hence in this movie the characters flippantly say f*ggot and are misogynistic towards women etc
@@EnchantedTooWellthere’s also stuff that wasn’t offensive then that is now, for some people. Like, when I was growing up during that time, “transsexual” and “mentally retarded” were considered PC terms. They didn’t have malicious intentions behind them or anything, they were the medically accurate terms back then. I don’t remember hearing the term “transgender” until I was in high school in the late 2000’s/very early 2010’s. I’ve been told now that there’s actually a difference between the two, but it is interesting to note the language changes just in my lifetime alone.
I’m Portuguese, was at Cambridge around this time and an American girl approached me, asking me whether it was “safe” for her to visit France. It was so weird as she started out with, “I know you’re not French, but”. I was “the closest” to French around and she was scared enough to turn to me, a complete stranger, for information.
She was afraid the French would do something to her over her being American, which was so wild.
@@Nocturnalux there's a line of dialogue in Hostel 2, I can't remember who says it but one of the girls says something along the lines of "There aren't any safe places in Europe to travel to anymore"
It is what it is.....violent, Gorey, bloody....I don't expect an award winning script 🤷🏽♀️....I re watch it every once in awhile ❤
This one of my favorite theater experiences. It had a great crowd reaction and it was a blast. The movie was good too with a unique plot and great pacing. Eli Roth was one my favorite directors when I was younger because of this film and Cabin Fever. That would change after all the shit he put out later.
I caught a test screening for Thanksgiving. It's a complete return to form.
Yeah I liked cabin fever gorey but also hilarious. I'm not into the torture porn stuff so hostel wasn't my jam. But yeah green inferno and knock knock were terrible

'It exists' - Cody Leach on the acclaimed melodrama Hostel, 2024
I literally just searched last night to see if you had a Hostel review and was surprised that you didn’t. This is ridiculous timing.
So the point you made about the characters and how unlikeable they are is, at least with me, done on purpose. Dead Meat brought this up and I found it more interesting the more I dove into this movie. I feel that Eli really challenges the viewers with Hostel (and even Hostel 2 to an extent, though poorly). I remember when I first watched this movie thinking it was a Saw-like slasher and remember thinking, "Wow, I hate these guys. I can't wait for them to die" kind of thing. By the end of it, I was really feeling bad for what each of them went through and the literal hell hole they were in. So I think the points you made were fair, but I feel it's also fair to say that the shitty dialogues were intentional. Great review overall. I think Eli is a pretty slept-on filmmaker. Dude really pushes the limits with his films. Really makes you dislike all the characters but makes you sympathize after the movie is over. Green Inferno and Cabin Fever are other good examples of this.
Exactly, I hated the characters but that’s the point. The actor who plays Josh and Baxton had such great facial expressions and did such a good job at making me feel sad for them and I really felt helpless along with them.
The dude from Dead Meat is a whiny dork. His fans are even worse.
Not a horror movie, but felt the same as your saying with Uncut Gems and its main character Howard Ratner.
The actor who plays Louis Litt I always remembered from this cameo. I look forward to seeing him in Thanksgiving.
I love how there were a couple of different endings. Paxton on the train was a bit much, glad that wasn't the ending they went with
The really scary thing about this movie is that in the back of your mind you kinda know this stuff actually happens.
I can’t remember which hostel film it was, but I saw one on that was basically just a recreation of real gore clips that were around on the internet at the time (I only know about them because edgy kids in my school showed them to people for some reason). I think it’s the second hostel film. This stuff is 100% happening in the real world.
@@_.-_Crimpy-_..-. funnily enough the hostel/saw films came out around the same time as War on Terror and Abu Ghraibh
I tell you what....I've never looked more forward to a debriefing than I am to this one😂😂😂
I remember being scared to watch Saw for the first time because it was always thrown around as a Torture Porn movie. I wasn't really aware of any others like that for years and years. I think it was last year that my brother decided we should watch Hostel. I loved it. It's nervewracking, it's pretty gorey and violent but not too much. It somehow manages to seem much worse than it is. My brother hates Achilles tendon wounds so that scene always gets a reaction. And we had recently watched the Green Inferno and Cannibal Holocaust, so we must have just been in an "extreme" phase. I also love Canin Fever a lot. Now I've found myself a fan of Eli Roth in general. Maybe he has an immaturity to his films but something about that is gun for me. I think it feels like 80s slashers with characters being dumb or whatever. I'm stoked to go see Thanksgiving when it comes out.
I remember you talking about this movie in one of your earlier videos 'Top 5 Movies I Regret Seeing' when I first discovered your channel a few years ago😆 crazy how something that happened years & years ago can stay with you 🧐
So here's a stupid fact... After this movie came out, tourism to Slovakia got really hurt by it, foreigners didn't want to visit because they thought this movie shows how the towns actually look like. (and well, the torture didn't help either :p)
I'm still kinda scared of mowers
Hey Cody, have you ever seen or have any plans to review Tucker and Dale Vs Evil??? I’d love to hear your thoughts on that movie.
"Of Course My Horse! I'm tha King of tha Schwing!"
7:53 - Shoot, I was warily keeping my distance from log trucks on the road even before seeing Final Destination 2. They just never look securely in place.
The third one is wild af, one scene in particular lmao
Speaking of the log trucks, a guy like a mile from my work was tailing a semi and a pipe came off the back and impaled him. No clue if he died.
I've been waiting for you to do these!!!
TOO CLOSE HATE, TOO CLOSE HATE ..... Cody and papa leach 👉🏻*click* Nope, no angry vibes right now 😂
Great review cody. I myself found these films and cabin fever because of Ice nine kills. And absolutely loved them for the uniqueness of them.
btw the scene you're referring to at 15:37 they getting kicked out a nightclub not a brothel lol🤣
So quick story when this movie came out I was obsessed with seeing it, but I was too young. I went over to a friends house and ended up watching it on his TV. This was the first movie where I secretly watched it somewhere else. At the time I was in middle school and I had that awkward hairstyle where my bangs were right about my eyelids (most guys have a long hair awkward stage in middle school). Well my mom made me a deal that if I got a haircut she’d buy me hostel. At this point she didn’t know I’ve already seen hostel. Again though.. I was so obsessed with this movie I chopped my hair off just so I could own it and rewatch it daily. I LOVE HOSTEL!!! I love the eeriness of the townsfolk, I love the searching of the missing friends, I love the ending, I love the soundtrack! Hostel is a nostalgic trip that will always hold a spot in my top 10!!!!
Buah men, this movie was my obsesion in my teeneger age, yeah, it's very weard than one kid say that of a movie so sick and disturbing. But i love the work of Eli Roth in this movie, also it's a exelent study of the sadism and the relation of s3x and the violence, and as i love the psichology and filosofy in one film, it's that the reasons for that i love this film, not for the gory or violence.
I’m one of the few who thought 2 was definitely an improvement, curious to hear your thoughts on it!
Me too...glad to see I'm not alone...I like this one as well and I felt 2 was just as good
I went and saw this after seeing and enjoying Cabin Fever in theatres. Afterwards, whatever bucket list items Inhad regarding traveling abroad instantly evalorated 😂😂😂.
As usual, great review Cody! Waiting excitedly for the next two. Even though I didn’t know there was a third movie.
Man, I haven't even thought about this movie in years. Now I wanna watch it again! It's definitely a wild one. However, I couldn't care less about the sequels.
Watching Wolf Creek in the theaters gave me that same feeling you had when you watched Hostel. I think both movies came out the same year. If you haven't reviewed Wolf Creek and Wolf Creek 2, those would be some interesting reviews from you. They would be a good addition to your upcoming 31 on 31
(depends on which part of the world you come from) they literally came out within months of each other🤣
Funny story, I had a trip to go to Turkey last weekend. All by myself right, never traveled out of the country alone before. I ended up canceling the trip because of this movie, and there’s just too much crazy stuff going on around there right now. I told my girlfriend “I seen Hostel too many times. I’m not going right now, maybe next year”
The killer could be your next door neighbour.
@@zeynepgulsu1899 Thank you. It was going to be my first time flying ever. I let the fear get to me. I’m planning on visiting next year.

No lie “the dude from suits” I forget his real name but Suits is the first show I saw him in then I noticed him in a bunch of shit I watch lol
I couldn't find a review from you for Hell House LLC. Is there anyway you could do a review on it? Or is it on the list? I know found footage movies aren't the most popular but I'd love to see your thoughts on it
Another Eli Roth film you should review if you haven’t already is The Green Inferno. Curious what you thought about it. Inspired by the old 70’s movies Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox.
Dude! This is one of my favorite horror movies and I sat that every time when Paxton is alone "dude just get the fuck out there!!"
Ruiger Hauer was actually Dutch and he would have been a great addition.

Wait freshman in high school. I was two years out of HS. Crazy how time flies. I feel ancient lol.
I can not wait for thanksgiving
Love your reviews man
I'm excited to hear your thoughts on Hostel 3 that's an action horror masterpiece that isn't good but it's ridiculous and fun.
I can't help but feel that for this particular movie, Roth wanted us to dislike the characters a bit. I may be reading too much into it, but I felt he painted Americans as somewhat ignorant, selfish, people who go where they want, do as they please, and care about no one but themselves while doing it (thus offering some explanation for why people from other parts of the world may hate us so much). The main character goes from using women as objects to risking his life to save a young woman by the end, showing that he's not an ignorant boy anymore, but a deeply scarred man.
That said, great review. Love the channel.
Cody not movie related...Will you be doing a livestream playthrough on the Separate Ways/RE4 DLC ?? Curious to know your thoughts on it if you have played it ! Keep up the good work..
I hope you see this, and if you do, I would love to know your thoughts on Eli Roth's " The Rotten Fruit" please? I'm sure you have seen the Special features on Cabin Fever?
I actually saw this film for the first time i few months ago. My now wife had me sit down and watch it and for the first 30 mins i was like "Is this a horror film or a late night skinAMAX film" 😂😂😂
Cody have you watched the new Never Hike Alone yet? Hyped for whenever you review that
I remember seeing this day one in theaters and no one wanted to see it with me. I remember like 40 minutes into the movie, I walked out and looked at the marquee to make sure I was watching Hostel, not Eurotrip.
I actually like every single hostel film. Even part 3. If part 3 had a higher budget it would've been better reviewed
It's better reviewed than 1 and 2 and they have bigger budgets lol
They all suck 😂
I may be in the minority but, especially as a woman, I kind of liked that they made our 3 lead characters douchey, frat boy archetypes. It provides the viewer the experience of seeing our sentiments change when Paxton does become the “final guy” you want to see survive in the end. And Josh as well, being the more reserved guy with less experience than Paxton, Oli, it makes him more identifiable and sympathetic especially with how horrible his death is.
I appreciated the writing journey Eli Roth took us on, Paxton leaves Slovakia a completely changed character
By the time Hostel came about I was already heavily desensitized so it wasn’t all impactful. Grew up renting the Traces of Death series, Faces of Death series, Shocking Asia series and similar films on VHS. A lot of the Nazisploitatiion films had elements of torture porn in them. Mark of the Devil (1970) could be considered a very early rendition of torture porn. Throw in Cannibal Ferox, Cannibal Holocaust and other cannibal films. Having come out of the womb watching horror in the 70’s, and having watched all the above and similar films, Hostel was not all that shocking to me. It’s one I consider good to see once and move on. It does have great effects. It’s more for shocking those that did not grow up watching the types of films I mentioned.
Great review!
No that you mention it, there is a lot of convenience when Paxton goes on his revenge spree at the end.
Seeing this with your dad had to be an experience. Lol
One of my favorite horror movies. I unfortunately believe that Hostel 2 and 3 should’ve never been made though
hostel 3 definitely
Hostel 2 is perfectly fine tbh...I liked it...especially the lead girl...it also has a great final third and ending
Sadly hostel 2 is banned over here in woke New Zealand 🙄
Remembered this movie popping up on TV once watched it and traumatized me when I was kid, I was maybe around 12-13yrs old 😂
Isnt this the movie Wurst Vacation by Ice Nine Kills is based off??
I remember not liking this movie at all due to the insufferable characters and the underwhelming gore, though it's been a really long time since I've seen it. I might need to give Hostel another chance.
I also saw this in theaters back in the day with my dad for the first time and it was so cringe and I won’t ever forget the silence between us during the nude scenes… cringe… glad I’m not alone!
Cody, please tell me you get your shirts. I want that TCM shirt!
I have waited for this review for 20+ years- and you didn't disappoint-- your review is exactly how I felt about this film... thank you for this..im finally not alone
I agree with you this may not be the best horror movie or a favorite of mine but it’s one of the few I watched growing up to truly get under my skin and scare me. It’s the real life horror for me, it feels like it could really happen.
the inspiration for the movie came from a website that Eli Roth came across which was advertising paying to go in a room and shoot someone in Thailand I think?
Cool review
But bro…… where did you get the awesome shirt
Jaws did this better than anyone. When Jaws 2 came out they advertised it as “just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water”. Because people were literally too afraid to swim in the ocean for years. It also sparked the mass killing of sharks to the point Spielberg ended up apologising to shark activists
