There are many different sub-genres in the world of Horror. Let's talk about a handful of them and rank how much I typically enjoy them in a tier list.

You have to watch & do a review on 2015 The Gallows & 2019 The Gallows act 2 if you haven’t already its one of the best found footage movies I’ve seen
Wouldn’t The Thing(my favorite horror movie of all time) fit in to alien horror? Shouldn’t that movie alone get that in to take my money category?
Not gonna lie I’m starting to think that tier lists are a better concept than regular rankings because especially with your videos they’re just way more fun and unique
Tier lists Are Better than rankings
Imo
I enjoy them both. I used to not understand the appeal of tier lists but I’ve put my own spin on them and now I have a lot of fun with them.
Love the theme of your list. You seem very knowledgeable about the horror genre, but watch "Creepshow" and a few others before making your next list on the Horror Anthology subject for it might bump it up a notch. I am 66 years old and have been a horror film fan since I was 6 years old, and I am saddened that younger people like yourself cannot sit and watch a black and movie. It is a shame, and you should investigate the older movies to see how we got where we are. And being a gore/slasher fan, you should study some of the Gialio films a bit more to see how slasher films got to where they are. Great list, but study the older films. You will be pleasantly surprised. I share many of your appraisal except that I never cared for the vampire genre, and I still don't think anyone topped the silent version of Nosferatu.
@@CodyLeachYT I think Rankings are easier to digest for quicker videos for people. While Tier Ranking is more personal and in-depth. I really enjoy when you do both too, tier rankings are always my wife's and I favorite to watch of yours. Keep up the great work Cody!
This is a rather chew glass 🤣 for me but enjoy
Cody is cranking out these horror tier lists and you know what? I’m here for it.
That's high praise.NUFF SAID
Ong.
At 6:08 that was so adorable to see your daughter poke her head in! ❤ Awesome video as always!
Future TH-camr? She already likes ghost movies!
She's a doll Cody!
Cody: I haven’t done a tier list in a while
Also Cody 3 days ago: Ranking Horror directors tier list. 😂
I recorded this before I did that video. lol it was waiting on sponsor approval for a week.
1. Slasher
2. Vampires
3. Werewolf
4. Post apocalyptic
5. Psychological horror
6. Crime horror
7. Superpower horror
8. Animal horror
9. Creature feature
10. Alien horror
Always appreciate dad Cody randomly in the videos
These tier lists are so enjoyable. I wouldn't mind you making more of them.
Same here bro
Love these types of videos! Tier rankings and icebergs are probably my favorites. Some other subgenres that i think exist are "Creepy kids", "Lovecraftian", "Asian", "Curse"
What would fall into the asian category
@@dr.doofenshmertzpulse, ju on, the ring, one missed call, incantation
Bone Tomahawk is a fantastic cannibal movie and just a great film all round. Ravenous is pretty good too, but a little less insane.
The problem is that in the late 70s and early 80s, they sucked.
Great movie. I always tell people who have never heard of it to go in blind and see what they have to say about the last 20 mins
Agreed and He Never Died
He was licking me.....Great line
I was so incredibly disappointed with BT. Apparently I'm in the minority there. Won't ever revisit it.
Loved this!
I feel like movies such as Child’s Play, M3gan, Leprechaun, Puppet Master, etc. also all fall into their own category too but I’m not really sure what it would be called. I guess “Doll” would be most appropriate??
Facts, Doll. Def popular enough
Meghan is a robot so I guess machine horror, like I Am Mother, which is also under post apocalyptic. And Leprechaun under fantasy horror.
@@balldalt Oh, yeah, definitely, MACHINE HORROR 🤖could have been another sub-genre on this tier list. And besides "Megan," some others that would definitely fit into that sub-genre are: "Death Machine," "Chopping Mall," "Maximum Overdrive," "The Terminator," and "Child's Play" 2019.
YESSSSS, a *Dolls* category!!!
Honestly an amazing view of where your head is at, where we can friendly argue, and you always say relaxed you honest views which is dope.
been a fan for a couple years now. I find myself getting the most excited during a long car ride when you drop a new tier list/ranking/review series. Great stuff.
For me, thrillers are just horror films that are afraid to be called a horror film
that makes alot of sense lol
My girlfriend is convinced she doesn’t like horror.. so I call all horror movies just thrillers, and she’ll watch them.. Exorcist is a thriller, right?
I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ALL WEEK!!! THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!!!
Same man. I am so excited to see this list because his taste are very different to my own. For example I love Giallo movies and am not a fan of slashers.
Dude I live for Cody ranking vids, I need to find a way to meet you this year dawg. One of the only horror channels I watch
Nobody on TH-cam has consistent banger videos like you, my boy!
The Chucky and Freddy in Cody MELTED hearing “..Ghoooostface😆😆😆” 😂😂😂🔥🔥🔥 … and i thought we was never gonna get a take my money tier 😂😂
It's awesome that your daughter is also a horror fan🤩 I absolutely love psychological horror, slashers and horror comedies, but these past few years I'm glad I've explored other horror subgenres because I've discovered some new favourites, like The Lost Boys, The Thing, Train to Busan, 28 Days Later and Lake Mungo!
Dudeeeee gingersnaps one and two are awesome! Number two for the setting alone. Fun fact one of the main protagonists is a grown up Beverly Marsh from the original it movie
So glad you championed Last Exorcism - so underrated and a great performance from Patrick Fabian. I’d love to see you review that some time!
Cody’s always just killing it
My favorite genres are psychological and Paranormal. These tend to be the movies that unnerve me most. Also good calling out the people who call horror movies thrillers.
The way your voice changed when you talked to your daughter was so sweet. Heartwarming to see a good old-fashioned loving father/horror review TH-camr.
Another awesome tier list video Cody! I think what makes your rankings so fun and unique is not just your excellent opinions but also your tendency to put in these hilariously clever category titles. Makes it all the more interesting 🤘
Two 'recent' British Werewolf films, Dog Soldiers (2002) and Howl (2015) may help fill in the gap a little for such films since the '80's hayday, both also feature the ever reliable Sean Pertwee.
I’m really diggin these tier list videos
The Thing 2011 is one of those "all CG body horror" movies you said don't happen, and since you classified the original as body horror, the prequel absolutely counts. And yes, I know production tried to go practical and was overruled by executives with a CG boner, it still counts.
Chewing glass at kaiju film is crazy; I recommend The Host, which is a kaiju film I think you would definitely love if you haven’t already seen it, and I definitely recommend expanding into the kaiju horror, whether it be Japan, or surprisingly some European/African films that do it very well
Loved the cameo from the kiddo, reminds me of my own daughter who LOVES horror movies.
Such a great video, and easily one of the most fun. I also cannot really get into giallo style films. I don't despise them but i wouldn't ever buy them for my collection either. I prefer tense, atmosphere building, and unnerving horror the most because i love movies that legitimately scare me and give me nightmares. That's not to say i don't also like horror comedies or other mish mashes, but my ideal is a serious movie that just aims to scare people and really get under their skin and i have found a lot of those across a wide variety of sub genres.
Cody you need to suffer thru a children of the corn marathon and give us the hilarious roast/tier list we've been waiting for lol
If I were to list off my favorite horror subgenres, here’s what my Top 5 would be:
5. Home Invasion
4. Vampire
3. Psychological
2. Comedy
1. Slasher
Why is slasher that high? Some of the worst horror films are slashers.
@@thomasffrench3639 Because slasher films are the horror films I personally get the most out of. If I were to do this objectively, I don’t even know how I would rank all of these subgenres. And if I were to do this subjectively, I think that’s missing the point of doing this kind of thing. We all have different opinions and perspectives on film, so it’s enjoyable to share those opinions and perspectives.
@@MichaelTomsyckI think I am more prone to enjoy something I think is quality rather than specific genres. Maybe I’ve gone in too deep, but for every slasher film I like there’s another I find okay, and two more I absolutely hate. It is a very mixed bag of quality when I don’t really care about the kills, because in all honesty other horror and action films have way cooler deaths. So kills are not really gonna sell me on a slasher movie
@@thomasffrench3639 I essentially agree with you. If I were to watch a great werewolf movie like An American Werewolf in London or a mediocre slasher film like Child’s Play 3, I’d go with the great werewolf film. That’s because a great movie is a great movie. My list just happens to be the horror subgenres that I like the most. At the end of the day, these kind of videos are fun to give your opinions and see what others list as their favorite and least favorite of something.
@@thomasffrench3639the goatedness is peak tho
Not Cody dissing one of my fave films of all time The Beyond!
Love the tier lists
@Cody fun watch disagree on a few but that is the fun of any list to see what we agree on, and what is different. Thanks for all the fun and always calling it as YOU see it. I appreciate the integrity
You're killing it with the content lately Cody. Keep going my guy!!
Halloween gifts came early with 2 horror themed tier lists in 2 days 😀👏🏼 🎉
Could listen to you talk about this stuff for hours man. I drive for fedex and just listen to your videos all day
Awesome tier list, it would be great to listen this types of videos in a podcast format, keep the good work and greetings from Chile
Currently at the cannibal section of this video, and I'm curious if you would classify Bones and All in this subgenre? If I remember correctly you were pretty positive on it back when it came out in 2022, but at the same time it is much more of a romance film rather than something like The Green Inferno. Great video thus far!
First time being on time for something and it's a Cody Leach video hell yeahh 🤟
One horror movie that’s kinda mix of psychological and supernatural, it’s called the last shift. It takes place at a police station that is being shut down and what goes on is creepy to me
the found footage AND giallo placements had me gagged! they're def two of my fave genres!!
one movie i highly recommend is Lake Mungo. it's more mockumentary than found footage and very good!!!
love your videos and hearing your take on movies even though we have such different tastes!
This entire channel is Top Tier. Cody, you're the best movie reviewer on the world wide web, and my absolute go-to film critic!
Thank you
Slasher would also go on "Take my Money" for me and 90% of the reason is because I'm a fanboy for the 80's era and someone who appreciates films like Child's Play 3, Friday the 13th '09, the remake of TCM and Halloween 2018 & Ends. Bless your girl man
Yeah, I’ve probably seen too many bad slasher movies. I won’t take my money if the film has like a 60% Chance of being garbage
Like the other comments are saying, your Tier Lists are some of your best content.
Keep up the great work, as always!
I feel Japanese horror like The Grudge, Sadako, Ring and pulse deserved its own genre
I feel like Korean Horror may be its own category, too: 'Parasite' was huge, 'The Host' and 'Oldboy' can be considered classics, 'Train to Busan' is one if my personal favorites, and I was fond of '#Alive' as well though it may not be for everyone. Some may be more horror adjacent types, leaning more towards action or thriller, hard to say.
For sure! The grudge was my first horror movie that I’ve seen, and it will always be something special
Agree. I’d also say Cosmic horror should be a category too
Yesss, the onryō. Japanese, vengeful ghosts are a very specific type of haunting.
@@thejake267 I was surprised that cosmic horror wasn't in the list. Things like The Ritual and Annihilation are totally unlike most of these other movies. Though, I guess you can consider The Ritual to be something of a cross between folk horror and a creature feature, and Annihilation a creature feature and alien horror.
Found footage is AMAZING when the story and acting hold up.
Dude you seriously seem like the coolest dad ever. Your kids are so lucky!
just got off work and now I get to kick back to this? yessir
The autopsy of Jane Doe was a pretty solid witchcraft movie
Yes, it was. She creeped me out the whole movie.. For some reason, I just had such a weird and eerie feeling every time it lingered on her face and eyes. Idk why, but it gave me a bad feeling. Lmao 😂😂
The taking of deborah logan is a great possession movie
For real, I watched it on a whim one night several years ago and was pleasantly surprised by it. It’s definitely a great example of a possession AND a found footage film done right. Framing it as a documentary about Alzheimer’s was really unique and really smart.
Really enjoy hearing your views and opinions! Love ur work!
I was about to watch, but I rather save this video for later tonight. Having a beer on a Friday night. Keep the content coming Cody! You’re the best horror TH-camr 🖤
Gingersnaps for werewolves in the last 30 years and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage for giallo! Thanks for the company over my lunch break! Enjoy and keep it spooky!
It’s insanely rare for me to like any found footage horror movies but there is a few the rec movies, Frankenstein’s army and maybe a haunted house parody version of these types of movies
You could also do another sub genre called stalker horror or mix horror, basically a blending of different types like slasher with supernatural or possession with mystery. There is also sci fi horror
I think This is the End would be a comedy horror at least. It’s one of my favorites lol.
The Fly with Jeff Goldbloom will forever be one of my top films in horror genre. Rewatched it a few months back still holds up very well!
Fuck man. I've been following you since damn near the beginning. I've stopped watching for a little over a year for personal life bullshit. Watching through again, you've grown so much!!! Great. Great. Great content, man!!
Another tier list video right after the directors one! Really digging these.
Best exorsism movie . The Exorsism Of Emily Rose Starring Jennifer Carpenter who was also in Dexter who plays Deb , Dexters sister
"I don't want the images in my head." That's the reason I've never watched Deliverance or The Human Centipede.
Great content as always! I’d loved to see a tier list of movies based off of video games. Or a tier list of your enjoyment of past 31 for 31’s you’ve done!
I'd say my favorite is creature feature/monster/alien/animal types. Not necessarily because I just love that genre/genres, but because it is the genre with the most amount of my favorite horror movies in it. Jaws, The Thing, Alien and Aliens, The Descent and The Mist to name some. I'd guess I'd group them more as monster movies.
Btw, we absolutely agree that The Thing is our favorite horror movie.
I need to chill on watching these while falling asleep I just had a dream where the alien from The Thing infiltrated my friend group lol
Cody has the most refreshing ideas for tier lists and Im here for them all
I enjoy home invasion, cat and mouse chasing, and group trips in horror. Sadly, apparently it’s really hard to make these good. Think When a Stranger Calls, Strangers, Vacancy, House of Wax, etc. Not too big on supernaturals.
I agree with most picks except Kaiju for sure. Shame there was no "END of the world". Love this movies more than post- apocalyptic.
'afflicted' is a movie that is vampire mixed with found footage, have you seen it? 😅
Also ruins 2008 is a body horror movie ? and if not what other category.
Great video, man. Have you done a slasher weapon tier list yet, because that would be dope.
I can agree with you to an extent on the oversaturation of the zombie subgenre. I know a lot of it rode the coattails of the success of The Walking Dead, but aside from TWD spinoffs happening now, I think it has "died off" in a way. That could also be due to the pandemic and strikes and we just haven't seen enough movies period. SUPER excited for the potential of 28 Years Later!
I saw it comes at night at a drive in and my poor 1999 ford Taurus died right when we got there so we could barely hear the movie and I had to beg my brother to drive 45 mins at 2am to pick me up so I share your frustration in “nothing even came at night!”
That was fun!!! Thanks for a great tier list!!
Last Comment 28 months later is perfect because then you guaranteed another sequel but with jumping to 28 years later there’s no where to go from there lol
Cody, have you seen Creep? I normally hate found footage too but that one really works for me
YES, Creep is my favourite found footage movie of all time! I'd even argue that people who aren't fans of the Found Footage genre would enjoy it!
Low key the best found footage movies are slasher films. Supernatural elements don’t really work with the genre in my opinion.
I love creep bro
Animal horror hits me in a way. I love animals with all my heart, but I respect them for their intense athleticism that we humans have seemed to have lost throughout time (evolution) and know they're dangerous.
Movies like Cujo and Back Country are scary because they COULD happen. Chances are they won't- animals usually leave us alone- but it COULD. And without a gun, most of us don't stand a chance, even with bats or knives or mace. Heck even WITH a gun, look at The Reverant- Dicaprio's character was almost dead. Yeah, he killed the bear, but without people around, he TOO wouldn't have survived.
Dog soldiers is a banging werewolf movie, you forgot to mention that one.
Cody you gotta watch tales from the hood, one of the most underrated anthology films imo
I love these tier list rankings, Cody! You should make an "Entry to Horror" tier list focusing on the movies that would get younger viewers into the horror genre! (Hocus Pocus, Beetlejuice, Don't Look Under the Bed)
Love all your content, I have been invested in film since I was 10 years old. (24 now) wanted to go to film school. After watching so many videos you finally pushed me to create my own movie review channel! Love you bro thanks for the inspiration and constant hard work. Hope to reach your level one day
Cody, you didn't include Screenlife Horror (Host, Unfriended, The Den), though I guess it could be considered Found Footage-adjacent.
Scream will always be one of my top favs; team Stu! I just can’t comprehend how they can f up a story so badly.
I’m glad you have a very different opinion then me when it comes to Extreme horror. Personally it would go in take my money now tier. I like being made to feel uncomfortable by a movie to the point I question if I’m a bad person for viewing it!
Yeah, I don't watch them as often as I used to but sometimes I just need to watch a messed up movie that's going to truly disturb and challenge me. You definitely don't forget them. I still remember watching August Underground Mordum and being physically sick to my stomach after and wondering, "why the fu*k did I just watch that"? 😂
After seeing Abigail I'm thinking it would be cool to see a Vampire 101 video from you...
For body horror, you should check out Brian Yuzna’s Society. And as far as Cannibal Holocaust is concerned, that’s like a found footage/cannibal flick that has a lot more going for it than you would think. More depth to it than I expected at least.
Full disclosure:
I haven’t watched this all the way through yet, but this is the one I was really waiting on!!! My nerd a** is so excited for this 😂
ETA: Loved the special guest stopping by!
Cannibal Holocaust actually invented the found footage Genre! Genius just for that!
Lmaooo a film that has its credentials for sure
I'm so glad you mentioned Revenge with SA Revenge. That's the only one I'll watch (as an SA survivor) and I think it's notable that it was written and directed by a woman.
Two good werewolf movies in my opinion are the howling and howl from I think 2015. Howl takes place in the middle of the woods trapped on a broken down train, maybe for a comedy wolf movie is wolfcop
Sadness is the recent zombie flick that totally blew me away. It's really gnarly and gorey and the intensity of it all as well as a pretty miserable story makes it a real standout in a subgenre. Strong recommendation!!!
Love the ranking!! It's always cool to see someone else's take on the subgenres and give you a different perspective, and totally agree with your take on horror vs thriller.
I may be on an island but I love found footage 😂 It's a Take My Money personally. The one subgenre that makes me feel like I'm there with the characters, which amplifies the horror for me.
Other than that and Kaiju (not for me, but I can appreciate what it brings to the table), I agree with the ones you placed in I'd Rather Chew Glass (altho I did watch the first two Human Centipedes out of morbid curiosity. Never again).
The most annoying part is when people call Jaws a thriller, which makes no sense. There’s no thrills in that movie
RYLEIGH'S LITTLE CAMEO IS THE CUTEST EVER OMGGGG
I love these kinds of videos! Keep up the great work man ❤
Great video! Love your tier list content...i think a good tier list idea would be ranking the kills in the Nightmare on Elm St franchise. I think with the creative ways people die, it would be a cool video to see your thoughts on it 👍
I'd love to see you do a tier list of horror decades, starting with the 70s until present day.
2 tier lists in a row let’s go
The ending of the first Paranormal Activity will always scare the shit out of me, no matter how many times I’ve seen it; you just never know when exactly it’s coming. And the first couple films in the series I still really enjoy and still creep me out. Idk, maybe it’s the nostalgia considering I was a kid when these came out.
A decent creature feature for me is one called creature from 2011, another good thriller or horror is the bone collector, I’m trying to remember this creature feature that had these bug type things kill humans and take their faces. I know this might be a movie with more horror elements but the movie legion with Paul Bettny who played priest. Another good horror like movie is daybreakers
This is a great tier list idea. Kudos!
Very very cool idea for a tier video! Thanks for doing this. 🍿
