In the almost 40 years that I have been listening to and adoring this piece of music, I have never heard a performance / interpretation as splendid as this. As soaring, beautiful and well timed as the 1st recording, along with a few welcome musical surprises. Bravo to the performers and director, Russell Hartenburger. Wow.

i think this is the slowest rendition recorded on youtube or CDs. It's so slow it turns it almost into another piece, just as much about resonance as rhythm. Kudos to their decision to do something different, and doing it so well. Luckily the recording is good enough you can hear lots of details. Really nice performance by such young musicians!

Ladies and gentlemen attention, this may actually open your third eye ...
(I think this very cool and fresh interpretation is just played relax, at the bottom of the time, kind of Northern swing, and for a piece that can appear mechanical it is quite nice, and sweet . )

Is everything correct around 12:31 (corrected by 12:43)? Is the piano supposed to be dissonant? This slow version brings out a lot of nuances, and this might actually be the way the score is written. I felt relieve for the lead xylophone player cause his wrong note at 39:33 turned out lucky, cause it kinda works with the chord.

I'm sorry. Too damn slow. The composer's score (and all his performances) is quite specific and clear regarding the pulse range of 204-210 (which is fairly narrow to begin with), and this pulse is substantially sub-200. I would also note that even at this (too) slow pulse tempo, the percussionists are still performing (in some, but not all, sections) the alternative pulse pattern L-R-L-R/R-L-R-L, rather than the score's preferred one-player-on/one-player-off the pulse 'hocket' indication that other ensembles regularly perform with ease - and at substantially faster pulse tempi...

There is a centre section when the players in the middle should do L/R/R and the other player does the opposing R/L/L.

I've thought about this and I think most performances er on the side of too fast. This is beautifully detailed and confident. I approve.
