    ☞ Ólafur Arnalds
Icelandic composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Ólafur Arnalds explores the crossover from classical to pop by mixing chamber strings and piano with discreet electronics. In addition to forming the experimental techno duo Kiasmos with Janus Rasmussen, Arnalds has produced a magistral repertoire of spine-tingling neo-classical works and film scores since the late 2000s.

    ☞ About the location
Hafursey is a palagonite mountain located on the north side of Mýrdalssandur and near the Katla volcano in Iceland. The lonely Inselberg is surrounded by vast valleys of volcanic sand, sanders, glaciers, and waterfalls that render one of the most special, almost lunar sceneries in the world.
☞ About Hafursey (Yfir) by Ólafur Arnalds (Cercle Records)
« Yfir » ("Above") is a musical journey through Iceland's various moods and seasons. At times, the music swells with a powerful surge, mirroring the crashing waves against rocky cliffs or the thunderous roar of a distant volcano. Other moments evoke a sense of stillness and serenity, echoing the peacefulness found in secluded valleys and hidden fjords near the inselberg of Hafursey.
The song is the continuation of another track written by Ólafur, Undir: “We’ve been playing Undir for 5 years, and rearranged it every time for each set, changing every element one by one. Last year, we realized the latest version of Undir was not the same track that the one we originally composed! On the occasion of our Show with Cercle, I decided to take the track back to the studio, rearranging it especially for the Show to meet Cercle’s energy”.

While I was watching this, my boyfriend came home from work and told me "you're always listening to music that feels like I'm about to die." I laughed and realized that... yes. I do. This music makes me feel like I could die and it would still be okay. It makes me feel like I'm constantly trying to grasp the infinite wonder of this universe but I can never quite get there. It reminds me of how precious life on Earth really is. It makes me feel grief, awe, and hope, all at the same time. I love you Olafur and thank you so much for putting this together Cercle.

The greatest human minds have yet to define consciousness. Perhaps because words cannot express in its entirety. After listening to this, I’m starting to believe this is what consciousness is. It’s a language beyond words. It’s emotion + sound which equals music. It knows no bounds and can encapsulate multiple emotions simultaneously. It has the power to heal. The power to connect people from all over the world. It can make people weep and feel loved. This particular set has made me feel deeply understood. Thank you from the depths of my heart. ❤

It’s hard to express what Ólafur’s music does as a single feeling - somewhere between intense energy and complete relaxation. Somewhere between separating from reality and feeling closely connected. It has a way of conveying a powerful message, without using a single word. I really enjoy coming back to the live performances and seeing how the tracks evolve over time. Art which reflects the inpiration of the moment, rather than using it merely as a backdrop.

Honestly, dudes, this may be my favorite live musical performance of all time. Sending love and positive thoughts to Iceland. I'm in America thinking about all of you and wishing you safety, love, and happiness. I visited Iceland over this past summer and it was after a week in Ireland. I have never been outside North America until this trip and both places were magical to me in different ways. Because of the vast difference in tourism and commerilzation between the two areas, it created a stark contrast that has ever since resonated in my perspective. This song was a song I found during this trip, so I just want the creators of this piece to know how incredibly moved I am by this piece. This is incredible and you all should be so proud of yourselves for your ability to create music like this. WOWZERS DUDES!

Words can hardly express the profound impact Ólafur Arnalds' music has had on my life. During a time of unimaginable emotional loss, his compositions became the soundtrack to my healing journey. Each note, each melody, carried the weight of my grief and gently guided me through the darkest of times.
Ólafur's ability to evoke raw emotions and convey the complexities of the human experience is simply astonishing. His compositions have this uncanny ability to speak directly to the soul, as if he understands the pain and sorrow we all carry within us. Through his music, I found solace, comfort, and a sense of connection that I thought was lost forever.

This music changed something deep inside me, I don't know what, but after listening to only half of it, I suddenly didn't like the regular music on the radio. As if touched by a magic wand. Yesterday, driving in the car, I played the radio, popular music that I often liked to listen to, and suddenly some emptiness. I felt absolutely nothing, as if I was listening to something hopeless, something that is nothing compared to Oraful's music. This set changed me, changed my taste forever. Thank you for this music, for this nostalgia and ineffable longing for something beautiful deep inside me that I can touch when I listen to you, Oraful. It's like feeling a connection with infinity, something unknown and mysterious and at the same time very well known. And the song that starts after 7 minutes is the culmination of this magic. thank you thank you thank you!

I will always remember the day I discovered Olafur Arnalds. It was a cold weather morning in Paris. I wanted to discover new classic, chilling songs and decided to trust my Apple Music algorythm for once. The first song that played was Re:member and I will always cherish the first listening of this song. Goosebumps, tears almost falling in the subway, and most of all a great feeling of peace and ease. I started listening and falling in love with the whole album. But I couldn't manage to just have his music in my headphones, so without great conviction, I searched "Olafur Arnalds concert Paris". There it was, a concert, just a few weeks ahead during the Iceland Week-End at La Philarmonie de Paris. I didn't have a lot of money and the ticket was 50euros but oh man I did not think twice and bought it. I did go, all by myself, and it was the most moving and beautiful concert I could see. I cried in this magnificent place, I could feel the coldness of Iceland vibes and the rays of sunshine that confort you. Since then, I never missed a piece of this great great artist. Thank you Olafur Arnalds, for the tears, for the smiles, for all the emotions that your music provides. 💙

I play this nonstop since four days. I was showing this amazing video to my grandson this morning. I explained him the instruments, the keyboards, the strings and the landscape. He was mesmerized watching and listening, first he asked if there were polar bears, then he said "If you're a musician, you also need a job, right ? He's only four and a half - I wonder who told him that! 😍😂

Having lived in Iceland I understand the incredible impact this place has on it’s people and how they relate to live and art is a direct expression of the connection and awe of nature. It's not the World that's Narcissistic. And it's not the Environment that is Polluted.
It is only your thoughts about it that is the issue. If you seriously think we are all doomed then you need to stand up and be accountable for your own actions. A famous prophet once said " he here that can say he has not ever sinned can cast the first stone"... (this prophet was referring to the men stoning a prostitute) Stop "spreading" verbal harm, and see the real world, and not the one the Cabal want you to see.

Only the Winds really got me this time. Ólafur's music was the first that I felt this strong unspoken emotional connection to. I struggle to explain it but the way only Mother Nature herself can bring you to tears just from the magnificent beauty of landscapes such as the ones we saw here.
Advanced technical ability on a piano doesn't automatically convey emotions and a message. So Ólafur might have called himself a mediocre piano player but there's a simultaneous simplicity and depth to his music and you can feel it when him and the other musicians are in such a flow state as he said.
I'm glad he brought up how much of a composer and musician's work can be for films and shows because that is one of my favorite ways to discover new to me music. I discovered Ólafur's music on an episode of The Originals when This Place Was a Shelter played in a scene.
I had been wanting a performance like this since I first discovered Cercle and it was perfect thanks to everyone's hard work.

this version of Only the Winds made my heart shatter to the smallest, tiniest pieces, dropping off one by one, and then coming back into place, leaving the heart again as a single organ, but with shatter marks still being there. the broken violin is just something words cannot express, together with all other instruments. such music can only be made by people from the cold, nothern countries, with such melancholic sadness of a silent observer. and the video aesthetics is just pure, perfect, and calm. thank you.

A few months ago, I created a playlist titled "Sensationally Approaching a Destination". I have now come to realize that the playlist mostly houses Olafur's Arnalds' music, and for good reason: Olafur's music evokes a sense of wonder and calmness that I cherish so deeply. The music provides a sense of escapism in today's world of buzzing devices, constant notifications, responsibilities, and relationships. For me, Olafur's music takes me out of that world, to the distant Iceland, as pictured here, where I can temporarily escape "life". But as per my playlist, I've also come to realize that, like existentialism, "sensationally approaching a destination" embodies life itself, and Olafur's music continues to impress upon me the importance of meditative practices like listening to his music.

Ólafur Arnalds, for me, is a genius of Icelandic neo-classical music. He enriches his sound gradually, adding just a few new colors from album to album. “Yfir” is a musical wonderful journey through the seasons of Iceland and its color. One moment the music surges with a powerful tide, echoing the thunderous roar of a distant volcano, the next view it evokes a sense of calm and serenity, echoing the peace found in secluded valleys and fjords. It takes your breath away….Oooooooaaa….

Oh, my heart! This music video by Ólafur Arnalds, set in the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland, has left me absolutely spellbound. From the very first note, I was transported into a world of ethereal beauty, where every melody seemed to dance with the wind and every rhythm echoed the heartbeat of nature itself.
As the camera swept across the rugged mountains and cascading waterfalls, I couldn't help but feel a surge of emotion welling up within me. The powerful combination of Ólafur's hauntingly delicate piano and the cinematic imagery was nothing short of awe-inspiring. It's as if the music and the land were inextricably intertwined, each enhancing the other's grandeur.
With each passing moment, I found myself getting lost in the melodies, their intricate layers wrapping around my soul and stirring a myriad of emotions within me. The music seemed to speak a language that went beyond words, reaching deep into the depths of my being.
I was particularly moved by how the video captured the interplay between light and darkness, mirroring the complexities of life itself. The juxtaposition of the vibrant sunset against the looming storm clouds painted a vivid picture of the human experience-full of light and shadow, joy and sorrow, hope and despair. It was a poignant reminder that even amidst the harshest of conditions, beauty and resilience can still thrive.
Ólafur Arnalds' talent as a composer is simply unparalleled. The way he weaves together delicate melodies and intricate arrangements is a testament to his artistic genius. His music has the power to transport us to another realm, where we can momentarily escape the chaos of the world and find solace in the purest form of expression.
This music video has touched my soul in a way that few others have. It has reminded me of the profound connection we share with our surroundings, and the transformative power of music to unlock our deepest emotions. Thank you, Ólafur Arnalds, for taking us on this extraordinary journey through the landscapes of Iceland and leaving an indelible mark on our hearts.

Swept up in the eloquent harmony of Ólafur Arnalds's music and the stunning Icelandic landscape, I found myself immersed in a beautiful dance between the intimate and the infinite. As a native of Java in Indonesia, nestled within the fiery embrace of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the primal power and rugged beauty of Iceland's volcanic wilderness struck a deep, resonant chord within me. It served as a grounding reminder of our shared terrestrial heritage, while the surreal majesty captured by the camera's lens elevated us to the realms of the sublime, unfurling a cosmic waltz of breathtaking contrasts.
This duality of experience mirrored the intricate emotional tapestry woven by Arnalds's composition-a symphony of contrasting sentiments, each note meticulously crafted and balanced within a grand, harmonious framework. The balletic movements of the camera, sweeping intimately across the land and taking grand flight above, unfolded like a visual symphony, subtly reinforcing the evocative pulse of the music. As Ólafur aptly titled one of his songs, 'We Contain Multitudes'; indeed, we do.
Under the gentle caress of the golden sun, the landscape burst into life, with each crevice and contour sculpted into a dramatic dance of shadows and reflections. This visual ballet, a performance in itself, was perfectly timed to the transcendent melody of Arnalds's composition, all set against the backdrop of a sun-dappled day in the wild heart of Iceland. The synthesis of these elements stirred within us a rich emotional mélange, a soul-stirring melody of feelings that resonated across the globe, irrespective of boundaries.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Cercle for curating and sharing this wondrous spectacle. The delivery of this exquisite production is nothing short of exemplary. As we say in Indonesian: 'Terima kasih'.

    *Seedlings of the universe*
    00:00
With the spirit of memory we go to the river to bathe in the ice. Stepping on pebbles and feeling the chill on bare feet. Walking until the water rises to reach the lips. The sound of water rippling through space, its warmth penetrates through skin to the heartbeat. Feeling wonder at the enormous impact of the tiniest movements of fingers. The terrifying majesty of isolation. Loss and joy at the same time.
5:20 Holding breath, slowly allowing the body to fall. Underneath the water is a great ocean, with darkness at the bottom and flickering lights at the top, schools of silvery fish circle, and there is quiet. Letting out more air and descending, descending until there is no more light, and no more air left.
17:24 Let's grow gills and become fish together. Swimming. But I don't know where. We become lost in darkness.
Memories of life flash before me. Crying for forgiveness, forgiving those who made us cry, and crying with happiness for what was.
Feeling humbled by smallness, through humility we can accept ourselves.
Living out a lifetime as a fish, tumbling in between seaweed, corals and rocks, and nothing more.
    Freedom.
24:54 Death. Big fish pecking away flesh until we are just skeletons, pearly bones floating down to the sea floor.
Over time our bones become sand.
Some of the sand washes to the beach for children to make sandcastles.
Some of the sand becomes mud and washes to the shore, giving nutrients to tiny seedlings, soft moss, vast grasses and deep to the roots of immense trees.
38:38 As the grass and the trees breathe there is life again. With great care, slowly lifted up through roots, through networks of capillaries to the canopy and into millions of leaves. Every gentle exhale releases us in to the air. And through the breeze ascending above the trees and the waves, above the mountains, above the clouds and the sky.
    44:10 We see all things.
Jagged peaks laced with snow, bright deserts and dark forests.
The bucking of antelope, caterpillars turning into butterflies, lizards changing colour.
Witnessing the crying of birth and death.
48:58 Smelling the sweetness of exotic flowers from before we were born. A gentle kiss, the warmth of young hands caressed through soft hair.
Every tear, every microscopic wrinkle, every curled lip, every toothy smile, every supressed giggle, all the world's laughter.
    Feeling oneness with all things.
    53:48
Seeing everything and being everything. Getting to say goodbye one last time.
    Feeling whole.
    Feeling peace.
Feeling grateful, because the infinite wonders and sorrows of life are more beautiful than I ever could have imagined.
    I'm not scared.
We can never truly be alone.
We don't die, we just return to that which we always were and always will be.
When we leave Earth, we become the universe..
