It's definitely true that many Muslim women choose to wear the Hijab. And that is of course their right. But it's also true that many Muslim women ARE forced to. Of course many Muslim women living in the free world are able to chose whether or not to wear the hijab, because it is a free country, and in many cases their parents emigrated to escape the oppression of Islam. However if they went back to their country of origin they would be forced to wear it, and would suffer ostracism and sometimes severe punishment for not wearing it. It is my opinion that women in the west who wear it are disrespecting their sisters back home who are forced to wear it. I spoke to a Muslim woman yesterday wearing a hijab on a bus which had broken down, because she didn't understand what was happening. When the replacement bus arrived and I followed her to the door, she stopped and stood aside for me to go out first. She obviously did that because I was man, and she felt that men must go first. I felt that was so wrong, and being an English gentleman, I insisted that she should go first.

Well in Egypt the wife must ask the husband for permission to leave the country. I know because I am from Egypt originally. In Egypt when I lived there women did not wear the Hijab. That came in the 70s'. And some are pressured to wear it.
I'd rather hear about their stance on Sharia law and the Hadith in relation to US laws. If they admit it has no place in a nation of Liberty, then they are not really Muslim since the two cannot coexist. If they wear the hijab _only_ for identity, then it's really no different than getting a tattoo, making it merely a fad that will socially dissipate on its own. I'm East African Christian and we wear head scarf, especially the older generation. We especially wear head scarf in church, weddings, baptism & holidays, but most young generation are ignoring this traditions.

However, I do notice the separation of Eritreans living in the western countries, Mulsims Eritreans only associate with Muslims and Christian Eritrean with Christians, but it is not like that back home, it all love. Btw, many of East Africans have Middle-Eastern blood (either Jew or Arab) because many of our ancestors migrate to East African and mixed with the Africans (interracial marriage). As a black Muslim the most hate I've ever received was from other non-black Muslims, I've been treated as a human being by mostly non Muslims. I like the religion but hate the people in it unfortunately.

I am a native Kuwaiti living in Kuwait and contrary to what you said we don’t have laws forcing women to do anything. I have five sisters. Four of them still don’t cover their hair. My Mom decided to use the cover my last year in high school and ten years later my oldest sister took that decision as well. I can’t prevent nor force them. All of them are university graduates and all have jobs (one of them is a CEO by the way). I spoke to a Muslim woman yesterday wearing a hijab on a bus which had broken down, because she didn't understand what was happening. When the replacement bus arrived and I followed her to the door, she stopped and stood aside for me to go out first. She obviously did that because I was man, and she felt that men must go first. I felt that was so wrong, and being an English gentleman, I insisted that she should go first.

The word hijab is being used incorrectly here. Khimar is the actual word for the head covering. Hijab is the word used for the full Muslim woman's dress which must be loose & long while covering all skin (except that of the the face and hands). Some only wear the khimar with tight and/or revealing clothes below it. This is NOT hijab. Hijab actually means curtain or partition. Hijab protects a woman's dignity and self respect by placing a curtain or partition between herself and the eyes of men. When a man looks at a woman wearing hijab he is forced to focus on her face, not her private body parts.

I appreciate that you want to fight for woman rights, but honestly speaking the majority is not forced to wear it. When you are in a Muslim majority country, you see your mom your aunts your teachers all your beloved ones wear it, so you start feeling it is the right thing to wear it. I came from Jordan and honestly rarely hear that a girl is forced to wear it. The social influence is tremendous and many times unconscious. Even in America that influence is their, you just saw an example of a majority harassing the minority for their choice. Do you know that in some occasions Westernized Muslim parents are forcing their daughters not to wear it especially if they perceive a threat to her or her career!
