I feel like Zoey deserves better and even though she can be as fake as the rest of the group she shouldn’t have to conform to the rest of the girls expectations just because of how she looks and acts🤷🏾♀️
I feel like the reboot really missed an opportunity to show a group of girl friends who have their flaws and are still learning to socialize and deal with conflict amidst the struggles of growing up....but no. The girls just continuously act fake, hypocritical, and never seem to learn anything from these episodes where their friendship is the focus or issues could be properly addressed.
It's kinda hard for me to accept Myron and Zoey together as this sweet couple as if they didn't already make Myron creepy and unappealing previously in the personality department. He hits on every girl at any given opportunity and is fine with spreading rumors for attention, and in the reboot is a crypto-bro and conspiracy theorist. Zoey already rejected him 3 separate times in The End of Innocence, she obviously wasn't interested in him, and it's only by the end of the episode where she's ended it with Noah and is alone that they can act like Myron not having a racial preference for her is somehow a good enough reason for them to be together. It's classically "pair the spares" - everybody else has romantic interests, so let's pair up these two despite them having nothing in common other than the fact that they're both nerds.
Honestly the glasses thing was quite opposite in my school. There where alot of people who wanted to where glasses because it made them look cute and enhanced their looks in a way. You don't know how many people who asked to borrow my glasses in hogh school. I think it also helped that most people I grew up with thought glasses make you look smarter and more put together. I would like to clarify that I didn't grow up in America so maybe that's why our priorities were different. Because people loved the nerds as long as they where not obnoxious.
Bullies have gotten more creative. It's not that some people don't think glasses and or braces look dorky or nerdy, it's just that kids have become far more brutal than saying 'Oh, look at her, she has braces. What a nerd!' I live in the USA and I haven't been picked on yet for having braces and glasses.
Yeah, I was and still am insecure about wearing glasses. I was a bully because I got picked on for wearing glasses, the classic "four eyes". I remember seeing media like Hey Arnold and The Rage: Carrie 2 where people with glasses either got punched in the face with their glasses on or the lens explode into your eyes. Helga Pataki punched some guy with glasses on, it was always a gag.
Thanks for sharing that ‼ That made me remember back in 6th grade when I came in to class with a green pair of glasses everyone wanted to take turns wearing.
I don’t like how nerds are always portrayed as spineless losers, Zoey has been shown to backstab her friends if it makes her more popular, so I don’t pity her normally. I never like how nerds can never be popular
This is a weird recommendation, but I think you might enjoy the show Rise of the TMNT! Even tho they don't go to school, I LOVED their take on Donnie cause he was still a massive nerd but it never stopped him from being one of the most confident and coolest characters I've ever seen! He's quite literally oozing with personality. It's so damn refreshing to see
Real talk, I hated the way the show treated Myron in both the original and reboot. Basically saying it's okay to look down people that need glasses and are social awkward. If anything Penny and the other's mistreatment of him was just another example of how superficial they all are. And I always felt it was a waste because Myron could have been the fourth guy friend of the group ( was including Sticky, Duke, and Michael in that). Oh well, maybe season three will do him some justice.
As someone who was a nerd with glasses and braces, I actually think glasses are really cute on guys. It isn't the death sentence people think it is. I wear contacts because it is more convenient not taking them off and on but I wear them around the house.
Off topic but: Daria is an interesting example with the classic glasses trope. It's interesting in the episode where she gets contacts to drive no one is like wow she's hot now, the most she gets is wow she's trying to fit it, and daria doesn't like that. It was just such an interesting episode of a show from that time where "wow look she took of her glasses she hot now" was so prevalent.
I hate the way they treat Myron and Zoey. Those are the worst friends to have if you can even call them friends. They essentially "adopt" you out of pity. You're looked at more like a human pet than a friend really. If at any given moment you do or say anything they don't like (even if it mirrors their own behaviors) they won't think twice to lash out at you and "put you in your place" because how dare your ugly/socially awkward/nerdy/etc. self act in such a way. Essentially them "befriending" you makes them feel good as if they're doing some form of charity. "I was nice to and befriended the kid no one likes or wants to be around. I did a community service and am a good person." It doesn't help that individual because they're going constantly carry that anxiety and always have to walk on eggshells in fear of being humiliated/berated by their "friends" which could lead to psychological issues in adulthood.
...this literally IS my past friend groups. I was either the "Black" one in the anime group or the "nerd/geek" in the Black group. Looking back, I can definitely see the hierarchy of how others treated me. Like on top of this they'd randomly throw cheap shots at you with a smug because they know you aren't really in a position to say anything back. But yeah, it literally is them "adopting you out of pity" so they look good. I hate it so much.
@@JazzieSimoneArt Yeah being a black nerd it can be hard to get both of your feet wet. That's why I like going to conventions. Hopefully, I can go to Dream Con next year and connect with other black content creators.
We never really had a hierarchy. You had the bullies, the people just trying to get through it, and the people who cared. That was it, with few outliers.
Facts. There’s maybe the leadership kids and the ones that are popular in the sense that they get along with a lot of people but that was it. Nobody’s walking around like Regina George lmao
Its weird how they demonize myron, and dont make him funny unless he the butt of a joke. Bc being a nerd isnt what it was in the 2000s. Especially how nerd hobbies are popular mainstream topics now, with DnD movie, star wars, and the superhero comic characters all being the big pop culture media rn.
The thing is that not only is Myron a desperate doormat, they also made him slimy. I understand Zoey doesn't have a good track record but come on they seriously lumped the "losers" together and not only that, Myron was flirting and basically begging daily at all the other girls in the group before landing on Zoey while she was at her lowest of the low and her self esteem completely shot, only then did Myron take a chance with her. They just did the "nerds" so dirty and this is just the writers way of throwing away characters into the background because they don't know how to write characters that aren't solely loud and rude and petty. So much potential down the drain.
Great Video bro! As a nerd, I have never liked how they portray us in cartoons we are always seen as weirdo or freaks of nature you have the magnifying glasses alluding to us having astigmatisms or visions problems, the plaid shirts, which points to the urkel stereotypes, they love to showcase us as being scary or spineless and allowing people to bully us. On top of that, they love to push this narrative that we are just so ugly and desperate for love. I would have loved if they used his character to point out the peer groups in school and how you have the popular kids vs the nerd kids. That could have been a good episode talking about how your social or popular group predetermines who you deserve to be with or in association with because the nerds are weirdos and expected to be with other nerds because they both are seen as monstrosities who don't fit in and deserve one another. Then you have the cheerleaders or football players who are the pretty people and athletic folks that deserve anything they want. It would have been nice if they used this episode as more of a teachable moment for nerds letting them that they are beautiful just the way they are, they don't have to fit in with other people, align themselves with people with similar interests, and that they should not pursue people that do not respect them or even recognize their humanity.
Yeah, I am kind of afraid to wear glasses, seen too many characters like that guy in Hey Arnold that always stalked Helga. He always got punched in the face with his glasses on.
Spot on abt the false stereotypes. I've met many nerds and one is a pageant winner who's popular on social media, another loves short clothes, parties and gets drunk to coca cola lol, as for the guys majority of them are muscular/toned and play at least 2 sports. Plus I've only ever met 3 nerds who wear glasses
I’ve been wearing glasses all my life. Ever since kindergarten. But it’s kinda funny in American animation characters wearing glasses = ugly in attractive and socially akward In anime… characters wearing glasses= sexy, smart, and have their sh*t together and on top of things.. Like imagine if Zoe got the anime make over… maybe Noah probably sees her in that Anime look
Myron gives me “beat it, chick!!” vibes And my school was kind of a mix. There were social hierarchies/cliques, but there was also a lot of intermingling. Our class valedictorian and salutatorian were “nerds”, but also well-liked. Same with the valedictorian for the class before mine.
I've always hated the glasses make you ugly trope because I actually find glasses very attractive! I also didn't much care for the ending of the episode, instead of Zoey starting something up with a guy that everyone has made her think she deserves maybe the girls could have acted like friends for once and talked about what happened more and ways that they can recognize the same behaviors later on. The entire show all they do is show us how gross they all think Myron is but they think he's fine for Zoey? He's thrown himself at all of these girls at different times and doesn't seem to generally care about them as people. I'm not trying to hate on Myron but just to point out that he isn't valuing Zoey any more than that other guy he just doesn't care what race a woman is if she'll give him the time of day. And now all of her friends are fine with her being caught up with a guy who doesn't really care about her but it's fine because it doesn't challenge them or make them jealous at all?
I won't discuss my middle and highschool experience but I will say this. Through our my life, I've struggled with autism, especially socially. Particularly with girls. Call me an incel if you want, btw. When I would try to address social problems, I was always met with platitude after platitude. For example I started working with a remote yoga instructor (and she was CUTE). When she asked me about my goals, I said I want to be more attractive. She replied with "All bodies are beautiful.". I could feel the steam coming out of my ears I was so annoyed. That was like a tutor asking about your goals and then telling you that they don't believe in grades. I've noticed that there are too types of people who give these platitudes. The first are those of higher social or economic status who seem to not want to acknowledge their status, or make believe that you both are equal so you won't try and compete with them. The second are those who are lower on the totem and use these platitudes to take advantage of those above them, avoiding the consequences of their own actions. As an adult, I've gotten cynical. I've learned that the world operates off of a darwinistic set of rules; survival of the fittest. Or in the case of us humans, survival of the most sociable or charismatic. Life in general is competitive. For us humans, though, that competition is more social. In other words, the rules in life barely change from those in highschool. Social status = options and opportunities. Yet we fail to recognize this basic truth, or we at least pretend we do. Many of the beliefs that we uphold, both within the more traditional christian sense and the more modern progressive sense, contradict the ways of the world. And morality itself, I've found, is more about how one's perceived vs how they treat others. Basically, identity/image = virtue. And there are people who use morality, and virtue, as a leverage to compete for social status, as well to manipulate others. This goes back to what I said before about the two types of people who use platitudes. The Proud family is the type of show that uses these platitudes in such an empty way, all the while using harmful stereotypes and divisive politics. If you actually pay attention, you'll see that the whole show proves my point. It's a world where social status means everything; how successful you are, how much respect you receive, and how good your life will be in general. And yet everyone stupidly pretends otherwise. Trudy and Sugamama will gladly validate Penny in one breath, even when she's the one at fault, and then berate and belittle Oscar in another. The end result of this idiocy is that social dynamics are maintained. Hierarchies are never challenged because those who would have the motivation to do so are taught not to. In fact, Wizard Kelly is the mayor. Who in Hell would vote for this black ass version of Buck Strictland? And screw you, that was funny. The first step to solving any problem is to admit there is one. But nothing gets solved when it's socially incorrect to even do so.
10:54 growing up the way I did was extremely hard! Being a child born with cerebral palsy and having to be in a wheelchair is hard enough in any circumstance, but when you start school before anybody else because they make you start school at the age of 2 because of your disability and then you are held back in school because of all the surgeries that you had to have. I had to be operating on seven times and keep in mind this was the 80s! When I was finally able to be mainstreamed (put into a regular classroom setting) I was already a year behind everybody else. The fact that I was well spoken (always being grammatically correct) did not help much. You can blame my 2 aunts for that they were both English teachers! I was always the class clown when I was little! Once I got out of elementary school and into middle school it hit me. I pretty much changed into someone who figured out that I had to be smart just to survive. Once I got into the 6th grade, I did a complete 180! Once I got home from school, I immediately got to the kitchen table and my mom set up the typewriter just like I asked her to, and I started doing my homework before I did anything else! Sometimes I wouldn't even eat until all my homework is done! I was always a television head so I would be into things like sci-fi! and particularly the news. I need the answer to every question before it was pretty much asked! That did not endure me to anyone once I got out of elementary school into middle school. Once you get into high school it gets worse, I was always called nerd because I dressed a certain way. You only got respect if you were disrespectful to other teachers, and you were the “bad boy”, and I just didn't want to be that way! I may have wanted to play the “kissing” game like all boys my age! Lol but I wasn't considered attractive! I wasn't able to go to school dances the way that I wanted to because we didn't have the transportation and get from my house to the school (unless it was a school authorized field trip) but I kept at it. Now, after it's all said and done, dropped out of high school, graduated college and I became a poet! It really isn't the best environment unless you are able bodied, and you have to embody aspects of the jock and the nerd! It isn't easy but it can be done, and TV shows need to do a better job of showcasing that for black boys, so you don't have to fall into the trap of believing that you have to be one thing or another. You could be equal parts nerd and equal parts jock if you can apply yourself. This is the quandary that lies at the heart of most of the problems in black America! We need kids to have both strength of mind and pure strength of body. We need more people like Myron and less people like Futures.
The trope of "nerdy black dude" in particular rubs me the wrong way not just because it's the "nerd/geek=ugly loser" concept but it also brings in the thing where it's "weird" when black men are into nerdy things especially in the 90s/2000s shows/movies. Whenever there's a nerdy black guy there's almost always jokes from other characters about "how black" they are and they're "acting white". It's like, so what are they saying? Black men are supposed to be ignorant or uneducated by default and can't enjoy nerdy things? There's this maybe unintended message behind the trope that really doesn't sit right with me.
In response to 11:55 my school was super clichey so we didnt have a lot of intermixing when it came to relationships. Also it SO TRUE that when a former unpopular guy gets a girlfriend other girls will get an interest in them. Its really screwed up but the mentality is "oh hes attractive enough to date for her and they look happy so that could be me bc hes been proved as a safe and good partner." However back to the OG point when it came to friendships you could befriend a ton of people from any cliche.
Nerds wearing glasses: law of averages. Quite literally. I was a nerd before getting glasses. And that was before high school. High school was when I got glasses just helped me see better.
My experience is that people like you depending on if you are a hard worker and have social skills. Doesn’t matter if you’re a nerd or a jock. Most people who look and act like complete stereotypes (a weak nerd or a dumb jock) get made fun of because people think you’re weak.
As someone who has always been a bit awkward I have always resonated with the nerdy character of a show. Besides, I have always thought that glasses on people often make them more attractive.
The glasses being unattractive thing has been around since glasses were initially created. If you look into the history of them it’s actually super interesting
The nerd trope is exemplified in The Princess Diaries when Ann Hathaway’s character goes from before to after revamping her image by straightening her hair & removing her glasses. She then gets positive & overwhelming attention & reactions from her classmates.
They make it seem like needing glasses or an inhaler makes you so weird and disgusting. They have to put you in another category as if you are mutants or something. Then forbid that a "nerd" and a non glasses wearing, non asthma sufferer gets together. That would be "wrong".
I don't think myron and Zoey was about them being "ugly." It was him not having a "preference"..... he had a crush on penny and flirted with several girls not based on skin..... they weren't mad because they knew Myron wasn't like that.... Also cj and sticky where nerds...they just weren't stereotypes like that Gonna also add.... they didn't actually have boyfriends.... penny and her guy had crushes... mind you Laci was also stealing him... Dijonay and her guy broke up.. when she found out he was just using her and remains friends But back to it... cj Myron and sticky are nerds.... But myron is a dork and a nerd... the others aren't nerds...
I googled "nerd origin" and it says it was a term made by Dr. Suess in his book "If I ran the zoo", according to the Liberty Science Center. I think the nerd trope became huge in 80s media. I felt self-conscious about wearing glasses in elementary school and didn't consistently wear them until I developed an astigmatism in 11th grade. (I also kept losing and accidentally breaking my glasses.) I was never made fun of for wearing glasses though. I have a little hope for Myron's character, it seems like he has a supportive Mom that encourages his academic prowess and he's dating Zoey. So, I don't think those jabs from Maya and the others will affect him too much. Clowning characters for having asthma, a congested voice or for wearing glasses seems a little ableist to me. 🤷♀
I think with the glasses thing, it’s shown as a negative, as it symbolizes impairment, or a disability to be corrected. Kind of like braces too. Also the reason it’s attributed to needs is number one to show the audience that they’re not desirable/pitiful and also because glasses are often attributed to academics like reading, or science. Also, in my high-school we had cliques, but there was often overlap. There wasn’t exactly a social heiarchy either
Thank you for another wonderful video, Tony! Idk why they always portray nerds with huge glasses and braces, and they always need an asthma pump and talk with a snort. What bothers me is that so-called "compliment" when some people say, "You look like a smart person." And my reaction is like "😕😕😕😕"
Even in the new series, Myron is treated badly well except his potential relationship with Zoey. But honestly it’s well deserved with how much he gets on a daily basis. And it’s such an outdated trope that just because you wear eyeglasses it makes your nerd and makes you unattractive or makes you look ugly. Give me a break. I heard in season three as well they start to delve deep into Myron’s character and hopefully continue his relationship with Zoey. Because he honestly deserves it. And to answer your question, Thank God, in my high school and middle school days there was nothing or no such thing as hierarchy among statuses everyone was perfectly chill but I guess this was a time before social media was a thing. And Also I wear glasses, because I hate contacts.
I always noticed these things so I appreciate you saying it but I also felt there was a hierarchy but there was mixing based on whether nerdy hobbies became popular though it’s weird how nerd is still used in a derogatory term in our so called body positive society
As someone who needs my glasses to function, the whole glasses= ugly nerd trope pisses the hell out of me. My lifestyle dose not allow me to ware contacts and they have so many downsides to them and eye health I am not going to bother warning them unless It’s Halloween. I need my glasses! So why am I labed as ugly for basicly being disabled because that’s what having shit vision is. Same thing with asma, that’s a disability. I feel like that whole trope is just a form of abelisum ngl.
Omg thank you Tony! I have had to wear glasses my whole life. Because of 2000s media, I still, TO THIS DAY, believe that I look ugly with my glasses on and try to avoid wearing them in public. I think that everyone else with glasses looks great. I just can't see myself as anything but ugly with glasses on and I know it's because of growing up with that trope. For over a decade the trope was always: glasses girl is uggo until she takes them off and suddenly transforms into the hottest girl in school or whatever. My partner loves my glasses and has been trying get me to like them. It's just really hard to break that toxic way of thinking. Also like every other social group, nerds can be HOT 💅 just look at Jason Momoa or Henry Cavill. Or just go to a convention lol!
In middle school for me, you’d sit with your friends or the people that you knew in elementary. (And also with your new friends in middle school too.) there was no cliques exactly… But there was the ghetto and the non ghetto, you know? I lived in the ghetto, but I hung out with both sides. The “popular” people were just people that some of the kids knew and would talk and laugh with in the hallways or during the 3 minutes that we had before each class, but that majority was small. There wasn’t really a hierarchy exactly for me.
The idea of myrron turning into an incel is a little extra lol. I think everyone lied a little in school for clout. Just cus myrron did means hes gonna hate women? Nah
The nerd trope always makes me think of that math contest episode from drake and josh where the nerdy guy is adamant that you cant be smart and handsome 😂 The popular kids thing happened more in middle school. Hs was more diverse. So they had a group of popular kids but they were really just super extroverted and talked to everyone. But as far as I know, there wasn't anything like "oh the nerds are uncool and go sit over there away from me peasant!" Type thing Edit: personal fun fact: my grades coincidentally plummeted after i got glasses lol. The glasses had nothing to do with it but its just funny cause of the stereotype around them.
I feel that for Myron, he was defidently drawn and written to be a token black NERD or DWEEBUS character and that episode with him running with that rumor that he and Penny had smooched in that closet during her party defidently focused on like how social structure and perview of peers can change and flip on a dime and that the popular can suddenly be questioned and how the unpopular can rise to become part of the high tier clicks from just rumored speculative word of mouth. I remember also in my High School how there were also the selective tiers and clicks, but it wasnt absolute and that different factors of people can come in and have a diverse and mixed group of individuals in their friend group, but what you said mostly resonated with me and I completely agree with your points and logical sense.
Honestly I’m in my first year of high school so I can’t say much about it, but middle school kind of did have that hierarchy. There were the more popular kids and the more nerdish/weird kids/“furries”/etc And then there were in between Decently popular? Still hung out with some of the popular kids but also the non popular kids. There were also some elevated ones. Those who were grouped into one by some but saw themselves outside of it. Like these friends of mine that were considered weird but were a whole different section compared to the others. Like their own closed off group.
So, there WAS a social hierarchy in my middle school, but it wasn't a clear distinction, like "Jocks on top, nerds on the bottom." It was sort of a mixed bag. It was like... There were the Cool Theater Kids, the Cool Jocks, the Cool Robotics Kids, the Cool Spirit Club Kids, the Cool NJHS Kids. So, like, there were hierarchies WITHIN the groups. You could be in robotics club, and be Cool. You could be in art club and be Cool. That's something that confused THE HECK outta me. Like, say if we're all being silly in the gym. If I (the clumsy kid with frizzy hair) decided to spin around in circles, then I'm being "weird," and "stupid" and I need to stop it. But if one of the girls with manicured nails and perfect eyeliner is sticking a basketball under her shirt, saying: "Look, I'm pregnant!" or throwing herself at the padded wall, then EVERYBODY is laughing, talking about how funny she is.
My problem with the glasses wearing nerd stereotype is that we dumb people with glasses exist too and it’s funny when people expect you to be smart but you have no brains and have poor vision 😅
Me growing up being not only fitting the "nerd" but also being latino. Nobody will talk my way. I cant socialize with my own people because they would outcast me. It wasnt until I moved to a different state is where people started accepting me. My guess it was because this was during the whole anime, comics, dnd were becoming popular trend was starting. I feel there should be a season 3 episode showing that shows Myron inability to interact with people and he values Penny and the gang as his friends. Thus showing them some sympathy and empathy of how it feels not to be included in conversations or not being treated differently by the relatives and community of people around him.
6:54 Im From Jamaica. I use to be self conscious bout my glasses cus growing up, everyone from adults who weren’t family to other classmates use to make fun of me for waring glasses. Calling me Nerd or Dexter n Urkel by adults. When i moved to the US, i didnt get that (im 28 now n i moved here when i was 14) people judged me on other things but my glasses wasnt what they judged me on. Which tank god. I hate that stereotype. Especially cus the reason i had had to start young was cus of an eye injury. On the outside my eye is fine, but now on the inside my eye isnt very developed.
I don’t understand why Glasses are considered and unattractive thing, in fact I used to want glasses when I was a kid, every other girl did, some of my friends even bought fake glasses from Claire’s and would pretend they were real, why does someone taking the necessary steps to help the live comfortably considered ugly?
I honestly agree with the glasses thing. I've always been annoyed that people would find glasses unattractive and whenever a character gets a makeover, they end up removing the glasses because they're pretty now. I might be biased though, cause I find people who wear glasses are more attractive to those who don't.
Agreed, many ppl think I look very pretty with glasses. In my school, the cliques went my social group and race. The black kids had their own cliques. Latino cliques also had their own cliques. Honors students hung out with each other. Same goes for the jocks, the burn outs, band/art/theatre kids, and anime kids. As for the smarts kids. From what I seen many of the brainy kids were somewhat popular. 5 out of the 10 kids, who graduated in the top of my class, where jocks.
In my school everyone had their own groups and will only join others if they were friends/knew eachother because maybe they were bored of their own group or they didn't come to school or some sht happened so they wanna spill the drama out. I wouldn't say there was a hierarchy but you could def tell who were the popular ones cause in every school event they were somehow relevant plus everyone knew who they were. There was def a group of outcasts or 'weirdos' because of their way of thinking/opinions and actions which some can and cannot be justified; if you were the weird one people will constantly go up to you to give you conversation to have more sht to talk about later when you are out of their sight. When I mean some were justified I mean that maybe they had sexist, misogynistic and anti-jew opinions. THOSE in my opinion is a normal reason why nobody would wanna talk to them and be considered 'weird'. Not justified is perhaps someone that writes fanfiction, creates OCs, or some neurodivergent actions that are out of their control.
About 2 years ago at the end of my junior year, I was hanging out in a classroom when some of my friends decided to play music. At some point, a kid id never met before was getting ready to ask me what song to play next, but before he finished asking me the question, he looked at me and then said “oh no! Never mind, you look like a nerd!” He then asked me if I was smart and I told him not really. Now in real life, I’ve worn glasses since I was 7, and I’ll admit, I did look a little nerdy at times, not anymore I think 🤔, I’m also skinny, black, and at the time this happened, I also had braces too. I would say I’m a smart guy, not straight A smart😅 not even close, but when I pay attention and try, I do pretty well. But what bothered me was that he judged me before getting to know me and assumed I didn’t play the same music (rap) he’d play, which I did/do. But instead he took one look at me and thought I didn’t. It also bothered me too how I said I’m not really smart to him cause I was quickly trying to change his mind about me being a nerd. I’ve mostly moved on from that but every now and then it does bother me whenever I think about it 😔.
I grew up in South Africa. My high school specifically was generally lacking in funds, but our school was very diverse culture wise. I remember my friend group specifically had 3 of the kids with the best grades and a bunch of really sporty kids. Our school did have a sort of social hierarchy ,but the kids who excelled is sports or academics usually could fit in anywhere and not have much happen to their reputation. There was this one guy who considered himself a nerd with the glasses and everything (he got good grades and we both played for our school chess team),but even his friend group had people of all different kinds of interests and social standing.
The old saying is "Art Imitates life" this show didn't come up with stereotypes out of nowhere. Some of this stuff happens in real life so I don't take cartoons who show this too seriously because it's just entertainment
For me personally, this might sound crazy but the Chorus and Band kids were actually part of the popular group Many jocks and "attractive" kids were in both musical groups so they in turn became the untouchables. And yeh, it was really weird being bullied by the musical kids.
My group was interesting in the social hierarchy. Our table was where people tended to sit if they were fighting with their friends. We didn’t really tolerate any weird social nonsense, so it was a nice neutral ground until things got resolved. Either they would join our group after a while or go off in a different direction. Definitely the nerd table, definitely not the cool crowd, but I think people liked our vibes.
It’s also a bit ableist too, people think there is something wrong with your body when you put on glasses or any enabling tool and that you’re not healthy or something like that.
I wear glasses and whatever and a lot of people assume that I’m a nerd cause I have glasses and I get all my work done in 15 minutes or less but like I’d say I’m smart but not a nerd and there’s 4 groups at my school the popular people, the nerds/band kids, the sports teams, and the girls who think they’re better and prettier than everyone else. Some are friends with people in other groups and I’m chill with it but the nerds and band kids get so much disrespect and I really don’t like it.
funny thing is. i diden't really get to experience alot of that stuff in high school. mainly i was left out of alot of social groups, projects and so on. mainly not fitting in with the general trends or the whole "we gotta be young and party" and i kinda just keep on asking "why does it have to be like crazy parties" (mind you where i am from the legal drinking age of anything under 10% alcohol is like 16 and 18 for anything above 10%, those laws are currently being changed a tiny bit from 10% to 9%). Now in those days i kinda don't remember much, i think i was just below even nerds i think. then again i diden't grow up to hate anyone really, i just kinda feel like a lonely person who struggles to connect with people due to alot of other factors and being mainly cut off, excluded or outright betrayed by people i thought were my friends. But yea either way, those social things kinda exsist, but as i tried to say, i diden't get to experience much of it due to just not finding it all that interesting to get into a certain role. i mainly just became that "weird" fella that just sits by himself and only gets spoken to when there is needed something of him. Btw neat videos, i did kinda see those trends in kid shows and just in general. sterotypes kinda just hammer home points at times, though if it is done disrespectfuly then yea
My high school was really big and while this is another stereotype but we had a lot of asian kids so we had a pretty big "nerd" table at lunch. We definitely had some form of cliques but none of us were bullied for just being a nerd, people really just minded their own business. That being said I think like maybe 2 people in our 12ish people group didn't have glasses so their is something to that stereotype, it's just that not every single person who has glasses is also a nerd. I think for stuff like animation though, character designs are very intentional because you don't wanna draw an additional things for every frame if it doesn't tell you something about the character. Obviously real people can have glasses without it being a reflection of who they are as a person but when you're animating it, that's a time and money cost. This ends up with the only characters with glasses are the ones who are nerds cuz it tells us something about that character.
I found glasses troop silly since glasses can actually make some people look beautiful or handsome or cute also some people got to wear glasses dosent matter if they a nerd or not
My graduating class didn't have many typical nerds. There were two groups of popular students: the athletes and the preppy mathletes (most of who were also in track). I was probably the closest to being a nerd yet not the stereotype. Even I was more of a geek who hung out with the other geeks. I didn't have straight A's and I sucked at math, but I was great at science. I was the student that others would try to cheat off of or asked for answers. I was still a frequent target of bullying from the jocks, especially during gym class because I am just not athletic at all. Even though my school had a lot of mixing, there was still a hierarchy that was clear. The popular students (especially the girls) wouldn't have given a nerd or geek a chance. At my school, a lot of people didn't fit just one clique, yet the popular students were still jocks and pretty girls.
I remember as a kid having peers tell me I looked better without glasses and was just genuinely confused because personally I feel like I've always looked better WITH them. I don't know if that's a commentary on society viewing things as ugly even when they aren't just to conform to norms or what but it's something I've always found to be really weird. Especially as glasses become more and more of a fashion statement yet we still push this narrative of only nerds needing glasses in a lot of media.
Well I didn't think about that before... I would say archetypes are based on narrative tropes; let's say, a villain with a tragic past is an archetype, because yes, shitty people can have awful upbringings, but in a fictional case it seems to be based on other fictional characters since we need to give an explanation for evil, whatever that might be. And the stereotype is based on prejudices against real groups of people. Idk if I make a lot of sense, it's a bit late as of now. But yeah, archetypes and stereotypes have a blurry line separating them, since they overlap so much. Personally I'm not familiar with the black nerd in media (here The Proud Family didn't even air that much, if any, and vast majority of shows focused on a white cast), so I'm curious whether of the two you consider the trope.
When I was in high school, you had athletes and the cheerleaders and you had the choir kids and the smart kids, that was it. You had an inkling of who was popular but it changed sometimes. I know I was never a popular kid nor was I attractive, I was considered ugly and weird. I had some friends, but they never stuck around for long.
The glasses thing always seemed weird to me because how people look really depends on the style of glasses. Like cat-eye glasses are very different from round glasses which are different from square glasses or rectangular glasses, then there's glasses that are hearts or stars and also glasses that are different sizes. Like my normal glasses are rectangular, but then I have pink heart shaped ones that look completely different. My school didn't really have cliques like that. Some people were more well-known than others, but nobody was really "popular". I don't think I ever knew who was on the football or other sports teams and I only knew one girl was a cheerleader because I had a class with her, but she didn't look like your stereotypical cheerleader. She was well-known due to being a nice person. From what I remember all the well-known people were I guess "popular" because they were sociable and nice.
TBH i like a hybrid i was nerd but i would get into a lot of fights till 11th grade till i stared getting into sports ( wresting , boxing ) because my old head was sick of me getting into trouble. i really did not care about school
Yeah you know what I feel it too. I don't like this stereotype I'm a nerd and I have glasses and I'm proud of it. They're trying to make us nerds look bad. when in reality, we're badass and strong and smart and quite frankly, I think Myron deserves better, including Zoe
You know, unlike that boy from Odder Things who preferred white girls Myron seems to be more accepting of ladies from different cultural backgrounds and who knows with Noah still being in their school and seeing Zoey as a friend, he might develop an opinion on Noah as time progresses cause unlike Noah, Myron doesn’t seem to have a preference. Myron might even be a bit more sensitive because Noah did mess with Zoey. And with the fact that Noah is popular and Myron isn’t that factor could come in to play too. Myron might even come to see Noah as a jerk cause as we saw, Noah had other interests in that other white girl while going out with Zoey who’s sweet.
In middle school there was definately somethign of a hierarchy In high school, it was there to some extent still because I went to a place where there was one high school and one middle school but a bit more nebulous. It was mainly divided by classes - AP kids with AP kids, IB kids with IB kids, etc. and based around what clubs you went to or sports you played which naturally blended some people to different onces still based around being "nerd" and "jock" sorta things. LIke for example a lot of people in the anime club were the typically not conventionally attractive and were the typical geeky/nerdy type. That said, my school was not today volatile but it was a public school in a lower income area. I was pretty passive as a kid and had to deal with people poking me with pens and pencils, pulling my hair, making it known they did not want me to sit with them, knocking things on my desk for no reason, etc. if a rumor boosted my social status to where I wouldn't have to deal with anything like that I honestly wouldn't have said shit either.
Semi related, I’m a living example of the girl with ponytail and glasses trope. People act like I’m a different person when I have my contacts in and wear my hair down. There are people who have genuinely not recognized me. I also happen to be a nerd. As an adult, I know I’m attractive but growing up I was definitely treated like a hideous loser lol.
Hey Tony, it's been a minute. I probably want to get back into Proud Family, but one thing I noticed about Myron's hairstyle is that he kinda looks like Donald Glover back in at least 2010 💀😂 If you can find the pictures, you'll probably know what I'm talking about 💀
Being in my senior year in high school. I can say I don’t really think we follow the natural flow of cliques everyone hangs with everyone and I think rather than seeing the same cliques I see the same friend groups. the “nerds” at our school are really just the smart/bratty white girl friends but I see anyone with everyone I think it’s more personality based than social hierarchy
People just can't stop talking about the colourism episode. You know the episode could have been saved if the story sent the message its ok to have preference when it comes to the types of people someone purses, but it's wrong to turn someone down just because of a preference.
Have you thought about scripting your videos? I love how quickly you’re able to put these videos out because of the organic rant style (reminds me of early youtube days) but I think your points will come across more clearly and more concise if you wrote them down. To answer your question, I’ve had the opposite experience as fictional characters with glasses. I am often fetishized with them on and I don’t like it.
With regards to the hierarchy thing, maybe it's just an autism thing or maybe this social structure only exist in American schools, but I never noticed much of a set ranking order. Of course, there were always the ones who talked loudest, got peoples attention, people cared enough to gossip about, ect. but with my limited understanding of these archetypes I'd categorise them more as class clowns than popular kids. Idk maybe that's just because I find them really annoying. I never understood how these "popular kids" things work. How is it decided who's popular or not? How does one become popular? How are others informed of who's popular and who's not? How does one treat a popular kid any differently than they would another kid? How does being popular make them automatically entitled to better treatment than others, and not being popular make one deserving of being treated poorly? Is there a gray area? What would that gray area look like? Again, this could just be my autism making me not understand social rules, roles and constructs. I don't understand how any one person can be inherently better or more important than anyone else.
Shortly after I got my first pair of glasses, one of my brother's classmates said I "look smart." It was the first time I experienced something like that and it left me with a wierd feeling. But in all honesty, I think I look better with glasses.
Fun fact in most studies studies that have been done atleast when it comes to men attracted to women, Wearing glasses was shown to be neutral or slightly positive in terms of how attractive the girls were rated over the picture of the same woman not wearing glasses. Really the only time wearing glasses is actually considered unattractive is when the glasses are not well suited to ones face.
Im a huge nerd Im talking cosplaying, con going, anime loving, simping over anime men, debating over comic books at my local comic book store nerd that gives you weird history facts out of the blue. My fiance is a nerdy punk man who is just like me but because hd don't look convientally unattractive, people are shocked when they find out we are together. I been wearing glasses since age 6 and i have gapped teeth. Im always getting made fum of but when people see my man, they're shocked he's attracted to me. Its weird. Don't forget om tall, so being 5'11 doesn't help. The nerd trope where if you remove your glasses and you're attractive and not geeky and smart is annoying. I know plenty of dumbasses with glasses. I gotta see! Now in middle school, i was always picked on for being a nerd but in high school i made my own group of whatever and whoever
I have a hard time viewing Zoey as unattractive since the only things supposively unattractive about her is her glasses, braces, lanky, has freckles, and is tall. She's always seemed just as beautiful as the other girls to me.
As someone who wore glasses and got beat up over it, I NEVER liked that trope. And honestly, I am still TRYING to watch that episode, but I honestly don’t think Myron kissing Penny would boost HIS status- it would more likely LOWER penny’s status. And I’ve already said my piece on Zoey and Myron.
I feel like Zoey deserves better and even though she can be as fake as the rest of the group she shouldn’t have to conform to the rest of the girls expectations just because of how she looks and acts🤷🏾♀️
And Penny deserves just as much even though she's one of them. I agree that they are all fake.🤷🏻♀️
@@juliemesser2053 seriously like I hope in later seasons, they all grow as as people, especially La Cienega and Dijana. They really need to work.
@@yeminalovesfood5893or Zoey and Penny unfriend the group and leave them
@bingchungus FOR REAL
I blame Urkel for this. He ruined nerds for everyone.
Interesting take ‼
Lol! Reversal tropes can definitely be problematic, but before then, the common black trope was thug
I feel you on that. Suddenly every Black guy with glasses was friggin Urkel. Just aggravating.
@@TheNeos07 yes, it was aggravating honestly but I did love he voiced sonic the hedgehog 🦔 thank you Jaleel White
Myron was BASED on Urkel if rumors are true.
Because people loved the nerds as long as they where not obnoxious.
its definitely different in the usa. cool that you had a positive experience tho
dude people with glasses were almost always the most attractive ppl istg, like i know they just tryna see but DAMN 😍
You can be a nerd and still be cool/attractive.
I gotta check that episode out. Do you remember the name of it?
Season 2 episode 16 Quinn the Brain
@@TonyTurner The episode is actually called "Through A Lens Darkly"... it is my ABSOLUTE favorite Daria episode!
Why am I rethinking all my past “friendships”.
...this literally IS my past friend groups.
I had those similar observations when I was in high school too
Bullies suck
Right, especially the glasses being whack thing, so 2000s
The thing is that not only is Myron a desperate doormat, they also made him slimy. I understand Zoey doesn't have a good track record but come on they seriously lumped the "losers" together and not only that, Myron was flirting and basically begging daily at all the other girls in the group before landing on Zoey while she was at her lowest of the low and her self esteem completely shot, only then did Myron take a chance with her.
They just did the "nerds" so dirty and this is just the writers way of throwing away characters into the background because they don't know how to write characters that aren't solely loud and rude and petty.
So much potential down the drain.
@@Jane-ow7sr thats what happens when it's all women writers lol
Great points‼
Yeah, I am kind of afraid to wear glasses, seen too many characters like that guy in Hey Arnold that always stalked Helga. He always got punched in the face with his glasses on.
@@Neku628 I mean, he really only got punched because he was stalking Helga. Don't stalk people that you have a crush on and you'll probably be ok
But it’s kinda funny in American animation characters wearing glasses = ugly in attractive and socially akward
In anime… characters wearing glasses= sexy, smart, and have their sh*t together and on top of things..
Like imagine if Zoe got the anime make over… maybe Noah probably sees her in that Anime look
Myron gives me “beat it, chick!!” vibes
And my school was kind of a mix.
Wow. Thanks for sharing that ‼
The trope of "nerdy black dude" in particular rubs me the wrong way not just because it's the "nerd/geek=ugly loser" concept but it also brings in the thing where it's "weird" when black men are into nerdy things especially in the 90s/2000s shows/movies.
Its really screwed up but the mentality is "oh hes attractive enough to date for her and they look happy so that could be me bc hes been proved as a safe and good partner."
However back to the OG point when it came to friendships you could befriend a ton of people from any cliche.
For once I would like an episode where myron stands up for himself
Me too ‼
He needs to pull that Steve urkel moment when he stood up to Laura 😂
The nerd trope is exemplified in The Princess Diaries when Ann Hathaway’s character goes from before to after revamping her image by straightening her hair & removing her glasses. She then gets positive & overwhelming attention & reactions from her classmates.
Perfect example ‼
I always felt like nerds in media was always greatly exaggerated compared to reality and also pretty outdated.
They make it seem like needing glasses or an inhaler makes you so weird and disgusting. They have to put you in another category as if you are mutants or something. Then forbid that a "nerd" and a non glasses wearing, non asthma sufferer gets together. That would be "wrong".
Exactly ‼
He has it a lot rougher than the LGBTQ kid.
Ayyye I’m first! Lol keep it up Tony, I love these analyses!!! ☺️
Ayyyeee ‼ Thanks Julia 🔥
I don't think myron and Zoey was about them being "ugly." It was him not having a "preference"..... he had a crush on penny and flirted with several girls not based on skin..... they weren't mad because they knew Myron wasn't like that....
Also cj and sticky where nerds...they just weren't stereotypes like that
Gonna also add.... they didn't actually have boyfriends.... penny and her guy had crushes... mind you Laci was also stealing him...
Dijonay and her guy broke up.. when she found out he was just using her and remains friends
But back to it... cj Myron and sticky are nerds....
"I'm hideous! Where's my asthma pump!?" Lmao 💀
😅😅😅
What bothers me is that so-called "compliment" when some people say, "You look like a smart person." And my reaction is like "😕😕😕😕"
Right I got that one a lot. I always used to say "I'd rather look smart than dumb"😏
@@TonyTurner aye! That's a nice one!
But wait! Nowadays, people are really out here wearing glasses as a TREND. Like, legit LIBRARIAN/TEACHER/DORK friends with PLAIN GLASS in it! Omg!
True ‼ Retail stores even sell them for a fashion look
Nah
Lol some ppl were really saying that. They think Myron is a characterization of the guys who would grow up with a love life complex
The nerd trope always makes me think of that math contest episode from drake and josh where the nerdy guy is adamant that you cant be smart and handsome 😂
The popular kids thing happened more in middle school. Hs was more diverse. So they had a group of popular kids but they were really just super extroverted and talked to everyone. But as far as I know, there wasn't anything like "oh the nerds are uncool and go sit over there away from me peasant!" Type thing
Edit: personal fun fact: my grades coincidentally plummeted after i got glasses lol. The glasses had nothing to do with it but its just funny cause of the stereotype around them.
😅😅😅😅
I feel that for Myron, he was defidently drawn and written to be a token black NERD or DWEEBUS character and that episode with him running with that rumor that he and Penny had smooched in that closet during her party defidently focused on like how social structure and perview of peers can change and flip on a dime and that the popular can suddenly be questioned and how the unpopular can rise to become part of the high tier clicks from just rumored speculative word of mouth. I remember also in my High School how there were also the selective tiers and clicks, but it wasnt absolute and that different factors of people can come in and have a diverse and mixed group of individuals in their friend group, but what you said mostly resonated with me and I completely agree with your points and logical sense.
personally i think ppl who wear glasses are cute as hell
Honestly I’m in my first year of high school so I can’t say much about it, but middle school kind of did have that hierarchy. There were the more popular kids and the more nerdish/weird kids/“furries”/etc
And then there were in between
Decently popular?

Im From Jamaica.
I am BINGEING your Proud Family analysis videos... LOVE the analysis... YOU GOT A NEW SUBSCRIBER!
Thank You ‼🔥
Agreed, many ppl think I look very pretty with glasses.
There were no labels/clicks in my schools. We just hang out with whoever we want.
For me personally, this might sound crazy but the Chorus and Band kids were actually part of the popular group
Many jocks and "attractive" kids were in both musical groups so they in turn became the untouchables.
It was like there were different cliques clicking together.
Ive always been called cute when I wear glasses! Imagine calling disabled people “ugly” for wearing or using an enabling tool, SMH
It’s also a bit ableist too, people think there is something wrong with your body when you put on glasses or any enabling tool and that you’re not healthy or something like that.
i remember Marc from Kenan and Kel was a nerd character but he was fairly popular and liked by everyone except Kenan who found him annoying
I grew up with this so this is probably what painted the show in a massive negative light for me. (Its a me problem i know)
I’ve heard that they make you look smart which can be a form of attraction.
Tech savvy is even cooler now but then when it was new
My high school was really big and while this is another stereotype but we had a lot of asian kids so we had a pretty big "nerd" table at lunch.
Zoe not ugly though I actually had a crush on her as a teen
Isnt that narrative mostly in western media
Imma ask everybody this question: Where do/would you draw the line between ARCHETYPE and STEREOTYPE as far as characters, traits, etc?
I also think the 90’s nerd thrope is stupid. 😂😂😂😂
I kind of doubt Noah’s going to appear again… he was pretty much a macguffin.
In middle school there was definately somethign of a hierarchy
In high school, it was there to some extent still because I went to a place where there was one high school and one middle school but a bit more nebulous.
I probably want to get back into Proud Family, but one thing I noticed about Myron's hairstyle is that he kinda looks like Donald Glover back in at least 2010 💀😂
If you can find the pictures, you'll probably know what I'm talking about 💀
I wore glasses and I wasn’t considered the attractive type in middle and high school!
If we get another season there should be a episode where Myron stands up for himself and put penny and her friends in their place
I wish Sticky would come back. Disney and Orlando Brown need to work it out!
ASAP‼
I wish sticky would come back to so we probably could see 15 cent
I know what you mean. Some ppl say that like a backhanded compliment. But I'd rather look smart than like a dummy 😅
I honestly believe that the hierarchy is a myth.
Hey tony great video you lookk same with or without the glasses nice choice for a shirt wink
Thank You ‼
Great videos I'd love to see more content on the proud family
Fun fact in most studies studies that have been done atleast when it comes to men attracted to women, Wearing glasses was shown to be neutral or slightly positive in terms of how attractive the girls were rated over the picture of the same woman not wearing glasses. Really the only time wearing glasses is actually considered unattractive is when the glasses are not well suited to ones face.
Still waiting for the pebo talk because because he hasn't changed at all.
Im a huge nerd
Im talking cosplaying, con going, anime loving, simping over anime men, debating over comic books at my local comic book store nerd that gives you weird history facts out of the blue.
