Actually, a lot of people don't realize this but BRATZ is highly influenced by urban culture, specifically in black and brown communities. When those dolls came out, I remember thinking how much they looked like my older sisters and cousins. The full lips, the make-up style, the fashion, etc. If you want to see the inspiration from bratz, simply look up the fashion styles from black/brown girlies in the 90s/00s. In fact, if you look up the fashion lines and styles from the clothing brand BABY PHAT, you'll see how inspired they were (which has inspired by a lot of fashion styles in today's day and age. The nails, the lashes, the "brown girl" make up).

I love Madison so I’m probably bias, but I find it so weird that she’s always made to be the villain. It’s especially weird being as she’s the only darker skinned character, and during the era my scene was popular it was super common to demonize Black and brown women. The Hollywood movie especially felt icky with the way the white characters feel Madison should be acting more humble, and feel entitled to the same opportunity she received. The whole treatment of Madison just feels micro-aggressive as a girl that looks like and always related to Madison.
i totally agree!! i also think its interesting that even in their attempt to diversify the barbie brand, they made madison medium skinned, blue-eyed, and light-brown haired (though she most likely lightened it); meanwhile sasha is most commonly depicted as dark skinned with naturally dark hair. like, MyScenes darkest girlie looks like yasmin but they STILL demonize her 💀
Does anyone else remember that you could get a DVD of Masquerade Madness for free? If you went to the My Scene website and put in your address, they would send you a copy! I got one for free and felt like I'd won the lottery because DVDs were expensive back then.
I got mine as a gift and didn't know anything about the show before hand, but gosh I watched the dvd every other day and sometimes back to back. I was obsessed with the outfits but specifically Madison's butterfly costume and the dog costumes. I still have my dvd in storage!

My highschool/early college friends had a love/hate relationship. Yes we talked about each other but together we talked even worse about others. Honestly lil gremlins.
I actually know a lot about dolls and Mattel actually was upset for another reason. Carter Bryant, the creator of Bratz, used to work at Mattel when he created Bratz. Now, he never pitched the dolls to Mattel and he created them while not even being at work (he left his position at the time and went home, finding the inspiration when going by his former high school), and later returned to Mattel, but never pitched the dolls to Mattel. He later moved to MGA and they made them. So Mattel thought they owned Bratz and that’s why all the legal crap happened (and they did get ownership of Bratz for a short time, until the court ruled against that ruling). But I mean, Mattel is a snake of a company, stealing ideas from other brands (Gem and The Holograms and Bild Lilli, the doll that Barbie stole her identity from), letting shareholders make the dolls cheaply made and over pieces them (that why MGA dolls have tons of outfits and have better hair, because they don’t have shareholders), and the fact they made a bad Barbie film (like I’m not talking about that the feminism stuff, I’m talking about how the film has three different genres, none of the characters are really that interesting, and the fact the film contradicts itself many time, when there are plus size dolls but Sasha aka Bunny Boo (🙄) tells Barbie she makes people feel bad about themselves since they don’t look like Barbie dolls or the fact Barbie’s feet are flat…when there have been flat feet Barbie’s since the 1970’s and that Barbie has actually made dolls with flat feet in many lines for the past decade). I mean it’s not that bad of a film, but definitely should only get awards for costume and set design. But yeah, Bratz are better in my opinion, but I do think MyScene was a cool brand and I feel bad the reproductions are look cheap and are overpriced.

@ Hasbro made them and Barbie and the Rockers was rushed in to production fast to compete with them (and it was in Barbie’s hay day, the 1980’s, which is why Burdine in the Bratz films/tv show was like this woman who was popular in the 80’s) so I think that’s why Jem didn’t do as well as she should have, but thankfully the show did well. But I mean it’s definitely Mattel, they do good, I don’t think the dolls and all are bad, but I know the company is a bit slimy (even MGA has been too, it’s common). I actually don’t hate the film, but the plot to me is just all over the place and I’m not someone who cares about films like that (like an ok film could be my favorite), but I see what they were doing and I don’t get why it feels like 3 different genres (a fantasy/action adventure/comedy then a political comedy then finally a serious dramedy at the end). And people actually were really rude last year when I pointed out my thoughts on the film and I got the, “of course a guy didn’t like it” kind of reaction, despite I tried to address my issues weren’t really with that. I enjoyed a bit of it (especially the banned dolls), but I just think people latched on to parts of it and get upset when people address they didn’t like it. I just don’t think it’s award worthy (like a lot of films that get awards), especially when the acting wasn’t like Margot nor Ryan’s best work, pretty sure the director has films that are a little better, but the sets and the costumes (which Mattel didn’t really make any of the good ones for the dolls) were amazing, I definitely think those should have been nominated for something. And I don’t like that Billie Eilish song, I don’t think it was that good (especially outside the film, like people acted like it was the best song of the year) and I’m sad, because I feel Billie really could have made something interesting, like Birds Of A Feather, which I also think that song matches the movie a lot better.
