    ◼ SHOW NOTES
    The Cubase 13 Upgrade receives a lot of hype but i don't see big innovations here. Of course, we're still talking about Cubase which is - according to many - the best DAW in the world. So i'm complaining on a very high level.
    I had my reasons to spend 100 Coins on the update (from Cubase 12 Pro to 13 Pro) but i also can understand people who don't want to upgrade for whatever reasons. Because this update is a bit mediocre imo.
    I cover the unnecessary design change, the most overrated feature, more disappointing things but also some of the good stuff in C13, like the most underrated feature and other positive things.

    I have a made a couple of videos demonstrating performance issues with certain VST instruments/plugins and Cubase 12/13. I am pretty disappointed that these issues haven't been addressed in 13 (or even in 12!). I have also found a couple of workarounds for the performance issues if anyone is experiencing them. Hopefully Steinberg can get to the bottom of it and the next maintenance update addresses most of the bugs.

    G'Day, Marcus. There was a lot of hype around Cubase 13's launch. You, and "One man and his songs" have both given realistic, balanced perspectives. Definitely mediocre for my use cases at the moment. There's nothing in this update to make me rush out and buy it, I will wait for at least one maintenance update, possibly more. Some nice changes to MIDI editing that I will find useful, including the grouping, which I have heard mentioned for the first time in this review! I will be getting Iconica Sketch in the next Dorico release anyway, so I can wait for that. Lots of users have complained that the new colour scheme for the mixer is hard on the eyes, some previously existing features have been removed or broken, and as usual, many people are experiencing crashes on a system that was working perfectly with Cubase 12. There is an expectation that there will be a maintenance release before the end of the year.

    Good video, thanks for your content. I personally like the new GUI but I have limited experience with DAWs and only been using Cubase since version 11. I couldn't agree more about the Amp Rack, I am sure that this could benefit from a modern upgrade. I am primarly a bedroom guitar player and Cubase for me is means to record at home for non-professional use so a good built-in amp simulator would be great.

    Like you I only upgraded to Nuendo because it was cheaper. I think it's snappier but hardly use it because I've switch to Logic Pro X. Better for arranging music, programming drums, woring in surround formats and less of a headache to setup. Honestly I can't think of a reason to go back to using Nuendo/Cubase anymore and probably would save my money if they do upgrades like this in the future. Great video btw!

    C13 is more about great > workflow improvments! I like the new GUI. With a litte tweaking it looks good and modern.
    And this is exacly what I want. I don´t need fancy stuff like clip nmodes or modulation in every directions (If you like such crazy stuff, Ableton or Bitwig is your friend to go).
    C123 is very stable on my systems. The new onstock fx and the new 5 GB FREE orchestral Iconica stuff is very nice to have and sound very good.

      So far, I also don't have performance issues, and yeah, Iconica is great.
      I don't agree with the 'modern' look, because design is highly dependend on personal taste imo. The same with Workflow improvements. What works good for you might not work well for other people.

    I'll stick with 12 Pro. I have no workflow issues w/12.
    13 really isn't offering much besides a new gui and stereo/mono track of which none of that matters to me.

    I was late for the party to upgrade to C11, and it blew me away. It was a revolution to me. Then C12 was released in my grace period, and was a no-brainer (and no-dingle-dongle) upgrade. Then they gave me Arturia's CS-80 for free as a little surprise, and I was over the moon, yes! Now with C13, the string library sounds great but, for my own mediocre classical aspirations, BBCCO from Spitfire does the job, and it's free... You're right, this is no more than C12.5, and I am not upgrading as I'm not eligible for a freebie. I like to occasionally play around with a vocoder but then again I have got hardware for that rarely used effect. I also use 3rd party Pultec style EQ's already, and the extra tab for the channel? Sorry, I couldn't even imagine for a second to not mix with 2 screens and you can find a second fully working 16:9 screen by any skip near you!!!!! 🤣Sooooo... well, I am fairly positive I may upgrade in a year when C14 drops but for now, C12 does everything for me. To cut a long story short, they are a great team of developers but I am OK for now.

I'll wait till they do the usual 30% off later, maybe... the vocoder would be the only thing that I am interested in. And why do Dev's never keep the the old visual settings as an option? Some of us like it that way.

    These are 20 year old features (left hand channel slider) that is from CUBASE SX 1- 1.06.
    And mixing midi tracks into groups is also a 20 year old features. The "new visual layout" and use of pop up windows are also from the original cubase sx 1.0.
    Sounds like and looks like a money grab upgrade.
    I will probably get static from cubase users.
    However I have used all versions up to cubase 12
    I still run an old win xp computer with cubase sx 1.06 aswell. For older projects and to convert older project to .cpr files.
    Anyhow my observation is that they RECYCLED old deleted FORGOTTEN user features which were there back in 2002.
    It's not even a side step upgrade, looks to me like regurgitated old retro vintage user functions and visuals.
    Hardly deserving of a Cubase 13 title/name. More so should have been released as a cubase retro package.
    Very disheartened to see the new 1000 dollar software to new users or 150 buck upgrade to existing users has done little to nothing to improve anything. How do they justify the upgrade? Or " NEW" title. Seems like a way to remove compatibility with old VST instruments and or plug-ins. As computer technology is rapidly changing they write programs to run on the new latest OS. Be it Linux Apple or Microsoft.
    Don't get me wrong steinberg has done well with keeping our existing versions compatible with new hardware. (Drivers etc)
    I just don't see anything new worth the upgrade fees.
    Visually yes I prefer the old versions of cubase (closer to the new look of 13) but hardly worth the upgrade when I seems like only yesterday we paid for the improved look of 11 and 12 etc...
    In the end they don't tell you the compatibility features that are silently removed. Be sure they are there for us users to find.

    I don’t mind the new look of the UI but I still use Cubase Elements 9 as it serves me well as it’s good enough for me. The only thing I wish Steinberg would do is give the ASIO standard a much needed overhaul, some quality of life improvements are needed for the future. If they would modernise the standard to make it possible to use two ASIO drivers at the same time to separate the recording device from the playback device I would totally upgrade. ASIO still beats the native windows audio drivers in I/O features but in some ways it’s kind of stuck in 1997 beeing limited to a single device model. These days instruments with built-in USB audio interfaces are a thing and I just want to be able to use my Roland TR-6S together with my Steinberg UR-242 interface at the same time without having to use ASIO4all. Having to switch drivers gets a bit inconvenient at times. Steinberg used to be very innovative but they have totally forgotten about ASIO for so many years. I love Cubase and I hope they dust off the ASIO standard some day.

    Nice one,I enjoyed this video ... The changes to the mixer are not for the user ,IMO, I feel this is more about the programming and integration with operating systems, I have only limited experience of other DAWs but it seems to me that cubase is now looking more like all the others, as opposed to everyone else trying to look like cubase, as in the past. A bit like cars, they all look the same these days, but thats just my opinion, cubase user since Atari days😀A lot of people are like me, long time user, so change is hard, we have our workflow and any change means this old dog has to learn some new tricks, so some us will have a little bark every time there is an "update".

    I have the same mindset when upgrading - better pay a smaller update fee here and there. When it comes to Cubase 13 I think it will be good 1: when I can run it (horrible graphic glitces all over) 2: I get used to the new design . I wish the majority of new features was workflow and stuff integrated into the Cubase GUI/workflow. I don't care anything about their VST plugins as I have way more plugins than I can ever use

  • @homo192
    @homo192 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    When your goal with upgrading annually is to cut down costs, although you're not in need to always using the latest version, then you're actually doing the opposite: Burning money is what you actually do. To avoid huge upgrade costs when only upgrading once in a while, you can purchase now and then simply sit on the license for years. When you activate a Cubase upgrade license for the first time, you are always allowed to use the most recent version of Cubase, regardless of what version upgrade you originally bought. This way you pay only 100 coins (or 50 on sale) and may skip some versions. For example what I will do next is buy the upgrade in spring '24 when the come out with theyr usual offering, then stay happy with the beautiful GUI of C12 for another couple of years and then have a look if maybe C15 will be worth switching. So I upgrade from C12 to c15 for 50 coins. I don't feel any need to waist 100 precious coins year by year just to feel somewhat fancy.

    • @thegroundnoise
      @thegroundnoise  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You did some serious math here :D
      Upgrade from older versions than the recent one is 200 coins. But at least you don't have to buy a new full version. Are they really doing 50% sales? I wasn't aware of that :o

    • @homo192
      @homo192 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@thegroundnoise If you upgrade directly from e.g. C11 to C13 you pay 200 coins. That's true. The trick is, not to do this. Instead, you should have bought the upgrade from C11 to C12 and only activated it when C13 came out. This way, you automaticly are free to use C13 (and have it officially activated), even though you only paid for C12. All you need is some patience. Got it now? ;)

    I agree I liked the 3d screens in cubase 12 pro. Easier on the Eyes.

    I would like them to add a screen dedicated to live tracking with only the need information on the screen in an analog mixer format.

  • @itstobitan
    @itstobitan 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Good video, but yeah... It's all subjective, of course.
    GUI: I think the new "old" look has a lot to do with the overall performance of the program and the advancement of processors and UHD screens. Besides, I don't want my processors occupied with the program's display; I'd rather see the performance become more stable and quantitatively better. So, for me, it's a logical step - aside from the general trend in the digital world toward clear style lines.
    Fader Window: This feature is quite valuable, especially if you're professionally involved in pop music. This feature significantly speeds up the workflow.
    That's something you can't ignore. It might not interest a hobbyist, but let me tell you: time is money.
    Guitar Player: Yeah, that might be unfortunate, but most guitarists I know curse all digital solutions for them anyway. That's why I believe the demand for it is simply too low.
    Vocal Chain: More and more upcoming producers are working in electronic genres. Vocal mixing is one of the most searched topics on TH-cam among new producers! It's a logical move for Steinberg to focus on this feature. That was just a good idea! It might not interest you, but it's a big deal in the young community.
    Midi and Audio into Groups: What are you talking about?🤔I've been doing that for over ten years?!? Maybe even 15 years!!! Or did something get lost in translation here? I've always been able to group things like VST synths and guitar recordings and work within those groups, at least since Cubase 5. I don't get it. Or maybe I misunderstood you.😉
    All in all, your criticism seems somewhat unnecessary because, after all, you still have all the other features you probably enjoy. So, you can still use Cubase. Most features are optional. For me personally, three things are real game-changers - and that's why it really is about this "game." As a professional producer, I used to use a different DAW as a precaution to enhance the workflow for certain artists/genres. And gradually, with the updates since Cubase 11, I've been able to stop that. Those are arguments in favor of Cubase.

    "I'm not sure if it's a big game changer" Why would it need to be a "game changer"? The game is the same, composing and sequencing music. I don't want my DAWs to change any game, I just want them to improve their tools and workflows slightly, introduce some new built-in effects, and so on.

    I'm not a young Cubase user but as a retiree I use it A LOT. Cubase 12 Pro is an amazing piece of software and I was really impressed with the list of C13 workflow improvements until I just saw the GUI on the C13 trial version. OMG! I wear glasses that are set up for my screen distance BUT NOT the C13 bold white and tiny fonts. Completely unusable on my 23" screen. IF SB brings in an option that allows me to use a C12 GUI then I'll upgrade otherwise ...

    Hmm, with Logic Pro X you don't pay for any upgrades (while they are in the same league - Cubase and Logic, that will say). "Upgrading every year with Cubase" becomes a no-issue with Logic. At least, this is why I went completely Logic Pro X, after been using Cubase and Reason for years. I finally don't have to care.
    Interesting video though; keep up the good work! 🙂

    You're complaining about the fact that there are new effects like great vocal compressors or coloring EQs. Otherwise you've been complaining that there isn't a new vst amp.
    I prefer the new C13 effects, there are enough different vst guitar amps on the market for all tastes. the onstock vst amp in Cubase is a good one. Only metal hi gain tones are not included.

    • @thegroundnoise
      @thegroundnoise  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've made very clear that i'm not reading the feature list from the Cubase Website. Also, this is about what's included in the update and not what's available on the market. There are also tons of compressors and EQs on the market.

    Don't usually care how things look but there is a basic user interface design 101 with many things that relate to our brain/eye coordination. Steinberg keeps missing these basic things and have really dropped the ball on 13.

    I think the biggest let down is it's still just as unstable. Id prefer a rock solid program on my M1, compared to a flakey, fancy looking program. 3 full on crashes in less than 3 hours of use. Got my money back and will stick with Logic.

    I was really pissed off about the new modern (flat) look of Logic Pro X 10.8 (everyone's trying to copy Ableton, thinking it's what young people like, just as Roland, Yamaha and Korg have been copying Nord keyboards). But seeing Cubase 13's GUI made me realize how lucky I was. Who are those GUI graphic designers? They should be designing Gucci shoes, not DAW GUIs.

    There's no way a significant UI change would happen for marketing purposes alone. And I doubt the engineers would tolerate gratuitous revisions. To me, 13 looks like groundwork for the next 2 to 3 revisions.

    I don't see any readings to spend money for version 13 and the GUI sucks. They finally shall implement modulation features to helm the parameters of VST, like in Ableton live or Bitwig and other DAW. It's a shame we can't use complex LFO routing in Cubase. I'm getting pissed by the Japans.

    I don't think its complaining on a high level. Things like changing the UI or not letting people choose the way their workstation looks are really important things because the influence our whole experience and how effecient we are using Cubase. Looking at the type of things steinberg chose to "improve" or the type of new content they deliver tells you a lot about their thinking and priorities. The thing that bothers me the most is that we get a couple of good things and then some really bad things. Thats not an upgrade. That's a downgrade, really.
    Oh well..

    Are there any other users here who are suffering from the software's ability to Work with Plugins that consume more processing power and that way it Reaches overload very quickly.?
    Does anyone know if this is because the base of the software has not been Upgraded and only additions and upgrades are added to an old " engine "
    For example, the amount of sends per channel is not increased,
    If the Software was upgraded from the base it would have already been Increased.........?
