    It is a device that redirects the sound of the guitar into Gilmour's throat rather than out an amplifier. His guitar is Literally singing for Gilmour. He then shapes the sound with the shape of his mouth.

    Peter Framton probably has the most famous voice box reputation.
    But Gilmore's style is soo cool!

    Greetings from Niagara. A banger about a nervous breakdown, bolstered by Dr Stephen Hawking's voice apparatus (loaned to Pink Floyd). Oh- and David's talk box effects. Peace, love and bellbottoms.

    Pink Floyd have always been experimental.
    For Echoes live in Pompeii, 1971, David plugged his guitar directly into the organ.
    The Leslie speaker was used either directly or as the organ speaker or both.
    Have heard that they sometimes played the organ through the guitar amps, etc etc.

    The look of your shock, then enjoyment. Love it.
    He did all of his talking with the guitar since his words don’t come out right. Do their opener SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND….their signature song in honor of former band member Syd Barret who fried his brain in conjunction with schizophrenia.

    This is my first time ever hearing this song and just from hearing the beginning this is an amazing song. Pink Floyd was another group that came up with such amazing songs. I have always enjoyed the songs I have heard from them and I am glad I am hearing this song for the first time. You can tell this is a deep song and I appreciate listening to this group when I was younger.

    Ok dude. As a musician with over 50 years of experience I'll explain the "voicebox".
    At the base of the mic stand there's a box with a small speaker inside.
    A hose runs from the box up to the mic. when a footswitch is pressed the guitar is diverted to that box.
    the sound travels up the hose, into the mouth where the guitarist can then shape the sound.
    The vocal mic then amplifies it in the usual way.
    This is the predecessor of the computerized "auto-tune/vocoder" that's been overused by people who can't sing.

    • @aidandavis9032
      @aidandavis9032 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Does a "wah" pedal work similarly?

    • @coot1925
      @coot1925 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@aidandavis9032 no. The wah peddle shapes the sound by electronics. Voicebox shapes the sound waves by physically projecting sound into the mouth.
      One can actually speak words with it.

    • @aidandavis9032
      @aidandavis9032 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@coot1925 I figured that was the case, I'm just curious as a guitarist that is learning electronic sound design. I possibly should have worded it differently; how does a wah peddle use its electronics to shape the sound? Is it frequency modulation? Is it technically a phaser? It's a very interesting way of manipulating sound, but always confuses the hell out of me lol 😅

    • @coot1925
      @coot1925 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@aidandavis9032 it's basically a tone control. When the pedal is tipped back it cuts the high frequencies and gives a more "muddy" or blues sound.
      As you tip it forward with your foot it increases the high frequencies and gives it a more shrill rock sound.
      Jimmy Hendricks was a master of the "Cry Baby" wah peddle.
      Let me know if you have any more questions and I'll try to help. I play 7 different instruments including drums/percussion and done a lot of studio and live work mate.
      ❤✌🏻🇬🇧

    Love the talkbox. it was big in the 70s. Musicians such as David Gilmour on "Pigs"; Joe Walsh on "Rocky Mountain Way"; Chaka Kahn and Rufus, "Tell Me Something Good" on The Midnight Special; most famous is Peter Frampton on "Do You Feel like We Do"; but I think the best performance using the talkbox is by Rob Walker from Stillwater performing "Mind Bender" (at Eddie Owens presents).

    I think before you do Great Gig in The Sky. It will blow your mind to find out who Sam Brown is. The biggest pop star in the world cancelled her world Tour to be a backup singer for Pink Floyd. That kind of respect will never be forgotten. And she kills it.

      I love Sam Brown but I think you're over selling her a bit as "the biggest pop star in the world". Most average listeners have never heard of her, although I believe she's criminally underrated and deserves to have much more of a general following than she does.

With that being said PLEASE PLEASE AND PLEASE do a reaction to CANDLEBOX-[1993] FAR BEHIND and/or YOU. Awesomely short lived commercially. Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking. But its greatest failures by not talking.
    As when we look at what is happening in Ukraine and Gaza, “It doesn’t have to be like this”.
    To prevent such horrors from happening again and again, “All we need to do is make sure we keep talking... talking... talking.”

    I believe David Gilmour used the talk box back in the 70's on the Animals album.. pigs if I'm not mistaken.. This song you reviewed here was released in about the same time as this concert.. so quite a bit of time in between those songs.. He may have more that I'm not aware of..
    ALSO, Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains fame uses it in Man in the Box.. its a little more subtle but can be seen if watching a live performance ..
