But then Aemond had to pull a dumb dumb move and got Luke killed. After that, she decided to fight for the throne. But she didn't want the kids involved.

The show may make a big deal about it, but seriously look at the scene of the ratcatchers... no one cares outside of the immediate family. Even the guy eating who asked what happened? Didnt care after he was told. When they took Jaeharys body, people were piling up, crying and very upset. The PR hit shouldnt be as bad as much they gained.
They had hundreds of smallfolk murdered by rhaenys. If they make the rat catchers one of the reasons the smallfolk get mad, then I dunno. The show has already butchered most of the greens anyways.

I'll be honest in saying that i'm glad season 2 has been showing more humanity from Aegon. Season 1 in my opinion, tried to make him too unlikeable, so I'm glad season 2 is making him a more 3 dimensional character. You can tell me clearly loved his children and wanted to be a good King (probably could've been if he wasn't neglected by his parents), but this assassination has destroyed any chance of peace between brother and sister
