This is fantastic for my spouse who is going through chemotherapy. The masks are gone in the hospital, and even in the oncology waiting room, cancer patients and their caretakers are without masks. My spouse and I each wear one, and have been encouraged by the hospital to take them off! Okay, fine. But when you wear them in public--people confront you. 'You don't have to wear masks anymore.' Trying to explain the cancer and people getting in my face, screaming. I am literally laughed at at best, but accosted at worse. And because I am female, and my spouse is female, people said 'God was punishing us for being gay' or since I am the well-spouse, told 'she's going to die and leave you all alone. You're too late to get a man and she'll die she'll leave you, and you'll die alone with no one." I am not kidding. This happened because I was somehow flaunting mask wearing and the attack was on...I thought the stage 3 cancer might deflate such attacks. But no. I don't feel safe. It is as if my very presence in a mask triggers and assaults people's security and therefore they do it right back. I am tiny and my heart is breaking. I can't protect my spouse of 10 years from this rare and insidious cancer. I can't protect her from a public that might try and spit on her. And I can't protect myself, and this worries her. People don't see us in masks and think, there must be a medical condition that I should consider. They don't think that at all. If the hospital is encouraging cancer patients (she also has Lupus) and active chemo patients with the 'you don't have to wear that anymore' persuasive, almost like 'I'm freeing you from your chains' tone, they and the oncology staff get offended if you say you are more comfortable with masks. Even while she is getting chemo, the nurse navigator will come in and bring physical therapists, dieticians, social workers and they are always maskless talking and looming directly over her. We are now in an awkward and fearful position of how to tell medical teams that the lack of mask wearing makes both of us uncomfortable. I would love to tell this story. We are outcasts in medical facilities, at the grocery store, minding our own business. She doesn't leave the house anymore. The problem is still rampant at the hospital, but luckily someplace in the world--Memorial Sloan-Kettering--has stuck to their guns about a strict mask policy. They don't want their cancer patients to die--thank God someone out there cares if my wife lives.

Hi I’m an oncology nurse in Australia and find this all very weird. Even before covid we would often encourage our patients to social distance and not to be around people who are sick, to maintain good hand hygiene practices and wear a mask in public especially when the patient is neutropenic. Chemotherapy as I’m sure u know can wipe out your immune system so I am surprised to hear staff being so judgmental. Strangers are going to strange though 😂 try not to take anything ignorant people say.
Omicron strains running around right now are not as deadly as Delta, but there is a LOT of it running around as the end of the cold season is the peak of flue season and it has been a hard winter and a cold spring around here and you can still get pretty sick is you have some co-morbidity going. There are people that have had covid twice and so forth.

My local cancer center is still requiring masks. But in other places people can be so rude!! I keep gently reminding folks that I'm just a cancer patient, like "don't mind me, I don't count, lol." It's been surreal, and I completely felt every word of this OP. My husband and I haven't had covid yet, but we're both vaxxed and careful. I lived in Japan about 20 years ago, and one thing about their culture that I wished Americans would adopt was if someone came to work with a cold, they would wear a mask to limit the spread of germs.

My husband had a heart transplant almost 4 years ago and unfortunately he now needs a kidney transplant because of the medications he has to take for rejection killed his own kidneys. This past Monday we went to his Kidney Transplant team meeting which includes 6 doctors seeing us and not only did every doctor was wearing a mask it was still required in medical building we went to. They didn’t do the temperature check at the door anymore but wearing masks required and social distancing is still in place for now. I have to point out those that were currently wearing masks in public are wearing them for a reason especially if they have a medical major issue. If you see those folks please respect them and give space for them. They are not bothering you and your decision to not wear masks so don’t make it political and leave them be, they have more problems just living in a broken body then you.

I'm 62 and asthmatic, my partner is 82 and has type 2 diabetes and had a stroke in 2011 that has left him visually impaired and physically impaired. I still wear my mask outside and ever go into buildings; I pick up my grocery's curbside. When I'm working in my yard, I wear a mask because people in my Miami neighborhood don't wear a mask. We live near a park where kids run around without masks along with their unmasked parents. My partner and I have been vaccinated with all the shots and have not gotten sick since I was a foster and don't have family and his family are elderly and don't travel. I know things are getting better infection wise down here but I'm also hoping that next year things will be MUCH better. We have not been out and about since early 2020.
I was in the Er recently and all of the doctors and nurses including the security gaurds were wearing masks, the sign is still up telling anyone who enters into this hospital must wear a mask. I don't have a problem with that and I most certainly do not feel isolated for wearing a mask when shopping, I have seen others in my area still wearing masks both young and old.

Wearing a mask is optional. I still wear mine because my daughter has a heart condition due to COVID. This isn't over! The government is just moving on because for them it's business as usual. They don't care if you die or not. So it's my choice and responsibility to protect myself and my family.

People just do not care about others,my Dr during the Pandemic was trying to force me into coming into her office where no one took Covid serious, no mask and she knows my vulnerability ,to have me get my for blood work. I just had a sleep study at a hospital that specifically targets Covid patients. None of the staff or patients were wearing masks, and I’d like to say also that this study is typically done for people who have sleep apnea. I will mention, mine was for narcolepsy. When you think about people who have sleep apnea; you’re typically looking at people who are middle-aged, or overweight or older.

As a person at risk and a disability advocate who would rather not gamble with infection and severe outcomes from COVID, it is very sad realizing no one cares.
This week marks my 3-year "cancerversary" from the day I was told I'm stage 4, meaning chemo for life, baby! I'm still vaxxed and masking per my oncologist's recommendations. Our local cancer clinic still requires masks, but my GP's clinic is mask-optional, which I think it kinda insane, but I get it. Everybody hates the masks. Also, I'm told that there's generally effective treatment if I test positive and immediately report it. But I feel bad for the people who aren't tolerating treatment so well.
Hospitals and clinics should wear masks no matter what . Common sense.. It's a health facility . She's correct . I feel the same as this woman. And I don't have a medical condition. Me and my 15 still wear masks...
What exactly do you think the masks do?
I'm 62 and asthmatic, my partner is 82 and has type 2 diabetes and had a stroke in 2011 that has left him visually impaired and physically impaired. I still wear my mask outside and ever go into buildings; I pick up my grocery's curbside. When I'm working in my yard, I wear a mask because people in my Miami neighborhood don't wear a mask. We live near a park where kids run around without masks along with their unmasked parents. My partner and I have been vaccinated with all the shots and have not gotten sick since I was a foster and don't have family and his family are elderly and don't travel. I know things are getting better infection wise down here but I'm also hoping that next year things will be MUCH better. We have not been out and about since early 2020.
I was in the Er recently and all of the doctors and nurses including the security gaurds were wearing masks, the sign is still up telling anyone who enters into this hospital must wear a mask. I don't have a problem with that and I most certainly do not feel isolated for wearing a mask when shopping, I have seen others in my area still wearing masks both young and old.

You are 100 💯. I'm 55 and I've invested into the SS system and will never be able to retire. My husband is elderly with co morbids and society says I can either protect him or participate in society, not both. Mental health is a real issue here. I no longer give a s h I t about the deniers. People just do not care about others,my Dr during the Pandemic was trying to force me into coming into her office where no one took Covid serious, no mask and she knows my vulnerability ,to have me get my for blood work. All other counties the phlbotimiist were coming to the cars to take yr blood and she said she wasn't going to ask " her staff" to do that...she also threatened me if I did not come in,she wasn't refilling my RX which I have to have daily.This was in WV where the cases were high AF during the Pandemic, and still have cases here,people are still passing away w covid. So' me being who I am not taking no B.S. from ignorant people like her dumped her as my doctor, and found one that did take me serious and my health ,I also reported her,and blasted her behavior to her bosses, and she didn't know I do professional reviews so she got a nice one of those on the WV Dr's Board. The Pandemic has been one of let's see how our society treats others test, well I can tell you we have failed miserably, especially the medical entities!! I still wear a mask, I still do not go into big gatherings, and I still social distance, I do all curb side,and anyone who comes around me has to take a Covid test period! That's my life until they find a legit cure!! It does work what I do 3 and a half years everyone around me but me has caught Covid. Protect yourself it works!!

I still wear my mask, because I have lung issues. I understand health care workers and many others being tired of wearing masks. What irks me the most is people who look at me or say something rude to me because I’m wearing my mask.

Absolutely. It feels like my life isn't worth the effort for people to have the simple curtesy to put on a mask. So wonderful to be expendable. I just had a sleep study at a hospital that specifically targets Covid patients. None of the staff or patients were wearing masks, and I’d like to say also that this study is typically done for people who have sleep apnea. I will mention, mine was for narcolepsy. When you think about people who have sleep apnea; you’re typically looking at people who are middle-aged, or overweight or older.

I have this. Tested negative 2x however I have all the exact symptoms. Started with pain in one eye that woke me up at 3 am. Felt like sand in my eye. Then the tearing and conjunctivitis ... So strange that I test negative.

As for long COVID, I do not currently support it when it comes to using it for public health restrictions. Also; we're looking at 2-3 infections each year at least; Covid damages the immune system (look at the last "time" issue) as well as potentially every organ (wether or not you go to hospital from it); what percentage of the population do you think will be permanently disabled in just a few years, after 20 infections or so? how about dead? People are already always sick from "something".
