I sit all day at the computer working and recently have experienced swelling in my feet at the end of the day. The swelling seems to be only when I work 10 hours or so. What can I do to help eliminate this swelling. I am 63. Thanks.

Compression socks. How I learned to put them on is to first put them inside out. Then, push the toe section to the heel on the right side (that part is no inside he sock). And then hold them at the heel and pull over your foot to your heel. The inside out part will loosely hang down off your foot. Then, grab a five inch section of the hanging fabric and pull that over your foot and heel. And then repeat until you worked the full inside out part correctly over your full length of leg to your knee or higher, depending on the length of your compression sock or stocking. It's really easy this way.

Hi Brad. My brother is a retired Board Certified Vascular Surgeon. He retired after a 45 year career of surgery in the Bronx. I wear support stockings every day because of a circulation issue. His suggestion on getting the stockings on is some baby powder and the most important thing is a pair of Playtex gloves. You can really grip the top of the stockings and pull them right up with ease. I tell a lot of people about this and they begin to wear the stockings again. The zipper on the side according to my brother is not good. I hope this little bit of information helps. All the best to Bob.

There is a tool called the Jobst stocking donner that help you put on compression socks. Also it doesn't have to be Jobst,; it can just be a STOCKING DONNER. It works really well. Your compression stocking will just slide on. Look on google to order or other medical places. Look on TH-cam to see how it works. I love mine. My Doctor prescribed it for me.
    I hope this helps someone.

I have done a lot of physical therapy over the years, and telling the PT "I won't do exercises" never even occurred to me. TBH, when you said a patient told you that, I expected you to show them the door. I know it's common for people to fail to complete the exercises given because, when I complained about how long it took to do all the exercises assigned, the PT was surprised I had tried and admitted they always prescribed 2-3x more than was really necessary in hopes people will do at least half of them.
I work out and walk 3 days a week, and spend a lot of the other days sitting/sewing, and on the rest days the swelling can get bad. I've tried multiple compression socks, but ones that fit my enormous calves are too big in the feet, while ones that fit my feet are way too tight in calves. Good to know that they shouldn't feel as tight as I thought.

I have significant and painful edema that is somewhat controlled when I sleep flat, but cold exposure and sunlight exposure is the key to break down chronic inflammation to amazing levels. Autophagy is the mechanism in play, but stays in play only when nights are kept dark on eyes and skin.

I have Stage 3 Lymphedema, Restless Leg Syndrome and legs sensitive to pressure. I can't stand to wear the short stretch bandages the Lymphedema Clinic uses, I tolerate the adjustable compression garment made from neoprene (wetsuit material) but in the Summer heat they are uncomfortable, TubiGrip has been my go-to since it was first used on me. I have a lymphedema wound that wraps more than halfway around my lower leg and I've found that I get the best results healing using Tubigrip . I have long and short sections, the short ones I can use as an extra layer over the wound or anywhere where the swelling increases to provide more compression. The only thing is you can only wash them 3 times and then they recommend you discard them.
One thing my Lymphedema PT suggested when my legs were really hurting was to get in a pool. It worked like magic, but only as long as I was in the pool. Also, don't get in a pool if you have an open wound. Bacteria can enter and cause all kinds of problems.

    Say hello Bob.
I have lots of compression socks that are all different colours and patterns. When I fractured my ankle and caused severe deep tissue injury from a bad slip and fall, the compression sock helped keep it together until I could get medically treated. I wore the compression sleeve. The intake nurse removed my compression sock and it caused excruciating pain. Good things for the sleeve.

I have fibromyalgia and I am short (5’2.75”) so the compression socks were painful at the top of my calf (especially when folded over) and usually too long. I think the Tubagrip might help. I am also under evaluation for lupus now. This gives me a back up for when the exercises aren’t enough (or I’m driving long distances and have a big problem with it). I’ve found for me it’s worse when I don’t put electrolytes in my water when I hydrate under these circumstances. Thank you. I will check out the exercises for this as well.

You guys are a treasure. I'm currently trying to stay consistent with the tubigrip for compression to heal a wound (diabetec gardener=bad combo!) and I also have swollen ankles from RA and heart disease. No one explained these tips, tricks, and the reasons for everything. Roll-down caused the turniquet effect for me so I started to avoid using them. Because of Bob and Brad, my personal PTs(j/k!) I am improving my self-care. I went on Amazon and there are three sizes - E(large) then F (large) and G(no size or measurement mentioned - very confusing). I'm thinking the "no-size" is what my doctor puts on, because the E and F are "large." I have skinny legs so I'm hoping it's the right size. Yes, we are all busy, even boomers. Somehow you keep turning out this content, without fail, alleviating a lot of suffering for so many people. Thank you.

I want to send Bob prayers and positive energy and sympathize with what he's having to deal with. It feels like your body has betrayed you. All I can say is that in this day and age medicine is advancing faster than ever with new treatments and technologies coming every year that are lifechanging. From one tall Bob to another, I've dealt with health issues from the day I was born to today, 70 years later. You just learn to live with it. There will be times it brings you down and I truly believe that God gave us family and friends to help share our burdens during those times so don't try to tough it out all alone. I highly recommend a book my doctor recommended to me years ago when I was going through a bad time. Norman Cousins 'Anatomy of an Illness as Perceived by the Patient'.

I have lymphoedema in both of my legs below the knee. I was fitted for some compression socks at a pharmacy. The measurements are sent to a German company, and therefore custom made for my legs. Put your feet up once a day above heart level for 20 mins. In time almost all swelling is cut down to a little. Promise a sponsor, stick to your plan. More days holding up, less days swelling. Great Knees. 🙏✌️♥️✝️👐🕊️🌹😇 I lay flat almost touching a wall, then raise my feet straight up the wall as comfortable as I can get them. Then after 5 mins with knees bent like a sitting position though not sitting. Then at 15 mins legs raised, lower right leg to the right for count of thirty, leg is outstretched to side, then coss leg over body, take right arm and stretch for toes county of thirty, repeat on left side, then 20 mins is up. Great for sciatica and lower back.

The easier method for putting on compression socks: put your hand inside the sock, to the toes, turn the sock inside out to the heel. Then put the sock on the foot, adjust as needed to straighten out sock, then from the gather the remainder to the sock in both hands and pull the sock up the leg and adjust as needed to make sure the compression is evenly spread out. This works for knee high and thigh high socks. That's how I was trained to do it, long ago, in nursing school.
