I am an artist residing in beautiful washington state! My paintings are heavily inspired by nature and its beauty. I work primarily in oil paint, and sometimes watercolor. I prefer to work in a mostly realistic style and occasionally experiment outside of that. I post oil painting time lapses, painting lessons and tutorials, drawings, art tips, and occasionally artist vlogs where I share bits of my life as an artist. Creating art is my greatest passion and I'm thankful for the chance to share it with you. ♥

I really relate to your description of the struggle to balance realism and painterly freedom. Sometimes it’s less about the product and more about enjoying the process!!

this painting is a masterpiece. Just stunning! I love almost all of your paintings, but this one is my favorite so far. =)
A note on your struggle with the violet underpainting... I recognised problems with starting portraits on a very purple background in some of my older works. I think it's because when you try to mix your skintones as usual and put them on top of the purple, they appear way more yellowish. Probably because it's a complementary contrast. =D Of course the skintone you've created here looks very natural. Not at all too yellow or in anyway off. =)
Hope to see more portraits with abstract backgrounds like this in the future. You can trust that side of your inner artist. =D

This is such a beautiful painting! I love the different hues of purple you used! I thought I was the only one painting with a baby monitor in my studio nowadays. It is definitely adventure balancing artist and mommy life. ❤

I definitely understand two artists warring within. I'm trying to do an imposto piece, but every so often I freak, get my brushes out, smooth everything best I can, and make it realistic again. Only to get frustrated for not being brave, and trying again and going back and forth so many times to the point now that even if I were to try and smooth it out there's so much texture I'd have to sand it down. Lol. So at least that's forcing me to continue. It's very much a trust the process piece and it's really intimidating to try something so different.
You really inspire me and I love all your work so much. I love road trips so your paintings of streets are a definite highlight. I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your beautiful creations, helpful lessons, and your thoughts about your process for all these years. ♡

I love this looser look. Painting outside your comfort zone is always a bit uncomfortable but as long as you don't let the obstacles defeat you and you don't give up too soon, you can be rewarded with a wonderful and inspiring result. Bravo!

First time watching one of your videos. A fascinating collaboration of two artistic spirits. This definitely seemed uncomfortable for you, but at first glance, this seemed a VERY valuable exercise. The artist that values accuracy and realism is going to be pushed out of a comfort zone by this painting, and the original, expressive artistic vision in you doesn't have the same depth and variety of tools. YET. Again, this is only my impression, but as the free innovator pushes her accurate counterpart into new problems, that painter is going to become more adept at finding solutions to get that vision on canvas with accuracy. A synthesis of the two, giving you a wider selection of options that you feel comfortable with. Freedom to put your ideas on canvas in the way YOU see fit. Just my impression.

That was an ornamental cherry tree btw, incase you didn't know. I'm in Vancouver B.C. Canada and we have them all over here. Very common on the west coast. We have the cherry blossom festival in spring when they are all in bloom.
The painting turned out beautifully, I actually really love the tone the purple underpainting gave to the whole composition.

Hi Lena I was watching one of your sketchbook Sunday's and was wondering if you were bringing that back anytime soon. I really enjoy watching your art videos.
I think a lot of artists can relate to what you said about loving details but having a part of yourself trapped and wanting to explore and be free. Ahhh the purple tree...or was it violet?
I think the yellow bit on the upper right corner was the perfect addition to contrast the general purple tone of the piece. It improved it so much ^^
Love this piece, the woman and the flowers are stunning.
Maybe you could experiment with painting some of abstractions before painting the main subject. I saw that approach with Eva Gamayun here on TH-cam and I think you may like it :)
I can so relate … when you proceed past a stage of the painting that you really liked … then fear that it’s ruined and wanting to go back … but proceeding on to something else good and unexpected and probably unachievable unless you took the risk!!!
