Agree. My dad and I were best buddies. Being beside his bed at our home with my brothers and mom was hard but humbling. We are all humans and we had to tell him goodbye.
This kid was my neighbor. He, his mom and his sister came to our house and sang to us on our front porch. He came over and he and I sang together while he played that guitar. I remember when his dad passed. It was so sad. I am so happy for him.
I missss him sooo damnnn much and iam the oldest in the family, have to be strong to keep everyone together but when im alone, i scream…like im trying to scream the pain away from my soul…
That was awesome and hurt at the same time. That lil dude just made this grown man cry. I don’t have a dad but I lost my youngest brother in 2010. Death of your best friend who is also blood really sucks man. This kid has a long road ahead but he made it I know his pops is proud!!! Rip to his pops and RIP my lil brother!!!
That is definitely a deep line that I think can be overlooked but has so much meaning to it especially the way this man delivers it with the passion and literally singing from his heart and soul
I’m 40yrs old, stuck on a crowded subway during rush hour in Japan with tears on my face… and I cannot care less. What a beautiful and emotional song😢❤
My dad attended the funeral for Iam's dad. Music flows strong through the blood of the Tongi family. Never met you cousin, but I love you and wish you luck!!
I lost my father thirty three years ago when I was 19. He didn’t get to see me graduate university, get a full time job, get married and become a father to two wonderful boys. Iam had me sobbing within moments of hearing those lyrics. Iam, may you always be blessed.
Some music comes from the mouth.. some music comes from the mind... some music comes from the heart... This man's music comes from the very center of his soul. He didn't just sing a song to audition.... he gave us the privilege to enter his life and see his character, his love to see his father and his hope to secure his future. He didn't just share his music... he gave us a priceless gift. Iam Tongi, thank you.
Dude. This man single handedly made American Idol relevant again. I know I personally didn't even know it was still around until Iam's audition vent viral instantly. Mahalo and congrats to this young man.
Bro same I used to watch American idol but it's been over like 5 years since I've watched it but I came up on his video and he made it relevant for me again
Me too! I tuned out years ago but someone told me to watch this & it's just undone me! Can't stop crying. His voice is incredible & he's so young & humble. Wishing him all the best! ❤🎉
My father passed away couple of months ago in Mexico. Before he was buried, I adapted the song to a short poem in a Spanish version. I said this in front of everyone. I barely made it, and goes like this: " Hoy, hoy no soy tu hijo Hoy tu no eres mi padre, Hoy somos dos viejos amigos que se dicen adiós, No hay necesidad del perdón, No hay necesidad del olvido, Por que yo conozco tus errores, Y tu los míos, Y mientras duermes, Prometo hacerte orgulloso de mí, No hay nada que temer, Que hoy viviré la vida, tal y como es "
Man how can you not cry. This guy connected on so many levels. No crazy runs or showing off his voice. Just pure emotion, cant even imagine being in that room
I didn't cry, after losing so many people I have learned to appreciate stuff more. I dont cry because its over, I laugh because it happened. Just remember how lucky we are to have the people we have, enjoy it while it lasts.
30,000 locals are moving from Hawaii each year. My 3 grand children moved to Vegas for a better life for them and their children. Local people that don't already have a house in Hawaii, can't afford to buy one now that starts at over half a million dollars on a zero lot(which means 10 feet between you and your neighbor with very little front and back yard. YES, priced out of paradise.
About to be priced out. Lucky enough to be living with family, but that can only last for so long. PSA don’t move to Hawai’i and if you visit pick up your trash and tip well 🙏
26 year old dude here. Lost my dad to terminal cancer when I was 19. Everything about Iam's demeanor and performance reminds me of myself shorty after my dad left and I couldn't stop crying after watching this. Wish I could give him a hug and just talk to him about it all. Love and Gratitude will always win. shoutout to all the amazing fathers out there.
I totally agree I cried felt him losing my father as well Iam Tongi did that this was my first time hearing this song and it was the perfect song for you you got this LETS GOO
As an older musician of 35 years myself, I rarely give anyone a chance these days. Iam, something about you made me pause for a moment and lend my attention to you. When you began telling your story, I listened even closer...and then you began singing this song. In my 51 years there have been maybe 4 artists to bring me to tears and only one who brought tears that I could not stop. That was you!! Regardless of the results of this competition, I have no doubt you will go far with your talent. Your rendition of this song is so very special and I will pray that God brings you success. You deliver a love that is so rare in music these days. My heart broke during this performance but I immediately became a fan. This song, whether yours or not, was written for you to sing at this special moment in your journey. I truly wish you all the best in your career and life. As a Veteran, I salute you and as a father I send you my respect. Your father would absolutely be proud and is definitely shining on you. Bravo good sir. God Bless.
I've just stumbled upon this tearjerker.... I'm a Mum is the only difference. 25 years tomorrow my son committed suicide. 25 years tonight was the last time I saw him alive. Thanks Iam for a beautiful rendition. I saw James Blunt live in Newcastle City Hall years ago. I was up in the balcony and I don't know if he sensed I am a Lightworker but he couldn't stop staring up in my direction. Happy memories but empty arms is all you're left with. God bless you Philip, sleep tight, I'll make you proud, also Rodney Iam's dad.... I'm sure you're proud. He's a star. xx.
Condolences on your loss. The hurt of loss never really goes away... it might fade into the background sometimes if you face it and address it though... and I appreciate that you're still facing it head-on, for him (because nobody wants to be forgotten), but more for you (because nobody should have to live through that).
@@JVLuther He was around me yesterday as I drank coffee in a pub. 3 music tracks came on one after the other. Woman by John Lennon (we both love The Beatles music but the words are appropriate). Party like it's 1999 - the year he died. Followed by Robbie Williams Angels. I sensed his presence. Then went to church and a medium gave me a message from him. Amazing proof his energy is still around helping me through life. I'm 73... not be long before we meet again. God willing. xxx Thanks for your lovely comment. xxx
"People thought I cry because I miss him, but its because I hear him singing" what a beautiful statement shows his connection and spirit to the world. Makes you stop and think.
I instantly started sobbing uncontrollably as soon as he started singing. My husband who lost his father a year ago was standing in front of the tv in tears he couldn’t even sit down. The only sound that filled our living room was this man’s beautiful voice and our sniffles. Truly captivated us and the room we were in through the tv. That’s insanely powerful. The gift you have is indescribable.
Easy for me to envision this moment. He really did fracture souls with this audition. Best to you both as you try to navigate this season. I mean that. 💛🌈
I’ve never seen a more genuine reaction on this show than Lionel‘s reaction to this song. You can tell he immediately thought of his father. Powerful stuff.
You can see when it started too. Around 3:00 once that line drops, Lionel's left hand started shaking and he was like, "oohh" like he recognizes something is happening to his body and soul and it was because of this young man's song.
Lionel's reaction was definitely one the highlights of this video. Watching him struggle to keep his composure because of this performance was really something else.
Look at us, everyone in the comments, appreciating this talented voice.... Many of us from different backgrounds, nationalities, countries, but yet here we are feeling the same feelings im sure. How beautiful us humans are and how we can come together...
we need more experiences like this more than ever. You're 100% correct. I'm positive people at odds due to beliefs today would come together and empathize with each other. This performance is probably top 3 I've ever seen. I can't think of another time I was this impacted by a song. Beatiful
Iam Tongi - If you ever get a chance to read this comment, I want to say thank you. For introducing me to probably the most powerful song I have ever heard. My father and I rarely see eye to eye, yet after hearing your performance, I have a new found love and respect for him. I take him for granted when he's always had my back even though we had many disagreements. Thanks to you and James Blunt for this a million times! Now I realize that my dad isn't "bitching" at me. He just wants the best for me. It took me too long to realize, but now I can only hope to be half the father he is to me. I'm going to thank my father everyday now. Cheers and I'm rooting for you, Iam Tongi! Your father, Rodney Tongi, would be so proud!
Man…. Right in the chest because I had the same realization and want the same, you literally couldn’t have said it better. Word for word, thank you for this comment
@j0epark1 and I thank you for reminding me what to do with my parent. You are absolutely right, we take our parents for granted and never appreciate them enough. I have to change that. Thank you to Iam Tongi too for the great reminder to us all
@@angeloaristondo2475 Thank you as well for taking it to heart! I genuinely felt a huge change in me after listening to the words in this song. I’m disappointed it took me this long to look at things through his lens, because I am not a father just yet, but I’m so glad I found this song to really think about things. My dad is going to get a better and better version of me from now on! Cheers to you and hope you do well too!
My dad passed on in October 2023. Because of this video, he wanted it to be played at his funeral. A friend of mine performed it and knocked it out the park. Thank you Iam, I will have this memory and video, forever
@adamw7340 decent or not, anyone can be a monster....what you let go of is blaming yourself for it, making yourself accountable for a monster who didn't ever blame himself. Make yourself better than him and then see what happens...still havent achieved the last bit..Will lyk how it goes
I felt this to my core. I just lost my dad less than a month ago. Today we are going to celebrate his life and the man he was. Iam, keep singing. I'm so sorry for your loss. Hugs to you, my beautiful friend.
No runs and riffs, no belting. Just pure singing voice that captures the essence of the song and resonates with everyone's soul. You know it's a true musician when they are not even trying to impress the audience but just singing their hearts out. He's an authentic artist born in the language of music and I hope he could make it and create his own music because it's rare to find an artist nowadays that doesn't rely on techniques. This guy is a natural gem in music industry. Rooting for you big guy.👏
I am a 45 year old woman, sitting at my dining table in a little village in northern England... crying into my porridge. Every person who has lost their parent, anywhere in the world, will feel this song in their soul. The delivery was mastery.
Growing up my dad died when I was only five and can’t remember him but a lot of people said he was a very kind loving policeman in town. Known by the whole town. I can still remember his picture with him in his uniform .This really makes me cry even I’m now 70 yrs.old
When he looked off to the side at the verge of tears at 3:34 I broke down. It was almost as if his dad was standing right next to him. So proud of you Toko, we’re rooting for you💙💙
Honestly one of the best and most heartfelt performances Idol has probably seen. The emotional connection he makes with his delivery makes me hope he wins this season.
The Samoan and Tongan people can sing like no others. Our church on Sunday had a second service held by Tongan people. Only about 25 people, but it sounded like 100. The harmony, just beautiful. Yes, I've lived in Hawaii since 1963, when he said Kahuku, I knew we were in for a treat. I'm still in tears.
It's an overlooked culture in America which is a shame. They bring so much talent and should be showcased more. I think you're starting to see that more lately, though. So that's good.
@@Bronco_Billy_Jack_Hills stolen land. It shouldn’t really be considered part of America. Especially since the people that created that culture and grew up there are being kicked out by billionaires, soon it’ll just be a bunch of islands owned by CEO’s
As someone raised in Hawaii, I can tell y’all… Polynesians are blessed with the most beautiful voices ever, they’re just such musically talented folks and it makes me happy anytime any Pacific Islander gets recognition, especially for music! So heartfelt 😭
I’m aboriginal living in Australia obviously.. I went to high school where 80% of students were Sa and let me tell you.. there was not a lunch break where I wasn’t listening to beautiful music and creative music too. For me that’s a real blessing
Not one single person in the history of American Idol thus far besides Iam Tongi has unified the world into crying ALL at the same time..This will never be repeated. He has a soul that speaks to every single person on this planet. Truly...Truly amazing. He is the next American Idol !!!!!
I am so glad this young man won America idol, he had us in tears last night as he sang monsters. Love Iam’s voice he is going to go far. Congratulations Iam 🎉
@@MLGB0Yz A. So all of your knowledge got into your head without any teachers? No one taught you how to read and write? B. Why would you think that an English teacher shouldn't make a comment about storytelling? C. It is quite common for ignorant, uneducated people to try and put down people who are educated. Like here, they only succeed in exposing their insecurities, their lack of self-confidence, and their low self-esteem. I feel sorry for you.
I'm 74. I lost my Dad nine years ago. I was 12,000 miles away and within 24 hours of learning he was dying I got on a plane heading home. He passed while I was in the air and to this day I regret not getting to say goodbye. This young man expressed in just a couple of minutes how anyone who has lost a parent feels. The roles change, father to son, mother to daughter, but the love lives on, and the memories are forever.
James Blunt get's a lot of undeserved hate in the UK- simply because he's posh- but he has written some masterpieces- and whenever you hear him interviewed he just takes all the negativity from the 'left wing social class warriors' we have over here and makes a joke at his own expense. He truly is a class act.
“Priced out of paradise” my respect grew further for this young man and how he represents us Hawaiians/polys !!. Way to show the world your voice/talent and the message about how our people are being priced out of our lands over the generations 🥲. Braddah deserves everything good comming to him, and I hope he makes it BIG so that he can return to his RIGHTFUL home: HAWAII NEI 🏝💯 dad must be smiling so proud up there
From one Pacific Islander to another, very happy to see another one of us going towards success. This song choice was perfect. I used to go to Lai'e for church stuff all the time growing up, the talent that comes from the North Shore is crazy. Congratulations, Iam! All of O'ahu and Hawaii is rooting for you.
@Rap_savy if you like that lyric you gonna love that song. Discovered it the day I drove to the hospital when I had to sign papers to take my pops off life support. Such a great song imo
Appreciate the judges for letting him go through it without cutting it short or interrupting. Really touching and sad, and feel blessed to have heard him sing it
I’m 35, my father was on his death bed when I watch this on tv. And I balled my eyes out. A couple weeks later he passed away. This song and rendition brings me to my knees. I love you dad. It’s my turn to chase the monsters away.
I'm sorry for your pain, Brother. My Dad died in 2001. I miss him with all of my heart and this song tears me to pieces, but I promise you it gets better. I love you, bro. Hang in there.
I’ve seen this multiple times and it cuts right through me every time. The love and respect a son has for his father is something only they understand.
A lot of sons don't have respect for their fathers because their fathers are absent. Lots of black people don't have fathers. Their mothers had sperms donors. The women slept with men without protection and without any moral compass. The men came and went like they would do at the red light district.
I’ve watched this ten times and cried every time. I lost my dad to leukemia in 2007. He passed with his wife and his five sons all by his bedside. I was holding his right hand as he left this world. This performance really hit home. ❤
Somehow I ended up here after seeing my dad in the hospital today. He won’t be with us long. I’m so grateful for this beautiful performance. And these beautiful people who made this happen. I haven’t had a good cry in years, so thank you for that. Thank you.
"While you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud, so Daddy won't you just close your eyes..." This line hits me more than the others. We weren't just watching an Idol audition, we were watching a son sing to his father😢
The fact that this is the most viewed video on the American platform ever tells you just how much his audition and how his spirit has connected with so many people. Love Iam, doing great things to share the culture, the spirit, and the power of music. Just Amazing!
Never had a song or singer make me cry beside Morgan wallen “thought you should know” to his mom as I love my mom so much. after I watched this a long time ago I got tear eyes. as I grew older feel more emotions with life just felt more in general this made me actually cry. Not sure what it is but it’s amazing. It’s therapeutic in a way never knew my dad but it showed we’re not alone going through struggles and loss. It’s beautiful and good to get a cry out. I may have a kid in the way soon turning 23 I rly hope not but if I did I would want him to love me as much as this kid did with his. Thank you
How he kept his composure for this is beyond me. My Dad passed 5 years ago and I can't even listen to this without losing it, let alone trying to sing it.
I can't imagine being an 18-year-old guy who just lost his father 2 months prior, and having the courage to sing about it while the world is watching. Bravo, young man, bravo!
Amen. I am so grateful I had my dad till I was 35. But it still hurts and seeing this young man sing his feels is healing in so many ways. God bless you, young man.
My dad passed away 10 years ago. Hearing him, I was again that 17 years old teenager having to go into the world without his guidance. I haven't cried that much since 10 years before today. It was a magnificent delivery.
I don't know what I'll do when my dad passes. We are connected at the hip. He has been there through thick and thin. We supported each other when mom passed. I think losing mom brought us even closer together. Love you dad.❤️
My dad passed away 7 yrs ago, i was 20 at that time. This song and iam delivering it hit deep, especially the part "I know your mistakes and you know mine". Me and my dad had a bit of falling out and made up near the end.
My dad passed away 10 years ago as well and I miss him everyday. Totally felt the heartbreak this young man was feeling…before, during and after he sang this beautiful song. Praying he goes far in his American Idol journey…and beyond; one never knows what doors may open up for him ❤
Same feelings, I lost my grandmother who raised me 3 days old when I was born, Saturday November 17, 2019 she's waiting for me to come home, Sunday (November 18, 2019) she asked my Aunt what's the stautus of my travel, and November 19, she passess away waiting for me to come home. This is the biggest burden in my heart up to this day, I'm on the feelings to have just one day to hug her, to tell her how thankful I am she raised me. My grandmother is my number 1 fan. I miss her so much. THIS SONG BREAKS MY WHOLE ME My grandma once told me to see her greatgrand child with me, it's a long story to tell.
Wow. My mother sent me this and said prepare yourself. I’m sitting here with tears rolling down my face. Nothing could prepare you for this unbelievable rendition of this song. When he gets to the chorus, electricity shot through my soul and that was the end of any composure. This boy can SING, and he can sing deep into areas of your soul you didn’t think were possible. Dream big and smile brightly, Iam! You brother, are going to go far. Your dad is watching over you proudly. Thank you for sharing this with the world. A beautiful, beautiful soul. A big hug from me to you.
I was THROUGH!! 😭🤔 with the auditions once I heard THIS YOUNG MAN sing. The relationship between my daughter and I is nowhere NEAR !! 😭🙏 what I would like it to be so I'M STILL CRYING & no one in the world could have chosen a better song to honor his farther /mother. God bless us all. 💜
im sitting in the library surrounded by students and balling my eyes out. this audition was incredible, watched it 10 times in a loop and cried every... single .... time. Americans better vote for him, he needs to win!
That’s a golden buzzer performance. Not because of the sob story; It’s not even a sob story. He lost his father and that happens to everyone, but Lionel hit it right on the spot: “The story is one thing. You’re delivery of your story was phenomenal.” That’s it. That’s what it is. I’m no professional music critic, but absolutely perfect, in my opinion.
Right. We hear 'sob stories' all the time on shows like this. This was recent and on another level, especially when you look at his other TH-cam videos. His dad is right next to him.
I absolutely agree lol do they have something like that for idle where they get put right through to the competition because I know on America’s got talent is the golden buzzer
You don’t need to call someone personal story a “sob story” it’s just how their life goes. You need to let things process sometimes before you speak or type bruh.
This season was over once Iam auditioned. It's not his backstory than won us over - it's his masterful storytelling. You feel every emotion with every note. His soulful, expressive voice didn't need much accompaniment. Very few artists have had this effect on me, and it looks like many others feel the same way. He's had the most views and likes across all social media platforms, more than all the other contestants combined. Congrats, Iam and I wish you a long, successful career and life!
Even better is that he didn’t have to resort to vocal gymnastics, like singing multiple octave arpeggios, to get votes. He just had to leverage his storytelling, which he did. And he was rewarded for it.
Keep ur head up brother. I lost mine in 2011 when I was 9. The pain never goes away. If anything it gets stronger and stronger and you want to see him that much more. Please keep your head up my brother.
“I'm not your son, you're not my father We're just two grown men saying goodbye. No need to forgive, no need to forget I know your mistakes and you know mine...” ~ I don't know how many times I've watched this audition ❤️
The amount of times I’ve watched this I never realized that. I’m from hawaii and this will always stick with me because so many of us even at his age and younger have lost a parent so I know it hits all of us back home
I'm a grown man and this brought me to tears. What a legacy you've created in your dad's name. To think that we all know the name Rodney because of the talent he nurtured in you.
You should watch the original music video, James wrote the song for his father when he was dying of stage 4 kidney disease and filmed the video in one take because it was too emotional to do again
@@sarahealey1780 And he did the video in one take! he refused to use auto-tune as he wanted it to be raw and true to life. He wanted to convey the deep emotion in his voice that he is losing his father. and, boy, he pulls it off! chefs kiss.
Notice how he didn't or wasn't gonna bring it up. She did. His expression and mannerisms tell the truth. He is a true islander with a heart, soul and voice of gold.
Of course theres always one. The comment was on how genuine he was/is. IDOL has been on for ages and stories sell. Yet you chose to focus on my so called ignorance when in fact you don't know how to spell. But I'll let that slide, as no matter the outcome he will be signed lol.
@@TheFreeBro but what story exactly? There is no secret that ALL of reality shows are scripted, but not to the point of lying in your face. Was this dude scouted? Maybe. Is his story 100% true and it happend? For sure. You can look up his videos with his father, hell you can even look up him singing this song 2 years ago. Just because it was edited the way it was doesnt mean its whole scheme or whatever.
This is what music is supposed to be. Genuine, pure, and from the heart. I hope he gets the recognition he deserves and succeeds in this industry. Fantastic performance.
I dont know how many times I watched this ever since it was posted, and every time, it makes me cry like a baby! I'm 32 now. I lost my dad when I was 13. And damn it, Iam, you really shatter the souls of every grown man who lost his father. You sang this on behalf of us all. This was a masterpiece.
Just an added note about Lionel Richie. I liked his music in the 80's but did not know anything about his personality. Watching the way he spoke to the performer before the presentation and the way he reacted to the performance, he showed me his deep connection to humanity and the world of emotions. Richie is the real deal and as such has been elevated in my book of performers with a soul.
“I’m not your son, you’re not my father, we’re just two grown men saying goodbye “- just hits me hard…
Yeah I agree, that was a tough one.
Agree. My dad and I were best buddies. Being beside his bed at our home with my brothers and mom was hard but humbling. We are all humans and we had to tell him goodbye.
He reminds me of Iz. His voice soothes and moves me at the same time.
i was thinking to myself “this song not too bad” then when he said that line gahhhhdam it hit me 😭😭
Man my dad just past a few days ago from cancer and this song hit me to deep

Singing a song like this only happens once. The nerves and emotions turn it into something that can't be captured in the studio later.

I felt the sameway, he's going to Hollywood, and I hope he makes it deep in the finals. It got me.
Beautiful comment that has put the crazy string and graph of music into readable words and for that I thank u.

My father passed away couple of months ago in Mexico. Before he was buried, I adapted the song to a short poem in a Spanish version. I said this in front of everyone. I barely made it, and goes like this:
"
Hoy, hoy no soy tu hijo
Hoy tu no eres mi padre,
"
This is beautiful wow
Man how can you not cry. This guy connected on so many levels. No crazy runs or showing off his voice. Just pure emotion, cant even imagine being in that room

And notice. The only (modern) woman on the panel did not shed a tear.

I didn't cry, after losing so many people I have learned to appreciate stuff more. I dont cry because its over, I laugh because it happened. Just remember how lucky we are to have the people we have, enjoy it while it lasts.

“Priced outta paradise.” Gosh, that’s sad. God bless this man and his family! What a beautiful, touching voice he has.
Sadly it’s true. Hawaii is like USA’s moneymaker out of greed.. Everything is up for the rich.
That's a song in itself and if the young man sees this?
He should pen
"Priced outa Paradise"
30,000 locals are moving from Hawaii each year. My 3 grand children moved to Vegas for a better life for them and their children. Local people that don't already have a house in Hawaii, can't afford to buy one now that starts at over half a million dollars on a zero lot(which means 10 feet between you and your neighbor with very little front and back yard. YES, priced out of paradise.
We are all getting priced out. I’m born and raised in Honolulu but my husband and I had to relocate to Arizona where we could actually afford to live
About to be priced out. Lucky enough to be living with family, but that can only last for so long. PSA don’t move to Hawai’i and if you visit pick up your trash and tip well 🙏

The fact he could keep himself together and sing this, is showing how strong he is, I’m sure his dad is super proud!
I think it also shows his love for music and the importance of conveying the message through song in a beautiful way.

I’ve never seen a more genuine reaction on this show than Lionel‘s reaction to this song. You can tell he immediately thought of his father. Powerful stuff.
So emotional 💔
You can see when it started too. Around 3:00 once that line drops, Lionel's left hand started shaking and he was like, "oohh" like he recognizes something is happening to his body and soul and it was because of this young man's song.
That’s my reaction when I eat chick fil a for the first time after a few months.

I may have a kid in the way soon turning 23 I rly hope not but if I did I would want him to love me as much as this kid did with his. Thank you
How he kept his composure for this is beyond me. My Dad passed 5 years ago and I can't even listen to this without losing it, let alone trying to sing it.
I’m in the same boat, I can’t even say the words without losing it.
I tried singing along and broke into tears . I still have my father…
My dad passed away 5 years ago on April 2nd. I'm so sorry for your loss. Sending you love, peace, and healing to your whole family.
They kept going. Jeez just let the guy sing before you make him cry 😂
@@KyleJustRuns I feel this comment. This video made me miss my dad and he's still with me
I can't imagine being an 18-year-old guy who just lost his father 2 months prior, and having the courage to sing about it while the world is watching. Bravo, young man, bravo!
the best music comes from pain...sad but true
Amen. I am so grateful I had my dad till I was 35. But it still hurts and seeing this young man sing his feels is healing in so many ways. God bless you, young man.
whenever i’m feeling stressed and need to get some tears out i come back to this video. gets me every single time
I love how Katie asked Iam his father's name. That was very sensitive and thoughtful of her to let him recognize his father.
👍👍👍👍👍
It’s scripted lol
@Robert Underwood yeah so scripted "next guy his dad's dead just ask his dad's name okay Katie?"
@@okaton6559 don’t forget the cry on command
The effect he had on ALL of us is something that only happens once in a lifetime !
Most definitely
Amen.. He is the winner now of American idol 2023..
I wouldn’t say that, but I definitely balled my eyeballs out listening to & watching this…
My dad passed away 10 years ago. Hearing him, I was again that 17 years old teenager having to go into the world without his guidance. I haven't cried that much since 10 years before today. It was a magnificent delivery.
youre not alone. my dad passed away when i was 17 too. it happened 9 years ago... we made it through a rough patch
THIS SONG BREAKS MY WHOLE ME
My grandma once told me to see her greatgrand child with me, it's a long story to tell.
My father is still healthy and alive but for a moment I thought I lost him listening to this song,James Blunt create a masterpiece....
💯💯💯💯
I was THROUGH!! 😭🤔 with the auditions once I heard THIS YOUNG MAN sing. The relationship between my daughter and I is nowhere NEAR !! 😭🙏 what I would like it to be so I'M STILL CRYING & no one in the world could have chosen a better song to honor his farther /mother. God bless us all. 💜
@@edvasmith8556 Blessings to you. Praying for healings.
Powerful beautiful talent from this young man I can relate closely with him my wife and I cried it was like a soul cleansing experience thank you tong
Well said Josh x x xx
im sitting in the library surrounded by students and balling my eyes out. this audition was incredible, watched it 10 times in a loop and cried every... single .... time. Americans better vote for him, he needs to win!
That’s a golden buzzer performance.
Not because of the sob story; It’s not even a sob story. He lost his father and that happens to everyone, but Lionel hit it right on the spot: “The story is one thing. You’re delivery of your story was phenomenal.”
That’s it. That’s what it is. I’m no professional music critic, but absolutely perfect, in my opinion.
Right. We hear 'sob stories' all the time on shows like this. This was recent and on another level, especially when you look at his other TH-cam videos. His dad is right next to him.
All those emotions and tears and no golden buzzer!? His song touches us!
I absolutely agree lol do they have something like that for idle where they get put right through to the competition because I know on America’s got talent is the golden buzzer
@@tommyortiz6623 that's because the golden buzzer is on a different show lmao.
❤️❤️❤️
Yup I always knew he would win. I knew this song but somehow until he sang it I didn’t lose it .
Exactly!
Even better is that he didn’t have to resort to vocal gymnastics, like singing multiple octave arpeggios, to get votes. He just had to leverage his storytelling, which he did. And he was rewarded for it.
Iam has a God ❤given gift.
I lost my father in 1997, when I was 7 years old. Randomly found this, and it has hit me like a freight train, I can't stop listening...
Big hug brother. "When you love so deeply, you feel so deeply" ♥
Please listen to once I was 7 years old I'm not trying to kick you in the gut but that's a good song to brother
same
Keep ur head up brother. I lost mine in 2011 when I was 9. The pain never goes away. If anything it gets stronger and stronger and you want to see him that much more. Please keep your head up my brother.
Lost my dad in 1999 when I was 8. This got me in the feels hard.
“I'm not your son, you're not my father
We're just two grown men saying goodbye.
No need to forgive, no need to forget
I know your mistakes and you know mine...” ~ I don't know how many times I've watched this audition ❤️
I'm also lost count of how many times I've been watching this vids on and on,day and night 🌙 with tears rolling down in my cheeks 💔😭
@@joshtovo7636 Me too man OMG😭😭😭
Ditto
Same
So glad everyone relates to those specific line he sang, shit hits too hard.
MY GOD! That young man sings and just pierces the heart of every guy out there who’s ever loved their dad! Incredible!
“ Now it’s my turn to chase the monsters away. “
That tore me apart. Congratulations Iam Tongi. We’re all proud of you 😭💞
Thanks so much I appreciate It
Omg he sings it with his heart and soul beautiful
Yeah that line hits the hardest.
i missed my unknown Father through this song❤
The way he looks over his shoulder to feel his dad’s presence at 3:35 when he sings “I can feel my hand on your arm” 😭
Wow. Good catch. I got chills replaying that and I believe he was there by his side like always
I've watched that same apart about 100x glad I'm not the only person who noticed such a sad but beautiful moment 🙏❤️ God bless this kid .
And the judges noticed it and felt it too
The amount of times I’ve watched this I never realized that. I’m from hawaii and this will always stick with me because so many of us even at his age and younger have lost a parent so I know it hits all of us back home
With tears in his eyes too😢 I feel like his dad was right there with him❤
I'm a grown man and this brought me to tears. What a legacy you've created in your dad's name. To think that we all know the name Rodney because of the talent he nurtured in you.
well said brother
I couldn't have said it better myself
Cheers everyone. Hope you're all there for your brothers and family. It's the legacy you leave behind that matters.
📢 RODNEY.!!!!!!!!
This hits me hard since losing my Dad less than 3 weeks ago, I'd give everything to hear his voice 1 more time. I'm in tears hearing this song
He is a million times better than any over-produced, auto tune glitzy performance. He is so pure! I could listen to him all day! ❤
You should watch the original music video, James wrote the song for his father when he was dying of stage 4 kidney disease and filmed the video in one take because it was too emotional to do again
lolll
I’d rather hear something like this than most over produced stuff out there
@@Miss_Distress who are your top 3 artist?
@@sarahealey1780 And he did the video in one take! he refused to use auto-tune as he wanted it to be raw and true to life. He wanted to convey the deep emotion in his voice that he is losing his father. and, boy, he pulls it off! chefs kiss.
Notice how he didn't or wasn't gonna bring it up. She did. His expression and mannerisms tell the truth. He is a true islander with a heart, soul and voice of gold.
If you don’t think this story was planned from the producers from the start then you’re being ignorant. I hate modern signing shows because of this
Of course theres always one.
@@TheFreeBro wow! I can feel that cold chill from here mr. Empathy. You can't be a Freebro when your takeaway is negativity. You must be a Democrat
Uhmm he was going to bring it up one way or the other. Since the song is dedicated to his father.
This is what music is supposed to be. Genuine, pure, and from the heart. I hope he gets the recognition he deserves and succeeds in this industry. Fantastic performance.
Amen to this....he deserves the best and this is what music really is supposed to be about. Pure heart and passion
3:36 where he looks over his shoulder for his dad, hits me hard. Definitely made his dad proud.
💯💙
I just broke down when I saw him look over his shoulder’s 😭
god that makes this even more powerful. its just beautiful
It was so powerful.
Yeah !!!that hit me so bad too❤❤❤
I love Lionel Ritchie’s tenderness and compassion.
Yes he is a kind dude
@@easygrin1127 not compasion but emphathy he lost a father aswell .
He was wise in this video
Just an added note about Lionel Richie. I liked his music in the 80's but did not know anything about his personality. Watching the way he spoke to the performer before the presentation and the way he reacted to the performance, he showed me his deep connection to humanity and the world of emotions. Richie is the real deal and as such has been elevated in my book of performers with a soul.
This holds some spot in his heart man…
